Rangers Designate Adam Rosales For Assignment

By Jeff Todd | March 30, 2014 at 2:58pm CDT

SUNDAY: The Rangers announced they have designated Rosales for assignment. The Rangers now have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Rosales to the minor leagues.

SATURDAY: The Rangers will designate infielder Adam Rosales for assignment, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports via Twitter.

Readers of the site will remember seeing a similar headline on several recent occasions, as Rosales was DFA'd and claimed several times last year, moving between the Rangers and division-rival Athletics. The 30-year-old looked to be in better shape this time around after Texas gave him a $750K salary to avoid arbitration, but struggled to a .159/.208/.205 line with 15 strikeouts in 48 spring plate appearances.

Rangers Avoid Arbitration With Adam Rosales

By Steve Adams | November 14, 2013 at 4:07pm CDT

The Rangers have avoided arbitration with infielder Adam Rosales by agreeing to a one-year, $750K contract, according to Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com (on Twitter). Rosales is represented by agent Steve Hilliard of Octagon.

The 30-year-old Rosales bounced back and forth between the Rangers and A's an unthinkable amount of times. Rosales was designated for assignment by Oakland on July 31, claimed by Texas on Aug. 2, designated for assignment by the Rangers on Aug. 5, claimed by the A's on Aug. 8, designated by Oakland again on Aug. 10 and finally claimed for the last time by the Rangers on Aug. 12.

In 166 plate appearances between Oakland and Texas this season, Rosales batted .190/.259/.327. He appeared at second base, third base, shortstop and left field, and he also posseses more then 200 career innings at first base. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz had projected a salary of $900K from Rosales, who earned $700K in 2013.

Texas Notes: Astros, Rangers, Springer, Berkman

By Mark Polishuk | August 16, 2013 at 10:37pm CDT

There's a chance that the two Texas clubs could find themselves on the opposite ends of the standings come season's end.  As the MLBTR reverse standings tell us, the Rangers entered today four games behind the Braves for the best record in baseball, while the 39-81 Astros have a firm grasp on the league's worst record.  The Astros are on pace to become the first team in baseball history to select the No. 1 overall pick in three consecutive amateur drafts.

Here are some news items out of the Lone Star State…

  • Astros prospect George Springer will remain in minors through the end of the Triple-A season and their playoffs, general manager Jeff Luhnow tells MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.  The center field star could be brought up by mid-September if the club feels it would make sense.  Springer, 23, has a combined .303/.411/.605 line and 33 homers in 520 PA between Double-A and Triple-A this season.  Baseball America tabbed Springer as the 20th-best prospect in the sport in their midseason prospect rankings after ranking him 37th before the season; he was also highly-touted by both ESPN's Keith Law (43rd) and MLB.com (58th) in preseason ratings.
  • The Astros will make relief pitching a priority this winter, manager Bo Porter told reporters (including McTaggart).  Houston will likely try to obtain at least one veteran reliever to aid their young relief corps, McTaggart speculates.
  • The Rangers and Lance Berkman are trying to decide if they will wait until the rosters expand on September 1 to activate the veteran slugger from the DL.  Berkman played four games on a rehab assignment but told reporters (including Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News) that he has "concerns about competing at the level I think I am capable of. If I can’t do that, I’m not sure, I can be a positive piece for the team. There is no doubt I can compete. I just don’t know about the level.”  Berkman has a .732 OPS in 282 PA with Texas this year but he has been on the DL for over two months with hip and knee injuries and even considered retirement earlier this summer.
  • Adam Rosales could be a factor in the Berkman situation, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan explains.  The infielder would likely be the one designated for assignment to make roster space for Berkman and the Rangers don't want to lose him again.  Rosales has already been designated four times since July 8 and has bounced back and forth between the Rangers' and Athletics' rosters over the last few weeks.

Rangers Claim Adam Rosales

By Steve Adams | August 12, 2013 at 12:50pm CDT

The Rangers have claimed Adam Rosales off waivers from the Athletics for the second time in the past 10 days, the team announced via press release.

Rosales, 30, has been designated for assignment by the A's on three separate occasions in the past five weeks. The first time, he cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento. Following a July 31 DFA, he was claimed by the division-rival Rangers. Texas designated Rosales for assignment just three days later, however, in order to make room for outfielder Joey Butler.

Oakland reclaimed Rosales, only to designate him again just days later, this time to clear a roster spot for right-hander Sonny Gray. The versatile Rosales is batting .191/.267/.316 in 154 plate appearances with the A's this season. He didn't get an at-bat in his previous three-game stint with the Rangers.

AL West Notes: Ryan, Jaso, Rosales

By Aaron Steen | August 10, 2013 at 8:24pm CDT

Here's a look at the latest from the AL West:

  • Nolan Ryan met with reporters ahead of the Rangers' matchup with the Astros tonight and said he doesn't anticipate changes in regard to his position as the club's CEO. “Things have settled down and I feel good about the ballclub and the way things are going," Ryan is quoted as saying in an article by TR Sullivan of MLB.com. "You just get through each season and see how you feel and how your health is."
  • The hall-of-famer said he's happy with the club's position following GM Jon Daniels' acquisition of Alex Rios from the White Sox to replace the suspended Nelson Cruz. Ryan also told reporters that he's "thrilled" with Ron Washington's stewardship of the club.
  • John Jaso's absence and the lack of other catchers on the Athletics' 40-man roster mean that Oakland might have to start monitoring the waiver wire for backstops, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. Jaso has been out since July 25 with a concussion.
  • The A's recently designated Adam Rosales for assignment, but Jane Lee of MLB.com notes that the club is a fan of his defense and would probably like to retain him. In the last 11 days, the 30-year-old has been DFA'd twice by the A's and once by the Rangers.

Athletics Designate Adam Rosales For Assignment

By Jeff Todd | August 10, 2013 at 8:53am CDT

For the third time in just eleven days, infielder Adam Rosales has been designated for assignment, this time by the Athletics, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter.) The move will make room for hurler Sonny Gray on the club's active roster.

Of course, it was the A's who kicked off Rosales's recent movements, designating him on July 31. After being claimed by the Rangers, Rosales suddenly found himself back in Oakland after being designated by Texas. In the course of his travels, the 30-year-old has seen just one at-bat. His triple-slash line stands at .191/.267/.316 over 154 plate appearances.

The Athletics' one-day fling with Rosales is not as cruel as it may seem at first blush. As Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports (on Twitter), the club intends to try and pass Rosales through waivers and keep him in the organization. With the exception of his brief dalliance with the Rangers, Rosales has been with the A's since 2010, bouncing between the big leagues and Triple-A Sacramento.

Athletics Claim Adam Rosales

By Steve Adams | August 8, 2013 at 1:26pm CDT

Adam Rosales' stay in Texas was brief, to say the least. The Athletics announced on Twitter that they have re-claimed the infielder off waivers from the Rangers after he was designated for assignment last week. Oakland will make a corresponding 25-man roster move tomorrow.

The Rangers claimed Rosales off waivers from the A's on Aug. 2, and he was only property of Texas for three days before being designated for assignment once again. Rosales, 30, is hitting .193/.268/.319 on the season. He didn't receive an at-bat during his three-game tenure with the Rangers. The A's could potentially need the extra infield depth, as new acquisition Alberto Callaspo suffered what was thought to be a minor injury in a home-plate collision yesterday.

Rangers Designate Adam Rosales For Assignment

By Steve Adams | August 5, 2013 at 4:47pm CDT

The Rangers have designated Adam Rosales for assignment to clear a roster spot for Joey Butler, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Round Rock, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News (on Twitter).

The Rangers just claimed the 30-year-old Rosales off waivers from the division-rival Athletics this past Friday. The Rangers recalled Butler and Engel Beltre today after it was announced that Nelson Cruz will miss the remainder of the season as he serves a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis PED investigation.

Rosales didn't get an at-bat for the Rangers and batted .193/.268/.319 in 153 plate appearances for the A's this season. He is a career .220/.289/.334 hitter in parts of six seasons with the Reds and A's.

Rangers Claim Adam Rosales

By Steve Adams | August 2, 2013 at 1:02pm CDT

The Rangers have claimed infielder Adam Rosales off waivers from Oakland, the Athletics announced today (on Twitter). The 30-year-old Rosales was designated for assignment by the A's in order to clear a roster spot for Alberto Callaspo, whom they acquired from the Angels on Monday in exchange for Grant Green. In other words, that trade ultimately impacted the rosters of three separate AL West clubs.

Rosales has been with Oakland since being acquried from the Reds along with Willy Taveras in exchange for Aaron Miles and a PTBNL prior to the 2010 season. He's hitting just .193/.268/.319 in 153 plate appearances for the A's this season and is a career .220/.289/.334 hitter. Rosales is a versatile fielder, with significant experience at second base, third base and shortstop. He's also seen time at first base and in the outfield. Despite his versatility, Ultimate Zone Rating suggests he's best-suited to play second base.

The Rangers have issued a press release confirming the move, adding that Rosales will be in uniform with the big league club tonight, so a corresponding roster move will need to be made.

Athletics Designate Adam Rosales For Assignment

By Zachary Links | July 31, 2013 at 12:05pm CDT

The Athletics announced that they have designated infielder Adam Rosales for assignment.  The move will allow the club to clear a 25-man roster spot for the newly-acquired Alberto Callaspo.

Rosales hit just .193/.268/.319 in 153 plate appearances for Oakland this season.  The light-hitting 30-year-old has significant experience at second base, third base, and shortstop with some time spent at first base.  This marks the second time that Rosales has been designated for assignment by the A's this month with the first one coming on July 8th.
