Rockies Notes: Atkins, Barmes

By Luke Adams 2 | November 19, 2009 at 8:25pm CDT

The Colorado Rockies will keep Garrett Atkins on their 40-man roster for now, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Not releasing Atkins yet will give the Rockies a few more weeks to attempt to trade him, before the non-tender date of December 12th (coincidentally, Atkins' 30th birthday).

Renck mentions that interested teams, such as the Rangers and Orioles, have been reluctant to deal for the corner infielder, since the Rockies will almost certainly be forced to part ways with him anyway. Atkins is in his final year of arbitration, and made $7.05MM in 2009. After losing his starting role last season, Atkins isn't worth nearly that much to Colorado. This move, however, suggests the club is still hoping to salvage some return, rather than letting him go for nothing.

In the same piece, Renck mentions that the Rockies have started discussing a multi-year contract with Clint Barmes. The Rockies are hoping to sign Barmes, who earned about $1.6MM last year, to a two-year deal with a club option for a third year.

Odds & Ends: DeRosa, Smoltz, Indians

By Mark Polishuk | November 17, 2009 at 9:12pm CDT

Some news and notes from around the majors….

  • It was previously reported that eight teams were interested in veteran utilityman Mark DeRosa.  According to Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times, you can add the Mets, Braves and Twins to the list, as well as DeRosa's most recent team, the Cardinals.  With so many interested parties, DeRosa's agent Keith Grunewald believes his client should have no problem getting his desired multi-year contract.
  • In that same article, Hernandez notes that the Dodgers talked to Grunewald about both DeRosa and another of the agent's clients, pitcher John Smoltz.  The Dodgers were previously cited as one of seven clubs looking at Smoltz, with Los Angeles being one of the teams looking at the veteran right-hander as a starter.
  • Speaking of Smoltz, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart (via Twitter) says the Astros aren't interested in the future Hall-of-Famer.
  • Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com breaks down what Cleveland might do with the back-end of their 40-man roster and with some of their top minor-league prospects.
  • Tracy Ringolsby, in a response to a reader's e-mail, doesn't believe the Rockies will pursue a free-agent infielder given the team's satisfaction with Ian Stewart and Clint Barmes.  Ringolsby also thinks that the return of Jeff Francis from injury will preclude Colorado from chasing a free-agent starter.
  • Cardinals GM John Mozeliak all but confirmed that Troy Glaus won't be back in St. Louis next season, says MLB.com's Matthew Leach.  Leach also notes that Mozeliak was non-committal about Jason LaRue returning as the Cards' backup catcher in 2010.

Rockies Rumors: Hawpe, Atkins, Barmes, Street

By Tim Dierkes | November 11, 2009 at 12:15pm CDT

Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post has the Rockies hot stove chatter; let's take a look.

  • GM Dan O'Dowd explained that, "There is a difference between listening and attempting to move a player."  Brad Hawpe falls squarely into the "listening" category.  Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports say the Rockies would probably seek a right-handed hitting outfielder and a reliever for Hawpe.
  • New contracts for O'Dowd and manager Jim Tracy are still pending a few small details.
  • The Rockies are trying to trade Garrett Atkins.  If and when they fail, they'll release him.  So rather than wait until the December 12th non-tender deadline, Atkins should join the free agent ranks by November 20th at the latest.  The Rangers have "moderate interest" in Atkins, according to Jeff Wilson of the Dallas Morning News.
  • The Rockies will attempt to sign arbitration-eligible players Clint Barmes and Huston Street to multiyear deals, but if that doesn't work they'll simply get one-year contracts.
  • Catcher Paul Phillips who had 54 plate appearances with the big club this year, is expected to be designated for assignment re-signed to a minor league deal to create 40-man roster space.

Rockies Rumors: Marquis, Barmes, De La Rosa

By Tim Dierkes | October 14, 2009 at 9:21am CDT

More Rockies hot stove info…

  • Free agent starter Jason Marquis told MLB.com's Thomas Harding he'd love to return to the Rockies, but "the ball's in their court."  Last month, Marquis downplayed an assertion from his friend Jeff Francoeur that the pitcher would love to come to New York.  It was a different market, but Marquis' agent snagged his client a three-year, $21MM deal coming off a 6.02 ERA season back in December of '06.  2009 was a typical Marquis season aside from an increased groundball rate.
  • We already knew the Rockies had designs on locking up closer Huston Street, who's under team control through 2010.  Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post says the Rox also intend to approach Clint Barmes and Jorge de la Rosa about extensions.  Barmes is under team control through 2011, de la Rosa through 2010.
  • Renck believes the Rockies will offer Street "a three-year deal in the neighborhood of $25MM, which might not be enough to sign him but is a good start."  Ah, overpaying for saves.

Rockies Avoid Arb With Buchholz, Grilli, Barmes

By Tim Dierkes | January 20, 2009 at 1:09pm CDT

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies avoided arbitration with Taylor Buchholz ($1.055MM plus $40K in incentives), Jason Grilli ($800K), and Clint Barmes ($1.625MM).  The case of Garrett Atkins remains unresolved.

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Holliday, Barmes

By Tim Dierkes | September 29, 2008 at 9:25am CDT

Let’s see what we can find in three new columns from Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post today.

  • I wrote last week that the Rockies would come in a bit under $80MM after arbitration raises.  Renck pegs it around $75MM.
  • The team’s plan is to shop Garrett Atkins for a frontline starter.  If the interest is not there (why would it be?), they could switch to Matt Holliday.  Renck ponders Matt Cain and a prospect to Colorado, but that is a lot to give up for one year of Holliday.  Plus the Giants are not looking to add an outfielder.
  • Dave Krieger of the Rocky Mountain News analyzes whether the Rockies could afford to re-sign Holliday.  He believes they could, but doesn’t expect them to go past five years.
  • Renck sees Clint Barmes as the starting second baseman heading into ’09.  Barmes could earn around $1.7MM as a first-time arbitration player.
  • Manager Clint Hurdle admitted his starters are more like #2-5s, so it’d be perfect to add a #1 and push them all back.  #1 starters are hard to come by, of course.
  • Yorvit Torrealba isn’t happy as a backup but the Rockies aren’t looking to trade him.  Meanwhile Willy Taveras is a non-tender candidate.
  • The Rockies hope to re-sign free agent Glendon Rusch.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Redding, Laird, Wolf

By Tim Dierkes | July 25, 2008 at 8:53am CDT

Fresh column from Ken Rosenthal.

  • The Rockies, six games out in the NL West, could certainly become buyers.  They offered Clint Barmes for Jeremy Guthrie and were turned down, and continue to monitor Bronson Arroyo and Tim Redding.  Closer Brian Fuentes still seems likely to be traded though (the demand: top of the line prospect and a secondary player).
  • Rosenthal cautions us against judging the Pirates’ new regime too quickly.  The deadline will be a good test for them.
  • The Yankees definitely have interest in Rangers catcher Gerald Laird, but haven’t asked the Royals about Miguel Olivo.
  • The Astros are unlikely to flip Randy Wolf before the deadline, partially due to lack of interest.

Rockies Rumors: Fuentes, Barmes, Taveras

By Tim Dierkes | July 18, 2008 at 2:01pm CDT

Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post has a handful of Rockies rumors today.

  • Saunders believes the Phillies’ spent too much prospect capital on Joe Blanton to be able to acquire Brian Fuentes.  He says the Rays, Yankees, and Mets are still in the mix for Fuentes.
  • The Rays are interested in two other Rockies: Clint Barmes and Willy Taveras.  Unexpected targets…what do you think?  Would Barmes be an upgrade at shortstop?

More Rosenthal’s Latest

By Nat Boyle | May 4, 2008 at 10:39am CDT

Slow day for rumors, and yet Ken Rosenthal gets two posts!  No surprise there.  This time from his nifty sidebar Notes of Importance:

  • With John Smoltz returning as the closer, the Braves will be exploring trades for a starter.  Rosenthal says Atlanta could afford to give up prospects but won’t overpay.  MLBTR covered this a couple days ago.
  • Doing his best Monty Python, Rosenthal looks on the bright of life and sees the Troy Tulowitzki injury as an opportunity for Clint Barmes to rebuild his trade value.  If he can produce anywhere near the level of his 80+ games in ’05 then Barmes could generate a lot of interest.  If not, then we’ll continue to mention venison whenever Barmes comes up in conversation.  I think Barmes has a lot of proving to do to be looked at favorably by scouts as he’d become a bit of a liability for the Rockies both in the field and at the plate.
  • At the moment, the Nationals are carrying three catchers: Paul Lo Duca, Johnny Estrada, and Wil Nieves.  Lo Duca is off the DL and returning to starting.  Estrada is making $1.25MM and could be released, suggest Rosenthal.  Nieves, however, signed with the Nats for less money over the Yankees in the offseason, hoping for a better opportunity.  If the Nats put him on waivers, the Yankees – who wanted to retain Nieves – may indeed claim him if they view him as a better option than Chad Moeller.

Rockies Rumblings: Barmes, Sullivan, Podsednik

By Aaron Shinsano | March 16, 2008 at 7:35pm CDT

While talking to reporters Saturday, Rockies General manager Dan O’Dowd tried to make it clear he has no plans to trade infielder Clint Barmes.  His name recently surfaced in rumors with the Angels and Orioles.

However, according to the Denver Post, O’Dowd’s reaction was decidedly less definitive regarding the possibility of dealing reserve outfielder Cory Sullivan. Why? It’s likely due to the torrid spring of Scott Podsednik, who on Saturday made a "full tilt, horizontal to the ground, fully extended" diving catch (this according to manager Clint Hurdle) to rob Rangers’ DH Jason Botts of an hit.

This spring Podsednik leads the Rockies in steals, swiping six in seven attempts. He’s also getting on base at a .529 clip. Can Pods make a return to his 2005 form and make the Rockies? One would think he’d at least help fill the speed void left by the departure of Kaz Matsui.

Aaron Shinsano writes for East Windup Chronicle.
