Odds & Ends: Damon, A’s, Beckett, Reynolds, Dye

By Luke Adams 2 | February 21, 2010 at 4:29pm CDT

Sunday links….

  • Joe Cowley at the Chicago Sun-Times has Kenny Williams' final take on missing out on Johnny Damon to the Tigers. Cowley's piece also expands a bit on the Dye note we've linked to below.
  • The A's received cash to complete the trades for both Adam Rosales and Dana Eveland, writes Susan Slusser.
  • Regarding his current contract situation, Josh Beckett says he and the Red Sox "talked about talking," according to WEEI.com's Alex Speier. Beckett says he won't have anything to say about the situation during Spring Training or even after. Speier's piece also contains video highlights of Beckett's press conference, including his take on Mike Lowell's situation.
  • MLB.com's Steve Gilbert has a series of tweets regarding Mark Reynolds, who hopes to have his contract situation resolved within the next couple weeks. Reynolds says that the deadline for talks is still Opening Day. Gilbert adds that the current discussion is whether to buy out two or three arbitration years.
  • White Sox GM Ken Williams considered pursuing Jermaine Dye, but felt that the Sox' need for a left-handed bat was more pressing, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter).
  • MLB.com's Scott Merkin tweets that John Danks and the White Sox did not discuss a multi-year deal this offseason.
  • Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports, via Twitter, that the Rays were in the mix for Johnny Damon until the end, bidding more than every team but the Tigers.
  • Jim Leyland says that Damon's arrival in Detroit won't mean any less at-bats for Carlos Guillen, according to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press.
  • MLB.com's Jordan Bastian breaks down (via Twitter) the early-round draft picks the Blue Jays will now hold this summer, following the Mets' agreement with Rod Barajas.
  • Former Brave Greg Norton will head into 2010 as a coach instead of a player for the first time. He'll serve as the hitting coach for the New Orleans Zephyrs, the Marlins' Triple-A affiliate.
  • WEEI's Alex Speier takes a look at the first impression made in Red Sox camp by slick-fielding shortstop Jose Iglesias. Many felt the Sox overpaid for the Cuban prospect last summer, but according to Speier, the Cubs were willing to pay even more.

Odds & Ends: Braves, Orioles, Pirates

By Mark Polishuk | October 7, 2009 at 8:05pm CDT

A few notes from around the majors…

  • Veteran Greg Norton tied a major league record in what may be his final season, says MLB.com's Mark Bowman
  • In another blog entry, Bowman said that though Martin Prado spent some time in the outfield while playing in his native Venezuela, Prado is not a candidate for Atlanta's right field job.
  • MASN's Steve Melewski reports that the Orioles have signed their first Guatemalan player, 17-year-old Manuel Hernandez
  • In a chat on MLB.com, Pirates president Frank Coonelly said that Andy LaRoche was "open" to the possibility of playing second base next season given some of Pittsburgh's minor-league options at third base (including top prospect Pedro Alvarez).
  • Dick Kaegel of MLB.com reports on two changes to Kansas City's coaching staff in 2010.

Odds and Ends: Pudge, Ohman, Manny

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 11:47am CDT

Rounding up linkage for Monday…

  • The Jays claimed two players off waivers: shortstop Angel Sanchez and pitcher Kelvin Jimenez.
  • The Cubs and Nationals swapped minor leaguers.  The Cubs sent pitcher Matt Avery to the Nats for another pitcher named Ryan Buchter.
  • Good stuff from ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick – he surveyed 15 front-office people on the top stories of the offseason.
  • One of a million conversations taking place at the GM meetings: Brian Cashman chatting with Walt Jocketty.
  • Tony Massarotti’s top five lies told during free agency.
  • Ken Davidoff names his top ten GMs.
  • Joe Posnanski on the Mike Jacobs–Leo Nunez trade.
  • River Ave. Blues explains why the Yankees should offer arbitration to Ivan Rodriguez.
  • The official list of the 191 players eligible for free agency.
  • The Braves hope to re-sign free agents Will Ohman, Greg Norton, and John Smoltz.  The Smoltz situation may not be resolved until January.
  • Tracy Ringolsby lists needs for every team.
  • The Tigers signed an independent league lefty named Kris Regas to a minor league deal.
  • John Shea says the Giants and A’s will consider the big-name free agent sluggers this winter.
  • Padres GM Kevin Towers doesn’t see Manny Ramirez signing until Christmas time.  He sees the New York and L.A. teams as suitors.
  • Joe Sheehan proposes five radical offseason moves.
  • The Cubs signed a couple of Korean players: catcher/outfielder Jae-hoon Ha and pitcher Soo-min Jung.

Braves Acquire Greg Norton

By Tim Dierkes | May 5, 2008 at 1:57pm CDT

The Braves just put out a press release; they’ve acquired Greg Norton from the Mariners for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Norton, 35, certainly didn’t do anything wrong with the Mariners.  He was 7 for 16 with a couple of doubles before they DFA’d him.  He’s a solid switch-hitting bench bat, a nice pickup for Frank Wren.  We might be able to give Norton a mulligan for his off-year in ’07; he was coming off knee surgery and finished the year with elbow surgery.

Odds and Ends: Colon, Clark, Gagne

By Tim Dierkes | December 2, 2007 at 9:44am CDT

Random rumors, let’s round ’em up.

  • How about Bartolo Colon to the Mets?  David Lennon notes that Omar Minaya sold the farm to acquire him in 2002 as the Expos’ GM.
  • Scott Lauber says Aaron Rowand is insisting on a five-year deal.  He adds that the Phils have interest in Geoff Jenkins but he might be too expensive.
  • Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller are considered untouchable, so don’t look for the Tigers to make any big trades.
  • Patrick Saunders runs down some free agents the Rockies may consider for the back end of their rotation: Tony Armas, Matt Clement, Steve Trachsel, Josh Fogg, Jason Jennings, Jon Lieber, Mark Redman, Brett Tomko, and Kip Wells.
  • The Rays may go after Tony Clark, in large part because they’re seeking leadership.  Marc Topkin agrees, and also rattles off Geoff Jenkins, Brad Wilkerson, Cliff Floyd, Mike Lamb, Mark Sweeney, Corey Koskie, and Greg Nortion as other possibilities.
  • It’s expected that Eric Gagne will not accept Boston’s offer of arbitration, because he wants to close.  One place he could do so is Texas, who like him if he’ll take one year.
  • The Marlins’ new marketing materials exclude Miguel Cabrera.
  • The Rangers have interest in Sean Casey and Mike Lamb.

Crawford To Cubs Rumor Shot Down

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2007 at 1:27pm CDT

ESPN 1000’s Bruce Levine suggested yesterday that the Cubs were preparing an offer for Carl Crawford.  However, team officials told Roger Mooney today that there’s nothing brewing.  Apparently the rumor was Rich Hill, Eric Patterson, and a prospect for Crawford.  That doesn’t seem sufficient anyway.  There was even some talk of a three-way deal involving the Brewers and Yankees, which was from Gotham Baseball.  According to Mooney, none of it is for real.  You be the judge.

In other Rays news, they picked up Al Reyes’ $2.3MM option and passed on Greg Norton at $1MM.  No surprises there. UPDATE: Reyes actually has a $1MM base salary plus $1.3MM in incentives.
