Ozzie Guillen Links

By Tim Dierkes | September 27, 2011 at 1:32pm CDT

New Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen tweeted today that it's "weird to be in Miami," but he's very happy and ready to go.  Today's Ozzie-related links…

  • Guillen's contract with the Marlins is expected to run through 2015, according to ESPNChicago's Bruce Levine.  In that same article, Jayson Stark explains how Ozzie's farewell blog post last night was erroneously published at MLB.com.
  • Guillen didn't give it his all in 2011, explains Jim Margalus of South Side Sox, becoming disengaged with setting his lineups.
  • Ozzie is worth the risk for Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, writes Yahoo's Jeff Passan.
  • The parting of ways "needed to be done on both sides," White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko told Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.
  • Many of the Sox's number crunchers avoided the dugout during batting practice due to Guillen's dislike of sabermetrics, notes Gonzales.
  • The Marlins "immediately become far more exciting" by landing Guillen, writes Scott Miller of CBS Sports.

Guillen hating advanced stats makes a tremendous amount of sense.

This has been pretty widely known in Chicago since Ozzie took over.  I tried, but I couldn’t find the rant he went on after Sabremetrics Night at US Cellular was announced, lol.

Guillen was a true White Sox – Williams should have gone. Worst GM in baseball

Guillen reflects on 1,000 games as manager

…I asked Guillen if he thought he would quit or be fired when the time comes for him to leave the job.

“Fired,” Guillen said. “Because I’m not going to quit. I’m not a quitter. When I want to quit I’ll make sure I do a lot of stupid things to make them fire me and get paid.” END

Tweeting Ozzie just wants to have fun

……  Guillen said if tweeting becomes a problem for Williams or White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf he would consider stopping. But if he could figure out a way to make money off it, then the discussion might be more difficult.

“If I was making money out of this then we’d fight,” Guillen said. “If I was making money out of this, I don’t care who told me, Jerry, Kenny, my mom, my dad, I would tell them to [forget] themselves. I just want to have fun, but if there was money involved I’m pretty sure I would get fired because I would fight for it.”  END

Ozzie constantly claims that his love for his family, the White Sox, and Jerry Reinsdorf in particular are foremost in his life.  But then he rationalizes that the pursuit of money allows him to potentially throw games and curse out his parents.

This clown has made about $23M from baseball and for the sake of a few more bucks he spouts this nonsense !

How would you feel if your kid cursed you out in a public forum ?

If he’s “a true White Sox” I imagine you would do nothing.

Tim, you need to read Jeff Passan’s article more closely. While he begins by saying that Ozzie can be a talented manager, his ultimate conclusion is that Loria and Ozzie will NOT get along, to the likely detriment of the team and the team’s media relations. The final sentence of the article: “Just more fodder for The Adventures of Ozzie and Jeffrey, coming to baseball diamonds this spring and divorce court soon thereafter.”
