Reds Sign Eugenio Suarez

By Mark Polishuk | February 1, 2026 at 4:22pm CDT

Eugenio Suarez is returning to Cincinnati, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the slugger has signed a one-year, $15MM deal with the Reds that includes a mutual option for the 2027 season.  Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the option is worth $16MM, though mutual options are rarely triggered by both sides.  The deal will become official once the Reds clear a spot on their 40-man roster, and presumably when Suarez passes a physical.  Suarez is represented by Octagon.

Reports emerged last week that the Reds had interest in a reunion with the third baseman, who hit .253/.335/.476 with 189 homers over 3730 plate appearances during the 2015-21 seasons.  The continued uncertainty over the Reds’ broadcast deal with Main Street Sports was said to be a holdup for the team in how much money they had available to pursue Suarez or other targets like Austin Hays (who signed with the White Sox yesterday).

With an agreement now in place with Suarez, it could be that the Reds have gotten some clarity about how they’ll proceed with MSS or perhaps a new broadcasting agreement with Major League Baseball itself.  Alternatively, Suarez’s acceptance of just a one-year deal and arguably a discount price may be another reason why the two sides were able to line up on a contract.

MLB Trade Rumors ranked Suarez 20th on our list of the winter’s top 50 free agents, and projected him for a three-year, $63MM deal.  The one-year, $15MM pact falls well short of that prediction in both years and average annual value, as it could be teams were wary of making a larger commitment to a strikeout-prone player who turns 35 in July.  Suarez’s third base glovework also dropped in 2025, as he posted -6 Defensive Runs Saved and -3 Outs Above Average.

With the bat, however, Suarez hit 49 home runs in 2025, matching his career high set with the Reds in 2019.  Suarez’s overall slash line of .228/.298/.526 reflects his power-heavy output, as he delivered a below-average walk rate for the second consecutive season.  Though Suarez’s 29.8% strikeout rate put him in the fifth percentile of all batters, he maxed out when he did make contact, with strong hard-contact and barrel rates.

It has been a strange two-season run for Suarez, who sandwiched a superstar-level campaign in between two mediocre half-seasons.  Suarez had only a .591 OPS over his first 315 PA of the 2024 season with the Diamondbacks, before he caught fire and hit .276/.336/.593 with 60 homers over 766 PA from July 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025.  Unfortunately, Suarez then drastically cooled off after he was dealt to the Mariners at the trade deadline, but he somewhat rebounded to get some key hits during Seattle’s postseason run to Game 7 of the ALCS.

This rather extreme streakiness could be another reason Suarez’s market never really took off this winter, as teams were justifiably not sure exactly which version of Suarez they’d get in his 13th big league season.  The Mariners had some interest in a reunion, and other teams like the Cubs, Red Sox, and Pirates were also linked to the slugger.

Pittsburgh was the other finalist for Suarez’s services, according to MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo.  As per MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf and Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates were willing to offer a $15MM average annual salary to Suarez and also offered him a second guaranteed year.  In taking just a one-year contract, Suarez seems to be hoping to fully re-establish his market by having a big season in 2026 and then re-entering free agency next winter.  It was also very likely to Cincinnati’s benefit that Suarez is already very familiar with the organization from his previous seven-year run in the Queen City.

While the Pirates are on the way up, Suarez may have been more interested in joining a Reds team that actually did make the playoffs in 2025.  Cincinnati reached the postseason on the strength of its rotation, as the lineup was average at best in most offensive categories, and 21st of 30 teams in home runs.  Elly De La Cruz and Spencer Steer combined for 43 homers as the Reds’ top two home-run hitters in 2025, so Suarez alone tops that total.

Suarez steps right into an everyday role in the Reds’ lineup, though it will be interesting to see where exactly Suarez is deployed.  Ke’Bryan Hayes is arguably the best defensive third baseman in the game, so Suarez is more likely to see a lot of action as a DH and possibly at first base.  Suarez’s MLB history as a first baseman consists of just three late-game appearances, all of which came last year.  The Reds will surely give Suarez plenty of time at the position this spring to see how Suarez fares at the cold corner, and Steer and Sal Stewart will also receive at-bats in the first base/DH mix.  Stewart can also play some second base and Steer could play left field, with Steer’s right-handed bat complementing the left-handed hitting JJ Bleday on the grass.

Bleday and Dane Myers were the only notable offensive adds the Reds made prior to today, with the two outfielders more or less replacing Hays and Gavin Lux (who was dealt to the Rays as part of the three-team deal with the Angels that brought reliever Brock Burke to Cincinnati).  Suarez now represents a major boost to the Reds’ lineup, and a source of stability on a team that is still waiting to see what it has in players like Steer, Stewart, Matt McLain, or Noelvi Marte.  Even De La Cruz was more good than great in 2025, but EDLC figures to benefit with Suarez providing protection behind him in the lineup.

RosterResource estimates a $126.1MM payroll for the Reds at the moment, which is a minor increase over their $118.7MM figure from the 2025 season.  President of baseball operations Nick Krall said in early November that the Reds would be spending at “around the same” levels as 2025, so it could be that the team is essentially done with significant offseason moves unless they can unload some salary.

This could again change depending on what happens with the Reds’ broadcast deal, or ownership might potentially green-light some more spending either now or during the season (perhaps once some ticket revenue starts rolling in).  The Reds seem to be well-positioned to make another run at a postseason berth in 2026, even though within the NL Central alone, the Pirates will be better and the Brewers and Cubs each figure to keep battling for the division crown.

Maybe that could be in the next CBA, 48 player NFL sized game day rosters, offensive players that just hit, defensive players that just take the field, some two-way players and an expanded pitching staff too. Ke’Bryan Hayes would never have to come to the plate again.

Cincy is a hitter’s paradise for home runs, but Suarez has only hit over 48 2 times. (49) Maybe this could be his first 50 bomb season.

The trade to Seattle likely resulted in him missing 50+ HRs.

I’ll take the under on 48. He’s getting older, and hitting 50 HRs is not easy.

Payne: The Red Sox don’t need another LH bat in their lineup. It doesn’t make sense to trade a SP and/or prospects to get him when they have players in their organization who can be just as good or better. You have been reading too many articles by “experts” who just repeat each other’s rumors.

          Kittens why?

He’s not very good in the field and he’s not very good with the bat.

The shiny object is the home runs and that doesn’t fly. Even those tailed off the second half from his pace starting the year.

There’s nothing to like about this player even at $15 million.

Gary- He was the power right handed hitter they needed. Yes he is not great in the field and strikes out far too much, but 40-50 homers would have an impact.

I know that is a priority, but before they said that was what they were looking for they said they wanted to bring in a right handed hitter with power. $15 million for someone with the potential to hit 50 homers is cheap.

I don’t think the Red Sox want another poor fielding third baseman. If the Red Sox had an open spot at DH, Suarez could make sense, but they don’t have an open DH spot now. Also, Suarez will be 35 soon. His stats could fall off a cliff anytime.

All- I think a short term contract like what he signed with the Reds would have given them the hitter they need for this season. Not ideal, but I think Fenway would have allowed him to produce some significant offense. He should not be worse than the defense Devers provided and would allow Mayer to take second and hopefully make up for the lack of defense from Suarez assuming Story can cut down on the errors with a consistent double play partner.

Great addition for the Reds! This is one of those no brainer contracts and kind of hard to fathom a guy that almost hit 50 hr last year signed for 1/15m in this day and age.

I’d probably take the Reds collection of high upside & cost controlled starting pitchers over any other team and this signing should do wonders making full use of that.

Super happy for the Reds and their fans!!

For real. I understand the age and the strikeouts but he’s put up 13+ WAR over the last four seasons (3.3 average per year) with 132 HR and a 118 OPS+. He’s also almost never injured. No one offered more than 1/$15 million? Kind of crazy. The Pirates couldn’t beat that? He’d instantly be one of their best hitters.

Maybe they have updated article because it says Pirates offered two years at $15 million per year, or a total of $30 million.

Guess the author did not anticipate Geno to Reds because there is no discussion as to whether he will DH, play 1B, or what with Hayes at 3B, plus Stewart and Steer and Stephenson.

Suarez was my top off season choice for the Reds and may well be the key to a successful 2026 season. My only fear is at his advanced age, he could suddenly turn into a toad. Hopefully a lot of being the DH will help avoid that..

Now that the Reds have their full time DH, I can see Spencer Steer being moved to LF with Sal Stewart taking over at 1B. Hopefully Suarez still has something left in the tank this year and this could be the move they needed to contend in the NL Central.

Cases like this is why MLB should have a signing deadline. Eugenio likely gets more if he signed earlier, but lost leverage as ST nears and suitors satisfy openings elsewhere.

Great deal for the Reds though. Are there any examples of both team and player picking up the mutual option?

Hora- How did you get big market bias from a player friendly proposal of a signing deadline?

I was advocating for Eugenio’s seemingly light contract- I could careless which of the 30 teams give it to him.

And the Dodgers comment, lol, griping to gripe?

Myname – I thought you would get my point. Lobbying for changes to improve players pay makes it even more difficult for small market teams to afford these players. It only further helps the big spenders by restricting players to a smaller pool of potential clubs.

As others have said, the mutual option is almost never picked up and the main purpose seems to be shifting money around with buyouts.

I don’t see any buyout mention but I’m assuming there is one. Say it’s $3M. This allows them to essentially sign Suarez for 1yr/$18M while only having $15M on the books next year.

And re: a signing deadline: I don’t think it would help players at all and I think it’s a total gimmick that wouldn’t help the game in any meaningful way.

I also don’t understand the people who think it would suddenly generate all sorts of interest in the MLB offseason and make it less “boring.”

The unavoidable problem MLB has with generating interest in its offseason is that it coincides with the regular season and playoffs of America’s new civil religion: the NFL.

ESPN is not going to suddenly devote more time to MLB at the expense of the golden goose if there’s a condensed FA period. That’s a fantasy.

Besides, you get the condensed FA period and then what? Basically a few months of dead air with the occasional trade? That’s supposed to be more exciting?

I don’t understand the logic. So why should players like Suarez benefit because they held out and eventually sign a lesser deal? Every year there are players without a chair when the music stops playing. Even Boras clients.

Great pickup by the Reds. Cubs and Brewers are good, but it seems like the Reds won’t let them be! Wonderful! That means the top FA bats are off the board. Just waiting for Gallen and Valdez to sign.

One year, 15 million is dirt cheap for Suarez. Surprised couldn’t get a multiple year deal.

Suarez will strike out a ton and hit some homers, which are the two things that he can do. The only question is which tendency will prevail. Too many strikeouts mean the Seattle version of Suarez, who was worthless. Enough homers mean the Arizona version of Suarez, who was useful.

At least the Reds will keep him at DH and it’s only a one-year deal. So the possible downside is limited. And Cincinnati badly needs somebody who can get the ball over the fence now and then.

Good move for the Reds. I wouldn’t be surprised if he hit 50 homers this season, a large number of those coming against my poor Cubs, whose management never seems able to make the obvious right move.

I think the Reds will win the NL Central, followed by the Pirates, Brewers, Cubs, and Cardinals.

Agree. Too many strikeouts but at that salary why not sign him to DH and play 3B occasionally? There is literally no one left on offence for the Tigers to sign to beef up the offence. McGonigle will be a good add but why not grab another proven bat. I’m disappointed that they have done nothing on offence.

He had 49 (with 118 rbi) in 2025. still elite power & run production.

Schwarber is a .220 hitter who averages over 200 strikes outs / yr and he’s a DH and he got $150mil

Schwarber is a year younger, takes many more walks and has averaged 48 HR per 162 over the past four seasons compared to Suarez’s 34 per 162.

If he was putting up 40+ year in and year out it would be a different story.

Nevertheless, the salary does seem underwhelming. I would have guessed $20.
