Orioles Designate Eveland For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 27, 2012 at 2:16pm CDT

The Orioles announced that they designated left-hander Dana Eveland for assignment. The move creates roster space for Miguel Socolovich on the 25-man roster.

Eveland, 28, has appeared in 14 games for the Orioles this season, including two starts and 12 relief appearances. He has a 4.73 ERA with 5.0 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 32 1/2 innings. This marks the third time this year the Orioles have designated Eveland for assignment.

Outrighted To Triple-A: Dana Eveland

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 16, 2012 at 2:24pm CDT

The latest outright assignments from around MLB…

  • Dana Eveland cleared waivers and the Orioles outrighted him to Triple-A Norfolk, Steve Melewski of MASNsports.com reports (on Twitter). The Orioles designated the 28-year-old left-hander for assignment two days ago after he posted a 4.73 ERA with 5.0 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 32 1/3 innings. Eveland has already started six games for Norfolk this year.

Orioles Designate Eveland, Outright Paulino

By Mike Axisa | July 14, 2012 at 12:08pm CDT

The Orioles have designated Dana Eveland for assignment and outrighted Ronny Paulino to Triple-A, the team announced. The moves create room on the roster for Miguel Socolovich and Taylor Teagarden. Paulino can refuse the assignment and become a free agent, but he would forfeit the remainder of his $1MM salary.

Eveland, 28, made two starts and a dozen relief appearances for Baltimore this season. He pitched to a 4.73 ERA with 5.0 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 32 1/3 innings. His 2.21 ERA in 36 2/3 Triple-A innings earned him a call-up in the first place. The 31-year-old Paulino has hit .254/.266/.302 in 64 plate appearances for the O's this season while missing time with a fractured toe.

Quick Hits: Garza, Eveland, Wright, Beckett, Brewers

By Mike Axisa | May 12, 2012 at 10:40pm CDT

Here's the latest from around the league as Saturday turns into Sunday…

  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.com (video link) says talks between the Cubs and Matt Garza about a potential contract extension are going "very well." Jeff Samardzija's emergence has the club excited about possibly having two power righties in the rotation long-term.
  • The Orioles are expected to designate Dana Eveland for assignment tomorrow, reports Rich Dubroff of CSNBaltimore.com (on Twitter). Eveland made a spot start earlier this week and the move would create room on the roster for outfield prospect Xavier Avery, who will be called up.
  • Adam Rubin of ESPN New York explains why the Mets must sign David Wright to a long-term extension. The team holds a $16MM club option for their third baseman for 2013 and he'll become a free agent after that season.
  • MLB.com's Mike Bauman says the Red Sox have not gotten what they've paid for out of Josh Beckett. The right-hander signed a four-year, $68MM contract early in 2010.
  • “Stable management with good leadership is what you look for in companies,” said Brewers owner Mark Attanasio to Tyler Kepner of The New York Times about his front office. GM Doug Melvin and manager Ron Roenicke recently received contract extensions.

Outrighted: Neal, Hamren, Eveland, Rodriguez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 5, 2012 at 3:16pm CDT

Teams are clearing 40-man roster space for non-roster invitees who’ve made Opening Day rosters, so we’ve had a flurry of outright assignments in recent days. Here are the details via MLB.com’s transactions page…

  • Indians outfielder Thomas Neal, who was designated for assignment yesterday, has cleared waivers, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com (Twitter link). The Indians outrighted him to Triple-A.
  • The Padres announced that right-hander Erik Hamren cleared outright waivers. The Padres have assigned him to Double-A and now have an open spot on their 40-man roster.
  • The Orioles announced that they outrighted left-hander Dana Eveland to Triple-A after he cleared waivers. They had designated him for assignment last week.
  • The Mets outrighted Armando Rodriguez to Binghamton after he cleared outright waivers. The right-hander pitched at Class A in 2011, posting a 3.96 ERA in 16 starts.
  • The Cubs outrighted Frankie De La Cruz to Triple-A Iowa. They had claimed the 28-year-old right-hander off of waivers from the Brewers less than a month ago. De La Cruz spent most of last year as a starter at Triple-A, where he had a 3.88 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 137 innings.
  • The Indians outrighted Rick VandenHurk to Triple-A. They had designated him for assignment soon after claiming him on waivers.

Quick Hits: Lannan, Payrolls, Moyer, Eveland

By Mike Axisa | April 4, 2012 at 10:38pm CDT

Here are some links from around the league as Wednesday turns into Thursday…

  • John Lannan requested a trade earlier tonight, but MLB.com's Bill Ladson hears the Nationals aren't close to making a deal. They've talked to at least 20 teams about the southpaw, but his $5MM salary is a sticking point. Washington wants prospects or bench players in return.
  • Unsurprisingly, the Yankees top baseball with a $197.9MM payroll according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (Twitter links). It's their lowest payroll since 2007. The Padres bring up the rear at $53.9MM.
  • Nightengale reports (on Twitter) that Jamie Moyer will earn $1.1MM with the Rockies this season. The 49-year-old made the club after signing a minor league deal this winter.
  • Orioles GM Dan Duquette said there is no update on Dana Eveland, according to Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com (on Twitter). The left-hander was designated for assignment last week and they are still going through the process.
  • The Orioles are expected to acquire Chris Robinson, reports Melewski (on Twitter). The catcher hit .316/.345/.396 in 240 plate appearances while in the Cubs' farm system last year. He is now listed on the roster of Baltimore's Triple-A affilliate.

AL East Links: Rays, Epstein, O’s, Eveland, DePaula

By Mark Polishuk | March 29, 2012 at 10:21pm CDT

Blue Jays prospect Anthony Gose stole second, third and home all during the eighth inning of the Jays' 3-2 win over the Red Sox today in Grapefruit League action.  The young outfielder will begin the season in the minors but he's definitely drawing attention — Baseball America named Gose as baseball's 39th-best prospect in its preseason rankings.

Some news from around the AL East….

  • With B.J. Upton and Sam Fuld starting the season on the DL, the Rays are looking for outfield help, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link).
  • The Red Sox and Cubs seemed to have completed the compensation package for Theo Epstein's move to Chicago earlier today, but Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald hears from a team source that the Sox aren't quite satisfied.  Chris Carpenter underwent elbow surgery on Wednesday and while the Red Sox believe the Cubs gave up Carpenter with no knowledge of any injury problems, Boston "is weighing its options" about whether the matter should be revisited.
  • Dan Duquette told reporters (including Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun) that before Spring Training ends, the Orioles "have a few player contracts we need to resolve in camp, and we have had some tertiary trade discussions.”
  • Connelly thinks Duquette will try to trade Dana Eveland (designated for assignment earlier today) if the Orioles think the southpaw will get claimed on waivers.  Eveland, for his part, tells Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com (Twitter link) that he will accept a minor league assignment if he clears waivers and the O's wish to keep him.
  • Rafael DePaula passed his physical and his Yankees contract is now official, reports Ben Badler of Baseball America.  The right-hander initially signed a $500K deal with New York in November 2010 but his attempt to get a visa was delayed since DePaula used to play under a false identity and was suspended by Major League Baseball in 2009.

Orioles Designate Dana Eveland For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 29, 2012 at 1:39pm CDT

The Orioles announced that they designated left-hander Dana Eveland for assignment. The move creates 40-man roster space for infield prospect Zelous Wheeler, who was claimed off of waivers from the Brewers in a corresponding move.

The Orioles acquired Eveland from the Dodgers in December and agreed to terms with him on a one-year, $750K deal later on that month. The 28-year-old spent part of the 2011 season with the Dodgers, posting a 3.03 ERA with 4.9 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in 29 2/3 innings. He spent most of the season starting at Triple-A Albuquerque, where he posted a 4.38 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 154 innings.
