Jake Peavy Rumors: Wednesday

By Tim Dierkes | January 7, 2009 at 10:37pm CDT

10:37pm: Kevin Towers said tonight the Braves made a good offer for Peavy a few months ago, but it was unclear whether Peavy would approve a trade there.  He also said a proposal from the Cubs "would fill several holes" on the Padres’ roster.  Peavy’s agent Barry Axelrod says a framework was in place with the Cubs at the Winter Meetings but they were "trying to fill out that framework" by acquiring some pieces.

Bruce Miles runs through the chances of the Cubs signing various free agent starters mentioned below.

3:32pm: Padres CEO Sandy Alderson doesn’t believe there have been new talks with the Cubs, though that is not exactly what Wittenmyer said below.  Alderson said it’s likely Peavy will be with the Padres on Opening Day.  He added that the Padres were never that close to a deal with the Braves and did not have an offer from the Cubs on which they could give a yes or no.  Also, he doesn’t believe the team’s impending sale changes their position on Peavy.

10:03am: According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, "those close to Jim Hendry expect him to restart the Jake Peavy talks" now that the Cubs have unloaded salary with the Jason Marquis trade.  Hendry admitted yesterday he hopes to add another pitcher before Opening Day.

Wittenmyer notes that the Cubs’ 2010 payroll was unaffected by the recent moves, so Hendry would need a nod from the new ownership group before taking on Peavy’s contract.  The new ownership could be in place with just enough time for the Cubs to swing a Peavy deal, Wittenmyer believes.

As alternatives, Wittenmyer suggests Braden Looper and Tim Redding would fit better financially than Derek Lowe.  Dave van Dyck wonders if Andy Pettitte could be a fit.  Bob Klapisch says the Mets have considered Pettitte.

Pettitte Rejects Yankees’ Offer

By Tim Dierkes | January 6, 2009 at 4:39pm CDT

4:39pm: Joel Sherman says the Yankees are "strongly inclined to lower the $10MM offer" made to Pettitte now that he’s rejected it.  A deal seems unlikely, though moving some salary might compel the Yanks to put the $10MM offer back on the table.

3:34pm: Sam Borden, attending the Mark Teixeira press conference, said Hal Steinbrenner "did not seem particularly optimistic" about re-signing Pettitte.

TUESDAY, 10:17am: John Harper and Ken Rosenthal are both saying the Yankees haven’t closed the door on signing Pettitte.  Brian Cashman has talked to Pettitte’s agents recently, according to Harper.  He adds that the Yanks "seem determined to draw the line at $10 million."

MONDAY, 10:18pm: According to Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, Andy Pettitte rejected the Yankees’ one-year, $10MM offer.  The Yanks could certainly find a useful free agent arm for a similar price, or else just go with internal options.  But one more veteran in the rotation could go a long way.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Swisher, Nady, Kapler, Zaun

By Tim Dierkes | January 6, 2009 at 8:50am CDT

The latest from Ken Rosenthal.

  • A recent Ned Colletti-Scott Boras conversation about Manny Ramirez didn’t result in progress.  Boras still has his sights on at least $100MM over four years.  Rosenthal adds that Manny is "cool to the idea of playing in San Francisco."
  • Nick Swisher and Xavier Nady are drawing "significant interest."  Rosenthal speculates that the Giants, Braves, or Pirates would make sense.
  • The door is not closed with the Yankees and Andy Pettitte.  Pettitte recently rejected the Yanks’ one-year, $10MM offer.
  • Some Mets people prefer Oliver Perez to Derek Lowe.  The Braves have yet to speak to Boras about Lowe, while the Brewers and Phillies have financial concerns about fitting him in.
  • Trevor Hoffman has a West Coast preference (the Dodgers or maybe a Padres reconciliation) but interest with the Brewers is mutual.  Other relievers on the Dodgers’ radar: Juan Cruz, Guillermo Mota, and Dennys Reyes.
  • Brian Fuentes’ agent had serious talks with the Yankees, but no offer was made.  Fuentes would’ve been Mariano Rivera’s set-up man and perhaps taken over upon his retirement.
  • Rosenthal notes that MLB kicked in a small part of the $10MM owed to Sidney Ponson from their luxury tax pool, which is not uncommon.
  • If they can afford it, the Rays would like to sign Gabe Kapler.
  • The Orioles, Red Sox, and A’s are interested in Gregg Zaun.
  • Perhaps because of the cool market for his services, Orlando Cabrera is willing to play second base.  The Yankees did not have interest.
  • That Gavin Floyd for Brian Roberts rumor "seemingly arose from internal discussions among Orioles officials."

Derek Lowe Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes | January 5, 2009 at 10:20pm CDT

10:20pm: Newsday’s Ken Davidoff learned tonight that the Mets "do not intend to raise their three-year, $36MM offer to [Lowe] at this time."  The Mets don’t feel that they have serious competition for Lowe, for some reason.  Oliver Perez and Randy Wolf remain the alternatives.

8:28am: According to Kat O’Brien of Newsday, "negotiations are expected to heat up for righthander Derek Lowe" this week for the Mets, who reportedly offered three years and $36MM (though Scott Boras indicated yesterday the proposal was never made).  Jon Heyman said recently that Lowe didn’t take this offer seriously; he’s aiming for a $16MM salary.  Heyman named the Phillies, Braves, Red Sox, Brewers, and Angels as possible suitors, with the last three more on the speculative side.

Mark Bowman doesn’t believe the Braves are willing to top the Mets’ reported offer, though.  In another article, Bowman suggested Jon Garland and Andy Pettitte are more likely options.

Braves Rumors: Pettitte, Glavine, Smoltz

By Tim Dierkes | January 5, 2009 at 10:15pm CDT

David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the latest hot stove info on the Braves.

  • The Braves still have roughly $25MM to spend, with a starting pitcher and a power-hitting outfielder on the shopping list.
  • Starters of interest: Derek Lowe, Andy Pettitte, and Jon Garland.  Mark Bowman of MLB.com doesn’t believe the Braves would exceed three years and $36MM for Lowe, a Boras client.
  • O’Brien isn’t sure if the Jake Peavy talks will restart.  But Frank Wren did reiterate that he wants to re-sign both Tom Glavine and John Smoltz if they’re able to pitch.
  • O’Brien notes that Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn remain on the free agent market, while the Cardinals could part with Rick Ankiel. All three bat left-handed, however.

Odds and Ends: Andruw, Marquis, Coonelly

By Tim Dierkes | January 5, 2009 at 10:42am CDT

Links for Monday…

  • In his first post for RotoAuthority, David Chase looks at players who were said to have lost weight or gained muscle during Spring Training ’08.  How did they perform in ’08?
  • The Red Sox inked infielder Nick Green to a minor league deal.
  • Murray Chass explains why the New York Times Company’s purchase of a share of the Red Sox was a conflict of interest.
  • Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik: "We’ve got an offer out right now for a piece of the puzzle, and I’d hope to hear in the next few days."
  • David Laurila talked to new Mariners exec Tony Blengino.  One of many interesting quotes (in reference to the Bill Bavasi regime and the ’07 club): "I thought that it was clear going in that, with all due respect, they overrated their team from the last year."
The Yankees will introduce Mark Teixeira tomorrow.  He passed his physical today.
  • River Ave. Blues and Peter Abraham ask whether the Yankees should consider Andruw Jones.  Evan Brunell looks at other possible fits.
  • The Dodgers talked to the Cubs about Jason Marquis, according to MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick.
  • Pirates president Frank Coonelly joins Mark Attanasio (Brewers) and Drayton McLane (Astros) in supporting a salary cap.
  • Jeff Moorad might be aggressive in the draft if he takes over the Padres.  Tom Krasovic adds that the Padres have already discussed spending up to $6MM on their #3 pick this June.
  • Keith Law likes the Angels’ Brian Fuentes signing, and doesn’t think the Indians gave up much for Mark DeRosa.
  • If the Indians are to add another significant player, they’ll have to get creative with contracts.
  • RAB and In Mo We Trust discuss Kevin Kernan’s recent suggestion that the Yanks sign Oliver Perez over Andy Pettitte.
  • A couple of recent Hot Stove Dailies from Jeff Passan: the Braves and A’s.
  • Athletics Nation asks whether Brian Sabean is "out-GMing" Billy Beane this winter.
  • Sox Machine on why the Gavin Floyd–Brian Roberts rumor makes no sense.

Latest On Andy Pettitte

By Tim Dierkes | December 31, 2008 at 10:37am CDT

According to John Harper of the New York Daily News:

A person in regular contact with Yankee brass said Tuesday he believes the club still wants Andy Pettitte back and believes a deal will get done, perhaps as early as next week. According to this person, someone in the Yankee organization was putting out that word as something of a scare tactic, knowing that Pettitte badly wants to pitch for the Yankees next season. "They just want him at their price, that’s still the bottom line," the person said.

Pettitte, 36, posted a 4.54 ERA in 33 starts this year.  His 2.9 K/BB and strong groundball rate indicate he’s capable of bouncing back.  He’s more than a fifth starter.

Cafardo’s Latest: Pettitte, Kotsay, Red Sox

By Nat Boyle | December 28, 2008 at 10:18am CDT

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has a number of items to cover in today’s Sunday paper:

  • While the Mets are front-runners in the Derek Lowe sweepstakes, the Red Sox have a lot of money to play with having lost out on Mark Teixeira and could make a strong play to outbid competition.
  • The Dodgers and Rangers are interested in Andy Pettitte if he doesn’t accept the Yankees reduced $10MM offer.
  • Don’t rule out a return to the Red Sox for Mark Kotsay as a fourth outfielder and added infield depth.
  • Cafardo reports a source close to the talks says Teixeira was "very concerned" with Mike Lowell’s fate should he sign with Boston, but that financial matters and the negotiations process removed that "awkward situation."
  • Jose Fernandez can play first and third base. He’s 34 and just completed seven years in Japan, hitting 20+ HR every year. He could be an interesting right handed-hitting option for teams looking to add depth to their infield and DH.
  • The Red Sox, Orioles, Braves, Reds, and Cardinals remain interested in Kenshin Kawakami.
  • Now that Teixeira is gone, Jim Bowden is not interested in Manny Ramirez. Perhaps Adam Dunn?
  • The Sox are still unwilling to deal Clay Buchholz for Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Pettitte Still Has Offer From Yanks

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 27, 2008 at 9:30am CDT

There have been lots of rumblings about the Yankees’ fading interest in Andy Pettitte, but he still has a $10MM offer from the club for 2009 according to Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News.

A baseball official confirmed to McCarron that the Yankees are ready to go in "another direction" since Phil Hughes seems ready for a rotation spot. The official said the chances of Pettitte’s return are "55-45 against."

We’re not likely to hear of any decisions until next week, when Yankees offices reopen.

Return to Yankees “Doubtful” For Pettitte

By Dan Slowey | December 26, 2008 at 8:35am CDT

FRIDAY: Kat O’Brien of Newsday: "The source said nothing had been finalized on Pettitte but that the Yankees were leaning toward no."

THURSDAY: After spending more than $400MM on C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and, of course, Mark Teixeira over the last few weeks, Andy Pettitte’s return to the Yankees is now "doubtful," a team official tells Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Pettitte has not yet responded to the Yankees’ original offer of a one-year, $10MM offer for 2009. The 36-year-old-lefty had a 4.54 ERA in 204 innings for the team in 2008.
