When we last saw Max Scherzer, he was walking off the mound in Game 7 of the World Series. The future Hall of Famer had held the Dodgers to one run on four hits across 4 1/3 innings and left the game holding a 3-1 lead. It may not have been a vintage performance, but the three-time Cy Young winner did his job. The bullpen just didn’t hold the lead.
While Scherzer ended the year on a high note, his lone season in Toronto was a frustrating one. The nerve issue that has led to soreness in his thumb over the past few seasons returned early in 2025. He landed on the injured list after his first start and was sidelined into late June. Scherzer was healthy enough after that but didn’t have a great season. He only managed six quality starts among his 17 appearances. His 5.19 earned run average over 85 innings was the highest of his career.
Scherzer’s strikeout and walk rates remain solid. He punched out 23% of opponents while walking around 6% for the second consecutive season. Both marks are a little better than the respective league averages for a starter. The issue is the damage hitters have done when they make contact. Scherzer allowed more than two home runs per nine innings for the first time in his career. It was the fourth-highest homer rate in MLB among pitchers who threw 70+ innings.
As the stuff has backed up with age and the injuries, Scherzer had a tougher time getting opponents to go after pitches outside the strike zone. He had to challenge them in the heart of the plate more often to compensate, and he’s doing so without the overpowering arsenal he had in his prime. That’s going to lead to some home run trouble.
All that said, Scherzer still attacks the strike zone with a four-pitch mix. His four-seam fastball averaged 93.6 mph last season, well below peak but a tick above where it sat when he posted a 3.95 ERA over eight starts for the Rangers in 2024. He finished the year healthy, would bring a wealth of experience to younger members of a pitching staff, and has a 3.78 ERA over 33 career playoff appearances. There’s still a role for Scherzer in an MLB rotation somewhere.
The 41-year-old has already said he’s not retiring. He hasn’t fully committed to signing before Opening Day, however. In late January, Scherzer told Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic that while he’s open to signing at any time, he was willing to wait into the regular season to sign with one of the teams he prefers. It seems safe to assume he’s going to pick a team he views as a legitimate World Series contender.
Where might Scherzer end up? A return to the Blue Jays could make sense with Shane Bieber opening the season on the injured list. Toronto still has a five-man rotation of Dylan Cease, Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, José Berríos and Cody Ponce with Eric Lauer around in long relief. Adding to the rotation isn’t a necessity, but bringing Scherzer back would allow them to use a six-man rotation to monitor Yesavage’s workload in the early going.
The Braves entered the spring with lackluster rotation depth and have been hit with injuries to Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep since camp got underway. The Phillies will be without Zack Wheeler to begin the year and are likely counting on both Taijuan Walker and prospect Andrew Painter for season-opening roles.
The Twins are probably losing Pablo López for the season; are they competitive enough for Scherzer to consider signing there? Texas has Kumar Rocker and Jacob Latz competing for the fifth starter role, but Scherzer’s probably out of the price range. The Yankees are awaiting the returns of Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole. Projected fourth and fifth starters Ryan Weathers and Luis Gil have minor league options remaining and concerning injury histories.

A JV and Mad Max reunion in Motown would be neat
Blah – I said that a week ago! Porcello is only 37, maybe he would join them?
Anibal Sanchez cant be too much older than JV, David Price and Doug Fister could do what Philip Rivers did!
Anibel Sanchez is actually a year and a week younger than Justin Verlander. And both are slightly older than I am, so yeah, I would love to see an Anibel Sanchez comeback. Scherzer is a few months younger than men. I want more MLB players older than I am.
If Denny McLain is out of jail he can still throw games!
I just picked the Cubs because I know they won’t. Just wanted to skew the results.
In more ways than one!
I heard Jack Morris was free!
“That one is dead,”
“Then scratch him off.”
Bring back Armando Galarraga! Give him a chance at his perfect game again.
Mlb should of given that kid the perfecto after jim Joyce came out and said after the game that he messed up and blew the call.
Hope it could go better for them than it did in 2023 with the Mets.
Anyone thinking Scherzer has any chance of coming back to Detroit has no clue about the history and lasting animosity between him and the ownership. It’ll never happen…
You’re right, I don’t. What happened?
Said that having a bar conversation with a buddy a few weeks ago that it would be cool if Detroit got the band back together, and that was even before they signed Verlander! One last ride for one of the best 1-2 punches we’ll ever see, I’m so here for it!
Where would Detroit put him? There’s no room in their rotation.
Injuries happen, starting pitching logjams tend to have a way of working themselves out most of the time. You can really never have too many in this day and age.
Max isn’t coming back for months, and there are a few guys with bad histories on that staff. There will probably be innings to be had.
If Scherzer isn’t picked up early in the Season by a contender—- it’d be Great for the Cardinals to sign him on a one year contract to start and work with their young pitchers until the Trading Deadline. At that point, trade him to a contender so he could pitch in the Play-Offs!!
Of contending teams the Braves have the biggest need and have shown a willingness to sign the elder statesman starting pitchers
Unless we get 2 more pitchers injured, the Braves won’t sign Max
Be careful. You just lost 2
That may happen before opening day
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Scherzer wait until closer to midseason to sign, at which point he will sign with a contender. This will rule the Braves out at that point even if they wanted to sign him.
I voted the Yankees on the poll
Again, the poll link in the app does not work. I will vote on the website…..
Rookies manning the site tonight.
Fwiw, I ended up deleting the app. Proved itself worthless, imo. I just keep a web tab open…
It didn’t work on the mobile web version either, only the “regular” website
The Kia Tigers
Japan I can’t go to Japan
I think the Sorento’s are a better fit.
Good thing they play in South Korea.
AI is still learning…
Surprisingly little news of the Vitello-Scherzer connection in San Francisco.
Angels
As a Jays’ fan, I was really disappointed his last effort didn’t result in a win. Max’s greatest attribute is his competitive spirit in big games and he reminded us of that then.
His best landing spot would be one of the teams that are contenders …most of whom don’t want, or need, what he brings the other 80% of the time.
Stay in shape, then try to convince someone to give him a contract in time to make a post-season roster …might be the only way he gets another chance.
He will sign with whatever dumb team is ready to overpay pay 10-15M
Dumb indeed to give $10m-plus to a 41-year old who pitched 128 innings in 2024-2025 combined, coming off a 5.19 ERA and a 4.99 FIP in 2025.
If his name wasn’t !!!Max!!! !!!Scherzer!!!, what would he be in line for… $2m in an era where Jose Quintana could only get $4.25m during ST, 2025?
His projections from Zips and FGDC are surprisingly good, ERA around 4.50 in 100 IP (which seems wildly unlikely). I’d bet he’ll be able to sign somewhere, even with a contender, if he benches his ego and his price drops. to something reasonable, given where he is.
He needs to sign with the Royals so the Tigers and Verlander can beat on them a few times…
How about none of the above?
Monty Brewster approves this!
Scherzer is past his prime. I doubt any contending team would sign him. If he gets more than a 1yr/$10 million contract, I will be surprised.
I will jokingly say that if Moreno didn’t have financial flacidity, this would be a typical Angels signing for a 1 yr/$22 million contract
Past his prime doesn’t mean completely useless. At his age I wouldn’t be expecting more than 100 IP max, but if he can give you just a couple vintage Scherzer performances and provide mentorship to younger pitchers, that’s still a worthwhile signing for plenty of teams.
Based solely on the pattern this off-season, I don’t think the Jays will re-sign him. With the exception of Bieber, all free agents have signed elsewhere or remain unsigned.
Dodgers, but there will be deferrals
Nothing wrong with that at all
Dodgers to play the Kershaw/6th starter role. Or maybe not to be deployed until the second half. I don’t think he will go to a team that has an actual hole in their rotation. You don’t want to have to depend on him, but he’s a nice luxury to have around.
Whichever contender has the worst injury this spring. Scherzer is out there in the shadows waiting for UCL’s to pop.
team retirement should be the front runner
Wherever he ends up, I’d like to see him come back as a reliever. He’s not going to be THE Max Scherzer as a starter again but he probably could be quite effective as a reliever if only for a year. Regardless, it was super cool seeing him as a Jay last year. He was a real trooper there at the end.
Pitchers with his resume will not retire as a reliever unless it’s in the playoffs with short rest after a start.
This.
Been saying this guy would make a hell of a closer with his intensity in the 9th.
Except his 1st inning was by far his worst last year. Not sure that’s what you want to see that from a closer.
Completely irrelevant response. Would last years first inning version of Max Scherzer be an effective closer? Or course not. He was a 40 year old starting pitcher preparing to go 5+ innings each start. My comment was about his intensity and bulldog approach. If he accepted a closers role this guy would come flying in from the bullpen like a mad man and throw everything he had in the 9th. I pity the fools that would have to face him. He would probably be warming up in the 7th inning screaming at the bullpen coach/catcher/fans/ and himself hoping his team kept it close so he could get in and get a save. Also, it would probably be the end of Max Scherzer rather quickly as I expect his arm would literally fall off. But thanks for the comment so I could explain what I meant.
The Ducks… of Anaheim.
Wish I could see pole results without voting, guess I’ll have to make an uneducated decision.
A post apocalyptic group of motorhead nut jobs from Down Under would be fun.
Seeing where the Cardinals and Rockies are in the voting ranks, I assume some people are joke-voting, or are in some very serious denial…
Isn’t he from St. Louis? I could see a last hurrah long shot there… but neither club qualifies as a contender.
Max is too much of a competitor to go to a team with no chance at the playoffs, especially at this stage of his career. He’ll only sign with a second division team if he can’t get anything else.
Cardinals on a one year contract to pitch and work with their young pitchers. Then… At the Trading Deadline… trade him to a contender of his choice (if possible) to pitch in the Playoffs!!!
I actually wouldn’t mind seeing the Braves sign him. Even if he only goes three months, that might be enough to bridge to Schwellenbach and/or Waldrep. Maybe he takes a break from June to September and comes back for the playoffs.
Please dont let it be the Angels or any team in the NL West.
Still think at this point of his career, he could be a dominant closer
@jfive Think of it. All he needs is a new arm, a real fastball, an out pitch…
My guess is he’ll sign in a few months so that he’ll be fresh enough for the postseason.
Hopefully no where. He’s destined to be a Union whiner.
Won’t someone think of the poor billionaires…
@bertod
LOL The poor SOB’s are using domestic sparkling wines instead of champagne for their enemas!! Oh the humanity ☹️☹️
I hate it when I have to use a cheap Italian prosecco instead of my usual Vueve Cliquot. The pain is real.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Any team looking to enhance an already simmering toxic clubhouse environment and wants to reach new levels of tension and distrust will beat a path to his doorstep.
His hometown Cardinals could be an option. He was lobbying for the Cardinals to reach out back before signing the Nats deal and they didn’t bite. They could use the innings and have nothing to lose. He hasn’t really been advertised as a mentor type but they could use someone with his experience in the clubhouse if he would warm to that idea coming in. If he does well he could jump to a contender later on.
Based on what I saw last year he is mostly done. He can still get up to 94 mph but his barrel % went way up. He wants to pitch so bad and who can blame him. The question is should he. He should just sit out the first few months and sign with a team in july as he doesn’t want to pitch more then 100 innings anyway. He just wants to be on the mound in the playoffs.
I don’t think anyone he would want to play for will be signing him for what he wants. He may go unsigned.
I guessed the Yankees. They like old guys, and seem to have an injury prone pitching staff.
Can you run the poll again with the top 5 vote getters and other as the choices please?
In terms of likeliness, Atlanta (my team) and San Francisco (how I voted) seem like good picks. Both teams figure to be competitive this year (for wild card spots most likely), and he has said that’s important to him. They also have a need for starters.
But… I was this close to picking Milwaukee for similar reasons, and they also have young guys they’d probably like to rest. They seem to know how to get something extra out of pitchers. It would be such a fun landing spot, but I doubt they want to stretch the payroll further.
I’m feeling Mexican or Korean League for him.
Zero percent chance Mad Max goes international. He’d sooner hang up the spikes than do all that after a HOF career…
You are correct. Scherzer is a stubborn man. Hall of Fame career definitely deserves to get him a good contract, but sadly he’s in the twilight of his career, so he won’t be earning as much on a 1 year deal with his new team.
Still has 3 years left of deferred Nationals money though!
I mean, he can find a contract, and I don’t know Max but would he be willing to take a 1y/$3MM to be a 4/5 on my Pads? He may just have to temper financial expectations at this point of said HOF career…
He was my favorite player for 7 years on my Nats, so I would absolutely love it if he returned for a season, maybe to shape up the organization again.
That being said, I doubt Scherzer would play for a manager who is 8 years younger than him.
Guards, because Darragh predicted it and I want it to happen
With the question marks the Phillies rotation is presenting, especially out of the gate, I wouldn’t be against the team picking him up. If you get 80-100 serviceable innings in the first half until we know what Wheeler will be able to offer and whether Painter is ready for prime time..debatable based on his history post surgery, it would be worth a consideration at the least.
My guess is Scherzer will have surprisingly good outings and 2 inning stinkers…kind of what I expect from Nola this year….so why not…he could only help the Phillies at this point to spread starts for the back end of the rotation and provide insurance for the inevitable injuries to this suddenly sketchy staff…he’d fit right in in that regard..
I voted for the Yankees. They like old vetrans and they’ve got the money.
That will be the AARP Phillies signing this year. Give it a week or 2.
I applaud and admire anyone who voted for the Rockies.
Ask Sabean.
Take on a real challenge and come to Coors! Perform well on a 1 year deal and get traded to a contender. Everybody wins!
Sign anywhere for league minimum maybe. Definitely worth 20 mil a year at that age. Do care who they are. Pay them for what they will do, not for what they use to do. His time in texas was pathetic
