Red Sox Interested In Brad Wilkerson

Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald was able to confirm our rumor from yesterday, that the Red Sox have some interest in Brad Wilkerson.  Bradford says Wilkerson, a Boras client, is looking for three years and $21MM.  I don’t think the Sox would go anywhere near that price.

The same source told me on Friday that the Yankees, A’s, and Mariners have expressed interest in Wilkerson as well.  Wilkerson, 30, hit .234/.319/.467 for the Rangers last year in 119 games (doing most of his damage at home).  In his career he has played all three outfield positions plus first base.

Odds and Ends: Colon, Byrd, Sosa, Wilkerson

Some random links and whatnot for Saturday…

  • Joe Cowley says the White Sox have backed off on Bartolo Colon because he wants a two-year deal.  He believes the Royals are the frontrunner.
  • Rangers guru Jamey Newberg doesn’t think Marlon Byrd would be enough to get Matt Murton from the Cubs.
  • The Rangers might’ve entertained Sammy Sosa in a limited role, but he’s looking for 400-500 plate appearances.  Good luck with that!
  • Heard an unconfirmed whisper that the Red Sox may have some interest in Brad Wilkerson.
  • RotoAuthority takes a fantasy baseball look at Yovani Gallardo and Tim Lincecum.

Brewers Interested In Green, Wilkerson, Feliz

We know Brewers GM Doug Melvin has interest in Mike Cameron, Luis Gonzalez, and Kenny LoftonTom Haudricourt spoke to Melvin today, and learned of some additional free agent options on the radar.

The other possibilities: Shawn Green, Brad Wilkerson, and Pedro Feliz.  Kind of a smattering of uninspiring veterans.  Acquiring Green or Wilkerson would mean Ryan Braun and Bill Hall staying in their current positions.  None of these acquisitions are a slam dunk, even for us armchair GMs.  Melvin told Haudricourt he’d like to resolve the situation soon.

Odds and Ends: Jose Lopez, Green, Silva, Fukumori

Let’s round a few more rumors up, because they just don’t stop coming.

  • Says Jim Molony: no less than 10 teams have expressed interest in Carlos Silva.  Weak – 11 have expressed interest in Bedard, loser.
  • Other guys in the 10 interested teams club – Livan Hernandez and Kazuo Fukumori.  At least, that’s where their agents would like everyone to think.
  • The Padres can only afford one of Mike Cameron and Kosuke Fukudome.  They think Fukudome can play an adequate center.  Kevin Towers is still in talks with Cameron.
  • The Mariners are shopping Jose Lopez, who Jeff Passan names as a possible non-tender.  However Lopez already is already all tendered up through 2010 on a long-term pact.  So to ditch him the Ms would have to trade him or else cut him and eat the money, Russ Ortiz style.
  • Passan suggests the Rays might prefer to go with Shawn Green for their right field vacancy, as Geoff Jenkins and Brad Wilkerson want multiyear deals.  The Giants also like Green, for some reason.  Nick Cafardo suggests Trot Nixon could be the guy behind the guy for the Rays.

Odds and Ends: Colon, Clark, Gagne

Random rumors, let’s round ’em up.

Healey’s Latest: Wilkerson, Marte

Gotham Baseball’s Mark Healey has a new post up with some good trade rumors:

  • The Mets are talking to the Rangers about Brad Wilkerson, not Eric Gagne.  This makes sense, as Wilkerson has hit lefties well this year and can play right field.
  • The Mets are also talking to the Reds; could’ve been about Ken Griffey Jr. or David Weathers.  From what we’ve heard, though, Weathers is not available.  And would Junior approve a trade to the Mets?  He vetoed a trade there once before.
  • The Pirates want Alan Horne from the Yankees for Damaso Marte.  Given that Brian Cashman didn’t seem to want to give him up for Gagne, I don’t see this happening.
  • The Orioles are shopping Chad Bradford, but the Yankees aren’t allowed in the store.

Stark’s Latest

Jayson Stark has an assessment of the trade market over at ESPN.com.

  • Aside from the usual Mark Teixeira/Eric Gagne mentions, Stark believes many Rangers may be headed out at the trading deadline.  Specifically, he names Brad Wilkerson, Kenny Lofton, and Sammy Sosa.  Lofton is always a good midseason mercenary.  He’s like a Mike Stanton in that way.
  • Ken Griffey Jr. would approve a trade to Atlanta and might consider certain other teams.  Junior is making $12.5MM this year and next, plus a $4MM buyout for ’09.  Quite a bit of the contract is deferred, also.  $29MM over 2007-08 is still pretty steep, but now would be the right time to trade Griffey.
  • Nationals – still asking too much for Chad Cordero.  Bowden’s got time to wait around for the right deal, I suppose.
  • Best option for Todd Helton still appears to be the Angels, in Stark’s mind.  That does not seem workable to me, because Casey Kotchman has broken out and Vlad needs access to the DH spot.
  • Speaking of DHs, this might finally be the year Mike Sweeney gets traded and gets to play for a contender.  If he heats up, maybe the Twins could snag him.
  • Michael Bourn could be a trade candidate, if the Phillies decide he’s only a future fourth outfielder.  Probably makes sense to keep him around if Aaron Rowand is going to walk after this season.
  • The Astros are buyers, and they have all sorts of needs.  A young catcher would be nice, but those are always in short supply.
  • Speaking of young catchers, Jarrod Saltalamacchia has received interest but the Braves are not biting.  A lot hinges on Scott Thorman‘s performance and, of course, which young player the Braves are offered for Salty.  Most teams would love to have him.

Carroll: Astros-Rangers Trade?

Will Carroll’s latest rumor mill is churning up a new trade scenario:  Brad Wilkerson and Rod Barajas for Brad Lidge, Morgan Ensberg, and Fernando Nieve.

Barajas is most certainly expendable with Gerald Laird hitting .347/.380/.579 in 121 at-bats this year.  Barajas will be a member of this offseason’s weak free agent catcher class.

Wilkerson’s been subpar this season even while playing at Ameriquest, so I don’t see how swapping out Ensberg’s bat for his helps the club.  Even Barajas’s below-average hitting would be an improvement upon Brad Ausmus, but the Astros just wouldn’t gain enough in the proposed deal.  I have to think more players from Texas would be involved.

Nationals Snag Soriano, Will Remain At 2B

ESPN is reporting that Jim Bowden picked up Alfonso Soriano for the Nationals and sent Brad Wilkerson and Terrmel Sledge over to the Rangers.

The trade is a pretty fair one by my off-the-cuff analysis.  I’ll probably have some player projections on RotoAuthority tomorrow, given that players are moving from an extreme pitchers’ park to a home run haven.

Once extra piece of information that we’ve managed to acquire contradicts a statement in the ESPN report.  According to ESPN:

"With Jose Vidro already entrenched at second base, it’s believed that the Nationals would move Soriano to left field."

My source is saying that the Nationals’ front office is quietly concerned that Jose Vidro may be done for his career.  Expect Soriano to see most of his time at second base in years to come.

Brad Wilkerson To The Blue Jays?

The rumors just never seem to stop.  Here’s one I haven’t mentioned yet.

Apparently the Blue Jays might want to trade for Brad Wilkerson.  According to the Washington Post:  "Ricciardi has long coveted Wilkerson, who is coming off a down year in which he hit just .248 with 147 strikeouts. Ricciardi said his team might be able to deal pitching, and the possible offers include swingman Miguel Batista or 26-year-old starter Dave Bush."

It seems that Wilkerson’s strikeout tendencies are undercutting his true value.  That’s great for teams looking to acquire him.  Wilkerson is still young and has a .365 career OBP.  He’s got 20-30 HR pop.  He’s durable, averaging 537 at-bats over the past four seasons.  He’s versatile, able to play all three outfield positions and first base.

If Ricciardi has lost patience with supposed future star Alex Rios, Wilkerson would be a great addition in right field.  Sending two mediocre players like Bush and Batista over to the Nationals would be well worth it.

The Cubs are also interested in acquiring Wilkerson.
