At the 2024 trade deadline, the Orioles traded upper minors hitters Kyle Stowers and Connor Norby to the Marlins for reclamation starter Trevor Rogers. Many perceived it as an overpay, and the deal immediately went south. Rogers, who was carrying a 4.53 ERA for Miami, allowed 16 runs in 19 innings over his first four starts with the Orioles. Baltimore optioned him to Triple-A within three weeks and he was a non-factor for a postseason bound club.
This season didn't start out any better. Rogers began the year on the injured list with a right knee subluxation. Baltimore optioned him back to Triple-A when he was healthy. Outside of one strong spot start on May 24, the 6'5" lefty wasn't on the radar into the middle of June. Baltimore's big league rotation -- which was without Grayson Rodriguez, Kyle Bradish and Zach Eflin -- pitched so poorly that their season was more or less finished by the time they recalled Rogers on June 18.
Stowers added insult to injury by carrying Miami's lineup with a pair of power barrages in April and July. He's streaky but now looks like the Marlins' best position player. Even if Norby doesn't work out, Miami is thrilled with their end of the deal. As recently as the middle of June, it looked like a complete bust for Baltimore. It wasn't a lock they'd even tender Rogers a contract for his final season of arbitration.
Two months later, Rogers is the favorite to be on the Camden Yards mound for Opening Day 2026. He had a rocky first start after being recalled, giving up three runs without escaping the third inning against Tampa Bay. He has taken the ball 12 times since then and been the best pitcher in baseball.

There have been a lot of hitters that end up taking awkward swings against Rogers.
Obviously, Rogers is a Warlock.
He has generally outproformed his metrics- and the track record is now enough to say that he is likely one of the guys who do that without an explanation yet.
Instead of baiting us, please start the header with “Front Office Exclusive”. I tried the subscription a couple of years back yet I still had ads for some reason (it set up a second account under my primary email address that I never use to post). I also found the exclusive content was not what I would typically read as mainly a Sox fan. Thus, on renewal I canceled it.
I like to think of paying for a subscription as more of a tip to the guys for all their efforts streamlining all this baseball news for us in one nice package.
I understand but subscriptions add up even $3 a month. By getting the ads, am I not already supporting MLBTR?
Dang as if our year isn’t going poorly enough, our only positive article till next spring is premium locked :'(
Seriously. Paywall is getting annoying
The Os have enough reason to think that the rotation next year with Bradish and Rogers at the top, and the hope that Grayson is healthy and is a mid rotation piece. Povich/kreamer/et al rounding out a roation.
At one point i would have said they needed a run at Frambler since they needed a top of the rotation arm- but with 3 guys with that ability, they may be fine going after a mid rotation guy instead.
No, they still need to target another front of the rotation arm. Injuries happen and they should have learned by now that you can never have enough pitching, especially starting pitchers. Greyson hasn’t shown the ability to stay healthy so anything he contributes should be viewed as a bonus until he stays healthy. They need to target a Cease, Framber, King type and do their best to extend Rogers as well. A top 3 of Cease/TOR acquisition, Bradish and Rogers is what they need. They need to be very aggressive starting now. They can be extremely good and win a ring if they are aggressive at building the roster from this point forward because they only have so many shots at it with Gunnar and Holiday before they need to get moved because they aren’t interested in extensions and the team will never afford them on the open market. The time is now, they can’t have a “this is good enough” type mentality. They need to have the “this move(s) will put us over the top” and aggressively pursue the right targets.
A TOR guy is on the shopping list. I’m more concerned about what the bullpen looks like.
We have maybe 3 ML relievers for next year. We need to add about 5 more
Since Grayson pitched zero innings this year, he won’t be pitching 200 innings in 2026.
Grayson as the Closer in ’26. Maybe ’27 you let him back into the rotation, but, with his injury history at this point, maybe less is more for Grayson.
I’m sure Mike Elias knows not to count on Rogers or Rodriguez for a full 200 IP, given their lengthy injury histories.
Grayson is not the answer to any question other than naming over hyped farm hands. When he’s healthy, he’s great. I have more salad eating days than he has off the IL. He should consider multivitamins or something different than what he’s been doing these past couple years.
TOR sign with big markets nearly ALWAYS, with a small market NEVER. Gravity makes things fall down. You can’t mess around with the laws of physics.
In ‘23 he threw a combined 162 innings. I’m not ready to give up on that.
Alcantara, Rogers, Sixto Sanchez, Luzardo, Cabrera, Garrett, Perez. Not to mention Pablo for Arraez and then recouping Weathers. The Marlins have had some serious talent in the rotation. They should have been 2014-15 Mets good.
Not sure why I’m paying for something I could read on the Orioles’ SB Nation site for free.
Because this site is awesome and you want to support it?
I don’t know, this piece looks like a way to make a player look good before all the MLB personnel who read this site. So they’re probably getting money from Rogers’ agent.
Like how you don’t?
