Minor Moves: Nickeas, Lewis, Bonine

By Mike Axisa | November 6, 2012 at 9:22pm CDT

Earlier today we linked to a list of all 549 players to become minor league free agents this winter, and now let's recap some other minor moves…

  • Catcher Mike Nickeas and outfielder Fred Lewis have both elected free agency after being removed from the 40-man roster by the Mets, reports Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. The 29-year-old Nickeas hit .174/.242/.299 in 122 plate appearances this year while the 31-year-old Lewis hit .150/.320/.150 in just 25 plate appearances.
  • The Diamondbacks have signed right-hander Eddie Bonine to a split contract, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). The is coming off Tommy John surgery and will earn $500K in the big leagues. Bonine owns a career 4.74 ERA and was originally drafted by D'Backs GM Kevin Towers during his Padres days.

Outrighted: Orr, Lerud, Lewis

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 18, 2012 at 2:52pm CDT

We’ll keep track of the day’s outright assignments right here…

  • The Phillies announced that they outrighted infielder Pete Orr and catcher Steven Lerud off of their 40-man roster. Orr, 33, appeared in 35 games for the team, playing second and third base while posting a .772 OPS. Lerud, 28, appeared in three contests this past season. The Phillies now have 37 players on their 40-man.
  • The Mets outrighted outfielder Fred Lewis to the minor leagues, according to the transactions page at CBSSports.com. The seven-year MLB veteran appeared in 18 games for New York this past season, playing all three outfield positions. A Mets official told Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com that Lewis plans to become a free agent. The 31-year-old hasn't yet filed the formal paperwork, but will become a free agent once he does so.

Mets Sign Fred Lewis, Brad Emaus

By Mike Axisa | April 25, 2012 at 6:44pm CDT

The Mets have signed outfielder Fred Lewis and infielder Brad Emaus to minor league contracts, the team announced (on Twitter). Both players were assigned to Triple-A Buffalo.

Lewis, 31, was released by the Indians earlier this month. He posted a .230/.321/.317 line in 210 plate appearances for the Reds last year, but he spent time on the disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle. Lewis played both corner outfield positions for Cincinnati, and he has a track record of success against right-handed pitching (.780 career OPS).

Emaus, 26, opened last season with the Mets as a Rule 5 Draft pick. He hit .162/.262/.162 in 42 plate appearances before being returned to the Blue Jays in mid-April. Toronto traded Emaus to the Rockies soon thereafter, and he went on to hit .313/.389/.564 in 186 plate appearances with Colorado's Triple-A affiliate.

Indians Release Fred Lewis

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 2, 2012 at 1:26pm CDT

The Indians released outfielder Fred Lewis, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian (on Twitter). They had signed Lewis to a minor league contract in January.

Lewis posted a .230/.321/.317 line in 210 plate appearances for Cincinnati last year, but he spent time on the disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle. The 31-year-old played both corner outfield positions for the Reds, who signed him for $900K. Lewis, a left-handed hitter, has a track record of success against right-handed pitching (.780 career OPS).

AL Central Links: Lillibridge, Guerra, Indians, Inge

By Mark Polishuk | March 21, 2012 at 10:23pm CDT

It was on this day in 1968 that the Royals officially became the Royals, as the new expansion franchise officially announced its name a year before taking the field.  The name was inspired by both the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League and Kansas City's annual "American Royal" horse show.

Here's the latest from the AL Central…

  • Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik "would love" to have Brent Lillibridge but knows the White Sox aren't going to trade him, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
  • Right-hander Deolis Guerra is the last player from the Johan Santana trade still with the Twins, and Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune looks at how Guerra has revitalized his career after a move to the bullpen.
  • Felix Pie and Ryan Spilborghs can each opt out of their minor league contracts with the Indians on April 3, tweets MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.  Fred Lewis, another non-roster invitee, can opt out on June 1.
  • Brandon Inge is going through another year of change as he tries to hold onto his spot on the Tigers' roster by moving to second base, writes Scott Miller of CBS Sports.
  • Andy Oliver's struggles don't make it any more likely that the Tigers will look outside the organization for a fifth starter, writes MLB.com's Jason Beck.  Duane Below and Drew Smyly are still contenders for the job and the Nationals' John Lannan, the most plausible trade candidate, may stay in Washington due to Chien-Ming Wang's hamstring injury.

AL Central Links: Indians, Ray, Lewis, Accardo

By Mike Axisa | February 4, 2012 at 10:00pm CDT

Two years ago today, the Twins signed Orlando Hudson to a one-year contract worth $5MM. He hit .268/.338/.372 in 126 games for Minnesota, then signed a two-year, $11.5MM deal with the Padres after the season. Here's the latest from the AL Central…

  • "We spent a lot of time trying to identify guys that we felt could come in and win spots," said Indians GM Chris Antonetti to Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. "If they didn't win spots, they could provide quality alternatives for us." Cleveland has signed 20 players to minor league deals this offseason, including Dan Wheeler, Jose Lopez, and Ryan Spilborghs.
  • Within the same piece, Hoynes reports that Chris Ray can opt out of his minor league deal with the Indians on April 3rd. Fred Lewis and Jeremy Accardo can opt out of their contracts on June 1st.
  • Baseball America's Ben Badler reports that Ramon Hernandez Jorrin's contract with the Royals is worth $500K. We first heard that Kansas City had signed the 22-year-old Cuban outfielder earlier this week.

Indians Sign Fred Lewis

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 19, 2012 at 11:13am CDT

The Indians announced that they signed outfielder Fred Lewis to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to MLB Spring Training. The club also confirmed that it has signed Jeremy Accardo to a minor league deal.

Lewis posted a .230/.321/.317 line in 210 plate appearances last year, but he spent time on the disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle. The 31-year-old played both corner outfield positions for the Reds, who signed him for $900K. Lewis elected free agency in the fall after the Reds outrighted him off of their roster. Lewis has a track record of success against right-handed pitching (.780 career OPS), though Cleveland's lineup already features a number of left-handed bats.

Fred Lewis, Chad Reineke Elect Free Agency

By Mark Polishuk | October 27, 2011 at 5:36pm CDT

Fred Lewis and Chad Reineke have elected free agency, according to Reds assistant director of media relations Jamie Ramsey.  Both players made their decision earlier in October.

Lewis signed a one-year, $900K deal with Cincinnati in January and looked to add some left-handed hitting depth to the Reds' outfield.  Lewis, however, hit .230/.321/.317 in 210 plate appearances this season, with all but 13 of those PAs coming against right-handed pitching.  He was also caught five times in seven steal attempts and spent time on the DL with an oblique injury.

Reineke, 29, appeared in just two games with the Reds last season and has seven Major League appearances (five of them starts) to his name over three seasons.  The right-hander re-signed with Cincinnati last year after entering free agency, so don't be surprised to see Reineke ink another minor league deal with the Reds sometime this winter.  Reineke had a 3.84 ERA in 25 games (22 starts) with Triple-A Louisville in 2011.

Outrighted To Triple-A: Richardson, Quintanilla

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 1, 2011 at 3:40pm CDT

The latest players to get outrighted to Triple-A…

  • The Braves outrighted left-hander Dustin Richardson to Triple-A after he cleared waivers, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (on Twitter). Richardson, 27, has spent the season at Triple-A, where he has a 4.79 ERA with 9.3 K/9 and 6.1 BB/9 in 62 innings.
  • The Rangers announced that they outrighted Omar Quintanilla to Triple-A (Twitter link). The 29-year-old has spent most of the season at Round Rock , where he has a .298/.369/.452 line in 234 plate appearances.
  • Fred Lewis cleared waivers and the Reds outrighted him to Triple-A, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Lewis has a .230/.321/.317 line since signing a $900K deal with the Reds in January. He has played both corner outfield positions and spent time on the disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle.

NL Central Notes: Reds, Friedman, McCutchen

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 4, 2011 at 2:28pm CDT

Links from the NL Central, before Pirates starter Kevin Correia pitches against his former teammates in San Diego…

  • The Reds signed left-handed reliever James Adkins and catcher James Skelton to minor league deals, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America (on Twitter). Adkins, 25, has a 4.76 ERA with 7.0 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 in parts of five minor league seasons. Skelton, also 25, has a .267/.396/.368 line in parts of seven minor league seasons.
  • The Reds also activated Fred Lewis from the disabled list and optioned Jeremy Hermida to Triple-A, according to the Associated Press (via the Boston Herald).
  • The father of Rays executive VP Andrew Friedman is involved with a group that has interest in buying the Astros, but Friedman says those dealings don’t impact his job in Tampa Bay, according to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times.
  • Andrew McCutchen left no doubt that he wants to continue playing for the Pirates when speaking to Jared Macdonald of The Good Point. "I plan on being here, that's the mindset. This is where I want to be, " he said. "I don't want to go anywhere, and I'm going to be here for as long as they want me to be here." The Pirates are discussing an extension with McCutchen, though no agreement appears imminent.
