Outrighted: Quiroz, Bochy, Axford, Gomez, d’Arnaud, Richardson, Elmore

By Jeff Todd | November 3, 2014 at 8:57pm CDT

According to the International League and Pacific Coast League transactions pages, the following outrights and related minor moves took place today:

  • The Giants have outrighted catcher Guillermo Quiroz and righty Brett Bochy. Quiroz, 32, saw just three MLB plate appearances this year and has only once made more than 100 trips to the plate in a single season despite seeing action in ten MLB campaigns. Bochy, son of manager Bruce, got his first taste of the bigs this year, allowing two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.
  • After designating them for assignment recently, the Pirates have outrighted relievers John Axford and Jeanmar Gomez. Axford, 31, will look for a chance to bounce back after posting three seasons and 189 innings of 4.24 ERA work from the pen. Gomez, meanwhile, tossed 62 frames of 3.19 ERA ball after a solid 2013, but his peripherals do not quite back up the results.
  • Pittsburgh also outrighted utility infielder Chase d’Arnaud. The 27-year-old has fairly minimal MLB action, but owns a .251/.316/.370 line over 1,426 Triple-A plate appearances over parts of four seasons. He has spent his entire career in the Pirates organization.
  • The Yankees have outrighted outfielder Antoan Richardson after he racked up five stolen bases over the course of just 13 games (and 17 plate appearances) in New York. Richardson, 31, has been a consistent high-OBP and speed threat in the upper minors, but has yet to receive a real opportunity at the big league level.
  • Also outrighted was utilitman Jake Elmore of the Reds. Cincinnati claimed Elmore from the Athletics in early August. He ultimately saw just 12 plate appearances with the Reds, and is still looking for his first consistent MLB role at age 27.
  • Previously outrighted players Adam Moore of the Padres, Scott Elbert of the Dodgers, Matt McBride of the Rockies, and Evan Reed and Don Kelly of the Tigers have all elected free agency.

Padres Designate Stults, Roach; Lose Jackson To Dodgers On Waivers

By Steve Adams | November 3, 2014 at 5:59pm CDT

The Padres announced today that they have designated left-hander Eric Stults and right-hander Donn Roach for assignment, adding that catcher Adam Moore has been outrighted off the 40-man roster. Additionally, infielder Ryan Jackson has been claimed off waivers by the Dodgers.

The moves make room for the reinstatement of right-hander Casey Kelly, left-hander Cory Luebke, first baseman Yonder Alonso and outfielder Carlos Quentin from the 60-day disabled list.

Stults, who is nearing his 35th birthday, threw 176 innings of 4.30 ERA ball last season, tallying 5.7 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9. Those numbers represent a downtick from his work over 2012-13, when Stults carried a 3.60 ERA across 302 2/3 innings. The major difference in his year-over-year results comes in the form of an increasing rate of home runs allowed. ERA estimators have generally viewed him in much the same light: as a below-average starting pitcher. Stults had been projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $4.6MM through arbitration, so the move is not terribly surprising.

Roach, meanwhile, made his MLB debut this year at age 24. He posted a 4.75 ERA in 30 1/3 frames while posting an unappetizing 5.0 K/9 against 4.5 BB/9. His numbers at Triple-A were no more promising, but Roach has had success in the lower minor league levels.

As for Moore, the 30-year-old backstop has seen action in parts of six MLB seasons but has only taken more than 24 plate appearances in one of them (back in 2010 with the Mariners). Once a well-regarded prospect, Moore has a .200/.241/.309 line over 283 trips to the plate in the majors. He did, however, have an excellent campaign at Triple-A this year, slashing .305/.367/.506 and swatting 13 long balls over 354 plate appearances.

The 26-year-old Jackson will present a utility infield option for his new club. He has scant major league experience, but owns a .274/.344/.369 slash in over 1,000 plate appearances at the Triple-A level and comes with a good defensive reputation at short. Jackson missed most of 2014 after undergoing wrist surgery.

Minor Moves: Moore, Sosa, Schwinden, Liddi

By Steve Adams | May 15, 2014 at 6:42pm CDT

Catcher Adam Moore, who had a May 15 opt-out date in his current minor league deal with the Padres, has elected to remain with the team’s Triple-A affiliate in El Paso, reports Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune (Twitter link). Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish adds that Moore and the Padres have agreed to a rolling opt-out date, in which Moore is free to opt out at any time should a big league opportunity present itself (Twitter link). The former top prospect is hitting .357/.410/.527 with four homers in 122 PA this season. Here are some more minor moves from around the league…

  • Former big league right-hander Henry Sosa has signed with the Nexen Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization, according to a report from Korean media outlet Yonhap (hat tip: Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net). The 28-year-old Sosa posted a 5.23 ERA in 51 1/3 innings with the Astros’ bullpen in 2011, averaging 6.4 strikeouts and 3.9 walks per nine innings pitched. Sosa, who had been with the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate, has pitched for KBO’s Kia Tigers previously.
  • Right-hander Chris Schwinden has inked a minor league deal with the Rangers, reports Mike Ashmore of the Trentonian (Twitter link). Schwinden, who appeared in seven games (six starts) for the 2011-12 Mets, was pitching for the Atlantic League’s Lancaster Barnstormers, where he’d notched a 1.96 ERA with a 13-to-2 K/BB ratio in 23 innings.
  • Cotillo also reports (via Twitter) that the Dodgers have signed corner infielder Alex Liddi to a minor league deal. Liddi, who was recently released by the White Sox, will head to the team’s Triple-A affiliate. He’s a career .252/.314/.450 hitter in 1501 Triple-A plate appearances and has also seen big league action in parts of three seasons with the Mariners.

Minor Moves: Oeltjen, Laffey, Cassevah, Wolf, Hill

By Jeff Todd | March 25, 2014 at 10:25pm CDT

We'll keep tabs on the day's minor moves here:

  • Outfielder Trent Oeltjen tweets (via Rotoworld) that he has signed with the Diamondbacks. Oeltjen, 31, has not appeared in the big leagues since 2011 with the Dodgers, but he has hit well at the Triple-A level, putting up a line of .255/.345/.483 for the Angels' Triple-A Salt Lake affiliate last season.
  • The Orioles have released lefty Aaron Laffey, MASNsports.com's Steve Melewski tweets. Laffey pitched just 12 2/3 innings in the big leagues in 2013, spending most of it struggling at Triple-A, but he pitched 100 2/3 innings for the Blue Jays in 2012.
  • The Rockies have released pitcher Bobby Cassevah, MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo tweets. Cassevah, who accumulated a 3.20 ERA with 4.7 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 from 2010-2012 in the Angels bullpen, is currently rehabbing an injury.
  • Veteran lefty Randy Wolf has requested, and received, his release from the Mariners, MLB.com's Greg Johns tweets. Wolf was attempting a comeback after missing the entire 2013 season. He last appeared in the big leagues in 2012, when he pitched for the Brewers and Orioles. The Mariners told Wolf he had made the team, but he did not want to sign a 45-day advance consent release, Johns notes.
  • The Blue Jays have signed pitcher Shawn Hill from the York Revolution of the Atlantic League, MLive.com's Chris Iott tweets. Hill, 32, last appeared in the big leagues in 2012 with the Jays. He posted a 5.51 ERA with 5.0 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 150 1/3 innings with the Tigers' Triple-A Toledo affiliate in 2013.
  • The Padres have acquired catcher Adam Moore from the Royals in exchange for cash considerations, tweets Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star. The 29-year-old has seen bit action at the MLB level in each of the last five years. In his longest stint, a 2010 run with the Mariners, Moore managed only a .513 OPS in 218 plate appearances.

Minor Moves: Moore, Lillibridge, Martinez

By Steve Adams | August 8, 2013 at 3:57pm CDT

Today's minor moves from around the league…

  • Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star tweets that the Royals have requested release waivers on catcher Adam Moore. A one-time top prospect in the Mariners system, Moore has appeared in just 11 games since the 2011 season. In 271 Major League plate appearances, the now-29-year-old Moore has batted .200/.237/.310. He's been significantly better at the Triple-A level, where he owns a career slash line of .273/.333/.427 in 887 plate appearances. Moore's release will allow the Royals to select the contract of left-hander Francisley Bueno.
  • The Yankees outrighted Brent Lillibridge to Triple-A after he cleared waivers, according to Daniel Barbarisi of the Wall Street Journal (Twitter link). Lillibridge was designated for assignment on Monday after batting .171/.194/.200 in 37 plate appearances for the Yankees.
  • The Indians announced (via Twitter) that they have released right-hander Fabio Martinez from Class-A Carolina. The 23-year-old was on the 40-man roster for the club at one point last season but has seen his command decline rapidly. In his last 57 1/3 minor league innings, Martinez has walked 75 batters en route to an ERA north of 10.00. He does miss plenty of bats, however, as he's whiffed 67 hitters in those 57 1/3 frames. Martinez was originally signed by the Angels out of the Dominican Republic.
  • Five players are currently in DFA limbo: Laynce Nix of the Phillies, Josh Sullivan of the Rockies, Mark Reynolds of the Indians, Travis Blackley of the Astros and Guillermo Quiroz of the Giants.

Royals Claim Adam Moore On Waivers

By Zachary Links | July 7, 2012 at 2:55pm CDT

The Royals have claimed Adam Moore on waivers, a source tells Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com (via Twitter).  The catcher was designated for assignment by the Mariners last week in order to make room for pitcher Josh Kinney on the 40-man roster.

Moore, 28, recently underwent his second surgery in two years to repair a medial meniscus tear in his right knee.  The catcher has a slashline of of .209/.247/.372 in 24 games for Triple-A Tacoma this season and did not appear in any games for the M's.  Yesterday, agent Mike McCann insisted to Crasnick that his client is healthy.

AL West Notes: Suzuki, Rays, Hernandez, Moore

By Mike Axisa | July 6, 2012 at 5:59pm CDT

Former University of Florida catcher Mike Zunino was named the Golden Spikes Award winner today, which recognizes him as the best amateur player in the county. Zunino was the third overall pick by the Mariners in last month's draft and recently signed for $4MM. Here's the latest from his new division, the AL West…

  • Athletics GM Billy Beane did not deny that he has spoken to the Rays about catcher Kurt Suzuki, reports ESPN's Jim Bowden (on Twitter). Beane did say that he speaks to Tampa GM Andrew Friedman regularly, however.
  • Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik has given no indication that he's willing to trade Felix Hernandez, but SI.com's Tom Verducci says they should make their ace available. He says the reality of Hernandez's age, workload, and contract should not make him untouchable.
  • The Mariners designated Adam Moore for assignment last Sunday and have yet to make a decision about what they're going to do with him according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick (Twitter links). The backstop has battled knee problems but agent Mike McCann insists his client is healthy.

Mariners Designate Adam Moore For Assignment

By edcreech | July 1, 2012 at 2:15pm CDT

The Mariners have designated catcher Adam Moore for assignment, the team announced. The move was made to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for pitcher Josh Kinney. In a corresponding move, the Mariners placed pitcher Erasmo Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow flexor strain.

Moore, a former sixth round selection of the Mariners in the 2006 draft, has had two stints on the disabled list this season. The most recent was for his second surgery in two years to repair a medial meniscus tear in his right knee. Moore has not appeared in a game for Mariners this season, but has played 24 games for Triple-A Tacoma with a batting line of .209/.247/.372. In his three-year major league career spanning 68 games, Moore has hit .197/.231/.295 with a caught stealing rate of 17%.
