February 3rd: The Reds made the Suarez deal official today. Catcher Ben Rortvedt was designated for assignment as the corresponding move.
February 1st: Eugenio Suarez is returning to Cincinnati, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the slugger has signed a one-year, $15MM deal with the Reds that includes a mutual option for the 2027 season. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the option is worth $16MM, though mutual options are rarely triggered by both sides. The deal will become official once the Reds clear a spot on their 40-man roster, and presumably when Suarez passes a physical. Suarez is represented by Octagon.
Reports emerged last week that the Reds had interest in a reunion with the third baseman, who hit .253/.335/.476 with 189 homers over 3730 plate appearances during the 2015-21 seasons. The continued uncertainty over the Reds’ broadcast deal with Main Street Sports was said to be a holdup for the team in how much money they had available to pursue Suarez or other targets like Austin Hays (who signed with the White Sox yesterday).
With an agreement now in place with Suarez, it could be that the Reds have gotten some clarity about how they’ll proceed with MSS or perhaps a new broadcasting agreement with Major League Baseball itself. Alternatively, Suarez’s acceptance of just a one-year deal and arguably a discount price may be another reason why the two sides were able to line up on a contract.

With the bat, however, Suarez hit 49 home runs in 2025, matching his career high set with the Reds in 2019. Suarez’s overall slash line of .228/.298/.526 reflects his power-heavy output, as he delivered a below-average walk rate for the second consecutive season. Though Suarez’s 29.8% strikeout rate put him in the fifth percentile of all batters, he maxed out when he did make contact, with strong hard-contact and barrel rates.
It has been a strange two-season run for Suarez, who sandwiched a superstar-level campaign in between two mediocre half-seasons. Suarez had only a .591 OPS over his first 315 PA of the 2024 season with the Diamondbacks, before he caught fire and hit .276/.336/.593 with 60 homers over 766 PA from July 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025. Unfortunately, Suarez then drastically cooled off after he was dealt to the Mariners at the trade deadline, but he somewhat rebounded to get some key hits during Seattle’s postseason run to Game 7 of the ALCS.
This rather extreme streakiness could be another reason Suarez’s market never really took off this winter, as teams were justifiably not sure exactly which version of Suarez they’d get in his 13th big league season. The Mariners had some interest in a reunion, and other teams like the Cubs, Red Sox, and Pirates were also linked to the slugger.
Pittsburgh was the other finalist for Suarez’s services, according to MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo. As per MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf and Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates were willing to offer a $15MM average annual salary to Suarez and also offered him a second guaranteed year. In taking just a one-year contract, Suarez seems to be hoping to fully re-establish his market by having a big season in 2026 and then re-entering free agency next winter. It was also very likely to Cincinnati’s benefit that Suarez is already very familiar with the organization from his previous seven-year run in the Queen City.
While the Pirates are on the way up, Suarez may have been more interested in joining a Reds team that actually did make the playoffs in 2025. Cincinnati reached the postseason on the strength of its rotation, as the lineup was average at best in most offensive categories, and 21st of 30 teams in home runs. Elly De La Cruz and Spencer Steer combined for 43 homers as the Reds’ top two home-run hitters in 2025, so Suarez alone tops that total.
Suarez steps right into an everyday role in the Reds’ lineup, though it will be interesting to see where exactly Suarez is deployed. Ke’Bryan Hayes is arguably the best defensive third baseman in the game, so Suarez is more likely to see a lot of action as a DH and possibly at first base. Suarez’s MLB history as a first baseman consists of just three late-game appearances, all of which came last year. The Reds will surely give Suarez plenty of time at the position this spring to see how Suarez fares at the cold corner, and Steer and Sal Stewart will also receive at-bats in the first base/DH mix. Stewart can also play some second base and Steer could play left field, with Steer’s right-handed bat complementing the left-handed hitting JJ Bleday on the grass.
Bleday and Dane Myers were the only notable offensive adds the Reds made prior to today, with the two outfielders more or less replacing Hays and Gavin Lux (who was dealt to the Rays as part of the three-team deal with the Angels that brought reliever Brock Burke to Cincinnati). Suarez now represents a major boost to the Reds’ lineup, and a source of stability on a team that is still waiting to see what it has in players like Steer, Stewart, Matt McLain, or Noelvi Marte. Even De La Cruz was more good than great in 2025, but EDLC figures to benefit with Suarez providing protection behind him in the lineup.
RosterResource estimates a $126.1MM payroll for the Reds at the moment, which is a minor increase over their $118.7MM figure from the 2025 season. President of baseball operations Nick Krall said in early November that the Reds would be spending at “around the same” levels as 2025, so it could be that the team is essentially done with significant offseason moves unless they can unload some salary.
This could again change depending on what happens with the Reds’ broadcast deal, or ownership might potentially green-light some more spending either now or during the season (perhaps once some ticket revenue starts rolling in). The Reds seem to be well-positioned to make another run at a postseason berth in 2026, even though within the NL Central alone, the Pirates will be better and the Brewers and Cubs each figure to keep battling for the division crown.

Eu coming back to Cincy to demolish more baseballs.
Great move for Cincy right here!
This hurts. I’ve been wanting Boston to ink him and thought after the White Sox transaction, it was going to happen.
If only Hayes could play defense at 3B and Geno could hit for him.
Maybe that could be in the next CBA, 48 player NFL sized game day rosters, offensive players that just hit, defensive players that just take the field, some two-way players and an expanded pitching staff too. Ke’Bryan Hayes would never have to come to the plate again.
I would love to see the dh be for any player.
One other thing. Why not have offensive and defensive lineups. There are so many players that never get to see the field just because they only have one tool.
And players who are just baserunners (like special teams).
That would be awesome in a way. Every baserunning having the chance to steal.
And wear shoulder pads?
SL
This would be awesome
I want to see the best players. The current format restricts that. There are much better hitters than Hayes and much better defenders that Suarez. That’s who I want to see
Why do I have to watch Hates hit just because he can pick it on defense?
You guys all liked the XFL, didn’t you
The XFL didn’t have the best football players in the world
Don’t the Dodgers already do that?
“The current format restricts that.”?
“The current format” has been around over 100 years. I still am getting over the hives I got from all the changes to this great game since COVID-19.
It’s not that I think the game has to change. It needs to change. Somewhere in the last 25-30 years the generation exchange did not happen. Baseball isn’t boring, but it has to be passionate. That starts young.
FM
” I still am getting over the hives I got from all the changes to this great game since COVID-19.”
🤷♂️
I think technically the DH can be for everyone under the current rules. Down side would the the pitcher spot will then have to hit
Don’t tell Ohtani that.
But then he gets removed as DH ih he stops pitching
They changed the rules a few years ago so he could stay in the game.
vd
“Why not? Because it’s ridiculous”
No. Not at all
Ridiculous is not being able to tell the difference between you not liking something and that thing actually being bad
NZ
If he’s the DH, yes. But if he’s in as a pitcher, and not the DH, he can’t move to DH when he’s taken out as a pitcher.
Which is a rule I disagree with, but it’s the rule
Maybe because actual baseball is a two way sport. Only football has dedicated offensive and defensive players. The sport is great as it is. We need to stop messing with it. While most including me like the pitch clock, the ghost runner and pizza box bases have negatively changed the game.
Stupid change. While it’s amazing he can do both, they should be done under the same rules. With 13 pitchers on most staffs, there is no reason why a positional player needs to pitch in a blowout. If you pitched more than once in a game, you should be counted as a pitcher for the season and the new team limit on pitchers should be 11 or 12. All will adjust and gs big extra bench players is what increases strategy in games.
Ahh okay. That sucks. I’ve seen that a lot being an Orioles fan. Rutschman being the DH and the other catcher getting ph/pr. Makes sense as you shouldn’t be able to substitute a player in the field into the DH slot, and then put the dh in the field. I would say it would be fair that each pitcher should have a seperate player designated to hit for them. Just not enough bench players.
The sport desperately needs change. It’s not the same sport it was. During the 60s, 70s, 80s starters pitched 6.3 innings and struck out 4 batters. Now they pitch 5 and strike out 5. What changed? Tommy John. Pitchers throw harder with more torque because they can come back if they throw out their arm. This is not going to change. Batters have so much advance tools now. It’s a lot more than index cards. By the time a pitcher has faced 18 batters. A computer has tracker ever one of his pitches. The average batter has seen 8.5 pitches.
Like the NFL of today which chides kickoffs and you have announce a trick play (onsides kick)? Soon to be just flag football.
They get to see minor league fields.
I don’t believe the rules state that you have to DH for your pitcher. The trick is having a pitcher that hits better than Hayes, and knowing that your relievers might have to hit that day too.
You absolutely can only DH for the pitcher in MLB.
@dewey The pitch clock and limiting pickoff throws are what have increased steals, for better or worse. I don’t think the bases being larger has much to do with it. I’d be curious to know if any numbers are kept on how they’ve affected injuries around the bases, since that was the intention.
Because any game, 100 years later, should have some resemblance, to what it was originally?
Because that is not baseball. Nosferatu. Part of the beauty of the game is that every player needs to succeed on both offense and defense. (Except the DH, which is the philosophical argument against the DH, btw)
And even better, Miles Mastrobuoni would never have to come to the plate again.
Limiting pickoff throws was the best and most overdue of all the rules changes.
The DH is for any player, no one is excluded.
I remember the pearl-clutching when there was a rash of injuries on the base paths one year and ESPN ran several articles about the potential of break-away bases like they use in Little League.
The high school DH rule!
Come on, Sheng-En Lin! Get up here, and make that happen!
Not a Reds fan but baseball is more fun when they are in the mix. Such a classic team. Love this for them
thank you, Enrico. I can tell we would be good friends.
Heyyy… it’s Enrico Pallazzo!
Over/under 48 bombs?
Cincy is a hitter’s paradise for home runs, but Suarez has only hit over 48 2 times. (49) Maybe this could be his first 50 bomb season.
The trade to Seattle likely resulted in him missing 50+ HRs.
I’ll take the under on 48. He’s getting older, and hitting 50 HRs is not easy.
Over
Under by at least 15
Millar – I’d take 30 bombs (hoping for more though!).
Under !!!
Under, thinking 32-35.
@dbdmack agreed, I was going to say 36 I think he returns to the mean
Under
Under 30
Under, but not by much. Something like 43-47
More than if someone else was playing third base, that’s a certainly.
Or DH possibly.
Well as he hit 49 and only got 1/15. I am thinking two ways. He sells out more for bombs or tries to shows he is more than 1 tool. I’m thinking the latter as SOs pile up and he has the same profile. Then after 2 months he switches gears and swings for the fences.
I think Eugenio will play long enough – three seasons – to get 75 more home runs in his career to reach 400 homers. While Geno is clearly not a hall of famer, 400 homers is still a very impressive milestone. For example, not sure that Goldie or Cutch will make it to 400 home runs and both Goldie and Cutch had superior careers to Geno.
I am just wondering if he hangs around long enough to get to 500 homeruns. Then what? Goldie is a maybe HOFer while Curch is only a HOVGer.
Under. Very little doubt
Not wishing him bad. I’m just thinking he going to be trying to hard. It’s going to be an ugly 35-40. The homerun totals were fine in Seattle. 41/162 it was the 237/162 strikeouts and the 2.9 dip in EV.
Over/under 215 whiffs?
libl
“Over/under 215 whiffs?”
Save it for fanduels. It doesn’t really matter here.
It matters how much power you hit for and how often you get it. How you get out doesn’t really matter
@Jazz Id say the bigger issue is for all intensive purposes hes hit 49 HRs once. We all know that 2019 #s are inflated. Even if they were not I dont see what value that going 6 seasons back on a 35 yr old provides.
That said I do think Suarez will provide power. Aside from that he does not offer much else. For the right team he is a definite plus tho especially in this limited free agent market.
@JuanUribe & @Tigers32
So much to unpack. First off, Geno actually has hit 49 homers more than once. He also hit 49 in 2019.
Strikeouts don’t matter? “Save it for fanduels?” I suppose if you are saving it for your fantasy team and only care about power then you would be correct. There are MANY situations in baseball where a strikeout is far more than “just an out” – it’s the exact opposite of “how you get out doesn’t really matter.”
And the correct phrase is “for all intents and purposes.”
BB
“Strikeouts don’t matter?”
Is that what I said?
A player who gets out 70% of the time – it doesn’t really matter how many of those times are by strike out.
“There are MANY situations in baseball where a strikeout is far more than “just an out””
I mean sure, double plays, triple plays…
““Save it for fanduels?” I suppose if you are saving it for your fantasy team and only care about power then you would be correct.”
Let’s look at what I was responding to
“Over/under 215 whiffs?”
No, over/unders don’t really matter outside of sports betting
@Tiger: “for all intensive purposes”? OMG, it’s been a while since I’ve heard or seen in print that classic illiteracy. The expression is “for all intents and purposes.”
What would an intensive purpose BE, anyway? What would that even mean?
@JuanUribe
Fair enough, I agree that you were replying to a specific betting line discussion. I think I grouped it with your phrase “how you get out doesn’t really matter” which is not an accurate phrase in all situations. He will strikeout a ton, which will impact the Reds and kill rallies.
But I can definitely get behind your core point, if he hits the home runs that’s what people will key in on.
BB
If you think a strike out kills a rally, wait until you see what a double play does
And how does a strike out kill a rally any more than any other kind of out
I’ll take the under, but over 30.
Interesting hr totals.
Most hover around 30 except for last year when he hit 49 and the juiced ball year at 49.
He was clearly hoping to get a three year $75 M contract based on this one year but he will be a DH in Cincinnati and lower his value by not playing in the field anymore.
He may have regrets not accepting the Pirates’ two year offer if he has a bad year at 25 home runs.
OTOH he and his family are financially set for life. By signing a 1-year contract he has the flexibility to prioritize where to spend each of the last few years of his career.
He picked a place that is much easier to hit homers in.
Never would have guessed Cincy. I would have thought Boston to replace Bregman
They couldnt do that because they are going to trade for Donovan !
Probably not, they don’t need another lefty
Actually they do lol
@Ben Their entire OF and 4th OF are LH hitters as well as Mayer. They do not need another LH bat, they could add one but it would not be ideal.
I was referring to Seattle. I missed the Segway. My bad. I was like what are y’all talking about lol.
Payne: The Red Sox don’t need another LH bat in their lineup. It doesn’t make sense to trade a SP and/or prospects to get him when they have players in their organization who can be just as good or better. You have been reading too many articles by “experts” who just repeat each other’s rumors.
I don’t like how you’re thinking logically. I choose to live in a baseball world where I get to choose hope over logic lol
Wow, for what Eugenio got I am surprised the Sox did not grab him.
They want a defensive second basemen.
Kittens why?
He’s not very good in the field and he’s not very good with the bat.
The shiny object is the home runs and that doesn’t fly. Even those tailed off the second half from his pace starting the year.
There’s nothing to like about this player even at $15 million.
Gary- He was the power right handed hitter they needed. Yes he is not great in the field and strikes out far too much, but 40-50 homers would have an impact.
Then you don’t have to tell other people to stop thinking how they are thinking.
I know that is a priority, but before they said that was what they were looking for they said they wanted to bring in a right handed hitter with power. $15 million for someone with the potential to hit 50 homers is cheap.
Touche’
Not sure what you mean. I did not say anything that was meant to be a negative comment to another post. I just thought the Sox missed an opportunity for a big bat.
@ Pedro
I agree. I believe you are only sharing your opinion.
I don’t think the Red Sox want another poor fielding third baseman. If the Red Sox had an open spot at DH, Suarez could make sense, but they don’t have an open DH spot now. Also, Suarez will be 35 soon. His stats could fall off a cliff anytime.
That is a ridiculously stupid statement. He’s not a very good hitter? His OPS was higher than Bellinger Rooker, Lindor, Tatis, Soderstrom, Riley, Trout, Naylor, Machado, J-ROD, Yelich. Yes….he’s not very good. SMH
All- I think a short term contract like what he signed with the Reds would have given them the hitter they need for this season. Not ideal, but I think Fenway would have allowed him to produce some significant offense. He should not be worse than the defense Devers provided and would allow Mayer to take second and hopefully make up for the lack of defense from Suarez assuming Story can cut down on the errors with a consistent double play partner.
@gary come on. I’m sorry but that’s kind of a ridiculous take. He put up nearly 4 WAR last season. 15 million is a bargain for that kind of production.
@all
I panicked when I saw the word Red because I thought Sox would follow. Small sample size but in 10 games he has a 1.277 OPS. He would be Hulk putting dents on the Green Monster. It’s a 1 year deal. I di6nt he would regress that fast.
Sorry… I was replying to Payne’s response: “I don’t like how you’re thinking logically. I choose to live in a baseball world where I get to choose hope over logic lol” I thought it was a good retort.
He is not a complete hitter. Then again if he turned 3p of those 3-2 count strikeout we would sing a different tune.
Matty isn’t OPS a home run driven statistic?
We all know he had 49 home runs last year.
How about his strikeouts lack of walks and batting average? Those don’t matter? You’re shiny object is the home runs and I guarantee 49 doesn’t happen again at age 35.
Slot him in for 30 and anything more is a bonus.
GRSW
“Matty isn’t OPS a home run driven statistic?”
I mean, it counts a home run add being better than a single. So, that’s good
There are a ton of other problems with it though
First, it doesn’t pass middle school level math
Second, it does overvalue power
The much better measure is wRC+. By that measure Suarez was 25% better than the average hitter and 39th in the league overall. Tied with Bellinger and Soderstrom (abd Trea Turner).
*https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2025&season1=2025&ind=0&sortcol=17&sortdir=default&pageitems=100&postseason=
Maybe he didn’t want to play there.
I assume the Sox never offered him a contract but it may be that he just felt most comfortable going to the Reds.
Geno was 39th in the league in WRC+, yet he was dead last out of 145 qualified batters in BABIP. Any progression towards the median will benefit the Reds. If I was a betting man I would put money on it that there will be. #139 and #143 both finished second in their respective leagues in MVP voting.
MI
His expected batting average was .211, lower than his actual batting average.
And his xwOBA was much lower than his WOBA
baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/eugenio-suare…
FanGraphs projects him for a 102 wRC+ next year. He didn’t get a massive contract.
“Any progression towards the median”
I think you mean, “regression to the mean”
They’re better off letting the young guys play than trading for Donovan. He’s another member of the MLB Trade Rumors All-Overrated Team.
I don’t see Donovan being a good fit. Ideally they need right handed power and Donovan is likely going to cost more than he is worth in a trade. There are better options.
Donovan is staying in St. Louis. The demand for him from other teams in contention will be through the roof at the trade deadline, and Chaim Bloom’s high asking price will be met without question. IF Donovan stays healthy, that is, and IF he plays up to his talents. It’s a gamble, but for St. louis probably worth it.
Fail, going to Seattle.
I wanted him more than any other bat. Congrats Reds fans.
Wow, I am glad they didn’t follow my advice and give him 2/45
Great addition for the Reds! This is one of those no brainer contracts and kind of hard to fathom a guy that almost hit 50 hr last year signed for 1/15m in this day and age.
I’d probably take the Reds collection of high upside & cost controlled starting pitchers over any other team and this signing should do wonders making full use of that.
Super happy for the Reds and their fans!!
Padre fans are so cool. It must have something to do with living in the best city in the world as far as weather.
IIRC Suarez has never been offered a QO. So that would still be on the table for the Reds at season’s end.
@Armament With 49 HRs he settled for $15M on a 1 year deal, what makes u think a team would want to tag him with an offer of $20M+? He ll b 35 going into 2027 season, Im just not seeing any way a team would give him QO
Agreed it’s not likely. But if, say, his full-season 2026 production looks like what he put up with the D’backs, the Reds might be happy to slightly overpay at the QO rate for another 1-year deal that he’d be unlikely to turn down. After all, the Reds just did the same thing with Nick Martinez for 2025.
Surprised this dude couldn’t score any more than this, money and years. That’s a bargain for 40+ homer guy. Good for the Reds, they haven’t done anything yet.
So many strikeouts though…That’s the only thing that I would have trouble with.
@long suffering
You are not going to get a perfect player for $15MM in FA.
At 15 million you are getting one of the best deals in FA.
This was a steal. I can’t believe the Sox let him get away for that.
All these dudes struck out a lot too.
Reggie Jackson: 2,597
Jim Thome: 2,548
Adam Dunn: 2,379
Sammy Sosa: 2,306
Alex Rodriguez: 2,287
Miguel Cabrera: 2,105
Giancarlo Stanton: 2,059
Andrés Galarraga: 2,003
Paul Goldschmidt: 1,979
Justin Upton: 1,971
E z w comparisons lol
He struck out 9 more times than Shohei
Matty
Eugenio has had a more impressive career than Adam Dunn. He is behind the others.
For real. I understand the age and the strikeouts but he’s put up 13+ WAR over the last four seasons (3.3 average per year) with 132 HR and a 118 OPS+. He’s also almost never injured. No one offered more than 1/$15 million? Kind of crazy. The Pirates couldn’t beat that? He’d instantly be one of their best hitters.
Maybe they have updated article because it says Pirates offered two years at $15 million per year, or a total of $30 million.
Guess the author did not anticipate Geno to Reds because there is no discussion as to whether he will DH, play 1B, or what with Hayes at 3B, plus Stewart and Steer and Stephenson.
Addition to my own post
They have updated the artile to point out that with Hayes there, Geno is a DH or 1B. Looks like CES is left out in cold!!
C Stephenson
DH Suarez
1B Stewart
2B McLain
SS Elly
3B Hayes
OFs Marte (RF), Steer (LF), Friedl (Center)
Backup OFs Myers, Benson, Bleday has an option
Suspect it’s because Great American is a HR haven and PNC is death to RH power. I was afraid the Bucs would get the Seattle version if he had signed there.
13 homets in 53 games?
I want to see hector rodriguez playing sometime this year.
Definitely mind boggling. Reds end up scoring one of the better deals of the offseason.
It was reported that he didn’t think they were contenders
I wonder what the odds would be if you wanted to wager on the Pirates finishing ahead of the Reds in the regular season or vice versa.
-300 Reds. Bet $300 to win $100 profit
While I’m glad he went to the Reds rather than another large spending team, I feel bad for Pirates fans. This was kind of a no-brainer move for them at that price. It’s got to be a gut punch to know that Nutting won’t even cough up that sum.
The Reds now have both of the Pirates’ third basemen.
Story says they offered 2 years/$30 mill
Bad park for his skill set.
Just because he signed with the Reds doesn’t mean the Pirates didn’t try to sign him. It said the Pirates were a finalist and the fact he has already spent a few years in Cincinnati that probably came into his decision to sign with the Reds.
Where do you get that this is a 40 home run guy? Because he mashed one year? Lol.
He’s a 28 home run guy who can’t field and can’t hit.
He’s hit over 30 seven times. Once again ridiculously stupid.
Matty give me your over under on his home runs this year and I’ll take a screenshot.
I’ll go with 31. We’ll see who is “ridiculously stupid.”
Before you answer, you may want to consider those in professional baseball waited until February 1 to give him $15 million for one year.
Most seasons he has hit 30 or more. He twice had 49 homers including last year. Even if he hit 35 homers and 100 RBI’s, it would likely be more than anyone else on the Sox. Not strong defensively and strikes out way too much, so I know he is not perfect. There are just limited options for a power bat that is right handed.
He’s hit 49 HR’s twice. This past season and last time he was with the Reds he hit 49 in 2019. Your opinion of the guy seems to be in the minority.
Yes, Joe, my opinion of the guy is in the minority.., here.
It’s February 1 and he signed for $15 million for one season. What’s the opinion on him out there?
Sounds like soar grapes. Lol.
Well he has hit 49 home runs in two different seasons and hit 30 or more in 5 seasons so I am guessing that is why most people consider him a 40 home run guy. He can’t field, but he most certainly is a valuable hitter. OPS+ and WRC+ of 100 or more in all but 2 seasons
Dude you’re just wrong. He’s hit under 30 twice since 2017 – 1 off year in Seattle and in the 60 game 2020 season. We get you don’t think he’s the answer for 1 year but there’s also the chance Meyer is this year Campbell. I don’t expect that but the probability might be close to Suarez hitting under 30 barring injury.
Not sour grapes, but rather relief.
I heard the Red Sox were interested in this guy. He would’ve been a DH in a month and a half and we already have three DH’s lol
You may want to delete this post and look up his numbers
casey, everyone here knows his numbers. And 3/4 of these guys are fantasy baseball players looking at OPS and war. The war is nice but isn’t OPS driven by his 49 home runs? He’s going to be 35 and 31 home runs will be the number this year. In my opinion, that’s not enough to make up for all his shortcomings.
The only time his home runs have been that low were when he was playing in a poor hitting park like in Seattle. In Cincinnati he will beat that mark easily.
I did the math. Since 2018 he has averaged 35 hrs and 98 rbis if you don’t count covid shortened 2020 season. Even if you do, and even with his worst 2021 season, that’s still averaging 32 hrs and 90 rbis. In our lineup, as a reds fan, yeah I’ll absolutely take that. I expect him to return to his career averages tho for many reasons, bumping him up to around .246 BA. I anticipate around 35 hr and 100 rbis tho wishful thinking yet realistically wouldn’t be surprised to see him have 110 rbi and hit 45 hr again or even break 50 since I think part of him will be aiming for that again after 2 seasons at 49, for the total, for his future contract, and for Cincinnati which he loves. (Read an article quoting him saying when he got traded that he saw himself spending his whole career here and maybe he’ll come back to finish it someday. And that part of his heart is in cincy. And his contract that expired was the one we extended so he still hasn’t signed with anyone else) welcome home Geno. 👏
Declining defense, in his age 34-35 season, and low OBP. He also had an ice-cold second half. I thought he’d get more based on the power as well as several teams with a need at 3B but I guess it just didn’t pan out.
He may have gotten a guaranteed second year but the uncertainty of whether there will be a season next year probably played into it for the Reds. I know the Pirates offered that guarantee but I think Geno ultimately wanted to come home. and as a Reds fan myself, I couldn’t be happier.
Wouldn’t have predicted this back in 2021, when the Reds actively looked to offload Suarez. They ended up including arb-controlled Jesse Winker as a sweetener to entice Seattle to take Suarez’s contract. Granted that was when Cincy was tanking and slashing payroll.
Yesssss!!!
I panicked for a second thinking it said Red Sox. phew… good for the Reds.
I’m happy the reds signed someone, happy Geno returns to the reds, and happy he didn’t sign with the mariners to block Emerson
Hot dam! said the beaver…and me too.
Suarez was my top off season choice for the Reds and may well be the key to a successful 2026 season. My only fear is at his advanced age, he could suddenly turn into a toad. Hopefully a lot of being the DH will help avoid that..
Now that the Reds have their full time DH, I can see Spencer Steer being moved to LF with Sal Stewart taking over at 1B. Hopefully Suarez still has something left in the tank this year and this could be the move they needed to contend in the NL Central.
I agree, looks like that is the way it is heading.
Also by doing this, the Bleday and Myers signings look a lot better now that we know they won’t be starting.
Stewart lost 25 pounds. I’d see if he can play an average LF. Steer is an average LF but a damn near GG at 1st. I hate hurting your defense twice
I want to see Héctor Rodríguez play sometime this year.
If his progression continues, you probably will. They are known for May/June call ups after a good AAA stint.
That boy played very well in the Dominican league.
Damn, that’s way less than I thought he would get. I figured he’d get at least 20/yr for multiple years
The Red Sox apparently couldn’t beat 1 year, $15 million here. Maybe Breslow is content to go into spring training with a gaping hole at 3B.
The reds are gonna trade them Hayes don’t worry
No, they just didn’t want a butcher in the field at 3B and already have too many players competing for PAs at DH.
M. Mayer is not a “gaping hole”.
E. Suarez after the trade to Seattle: .189 BA, 13 HR, .682 OPS. No thank you.
If Mayer is penciled in for 3B, then who is starting at 2B?
gonzales according to roster resource
I don’t know at second, who’s on first
If Who is on first , then What’s on third not Meyer …(Abbott and Costello)
There’s a huge difference between hitting in Seattle and hitting in Fenway. There’s no way his numbers would be that low playing half as games at Fenway. His OPS was criminally low in Seattle. His numbers were actually pretty good on the road after the trade.
Seattle’s park favors pitchers. Fenway is built for a hitter like Suarez. I assume they were concerned about the defense or are watching the budget.
Any team likely could have beat that. The article now states the Pirates actually did. Other teams chose not to, or Eu just didn’t want to play for them. I’m guessing the Red Sox just had no interest.
HBan22, Lol misinformed baseball fan. Marcelo Myers will play third base for the Red Sox and everyone in Red Sox nation is praying for a new second baseman to come through the door any day now lol.
The question is where will this right handed batting, power hitter come from to take over second?
HBan22, By the way, even if they had signed this guy, there would still be a “gaping hole at third base” because they’d have to DH him after the first two months.
But the Red Sox don’t have an opening at DH, in fact they have three DH’s on the roster right now lol.
Get outa here bitter Red Sox fans. Let us have our day lol
Bigwhiffa, You’re absolutely right, but I have to address the bitter anti-Red Sox fans who say Boston screwed up by not signing this guy. That’s just inaccurate.
This is a great signing for the Reds or any other team with a need for him.
He is a bad fit for the Boston Red Sox. They’re looking for defense behind their great pitching staff. Do they need 49 home runs? They sure do but they’ll find 31 somewhere else which is what Gino will hit this year.
So yes, go Reds. I’m all for this. Excellent. But I’m fighting off anti-Red Sox haters at the same time.
Homer Simpson reading this on a piece a paper and then screaming the f word at the top of his lungs gif here
Fulltime DH with some playing time at 3B & 1B?
Interesting how the market ended up valuing him and Arraez very similarly
Suarez at $15M seems so much better a deal than Arraez at $12M!
Not if the team already has too many s/o artists as it is..
3.6 vs 1.2 bWAR. Arraez’ ceiling is probably Suarez’ floor.
Neither plays good defense and both only have one tool really
Fortunately, that one tool is what the Reds desperately need.
Suarez is a game-changing threat off the bench. That is a skill, too.
Arraez is a …tickle.
I’ll take 40 home runs over an empty batting average any day of the week.
Really brewers you couldn’t give him that?
They’re locked in to a guy named Yelich at DH. Don’t sleep on Chourio in Year 3.
Why are people pretending that suarez is devers level of bad defensively at 3B cause he’s not
Cases like this is why MLB should have a signing deadline. Eugenio likely gets more if he signed earlier, but lost leverage as ST nears and suitors satisfy openings elsewhere.
Great deal for the Reds though. Are there any examples of both team and player picking up the mutual option?
One of the writers here recently mentioned it’s been like fifteen years or something
Oppo- Wow, that’s even more extreme of a rarity than I realized. Thanks.
“The Dodgers are ruining baseball.”
“We need a signing deadline so players can make more and they don’t sign with teams like the Reds.”
Hora- How did you get big market bias from a player friendly proposal of a signing deadline?
I was advocating for Eugenio’s seemingly light contract- I could careless which of the 30 teams give it to him.
And the Dodgers comment, lol, griping to gripe?
I wonder if anyone named Horace has ever gone by Hora in the history of Horaces.
Vani- That is a damn good question. Almost as good as chocolate.
Or just hore …
Myname – I thought you would get my point. Lobbying for changes to improve players pay makes it even more difficult for small market teams to afford these players. It only further helps the big spenders by restricting players to a smaller pool of potential clubs.
They’re more likely to go by Fat Kid than they would Hora.
Hora- I respect the consensus opinion, but I feel the frenzy of a deadline forces more concise off-season planning, which would tunnel the focus of big spenders and allow small market teams to target and snag a specific high performer. This also allows small market owners to show their true colors.
If player friendly methodology negatively impacts the league as a whole then I think we have larger issues in play.
As others have said, the mutual option is almost never picked up and the main purpose seems to be shifting money around with buyouts.
I don’t see any buyout mention but I’m assuming there is one. Say it’s $3M. This allows them to essentially sign Suarez for 1yr/$18M while only having $15M on the books next year.
And re: a signing deadline: I don’t think it would help players at all and I think it’s a total gimmick that wouldn’t help the game in any meaningful way.
I also don’t understand the people who think it would suddenly generate all sorts of interest in the MLB offseason and make it less “boring.”
The unavoidable problem MLB has with generating interest in its offseason is that it coincides with the regular season and playoffs of America’s new civil religion: the NFL.
ESPN is not going to suddenly devote more time to MLB at the expense of the golden goose if there’s a condensed FA period. That’s a fantasy.
Besides, you get the condensed FA period and then what? Basically a few months of dead air with the occasional trade? That’s supposed to be more exciting?
I agree. I prefer the MLB offseason the way it is. Having all of the moves being done in a short amount of time and then nothing the rest of the offseason would be kind of boring. Knowing that a move could occur pretty much at any time in the offseason makes things more interesting and gives you a reason to keep engaged.
I don’t understand the logic. So why should players like Suarez benefit because they held out and eventually sign a lesser deal? Every year there are players without a chair when the music stops playing. Even Boras clients.
I’m just glad it’s one year, we didn’t need another Moose, Candelario situation
This contract should put Suarez close Candelario for highest paid player on the Reds’ 2026 payroll.
Happy for the Reds!!! Happy for Geno!!! Hit 55 bombs this season Geno, you could even hit 60 in this park!!!
Well, at least Arraez isnt alone in getting railroaded this off season.
How bad does this make Kim’s deal in ATL look?
Why are you upset? Im sure they’re quite happy with $15-18M for one season.
Shocking….
Great pickup by the Reds. Cubs and Brewers are good, but it seems like the Reds won’t let them be! Wonderful! That means the top FA bats are off the board. Just waiting for Gallen and Valdez to sign.
One year, 15 million is dirt cheap for Suarez. Surprised couldn’t get a multiple year deal.
Suarez will strike out a ton and hit some homers, which are the two things that he can do. The only question is which tendency will prevail. Too many strikeouts mean the Seattle version of Suarez, who was worthless. Enough homers mean the Arizona version of Suarez, who was useful.
At least the Reds will keep him at DH and it’s only a one-year deal. So the possible downside is limited. And Cincinnati badly needs somebody who can get the ball over the fence now and then.
I doubt he strikes out as much as he did in Seattle. From what I understand, the batter’s eye in Seattle causes a lot of problems for hitters.
There’s also the problem of the Marine layer. The heavy air causes more drag and results in breaking balls having more movement and fastballs riding differently.
You also can’t forget about the psychological factor that hitters tend to swing harder in Seattle due to the ball not carrying as well.
Those factors tend to result in higher strikeout numbers for hitters.
Gee, it doesn’t seem to bother Cal Raleigh much. Geno is a career 31% strike out guy. If he hits a few HR’s that’s great but most of them seem to be solo blasts. Meanwhile, he strikes out with men on base to end a lot of innings. His defense is also below average. That is why Seattle moved on. His presence in Seattle would have blocked a number of infielders.
Just add to what I said in my previous comment, Seattle has been the easiest part to strike out a batter in the majors for the last while. Hitters strike out roughly 13% more than a neutral park. Cincinnati is roughly neutral with a 99 park factor for strikeouts with Seattle having a park factor of 113 for strikeouts.
What the heck? 29 other teams should’ve beaten this offer.
Not the Astros!
29 other teams didn’t have an opening at DH.
Pirates wiff again! This is a classic display of such a Pirates offseason it’s hilarious and honestly anything but shocking.
Hey now, they almost thought about having a conversation about maybe signing somebody this winter so they did do something!
Schiste!
I wanted the Orioles to sign him
Where would he have fit with Westburg, Mayo, Mountcastle, Basallo, and Alonso on the team? Wouldn’t you rather give 1/15 to Verlander? Or use the $15MM towards Valdez or Gallen?
I would have switched Westy to second and Suarez to third. ….i would have found a way….and the Orioles still could sign a pitcher
You’re not happy with Westburg? All around good and soon to be very good player
No,, I like Westy! It’s Holliday, that worries me or I think he is a waste at 2nd base and would make a terrific CF’er
Suarez would be a bench piece in Baltimore and we already have a $15 million dollar bench piece in Tyler O’Neill.
He’s a steal at this price.
In that ballpark, yes.
Not in Seattle or Pitt.
Reds finally spend a little cash and make a strike for the big bat they desperately needed, congrats Cincy fans.
Good to see Cincy get some legit slug that suits the budget short-term. Ride the young arms to a wild card and let the chips fall.
Phew…. dodged a bullet at PNC.
Now let’s get Bohm for a middling prospect while taking on all the salary.
Or one of the decent Mets’ excess corner guys.
YES!!!!!!
Good move for the Reds. I wouldn’t be surprised if he hit 50 homers this season, a large number of those coming against my poor Cubs, whose management never seems able to make the obvious right move.
I think the Reds will win the NL Central, followed by the Pirates, Brewers, Cubs, and Cardinals.
You do realize he never hit that many when he was in his prime playing for Cinci. Still, if he hits 35, that will still help.
In 2019 he hit 49 HRs for Cincinnati.
Juiced ball season.
I actually feel good about this for you and fellow Reds fans. Ownership finally did something.
I second the young man’s sentiment for the Redleg fans. The small market team fans have to stick together.
I think that the Pirates at least made a viable offer but their good fallback position has been eliminated
Seems to me that two years at $40M total should have done the trick but Suarez clearly wants to hit in Cincinnati and clearly liked his original stay there.
Finallly, a non-minor league signing by Krall!
Power swing in a homer friendly park = fun to watch.
Disgusting that Detroit didn’t make him a better offer. McGonicle is unproven and can play SS, Javy could play CF/utility, makes no sense
Agree. Too many strikeouts but at that salary why not sign him to DH and play 3B occasionally? There is literally no one left on offence for the Tigers to sign to beef up the offence. McGonigle will be a good add but why not grab another proven bat. I’m disappointed that they have done nothing on offence.
If only you had a short term front line pitcher you could trade for offense. The highest return the Tigers will get for him is right now.
I agree. If they cannot sign him then trade him. I also think they can trade him and not take a step back this year between getting a solid return for him and jumping on Gallen and/or Valdez. Its just a matter of who is going to blink first.
Good signing in my opinion
Kinda underwhelming deal for an easy 40 HR guy. Albeit not a great OBP and whiffs too much.
Great move!
Alright, Krall.after a long off season of bashing the neglected offense after every move that was made. I now, will pay you on the back, sir.
FINALLY!
In order for Geno to hit close to 50 HRs he’ll need to take at least 600 PAs or play almost every game, let’s see.
As his free agency drug on I really thought it was playing out where he would end up in Pittsburgh on a 1 year contract.
This is a great move by the Reds.
Not only does Geno fill the “middle of the order thumper” spot the Reds absolutely needed (lot of Ks, but home runs a plenty), but from a pure vibes perspective, I can’t think of a better player for a still young Reds team than Eugenio Suarez.
Good vibes only with this one.
How were more teams not in on him if it was this price?
I would imagine he wouldn’t have signed this cheap for teams that spend more, he was a red for seven years there ahas robbed something there
It makes no sense!!!
Friedl CF, Marte RF, EDLC SS, Suarez DH, Steer LF, Stewart 1B, Stephenson C, McLain 2B, KBH 3B.
I love it, we will see if Stewart forces his way into the two hole
Solid line up. Not hard to imagine Marte and steer finally breaking out. If so, they compete for the central
Hayes the weak spot but they can live with it after the others.
Cherington now who are we going to get to play third base?
May I interest you in a Lenyn Sosa?
Bohm
They will probably get someone extra on the Mets who is a meh player.
The Phillies have Otto Kemp but their pursuit of Bichette tells me that they do not care about the 110% tax bracket and will not leave themselves short now by trading Bohm.
I think that the reason that Suarez signed here is that the even though the Pirates offered a longer contract Suarez is banking on hitting a lot of home runs again in a right handed hitters park in which he has played before and is comfortable.Plus the Reds did make the playoffs last year.
He is banking on a big multi year contract next year.
Good luck with that.
My numbers were $20M a year for two years. He may also have been leery about playing half his games in Pittsburgh.
He will probably DH in Cincinnati and thus become a DH instead of a third baseman. It seems that he will make less as such next year unless he has another very good year.
It is a shame because the Pirates did need his power and we may never know if they offered him the $40 M two year contract that I suggested.
I don’t think the PNC wall in left had anything to do with it. At all. He simply opted for a place he knows well and likely wasn’t convinced about the Pirates
Home run hitters have egos. Think they can hit bombs anywhere. And this guy can
Shame.
Two new bats aren’t going to do it this year
I have come to your conclusion that I will be happy with a winning record and a hustling and a good fundamentals team.
Suarez would have put them into reasonable contention for a wild card.
We must give credit to Nutting and Cherington for reasonable offers to him and Schwarber. It is clear that right handed hitters especially and non believers of contention rule the day.
For him I would have taken a chance though and signed him to $20 M this year and given him the option for $15M next year.
Kudos to the Reds for this move.
Hard to be upset with 49 bombs for $15MM.
He’s a flawed player but the Reds stadium is an ideal hitting situation. For the price it definitely works/
Schwarber is a year younger, takes many more walks and has averaged 48 HR per 162 over the past four seasons compared to Suarez’s 34 per 162.
If he was putting up 40+ year in and year out it would be a different story.
Nevertheless, the salary does seem underwhelming. I would have guessed $20.
Good spot for Geno. His career splits are good vs.the NL central teams; as apposed to the AL west teams.
Really nice low-risk pickup for the Reds. Meanwhile, the Tigers will trot out a platoon of Zach McKinstry and Jace Young or Matt Vierling. I’m jealous!
At $15M, Tigers should have been in on that for sure.
Interesting that the Mariners were not in on Geno for a one year deal around that price. I understand they may not want to block Emerson/Williamson BUT I hope that they still have a move for a bat left in them. Good luck Geno! Will be rooting for you!
It’s doubtful he would have signed in Seattle for that money. He’s not going to put up the offensive numbers in Seattle he will in Cincy. The discount this year is to put up the numbers to get a better deal next year.
Thank goodness the Tigers didn’t sign him! Another Rob Deer!
26.8 war for Suarez. Look at Rob Deer’s and decide if they are comparable
With Suarez signed I hope the reds and Red Sox come up with a deal for Jarren Duran. Maybe a package like Chase Petty, Kebron Hayes and 1 or 2 other minor leaguers for Duran. Stewart would then move to 3rd steer at 1st. Duran in left and Suarez dh
I’ve thought of scenarios like this but it probably takes a better prospect than petty, and is still unlikely but man would that change the offense
Myself and others like the locked on podcast hosts seem to think you start with and take the offensive hit by including Stephenson, along with petty (or aguiar or williamson imo if they prefer either of those).
I am in the minority to keep hayes if we get duran (who’s been my top request all offseason), especially now that we have geno. Geno and duran offensively can account for downgrading to Trevino and keeping hayes.
Since Boston added multiple SP that makes it highly unlikely Singer theyd want him. (Though I think he likely may get traded at deadline no matter the record).
Boston reportedly wants a catcher and prospect pitching (to develop behind the older FA vet placeholders). And since Stephenson clearly isn’t resigning in cincy and we have a ton of prospect pitchers (after burns/lowder who I def wouldnt include), a trade for duran might look like:
(C) Stephenson
(SP) petty OR aguiar OR Williamson
Maybe a low level OF prospect
If we managed to get duran and Suarez and improve the bullpen to go with the young roster that is sure to bounce back even a little, and the top 3 rotation in all of baseball, I would lose my mind. Would be the best offseason and give me the most confidence and optimism I have had since at least 2011/2012 but maybe longer.
Let’s be real here
You would probably need to add Collier and one of the 19 shortstops in the system to get their attention.
Then you have a crater size hole at catcher because you saw Trevino couldn’t handle every day when Stephenson was hurt, his numbers took a nose dive. Plus Duno is at least two years away.
But I agree it is obvious Stephenson isn’t resigning. I wonder if they even tried after extending Trevino. Like Homer over Cueto and signing one year wonder Candelario, they made the wrong choice again.
Not sure it is true that it’d have to be collier and a ss prospect unless low level not high ceiling. Duran is really good but also almost 30 and just resigned on a 1 yr deal around his arb years starting I believe. Plus, they want more ML ready talent nit just prospects with them being playoff caliber. That’s the same mindset most outside of cincy said about hunter all offseason. (Trade him for prospects). No. Teams don’t just want prospects when they are ready to compete, even if it is harder in mlb to facilitate trades amongst ml ready players. I could see then asking for collier sure, but not with Stephenson and a ss or even petty who’s been a disappointment thus far. That’s too much and I’ve been clamoring for Duran all offseason as he’d been a massive game changer for us in every phase. Duran is not even the best OF on their roster why would he take multiple top prospects and a top 10-12 catcher? Again, he isn’t 25.
Seperately, your perspective on Trevino isn’t accurate, even I’d you discount the short spurts where he overproduced offensively from his career averages that people forget. Keep in mind 2 things. 1) they signed ml backup and poorer offensive catcher in Ben rortvedt because they value defense there as most of franconas catchers were in Cleveland reportedly. And like locked on podcast host also said too, you don’t carry 3 catchers especially when that position group cost more than your OF. And 2) reportedly, Trevino was showboated for lack of better terms at reds fest, putting him on every center stage, fan q and a, saying he’s gonna be a future manager, etc.. while stephenson was scratched from appearing. So seemed they are trying to really push the Trevino narrative. Can he catch 140 games a year? Doubtful. But it’s realistic they think he and rortvedt could manage the backstop while making up for thr offensive production of Stephenson with geno (and hopefully duran). That’d also save them 6.5 mill to bring down the 8-10 they just went over last year by. He said it’d be about the same payroll and Goldsmith said they extended and went beyond as of now, but it’d bring it closer to the average. And we know how they feel about every million even if it’s 3.
Honestly, I know Stephenson has produced above average offensively and I like him as most fans do, but I was one of the rarer ones ok with him either staying or going. So if they didn’t try after extended Trevino I’m not too upset. Very few catchers are good offensively so most are serviceable and others can be acquired to upgrade over rortvedt when needed. But give me Duran and Suarez over Stephenson, and a prospect not named lowder or burns (hopefully not collier but if so, again that would be tough to swallow but probably relatively fair. But again they want an ml catcher and prospect pitching behind the vets more it seems)
Kd is be fine with that scenario but I don’t think Boston does it. Where do I find this pod cast you speak of?
It’s everywhere! They are regular guys but they get media access at times in different sports and some are writers from other sports sites. I can’t believe you haven’t heard of it by now. Lol. It’s the number 1 sports podcast network I believe. It was relatively unknown a couple yrs ago but blew up because they cover every nfl, mlb, NHL, nba, team and have daily weekday podcasts for leagues in general as well (or sundays for nfl). Each episode is 30 min or less (3 commercial breaks you can skip almost 2 min of each) and broken up into segments. They have it on Spotify, apple and all that but the YouTube is where they all do live shows and engage with the other fans once in a while. During the offseason the episodes aren’t daily but still a few times a week. I think the reds hosts just said they eclipsed 12k followers on locked on reds alone. There is definitely opinions I don’t agree with on locked on reds or jags for example because everyone has their opinion, but this thread is an example of one where I do agree with them. I haven’t listened to other teams but It seems like the locked on reds hosts are closer to the avg fan that respond to everything vs my locked on jags host who used to work radio and is media credentialed so has access to players and coaches for the media sessions. It’s cool tho! Just search locked on (insert whatever team)
open.spotify.com/show/67OQdPhmfWxDrX8jZbv4XD?si=lv…
Oh and I think we have enough prospects at diff positions to go with Stephenson to give them something they want besides lowder burns and collier. Shoot it’d hurt but because our infield is young and in the bigs, I’d even be willing to consider like Stephenson and arroyo if they dont want petty or aguiar. It’d hurt but I’d be willing to go as far as throwing in 1 of maxwell or mey too. So Stephenson, Maxwell OR Mey, and Petty OR Aguiar OR Arroyo OR Williamson. Some combo of 2 or 3 of those guys would get it done. That’s too much too for them to say no to 3 young prospects from that group for a very good 29 yr old OF facing Arbitration.
Brewers, Cubs, and Pirates ought to be sweating because the Reds seem like they’re serious.
As a Pirates fan I’m not thrilled to read he turned us down our better offer. It’s obvious RH power hitters have no interest playing half their games at PNC.
If you want to see the silver lining, this probably means it’s more likely Cutch is signed and Konnor Griffin starts at SS on OD.
I’d much prefer a trade for a 3rd base guy than resign Cutch to be a negative WAR DH.
Yep. See if you can shake Bohm loose from the Phillies. Nice idea that is highly unlikely
Do you want Hayes back?
Dear Lord, no
I’d rather have an American Legion kid down there who plays with this hair on fire and who wants to be there before that guy
I like having Hayes, until the rest of the offense is slumping that is. If the reds got one more good bat(of) having good glove Hayes batting eighth is fine.
if its true the Pirates offered 30m/2y then i have doubts the pirates were a serious contender to get him. 2y 40m probably would’ve gotten him. I guess if you are only really signing him as a DH 20m AAV seems kinda high in this situation.
Im sure their offee was like 2 years 20 mil
Joe- The Pirates clearly would have had to overpay and this is an excellent example of what they probably often encounter with free agents.
aye
Krall comes through. Builds a great bullpen first and then caps off the winter with a very affordable power hitter signing Let the condenscending dribble subside!
I thought he’d at least get 2 years at that AAV, good pick-up.
As a Cubs fan, this guy is like a 17 year cicada.
Good for the Reds. He will hit at least 15 HRs this year versus my Cubs. That guy destroys Chucago pitching. Ugh!!!
Sell the team
Things I Am Waiting On.
1. Valdez and Gallen to sign
2. MLBTR Weekend Chat
3. Spring Training
4. Opening Day
5. Astros To Sign LHB
Suarez’s homer numbers wouldn’t have translated to PNC Park. PNC is where right handed power hitting goes to die. Just another reason he chose to go to Cincy where he can inflate those numbers.
Baloney. I’ll grant you that they translate better to the Reds ballpark but come on already. They play 81 games here. You’re going to call that a reason? He just didn’t want to come to Pittsburgh. Life goes on
Those are 81 games he won’t be playing at PNC.
And your logic is still ridiculous. Home run hitters hit bombs anywhere. The guy preferred going back to Cincy. That’s all
Not many Geno believers on the open market.
Not the guy I hoped for but Geno does add pop to the lineup. We are substantially better than we were yesterday for a reasonable price. Legit big league hitters from 1 thru 9. Impressive team Krall has assembled. Maybe he can now get some credit for his efforts.
I would not call Hayes a legit hitter, but I would say his D makes up for it, and he has upside at GABP.
well under what crowd source thought. must really love the chili.
Worth it.
Way to go, Scott Harris!!!
Another one bites the dust…
But signing Geno would take ABs away from Jace Jung! Sorry, I could restrain my bitterness and jealousy
As a Reds fan I rarely make predictions, but this looks like a steal. Checking out Geno’s splits last year by playing field is fascinating: baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=suare…
He hit TERRIBLY while playing at home after the trade. But in almost every other AL ballpark, most of which he would have played in after the trade, he hit well. Playing in Seattle was absolutely terrible for him. I bet he was looking forward to “coming home” to Cincinnati.
Of course, where does he play and who does he bump is an issue. The answer is obviously DH at his age and with his defense. He can slot into the field if needed, but he should be the full-time DH. The Reds can’t afford him on defense, they shouldn’t risk added wear-and-tear on his body, and ALL of his value is in his bat. Also, almost every other regularly DH the Reds have played is a scrub, by comparison. Geno has a WAR higher than any player other than Elly, Maybe he gets rested occasionally against a LHP, and Steer or someone else fills in. But assuming everyone stays healthy, we should see Hayes, Elly, McLain, and Stewart across the infield. If McLain never hits, maybe that changes. Hayes is worth a ton on defense especially with this pitching staff, and he hit far better at GABP last year than he has in his career, so he has upside.
It should be a fun team that can compete and it’s cost them little to improve.
Yeah. It’s a steal.
What I find strange is that he didn’t accept the 30 million for 2 years that the pirates offered him.
He wanted to go back to the Reds. It was reported that they had been in contact almost daily for the last month.
He will also hit a lot more home runs there.
The problem though is that he will be a DH and not play the field any more and that will limit his future salaries.
I also think that he is counting on at least hitting another 40 home runs so he will think that he will be able to get a three year contract next year for more annual money.
He may have one more good year left but he could drop off a cliff after that at 35 years old.
Maybe this was a consideration. Maybe the guy wanted to be a DH at this point in his career
Cherrington muffled this one bug time
Wait to see what happens this coming week. Suarez was never a good fit at PNC – let’s hope GMBC finds a decent player for $10m-$20m rather than accepting defeat with Cutch at $5m to put up zero WAR or worse.
Suarez hit 13 HRs and has a .882 OPS in 65 games at PNC Park.
Granted, those numbers probably drop without getting to face Pirate pitchers, since they’ve been pretty awful prior to last year. But zero reason to believe he couldn’t have produced decent numbers in the 81 games he might have played there this year.
Hopefully, they can pivot to option C or D or whatever they’re up to now. But fully expecting a warm body and nothing more at this point, because Cherington is awful at his job.
It was pointed out to me that the 35 year old Ozuna had a bad second half so they may pivot to Hoskins for DH unless he wants too much money and they can get Castellanos for next to nothing from the Phillies.
There are no free agent third basemen left who are viable.
They will have to go with Triolo there especially if Connor can win the shortstop job in Spring Training.
I do not think that there are any viable trade candidates for third base either.
I hope Skenes hits him every time the Pirates play him.
Really hurts where the Pirates are concerned
Adding a couple bats was nice but nowhere near enough unless the planets align.
Ok. I have nailed it three years in a row —
I’ll give it a shot. 74-76 wins this year as they stand now
I wanted him on the Reds(ox)
Good for the Reds, he’ll help lengthen tge lineup, supply power, help the young guys.
The Red Sox talked about right handed power hitter all off season. They landed on Wilson Contreras for $20m
Adolis Garcia – $10m
Eugenio Suarez – maybe $18m
BTW, Patrick Sandoval- hasn’t thrown a pitch, is also getting $18m. For a cost conscious team they sure waste a lot of money
Skenes in 2525
Quasimodo predicted this.
I think that you may have meant Nostradamus.
Good deal. Gives some offense to the reds. Pirates should’ve done this deal however
…says the Yankees fan. Ok buddy.
Double wammy for the Pirates, not only did they fail to land E Suarez, he signed with a division rival. Ugh ugh ugh!
Pirates couldn’t come up with even $16 million. Everyone that said they had no shot to sign Suarez were apparently right.
Been saying all along that they wouldn’t go to the $120M they’d have to go to to add Suarez and the pitcher they want. I wish just once they weren’t so predictable.
They gave Suarez a viable offer.
They just do not believe in overpaying free agents and that is one of the reasons that he went to the Reds.
The other reasons are that he loved playing there and the park is conducive for home runs for a right handed batter.
Suarez sees the $ signs after this year.
Time will tell if he made the right decision.
This is awesome. Good vibes all around.
15 million for 49 homers? He needs to fire his agent ASAP.
34 years old and struck out 30%. I still think he should have gotten more.
he got paid for the WAR otherwise obp is low. Defense average
This guy has 50/50% to make it to HOF. 175 homers away with little injury history.
Lmao.
NZ-This guy has a 5%/5% chance of making the HOF.
Love the guy’s vibe. Hate to watch him hit. ALWAYS behind in the count. As a Mariner fan, I appreciated much of his time in Seattle but glad we’re moving on. If Ben Williamson can find some more pop, he’ll be more than fine at the hot corner.
Surprised the Dodgers didn’t sign him as a right handed PH for $25 million ($15 million deferred).
MLB is broken. I’m willing to miss the entire 2027 season for an equal playing field.
How will missing the season convince the owners of the large market teams to give up most of their revenue to level the playing field?
Hot Corner’s opinion of a Reds free agency signing: “Surprised the Dodgers didn’t sign him as a right handed PH for $25 million ($15 million deferred).
MLB is broken. I’m willing to miss the entire 2027 season for an equal playing field.”
Hot Corner’s opinion of the Silicon Valley: “Surprised the Dodgers didn’t purchase Meta for $3 trillion dollars ($2 trillion deferred). I hope the planet explodes next year.”
Hot Corner’s opinion of the election: “(fart noises) Dodgers something something deferred.”
I am also surprised Dodgers haven’t purchased Meta yet. Something must be amiss with Meta. Can’t be that Dodgers can’t afford it.
Skyline & goetta…..
love it. good for the reds and congrats to their dedicated and long-suffering fan base. wishing you all a fun summer
“In taking just a one-year contract, Suarez seems to be hoping to fully re-establish his market by having a big season in 2026 and then re-entering free agency next winter.”
That’s hysterical. Who are you kidding? The guy knocked out 49 HRs and is about to be 35. His market is 1-2 year contracts under $20M per until he’s cut.
Crazy. $15M one year deal. And to the Reds?
It must have been his desire to come back to Cincy that spurned this deal considering he’s already 35 coming off a 49 HR season. In what world does that type of player ONLY get $15M?
Defensive liability, doesn’t hit nearly for average, he’s old, has zero base running value. Power is the only tool and BA will continue to decline. He is an out most of the time. Love Geno, but 15 mil was too much
He can hit 30-40 HR with 90-100 rbi and an .800+ OPS. Surely that’s more than $15M on a one year deal. My guess is he didn’t want to go to any of the places that offered more money and decided to just try again. I’m sure they’ll be reports in the coming weeks about bigger offers from worse teams.
He’d have been signed earlier if that were the case. The Yankees still need a 3B player and passed on his $15M. He has a good year HR wise. Everything else is meh. And his age isn’t making it any easier. Less likely to repeat.
His strikes out like no other doesn’t walk and has a low average. MLB worships the hr but true baseballers know this battter is busch league stuff
Hey Hollander …. SIGN ANDUJAR!
Why?
Maybe the Reds will score some runs…..
Let’s say he can stick around 6-7 more years and hit 30 hrs a year. Crosses that magical 500 barrier. He obviously is not a HOFer. Still he has that magical number. Would he get in?
I see quite a few Pirates fans blaming ownership for not coughing up the money to sign Suarez but in this instance it wasn’t their ownership, it was the player not wanting to come to Pittsburgh. He has history in Cincinnati and that was his preference to sign with them instead of with the Pirates. Just because you don’t sign a guy it doesn’t always equate to you didn’t try to sign them.
Agreed. I have to believe the Pirates were in on the discussion. Suarez just opted to go back where it started, that’s sll
I agree but dang the pirates depth chart still has a lot of holes. That’s ownership fault
Yeah. Agree there, too
Have to hope Griffin pans out quickly and a few of these kids on the farm can make it to the bigs and actually make an impact.
Frankly, whether or not they sign Suarez is irrelevant here. Bottom line is the Pirates haven’t addressed the hole they have in the lineup in the left side of the infield. Whether or not they made competitive offers matters very little. They will waste another year of the Skenes window because they were unwilling to spend either the cash or the prospect capital required to have a decent offense. Again.
I wasn’t sold on Geno at 20 million per year but at 1 year 15 million, SEA totally cheaped out here. This contract was tailor made for them. as a risk free contract to provide some insurance and leadership in the middle of their contention window.
I wonder how much the park’s were a factor ….Still I think SEA should have went to 16-17 mill on a one year deal.
They are a bat short…hard to count on rookies or unproven bats at 2b 3b and DH. Hard to imagine they ALL produce next year plus #2 catcher is one of the worst hitter in league. that’s a lot of potential zeros in the line.
I don’t love the profile, age or trajectory, but even a Geno in decline would have provided a good 1 year safety net at 3b ad DH and he’s a great clubhouse guy.
Upside is he could hit 40 HR in CIN.
If Seattle spends the money on dpeth upgrades ellsewhere I don’t mind missing on Geno, but if it was just to increase profit it seems very cheap skatey..
I understand wanting to play the young (cheap) guys but the wheels could come off next season real fast if they struggle and there is no depth..
Dude who cares about the analytics. A small market team with a deep pitching staff just added the best bat available. Reds won today. Let’s see how it plays out.
Great name and breakfast food
Teams that win care about analytics.
I agree this is a great sign for CIN.
Very low risk because it’s only one year, but huge upside. In that ballpark geno could go off for a 15 hr month when he’s hot.
Seems like great fit.
Maybe he did not want to play in Seattle. His stats suck here and maybe the Mariners were not interested. If they wanted him they could have got him but at what price if he is trying to increase his future value.
Schwarber who is 32, hit .240 with a .928 OPS, a 150 OPS+, and a .365 OBP last season. His SO% was 27.2% with a 14.9% BB rate. He walked at about double MLB average.
Suarez who is 34, hit .228 with a .824 OPS, a 126 OPS+, and a .298 OBP last season. His SO rate was 29.8% with a 7% BB rate. His BB% was about 30% worse than MLB average. Suarez play at 3B detracted from his value, not added to it. He should be at 1B or DH.
Hope that helps you understand the differences between those two.
Were they ever really in on Schwarber or was it a case of good PR or a pledge to be taken more seriously? We’ll never know
You’re right where the comparison is concerned. And clearly, if they were actually in on Schwarber, they had a lot of competition from some very big markets while also dealing with the player’s expectations.
I’m not heartbroken that they missed on Suarez. A guy who hits occasional bombs but strikes out of a lot reminds me a great deal of Suwinski a couple years back, with a few more homers
They could’ve used that kind of power, that kind of threat in this lineup and with the stats you listed, I have to think Suarez didn’t have nearly the interest and the Pirates could’ve sweetened things more, but as far as we know, didn’t
I’d prefer Bohm. Or Paredes. And down from there, one of the Mets guys.
But I’m thinking they’ll settle on Triolo. Solid glove. Maybe they can find a way to squeeze some offensive consistency out of him
Wouldn’t that be nice
Missed opportunity for the Sox. Looking more and more like no help on the Infield is coming.
I wonder if the Sox would consider trying Triston Casas at 3B? He did play 8 games there in 2019
Phew!
I would have re-signed Austin Hays, then spent the remaining 10mil Suarez money on bullpen grounder arms that aren’t complete crap-shoots. It’s not like they had any shortage of infielders. Problem is, if they wanted those arms, they needed to act quickly, which they didn’t.
Doug B- Would rather have signed Andujar at that price or a little less. Between starters and relievers the Reds have one of the best pitching rooms in baseball. And now they have protection for Elly.
Hard pass on Hays. Guy missies way too much time and is no where near the power threat Geno is.
Pirates should have offered 2/33M, but were too focused on re-signing Andrew McCutcheon and Tommy Pham.
Pirates would have needed at least $35 M for two years or what I had suggested all along $20 M a year for two years.
Arraez a future hall of famer gets 12 mil, Suarez who should be in the minors gets 15,baseball needs an awakening.
“In taking just a one-year contract, Suarez seems to be hoping to fully re-establish his market by having a big season in 2026 and then re-entering free agency next winter.” His agent advised him to do this? It’s a risk.
I´m a reds fan but I find strange is that he didn’t accept the 30 million for 2 years that the pirates offered him.
Sometimes it’s not just about the money.
Here is an outside the box trade for the Padres and Reds:
Reds:
(2B) Matt McClain
(OF) Rece Hinds
(SP) Chase Petty
(1B) Christian Encarnacion-Strand
–for–
Padres:
(2B) Jake Cronenworth
(OF) Ramon Laureano
(C) Luis Campusano
This is a weird trade but the Reds improve. Padres get a nice pitching prospect in Petty and McClain on the bench behind Song. He could olay some OF too. Hinds and Strand are your MLB ready lottos.
Laureano too struggled for a few years before he had his breakout season. Hinds, McClain and Strand could all rise at some point.
Who says no? I feel like its the Reds but Laureano is enticing.
ABS- Why is it that people think that they can get McClain,Petty, Hinds or CES for a bag of practice baseballs and a used Gatorade cooler? No way would I make a trade for Petty, McClain or Hinds, and CES is still a question mark.
Reds are in win now mode with Suarez signing. Win in ’26 mode and Laureano is coming off a big season.
The Padres likely dont make that trade as they are always in win now mode but I thought there was a case to be made for the trade working out well for both sides.
Can take Encarnacion-Strand out of the trade.
Laureano has significant value this season, and Cronenworth offers more consistent offensive production at second base. Reds would have to add a prospect or two to McClain, Petty and Hinds.
I still think the Padres are the team that passes. They dont trade MLB production very often, but this is a better trade.
Reds:
(2B) Matt McClain (MLB)
(OF) Rece Hinds (MLB)
(SP) Chase Petty (AAA)
(OF) Carlos George (A)
(OF) Tyson Lewis (A)
–for–
(OF) Ramon Laureano (MLB)
(2B) Jake Cronenworth (MLB)
(C) Luis Campusano (MLB)
I think its a fair trade but the Padres arent coming off Laureano.
Tyson Lewis? There are probably very few Padres in their entire organization that the Reds value more than 6 years of Tyson Lewis, yet you want him along with 22 more years of young, MLB-ready controllable talent? Woweee. Awful high on your own guys, methinks.
its not a bad trade if the Padres were punting in ’26. Thats the only way it really makes sense.
Reds and Padres both look like contenders, neither in the market for prospects, but Lewis looks like a good player. He catches fire and McClain continues to slump, Lewis could move up.
This was a guy that the Brewers should’ve ponied up the money for, as they need a power bat in the lineup. Ridiculous that they couldn’t get the owner to pry open his wallet just this once!
Pirates really made a wrong move here by not getting this guy on the team. He is going to instead be on one of the teams they play the most and mashing balls into the seats against them.
Seems like he wanted to not only parlay a good season into a big pay day next year but also chose the familiarity of playing for a franchise that is similar to the Reds but likely a little ahead of them where a playoff push is concerned this season and has a ballpark more conducive to right handed power. Apologies to things I’ve written before as I guess it indeed was a consideration.
Mackey is saying that it now expedites the Pirates search for one more big bat in his column in today’s PG since they were waiting on him. Hard to see them bringing in anyone of this stature because again, what trade capital do they really have to get such a hitter?
I certainly understand why Suarez went to the Reds over the Pirates but the Pirates could or should have made a better offer here I think.
For free agents there is not much left for 3B for them. Trading would be the only avenue I see for them and they certainly have plenty to trade if their trade partner is interested in minor league talent. They have one of the best represented farm systems in the top 50, although none of them are likely to be dealt. They could offer Keller for a team that needs a reliable SP.
I think Vientos, Baty (who may not be available at all), Gorman (unlikely due to same division, but the Pirates traded Hayes inside the division last year), Jung, or Bohm could all be options.
Agreed, and I’d take Bohm as my choice out of this group. I’d hope Keller is off the table now as without him, all you have is Skenes and a group of promising but green rookies who will have to really mature quickly over a long season.
Minor league pitching, sure
It’s ironic to me that many are pointing to the Pirates farm system as being attractive as trade bait but the simple fact is that they’ve produced no impact position players during Cherington’s tenure
Bohm and Paredes are one thing, but other guys whose names are being bandied about may be better than the alternative of Triolo and Nick playing 3rd but all have their own question marks about consistency
Guess we shall see. It seems clear at least that the Pirates realize they have other moves to make. I agree with you. If all they were doing was simply matching the offers of other teams, they missed the boat here
They now have 15m to spend elsewhere. This guy only does 1 thing hit hrs. What are the odds he hits 49 hrs again. Not good but if he can any place it’s Cincinnati. But 40 some there is 30 some in Pittsburgh. I would guess he hits 30 some which would be 20 some in Pittsburgh. Worth 15m. But thats all he does. He can’t run. Awful defense. Doesn’t walk. Strikes out an insane amount. If they let KG play SS you have Triolo at 3b which is average. Or trade for a average hopefully can be above average 3b.
If anyone thought he will hit 40 50 hrs I think he gets a much bigger contract.
I’m betting they will fill with the kinds of add-ons they do each off season now. But then, they surprised me so far this year
The Griffin issue is going to be fascinating to watch. Even if he rips the cover off of the ball I have to think there will be some trepidation about bringing him north right from the jump.
I agree with your views on Suarez although I’m betting he’ll hit his share of homers and would have done similar here
The upside of signing him was simply getting something they currently don’t have in terms of power and runs.
I read something from a Seattle fan here that reinforced what I’d seen in the limited views I’ve had, that he hits a lot of solo shots but leaves a lot of guys on base. Together with his K rate and defense, maybe that’s why the Pirates didn’t go overboard
They won’t let KG play SS at least to open the season. A prospect like him They won’t risk the team losing extra contract time. He could probably play well enough offensively now and defensively probably the same if not a plus.
Triolo at 3B is great for defense only bit he can’t hit enough to stay at 3B full time.
The team was low in power last year and Suarez fit that need because that is all he does.
I think if he’s ready he will start season. Team is being run by two men desperate to keep their jobs. KG can make that happen and if he can’t they simply send him down. They can also give him a contract so it won’t matter.
You’d think so, but since I’ve been a Pirates fan they have never called up a deserving prospect where they’d stand to lose a year of control.
Skenes is a perfect comparison for this as it is recent and they were equally dominant in their minor league tenure.
I can only hope you’re right and the job security for BC pushes him to start KG, because he gives us the best chance to win a game both with his bat and glove, and the other option is Nick Gonzales who would be fine to serve as an INF bat off the bench and get at bats on travel days.
Welcome to being a pirates fan! Good to have new fans. They had rookie Jared Jones make opening day roster in 2024.
Skenes is awful comparison. They realized he was special and wanted to protect his arm. There was no way he was going to pitch all season. He hardly had any minor league time and they wanted him to learn and master a new pitch.
Jones isn’t on the same comparison level as KG though. Jones was a fringe top 100 guy after 2023 whereas KG is the consensus top prospect right now.
There aren’t even many use cases for this scenario in general for a 19 year old who is highly rated to open on a roster.
Mlb pipeline since inception has the following players not make the opening day roster in their age 19 season. Trout, Matt Moore, Harper,, Profar, Buxton, Benintendi, vlad Jr, Tatis, Franco, Couric.
Now some of the latter ones missed a year in the minors due to covid but the general consensus for guys ranked at the top under 20 is that they don’t break camp.
This will be my 27th year watching this team since I moved here in ’99, and they’ve never rushed anyone that is this hyped before.
I’d love if KG broke camp with the team and started game 1 of the season. I’d actually buy an opening day ticket and take my son probably and get some merchandise to support the team just for that decision.
Hopefully you’re right but based on the data, it is likely he opens in AAA.
Now you just want to argue instead of saying opps I forgot about Jones. Not in the mood. Yes you are right the pirates never called up the best prospect in baseball at age 19. Won’t ever extend kg or skenes or anyone because they never spent that kind of $ before. Fake news KG is #1 prospect. Pirates never had the number 1 prospect in baseball so it’s impossible for them to have one.
I’m just saying that Jones isn’t a good comparison because he wasn’t a consensus #1 overall ranked prospect. Not only that but he was also 3 years old than KG which is probably the most important reason a comparison shouldn’t be drawn.
I’ll refocus my point here.
It is unlikely that KG makes the opening day roster based on historical precedent from the team in regard to their own prospects not reaching the major leagues early enough to lose that year of control as well as league wide precedents that show over time that 19 year olds that are ranked in the top 5 do not make the opening day roster.
As much as I would love to see KG break camp, it would simply be an unprecedented move for not just the Pirates, but for any team in the league.
Some of the greatest younger hitters to debut in my lifetime didn’t make the opening day roster at 19 such as Trout, Soto, and Harper. Using that historical context I think we can assume it would be highly unlikely and possibly one of the first times a 19 year old has made the opening day rosterin the current CBA that encourages teams to hold them down a few months to extend team control.
You can post all your history precedent you want. You have a loser mindset I don’t. I don’t care if no one has ever done it before. Or if he was 18 17. KG could be the first. Not saying he will. But if he shows he is ready you have desperate people who could never make this amount of $ ever again if they are fired. A owner who would love nothing more than a winning record to boost his awful attendance and get a better TV deal and more sponsors and hopefully some playoff revenue. Latest cba also introduced ppi. If you are waiting on a better time to call up at 19 year old you might have a wait. Yeah I don’t care about history at all. People like you we would all be riding horses instead of planes on a flat earth with Babe Ruth as our hr champion. If KG don’t start I sure hope Ben has a better reason than because the worst ran team in baseball didn’t start Trout 15 years ago.
You’re outdoing yourself in boorishness these days
“Loser mindset?” Because he discussed past precedent? To use your example, if you’d have been in charge of NASA you’d have been ok with the idea of launching guys into space before test firing the rockets. Only a “loser mindset” would worry about details like taking the time to make sure it was ready and not liable to burn up some astronauts on the launchpad.
I hope Griffin is all we hope he is. I look forward to seeing him. But how many guys have been rushed to the majors in any sport only to spin their wheels and quickly lose confidence?
Terrible example
Having Griffin skip AAA after only 21 games in AA and having one minor league season would be a very high risk move. If he forces that call, sure, have him as the SS on Opening Day. But the default has to be starting him out in Altoona or Indy. I don’t know what a kid could even do in the spring to demonstrate he’s ready to go from low A to MLB in a single calendar year, but it seems like a long shot.
And if that doesn’t work out and Griffin struggles at MLB? THAT will result in Ben getting fired, for certain. Whereas it seems simply losing 90 games doesn’t affect his job security in the least.
As good as yours, grasshopper
Why wouldn’t someone with a winning mindset test the rockets? Makes zero sense. Obviously they would.
Are you saying KG hasn’t been tested since he hasn’t been in AAA? Orb thinks AAA is something and needed it seems. As someone who watches more minor league baseball than mlb I promise you he isn’t missing much. Just look at the Pirates AAA. It’s all washed up has beens who can’t get a major leage contract or other teams failed prospects or their own failed prospects. I want to see guys have as lil AAA time as possible. It’s just for manipulation and depth and reclamation projects.
Trout, Matt Moore, Harper,, Profar, Buxton, Benintendi, vlad Jr, Tatis, Franco, Couric. All before ppi. Last decade KG absolutely wouldn’t make opening day roster. No chance. I would destroy the pirates if they did it. This decade elite prospects make opening day every year now. Numerous ones. Very common. You’re assuming things off of outdated useless data.
That additional year sounds nice but Skenes Cruz Reynolds Keller Lowe Horwitz Bubba Ashcraft aren’t going to be here for it. You just traded 6 years of Burrows for 1 year of Lowe. Signed O’hearn. 2026 is the year.
Skipping AAA is fine. Skipping AA and AAA both, not so much.
Only guy from your list above that seems to truly be in a comparable state is Bryce Harper, and even he didn’t break camp in his second year. Franco sort of similar, but with the COVID year in there.
High school kid with a single year of minor league play breaking camp with the major league team hasn’t happened. If you want to throw in that half season kids got after being drafted, Griffey is the closest match I can find.
AI results may not be accurate, I suppose.
Not my list
As frustrating as being a fan of this team is, I cannot fully fledge go irate over their past two off-seasons last year made an excellent move hiring Francona to groom their young talent and resigning Martinez and acquiring Singer to have an actual MLB SP depth…fell a little short on their hopes MM would return to form asap I still wouldn’t move him too much talent…and this season for as much as we impatiently waited for a serious power bat which they now have I like the move a lot should help deepen the lineup and help Elly take a larger leap forward in that lineup…not sure why I’m in the minority on thinking Hayes at 3B is a positive I’m sorry guy is legitimately the best fielding 3B in baseball (I realize hitting is lighter than desired not a complete loss)…and adding arms and resigning Pagan with some depth OF’s I gotta say they made improvements and should be serious contenders
I think where they are now is a 4 win improvement from last year. Not counting the guys we picked up at the deadline Littell and andujar but I will include Hayes since we have him going forward. 87 wins. I feel like even after losing Martinez the rotation will be as good with burns still learning and basically everyone else the same as last year. Bullpen should be at least as good and probably one more win. 8th & 9th inning guys the same and any drop off pagan might have a year older Phillips should add being a year older in earlier innings. We improved left handed pen with Ferguson and probably right handed middle innings as well. Then assume Suarez gets the at bats that Candelario and then hays got last year that should improve 2 wins. Even though position difference Bledey vs espinal at bats is a plus 1 win. Finally the difference in losing lux & part year of fraley & Marte vs a full year of Hayes bat & Marte full year probably washes. If McLain bounces back to somewhere between 2023 & 2025 and Stewart proves out could do another 2 wins so 89.
What a great sign for Cincy. And for only one year at that. Would’ve loved to have seen him in the old English D this year but our dumpster fire of a front office and ownership are incompetent. We’ll be just good enough to put butts in the seats , keep Skubal, and then lose him for a draft pick!
Elly has protection now, Stewart will hopefully play every day and the pitching corps is the best it’s been in a long time. Let’s go to Arizona and get started.
He was the best available free agent bat left and we got him at a bargain. My wife is a fan and we have a Saturday ticket package and Suarez was her favorite player other than votto when Suarez was here so she is happy. I think he makes us 2 wins better than what we got out of Candelario and then hays last year. I also think we should have acquainted him rather than Hayes at the deadline last year.
Here is my question though since you mention protection for EDLC. Like most switch hitters EDLC hits better when he bats left handed. I don’t know but I am guessing since a right handed batter Suarez splits are better against left handed pitching. When facing a right handed pitcher (about 2/3 of all at bats) would a right handed power hitter batting 4th provide more protection for the switch hitters EDLC batting his best side left handed hitting 3rd, or would a left handed cleanup guy give more protection to the swith hitting guy in front of him?
I seriously don’t know how baseball people look at it but I felt like we needed a 30 home run left handed cleanup bat more than a 40 home run right handed one especially with all our other average or above right handed hitters. Either way we are better and a great deal, good guy and we will be very good against left handed pitching.
How in the world did the Red Sox pass on this? Some of please explain.
The Red Sox prefer strong defense behind their wonderful pitching staff they’ve invested in.
Am I the only one who cringes when reading “the cold corner?” Never heard it used before anywhere else in almost 50 years. Sounds dumb to me.
Yankees could’ve gobbled up Arraez and Suarez for the same price as the 2 years they are paying for McMahon. Oh well.
I like the move for the Reds given their potential but uncertainty at 1b/3b/DH. It will keep a lot of younger players on their toes and he can fill a void at all of the above spots if needed.
Well, at least 1 Ohio owner finally found his checkbook.
Ke is what he is.
If you expected him to be a good hitter that is on you.
Anyone who knows baseball though knows that he is absolutely a wizard at third base.
Sac- Actually it would depend on when you make the errors. If Elly makes an error and lets a run score in the last game of the year the Reds are out of the playoffs. So yes, 5 less errors a year could win a title, OR lose one.
I think that the projected three year $63 contract was what Suarez and his agent were expecting or at least hoping for.
Anyone who thinks that he can easily transition to first basemen is in for a surprise.
Suarez signed. Donovan about to go to Seattle. The walls are starting to close in on Cherington
@OldTimer, what are you talking about? Cherington has done better than normal this winter. After trading for Lowe, signing O’Hearn, not trading away any of their starting pitching depth, not signing any has been to block Griffin, a full year of health for Horwitz…I would say the Pirates will be fine with Trolio and his gold glove at 3B. Excited to see Gruffin this year & Im not a Pirates fan.
Agree, Scamp, 100%
Two nice additions and a promising kid from the Red Sox
Just wish they had one more banger in the lineup
In Tito We Trust.
Meanwhile in the office of Angel GM Perry Minisian….
Perry-Hey Arte thanks for returning my call
Arte-Sure what’s up?
Perry-We have a chance to sign third baseman Eugenio Suarez. He played for Seattle last season. He would be a great addition for our club.
Arte- How much does he want?
Perry-His agent said he would take $14M…..he really wants to play for us.
Arte-Hard pass. I’m already paying Rendon a ton of money not to play, Since I got you on the phone. On the way in to the ballpark can you stop by Liqour Locker on Katella. I put in an order. See if you can find someone who really wants to play for us for about $1M. I’ll throw in some free pass’s to Disneyland. Can’t wait to get to Tempe and Ron Washington.
Perry- we fired him
Arte- We did?
Perry/- You did
Arte- oh
When it comes to the Reds anemic offense, I’m not sure whether the Suarez signing is the cure- or just a very effective placebo. Nevertheless, Cincy has gotten a lot of that $15MM in fan jubilation and favorable press.
They’re planning on having Marte in RF. Hayes plays 3B and Suarez will DH.
