December 17th: The A’s have officially announced their signing of Leiter.
December 11th: The Athletics have reportedly reached an agreement with right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. on a one-year, $2.85MM contract. The signing is still pending a physical. Leiter is a client of VC Sports Group.
Leiter, 35 in March, made his big league debut back in 2017 but didn’t fully establish himself at the big league level until joining the Cubs in 2022. He served as a swing man and long reliever for Chicago that year, with a 3.99 in 67 2/3 innings of work in that role, but moved to a short relief role full-time in 2023. In 100 2/3 innings of work for the Cubs over the next two seasons, Leiter pitched to a 3.75 ERA with a 3.12 FIP while striking out 30.9% of his opponents and walking 8.8%.
Those exciting peripherals were enough to convince the Yankees to swing a trade for the right-hander at the 2024 trade deadline, but he struggled in New York even as his peripheral numbers remained strong. In 70 innings of work for the Yankees over parts of two seasons with the club, Leiter posted a 4.89 ERA despite a 4.07 FIP. In 2025, Leiter struck out 24.7% against a 7.8% walk rate while generating grounders on 45.5% of his batted balls allowed. Unfortunately for the righty, the results weren’t there enough for the Yankees to tender him a contract last month, and he wound up reaching free agency a year earlier than anticipated.
Headed into 2026, the A’s can expect Leiter to be a solid middle relief arm at least. His 4.15 ERA over the past four seasons is exactly league average (100) by ERA+, and the right-hander’s impressive splitter actually makes him particularly effective against left-handed batters. In 104 2/3 innings of work against lefties the last three years, Leiter has posted a 2.49 ERA and 2.57 FIP with a 32.1% strikeout rate. With league average results overall and elite numbers against lefties, Leiter has a much higher floor than a typical non-tendered middle relief arm, which is surely why he was able to command a solid guarantee even coming off a tough year in New York.
Leiter hasn’t managed to play up to his peripherals throughout his career, but if he can do so he could wind up a valuable setup man for the A’s this year. The righty’s 3.13 SIERA over the past three seasons ranks 13th among relievers with at least 150 innings of work since the start of the 2023 season, and that puts him on a similar level to well-regarded late-inning arms like Luke Weaver. Leiter’s .359 BABIP and 66.5% strand rate over the past two years indicate extremely poor fortune when it comes to batted balls and sequencing; if those numbers experience enough positive regression to get within spitting distance of league average, Leiter’s a good bet to be impactful at the back of the A’s bullpen next year.
It’s been a quiet offseason for the A’s so far, though there’s certain reasons for optimism regarding the club’s future. Nick Kurtz emerged as a potential superstar this year, and he’s backed by a core of exciting positional talent like Brent Rooker, Shea Langeliers, Jacob Wilson, and Lawrence Butler. The club’s pitching staff needs plenty of work if the team is going to contend in 2026, but adding Leiter to a bullpen that already houses respectable arms like Hogan Harris and Michael Kelly should be a small step towards accomplishing that goal. Jeffrey Springs and Luis Severino remain in the fold as solid back-of-the-rotation veterans, though it remains to be seen how much A’s ownership is willing to spend in order to augment that group. Whether the A’s are facing significant budget constraints or not, however, bringing Leiter into the fold as a reliever with possible late-inning upside on a relative bargain can only be a good thing for the club.
Robbie Hyde of Foul Territory first reported the agreement. Janie McCauley of The Associated Press reported the $2.85MM guarantee, after ESPN’s Jesse Rogers first noted it would close to $3MM.

I liked Leiter on the Yanks, but good luck!
I didn’t.
Good riddance 🙂
I didn’t since us fans didn’t get to experience that elusive “elite” splitter much.
I mean yeah was he the best? No, but I just liked that he was here like his dad. Same with Belli. I’m nostalgic that way.
Yeah, and nostalgia ain’t what it used to be
Big Dog Punisher
He showed some moxie during the 2024 World Series for the Yankees, but understandable, he was so so afterwards.
Nice they signed Al Leiter’s kid
Al’s nephew
@sweet. They signed Mark’s son. Who is Al’s brother, and he’s a cousin to jack.
I dont know is the sister
Mark is the nephew
Jack is Al’s son
Mark these words: you dont know Jack.
I heard he was nimble and quick.
Hey, we (Rangers) have Al’s kid!
Yes
Sounds like Mark’s wife has some explaining to do.
A reliever with an ERA consistently hovering just under 5.00… I’m not sure I see the value here.
I think you have to look moreso at his Savant Page. That is where you find the real value in his pitch mix and effectiveness. He’s a savvy vet signing for the A’s Pen. Can be a breakout candidate from a 2026 performance standpoint.
Over the past four years his average era has been around four and a quarter
Even as a RHP he has good outcomes vs. LH hitters. So he’s a good choice to work through a lineup where it’s RLRL without burning a LHP. On a playoff team, he should be a 7th inning guy. On the A’s he might be an 8th inning guy instead.
I watched him for the last year and a half. I don’t see the value either.
He was pretty good with the Cubs for a bit there. Then he turned into a pumpkin in the Bronx. I hope he finds his rhythm again.
1.700 WHIP. Yikes.
3 million way over Cubs budget
I knew it! I made a list of 8 reliever that would be good for the A’s and Leiter Jr. was one of them, here he is, a bullpen arm on the A’s.
The Mets love former Yankees. I was hoping he’d replace Diaz. Haha
He had his moments, i wish him well out West.
Hope he does well on the Nottheyankees. He went to NJIT so he’s a bright guy. May make a good coach someday with his baseball family heritage.
Could be under the radar
It makes sense for the A’s with their ballpark. In Sacramento strikeouts and ground balls are what you need to consistently get outs and that’s how he gets most of his outs. Low cost too meaning low risk so I don’t think there’s anything to complain about here from an A’s fan perspective
He gave up 11 homers in 70 innings as a Yankee and Sacramento is even more of a bandbox than Yankee Stadium.
His high ground ball rate and strikeout rate is probably what they are focused on and they are thinking that 70 inning sample size had a lot of bad luck and that his homerun rate will be more in line with his career rates than those 70 innings. We’ll see if they are right about that
Also his homerun rate last year was 0.9 per 9, which is below league average. It was really only the 20 innings in 2024 where he gave up some homeruns, and that sample size is definitely too small to do anything tangible with
BF – His splitter must not have split
He was great for the Cubs. Now Hayden Wesnesski is in the Astros. He’s who the Cubs acquired for MLJ from the Yankees. So potentially the A’s and Astros could win a trade they weren’t even part of. It’ll depend on Mark’s season. Hayden isn’t gonna pitch until maybe August. Not 100% sure when he went down with an injury that required TJS. His ceiling is high once he returns..
Cubs got Wesneski for Scott Effross. The Leiter return was Neely and Cowles. Cowles was DFA’d and claimed by the White Sox. Neely is a reliever and still in the Cubs system.
You’re right. Dang it. It was Effross because he needed TJS shortly after his stint with the Yankees started. I like Neely. I call him Captain Hook Neely before of his Captain Hook mustache. Or at least he had one close to it.
Incorrect Wesneski was for Effross. Neely and Cowles came over for Leiter.
If he’s 35 there better be a Mark Leiter III waiting in the wings.
So far only his cousin Jack Leiter so far. His Wikipedia page doesn’t say it he has kids or not or that he’s even married.
What the hey! The Yankees arr just going to let everyone walk this year.
Believe me, I don’t care if you think the Yankees will let any star walk. But this guy can run, sprint, jump in a race car or even fly out if New York in a 747 good riddance. He is your problem now
Resign Newcomb now
Don? He’s still pitching?
Spending to win and spending to avoid a grievance aren’t the same thing, just a reminder.
Yeah, but who cares. Spending is spending at the end of the day. The Yankees spend money and even then they can’t make it far in the playoffs.
Spending to avoid a grievance covers how cheap and reliant you are on revenue sharing, even worse when temporarily staying near a market you pissed off just to squeeze enough TV market money to flee to a smaller market in a tourist destination.
And making the postseason is still making the postseason at the end of the day. At least the Yankees ownership doesn’t commit to fire sales because our players become too expensive then cry poor for a stadium afterwards.
They should swing a trade with the Reds for Brady Singer and then negotiate an extension.
Their bullpen was actually better after mason miller trade. Harris, sterner, Kelly, Ferguson, leiter isn’t a bad group on paper. Bring back newcomb or get weaver . And I could see one of their injury prone starters like ginn or Perkins turn to relief
Bullpen has second best ERA in the second half. Agreed on re-signing Newcomb and maybe someone with closing experience (E.g. Jansen comes to mind). Right now they have Sevy, Springs, Lopez locked in for rotation. They need one more starting arm through trade or FA, and then let Perkins, Ginn, and Morales battle it out for the last spot. Or trade Sevy for younger pitching could be another path.
Praying his contract included a no trade to the Yankees.
I don’t think he had a no-trade clause to any team
It’s a joke probably from a Yankee fan.
Solid, tradeable piece. Look at Fisher actually opening up the wallet
Can’t give him credit since it’s to avoid grievance and only reason they are in Sacramento is to stay in region to keep collecting cable TV deal revenue. I expect they’ll be dumpster diving for free agents due to cost and hard to convince players to play in an milb ballpark for another 2 years at least
Thanks for giving me a good laugh, Rsox.
Whenever I see that he is in his 30’s, I’m reminded how long ago it was that I had got new baseball cards of Al and Mark Leiter in complete sets or packs of cards. 🙁
I coached against Mark and Al in 83 when they played for Central in the Jersey Shore. Both were great pitchers. I wish Mark Jr. the best of luck and his splitter is nasty.
I grew up a Yaz fan Now his grandson is at BB retirement age.
One more bold step in the A’s quest to achieve mediocrity.
when he came in, he was Leiter fuel
Good look with the A’s. Leiter was a good reliever for NY wasn’t a superstar / all star but he is good enough to be a middle reliever on any MLB team. Lets face it not every guy makes 10 plus million a year. He served a purpose and the yankees moved on
Shrewd Move for the A’s
Glad he’s gone
I like it at this price. His BABIP and LOB% should rebound.
Who’s going to play for the Yankees? I can’t think of anyone that they signed yet.
Deadline trade candidate.
