Mariners Re-Sign Robert Andino

By Mike Axisa | November 30, 2012 at 11:14pm CDT

The Mariners have re-signed Robert Andino to a one-year contract, the team announced. The infielder was non-tendered earlier tonight.

Andino, 29, hit .211/.283/.305 in 431 plate appearances for the Orioles this season. He was acquired from Baltimore less than two weeks ago. Matt Swartz projected a $1.8MM salary through arbitration, so his new deal is likely worth less than that. Andino is a Legacy Sports Group client.

Giants Non-Tender Brian Wilson

By Mike Axisa | November 30, 2012 at 11:00pm CDT

The Giants have non-tendered Brian Wilson according to Hank Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). Earlier this week we heard the team was likely to cut ties with their former closer.

Uspw_6190296Wilson, 30, has saved 171 games for San Francisco throughout the years. He only appeared in two games this season before blowing out his elbow and requiring Tommy John surgery. Wilson earned $8.5MM this year and was arbitration-eligible for the fourth time as a Super Two. Matt Swartz projected him to earn the same salary again next year.

Although re-signing with the Giants remain possible, recent speculation indicated Wilson could also have interest in pitching for the Dodgers or Red Sox. He makes his offseason home in Los Angeles and grew up in New Hampshire rooting for the Sox. If Ryan Madson's contract is any indication, Wilson is looking at a one-year, low-base salary, incentive-laden contract for next year.

Giants Rumors: Posey, Pence, Casilla, Wilson

By Mike Axisa | November 30, 2012 at 10:21pm CDT

Here's the latest on the World Champion San Francisco Giants…

  • "We are open to the idea," said GM Brian Sabean when asked about a long-term contract extension for Buster Posey, though he said they were "not necessarily" open to the idea with Hunter Pence. John Shea of The San Francisco Chronicle and Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com passed along the quotes (Twitter links).
  • The Giants have had conceptual talks about a multiyear deal with reliever Santiago Casilla, reports Baggarly (on Twitter). The team is not active in any trade discussions, Sabean confirmed.
  • Brian Wilson is unlikely to re-sign with the Giants if and when he gets non-tendered, hears Hank Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter).

Phillies Pursuing Angel Pagan

By Mike Axisa | November 30, 2012 at 9:46pm CDT

After losing out on B.J. Upton, the Phillies are now pursuing Angel Pagan according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Two teams, believed to be the Phillies and Giants, have offered the outfielder a four-year deal.

Pagan, 31, hit .288/.338/.440 with 29 steals and a league-leading 15 triples in 659 plate appearances for San Francisco this year. Rosenthal says the Phillies offered Upton five years and $55MM, but they're concerned about Michael Bourn's price tag. Signing Pagan to a four-year pact would leave them extra cash for third base and the pitching staff.

By Mike Axisa | November 30, 2012 at 9:28pm CDT

The Nationals have non-tendered John Lannan, reports Bill Ladson of MLB.com (on Twitter). The left-hander was projected to earn $5MM during his third trip through arbitration this winter according to Matt Swartz.

Lannan, 28, made only six starts for Washington this year. He pitched to a 4.13 ERA with 4.7 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 32 2/3 innings while spending most of the season in Triple-A despite a hefty $5MM salary. Lannan posted a 4.30 ERA with 5.2 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 while in the minors.

Athletics Designate Sandy Rosario For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | November 30, 2012 at 8:51pm CDT

The Athletics have designated Sandy Rosario for assignment, the team announced. The move creates room on the roster for the recently acquired Chris Resop.

Rosario, 27, was acquired from the Red Sox earlier this week. He pitched in four games for this year's Marlins team, but spent most of the season in the minor leagues. He posted a 1.99 ERA with 8.2 K/9 and 1.4 BB/9 in 31 2/3 total innings for three of Miami's affiliates.

Orioles Non-Tender Mark Reynolds

By Mike Axisa | November 30, 2012 at 8:41pm CDT

Uspw_6648056

The Orioles have non-tendered Mark Reynolds, reports MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli (Twitter links). He was never offered a new deal after the team declined his $11MM option last month.

"It is what it is and move on. I'm excited to get out there and see what’s out there for me," said Reynolds to Ghiroli (Twitter link).

Reynolds started the 2012 season slowly, but hit 15 home runs after August 1st, finishing with 23 homers and a .221/.335/.429 batting line. The 29-year-old struck out 159 times, but didn't lead the league in strikeouts for the first time since 2007.

The Orioles paid Reynolds a $500K buyout by declining the option, though he remained under team control as an arbitration-eligible player. Matt Swartz projected the slugger to earn $8.9MM through arbitration thanks to his gaudy power numbers.

Fujikawa Nearing Decision, Angels Front-Runners

By Mike Axisa | November 30, 2012 at 8:08pm CDT

Japanese free agent Kyuji Fujikawa is nearing a decision according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports (on Twitter). Brown hears the Angels are the front-runners.

Fujikawa, 32, has only posted an ERA higher than 1.63 once since 2007. Over the past six seasons with the Hanshin Tigers, he has 202 saves to go along with an eye-popping 1.36 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 12.4 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 369 2/3 innings. In that time, the right-hander has allowed just 18 home runs. At least ten teams have made Fujikawa an offer.

Diamondbacks Have Interest In McCarthy, Huff

By Mike Axisa | November 30, 2012 at 7:49pm CDT

7:49pm: The Diamondbacks have also "made contact" with Aubrey Huff, reports Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com (on Twitter). The 35-year-old Huff hit .192/.326/.282 in 95 plate appearances for the Giants while missing lots of time with knee with knee problems.

7:27pm: The Diamondbacks have expressed interest in Brandon McCarthy, reports Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic (on Twitter). Piecoro notes the D'Backs pursued the right-hander two years ago.

McCarthy, 29, pitched to a 3.24 ERA with 5.9 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 in 111 innings for the Athletics this year. He missed time with shoulder surgery as well as a head injury after getting hit by a line drive. The D'Backs are said to be seeking a veteran starter to add to Ian Kennedy, Wade Miley, and Trevor Cahill. Patrick Corbin, Tyler Skaggs, Josh Collmenter, and Trevor Bauer could also be in the rotation mix as Daniel Hudson rehabs from Tommy John surgery.
