Here are a few items to track to begin the week…
1. Ohtani’s 51-game on-base streak
An RBI double in the third inning of Sunday’s game against the Rockies pushed Shohei Ohtani‘s on-base streak to 51 games. He now sits alone in third place in Dodgers’ history (since 1900). Shawn Green is next on the list at 53 games. Ohtani will need another week of reaching base safely to catch Duke Snider, who compiled a 58-game on-base streak in 1954. The Dodgers face left-hander Jose Quintana in the final game of the series tonight. Left-on-left matchups have been no issue for Ohtani. He has a .998 OPS in 27 plate appearances against southpaws this season.
2. Miller nearing Padres’ record
Flamethrower Mason Miller locked down his eighth save on Sunday against the Angels. The right-hander retired the side in order, pushing his scoreless innings streak to 32 2/3 innings. Miller is now one clean frame away from Cla Meredith‘s franchise record. He’s permitted just two hits and two walks this season. Of the 34 outs Miller has recorded, 27 have come via strikeout. Miller was last scored upon on August 5. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. turned around a 103 mph fastball for a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning. Miller was saddled with a blown save, but the Padres ultimately won in 11 innings. San Diego opens a three-game set against Colorado on Tuesday.
3. Waldichuk visiting specialist
Left-hander Ken Waldichuk is getting a second opinion on his injured forearm today, reports Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic. The initial recommendation for the lefty was Tommy John surgery. Waldichuk missed the 2024 season while recovering from TJ and did not reach the majors last year. He made his long-awaited big-league return in Washington’s second game of the season. Ian Happ rudely welcomed him back with a three-run homer on his first pitch. Waldichuk left an April 12 matchup against the Brewers in the middle of a Brice Turang at-bat. He hit the 15-day IL shortly after, and soon moved to the 60-day IL.

Done!
So far it has been a ton of fun. Thanks Salzilla for putting the league together.
Nice to know!
Franchise records aren’t that impressive unless it’s a team like the Yankees. Both the Dodgers and Padres have had some seriously awful teams in their past and many years of futility.
The all time scoreless innings records is 59. Also the franchise record for the Dodgers
So who would be a team like the Yankees? Either there isn’t one or Dodgers with the 3rd best winning percentage all time is one. Dodgers are one of the most storied franchises in baseball, lumping them in with the Padres is silly. Now the Padres with the 3rd worse winning percentage of all time could be another story.
Touché!
Dodgers are storied while the Yankees are steroid. So there is a difference.
OK, based on your logic we should only use the Yankees record. Per a little research:
“The longest consecutive scoreless innings streak for a New York Yankees pitcher is 37 innings, set in 1908. In the modern era, Whitey Ford holds the club record with a 33 2/3 inning scoreless streak spanning the 1960–1962 World Series.”
When he passes either of those (currently at 32 2/3) are we allowed to acknowledge it?
Yes
Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford admitted to cheating late in his career, primarily by doctoring baseballs to gain an edge. He confessed to using his wedding ring to cut the ball, using mud to “load” it, and applying a “gunk” mixture of baby oil, turpentine, and resin to make the ball move more.
Joe DiMaggio 56 game hit streak is the most overrated record in history. Big whoop you get a hit when your team wins or loses by a ton of runs.
hayzee – It’s harder to hit in 56 straight than it is to hit .400 in a season.
One thing more amazing about his streak, he didn’t miss any games.
I didn’t even know until a few years ago that a “hit streak” continues even if you sit for one or more games. That is so wrong!!!
Agree all around!
Why should a hit streak end just because a manager gives the player a day off? I guess by that logic Mason Miller’s scoreless streak should end the first day he doesn’t pitch in a game.
Hank – Come on, you know better.
Let’s say Roman has a 44-game hitting streak heading into this Tigers series. Skubal scheduled to pitch Saturday. Roman takes Saturday off.
Then Roman plays yesterday, today, and tomorrow – getting a hit in each game.
Fried is scheduled to pitch Wednesday. Roman takes Wednesday off.
Is that truly a legit hitting streak when the hitter sits against the toughest starting pitchers, just to keep the streak going?
Of course not.
Who cares what the score was when he extended his streak? Nobody but you.
They were 41-13 during the streak (two ties)….doesn’t take took much of a genius to guess at least a couple of the hits helped during the wins.
Do geniuses use take took often?
Perfect slider—–you helped prove my point. It doesn’t take a genius. Guilty as charged!!
DiMaggio — a child of the Depression, the eighth of nine born to Italian immigrants — was raised in San Francisco. His first marriage — to Dorothy Arnold, a bit player in films — was a disaster. She thought she was getting an icon of American decency. Instead, her new husband drank and chain-smoked and cheated constantly.
The duke of flatbush
debuted same yr as teammate jackie robinson 1947
Won a WS in brooklyn 1955
Then in LA in 59
Hall of famer
Only one of the great nicknames in the history of baseball. Too bad I only got to see him toward the end of his career!
Miller is simply unreal right now. Hitters are so geared up for his fastball that he can drop in sliders at will.
even when they know the slider is coming they can’t hit it.
He’s on a heater!
Babe Ruth 659 HR is a franchise record.
Evan Longoria 261 HR is a franchise record
Evan would be 10th as a Yankee with one more than Jeter
Same?
Miller has not allowed a run since August 5th of last year in his 2nd game after being traded to the Padres.
Cla Meredith’s rookie season with Padres was same season Trevor Hoffman nearly won the NL Cy Young. I think if we redid the vote the two years Hoffman came in second, he might very well have won it that season. Cla also should’ve gotten consideration for some ROY votes, if we redid it.
