Yankees Done With Pettitte?

By | December 25, 2008 at 2:03am CDT

Kat O’Brien of New York Newsday has learned from a source that the Yankees are "pretty happy" with their current roster and may no longer care to bring back Andy Pettitte.  The club could soon pull its one-year, $10MM offer.  Pettitte, 36, went 14-14 in 2008 with a 4.54 ERA.

O’Brien also presents us a timeline of Tuesday’s deal for Mark Teixeira, from the Yankees’ perspective.

UPDATE: Ken Davidoff of Newsday thinks Andy Pettitte will wind up coming back.  Most experts seem to agree.

Yankees Moving On From Pettitte?

By Tim Dierkes | December 23, 2008 at 10:54pm CDT

Peter Abraham of the LoHud Journal suggests the Yankees may be ready to move on from Andy Pettitte.  He says that unless they’re able to trade an outfielder such as Nick Swisher or Hideki Matsui, they may prefer not to pony up the $10MM for Pettitte.

Pettitte To Yanks “Virtually Inevitable”

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2008 at 10:51am CDT

Ken Rosenthal reports that a source familiar with Andy Pettitte’s thinking said it’s "virtually inevitable" that he will reach an agreement with the Yankees.

Earlier in the week we heard rumors that Pettitte received a three-year $36MM offer, but the Yankees’ offer of about $10MM could be enough to retain the veteran lefty.

Pettitte Hopes To Return To Yankees

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 18, 2008 at 7:16pm CDT

On the day the Yankees introduced their new big-name pitchers, The New York Post reports that Andy Pettitte still wants to play in pinstripes. According to the Post Joe Girardi talked with Pettitte and heard that "he is still excited about coming back."

Girardi heard that Pettitte "is very excited" about recent additions A.J. Burnett and C.C. Sabathia. The Post also reports that Yankees GM Brian Cashman thinks the negotiations are progressing well for the Yankees.

Heyman’s Latest: Perez, Greinke, Dye, Garland

By Tim Dierkes | December 18, 2008 at 2:16pm CDT

The latest from SI.com’s Jon Heyman, non-Teixeira department…

  • Heyman describes the Mets’ chance of signing Oliver Perez as "remote for now." He names other "potential suitors" – the Brewers, Dodgers, Reds, and perhaps Mariners.
  • Apparently some Yankees people wouldn’t mind if Andy Pettitte passed on their $10MM offer, as they’d be able to pursue Ben Sheets or Derek Lowe.
  • The Red Sox "looked into" trading for Zack Greinke but didn’t like the price.
  • Heyman says the Reds, Braves, and Rays are still showing interest in Jermaine Dye.
  • He says the Dodgers, White Sox, and Mets "could be possibilities" for Jon Garland.  A return to Chicago?

Sheets Market Still Developing

By Tim Dierkes | December 17, 2008 at 9:51am CDT

According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman:

There’s no evidence Ben Sheets has received any proposals for two years or more yet, though he’s drawing interest from at least the Rangers and Yankees, and very likely his old Brewers team, as well.

As Heyman says, Sheets’ timing was terrible.  If his flexor tendon injury had occurred in April and he finished the season strong, he might’ve been looking at three or four years.  Instead, the lingering memory of the September injury had a huge effect on his market despite the fact that he made 31 starts in 2008.  Heyman says the Yankees may wait to bid on Sheets until they hear Andy Pettitte’s decision.

As Sheets is a Type A free agent offered arbitration, the Brewers could swipe a first-round pick if he signs elsewhere.  Assuming they can’t sign him, they have to be rooting for a new team to jump into the fray since they wouldn’t get a first-round pick from the Rangers or Yankees.

Derek Lowe Rumors: Tuesday

By Tim Dierkes | December 16, 2008 at 9:53pm CDT

SI.com’s Jon Heyman has the latest on the market for free agent starter Derek Lowe.  Heyman says "some baseball people think" the Cubs might get in on Lowe, since his price tag may be similar to the four years and $63MM left on Jake Peavy’s contract.

Heyman believes the Yankees will resume discussions with Lowe if they fail to sign Andy Pettitte.  However, he says they expect Pettitte to accept their $10MM offer.

Heyman indicates the Braves, Red Sox, Mets and Angels are also on Lowe’s radar.

Mets Interested In Tim Redding

By Tim Dierkes | December 16, 2008 at 7:30am CDT

Add another pitcher to the Mets’ list.  According to Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News, the Mets have expressed interest in new free agent Tim Redding.  Redding was non-tendered by the Nationals on Friday after they failed to work out a deal with the Rockies.

Ken Davidoff says Oliver Perez and Derek Lowe continue to top the Mets’ list; they’re less enthused with Ben Sheets, Jon Garland, or Randy Wolf.  As for Pedro Martinez’s replacement, Davidoff suggests names like Freddy Garcia or Eric Milton.  As for Andy Pettitte, Mark Feinsand says the Mets are not involved.

Odds and Ends: Astros, Saito, Yankees

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 15, 2008 at 8:14pm CDT

Links for Monday night…

  • Astros GM Ed Wade is "kicking the tires" on players to share time with Geoff Blum at third next year. It seems unlikely that they can afford Ty Wigginton.
  • The Marlins haven’t yet inquired on Takashi Saito, a recent non-tender.
  • It’s "very unlikely" though "not impossible" that Mark Teixeira or Manny Ramirez becomes a Yankee according to Tyler Kepner. He also thinks that the longer Andy Pettitte waits, the lower the chances are of a return to the Yankees.
  • Adam Everett thinks the Tigers are a great fit for him. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said Everett’s in line to get most of the starts at shortstop.
  • Felipe Lopez could be a positive for the D’Backs in spite of his questionable effort and unspectacular defense, writes Keith Law.
  • Rob Neyer thinks that the Yankees "pretty obviously overpaid" for A.J. Burnett.
  • Here’s a video clip of Bronx Banter authors and Anthony McCarron debating the pros and cons of the Burnett signing.
  • Sarah D. Morris weighs in on the Dodgers’ offseason moves.
  • Tony Massarotti ranks the five worst current pitching contracts.

Pettitte Has Three-Year, $36 Million Offer?

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 1:14pm CDT

SI.com’s Jon Heyman says Andy Pettitte’s agents are telling teams he had a three-year, $36MM offer in hand (the team is not known).  I can’t figure out what team would be willing to make that commitment.  This information apparently has not moved the Yankees to increase their one-year, $10MM offer.
