Mets Sign Fred Lewis, Brad Emaus

The Mets have signed outfielder Fred Lewis and infielder Brad Emaus to minor league contracts, the team announced (on Twitter). Both players were assigned to Triple-A Buffalo.

Lewis, 31, was released by the Indians earlier this month. He posted a .230/.321/.317 line in 210 plate appearances for the Reds last year, but he spent time on the disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle. Lewis played both corner outfield positions for Cincinnati, and he has a track record of success against right-handed pitching (.780 career OPS).

Emaus, 26, opened last season with the Mets as a Rule 5 Draft pick. He hit .162/.262/.162 in 42 plate appearances before being returned to the Blue Jays in mid-April. Toronto traded Emaus to the Rockies soon thereafter, and he went on to hit .313/.389/.564 in 186 plate appearances with Colorado's Triple-A affiliate.

Red Sox Acquire Brad Emaus

The Red Sox acquired infielder Brad Emaus from the Rockies for a player to be named later or cash considerations, the Rockies announced. He'll provide Boston with insurance at second and third.

The Mets selected Emaus from the Blue Jays in the 2010 Rule 5 draft and returned him to Toronto the following April. The Blue Jays then flipped Emaus to the Rockies, who assigned him to Triple-A. The 25-year-old posted a .313/.389/.564 line in 186 plate appearances for the Rockies' top affiliate last year after struggling through 14 games with the Mets.

East Notes: Beato, Ibanez, Emaus, Hulett

Here are some items of note and musings coming out of the East divisions as Phillies interim closer Jose Contreras hits the DL …

  • Mets reliever Pedro Beato, a Rule 5 draftee this offseason, is pitching well, writes Thomas Boorstein of MLB.com. "I've been impressed ever since he walked into camp," Mets manager Terry Collins said. Earlier this week, the Mets returned second baseman Brad Emaus – their other Rule 5 pick – to the Blue Jays, who flipped him in turn to the Rockies, but it looks like Beato has a good shot of sticking with the Mets throughout the season.
  • Phillies outfielder Raul Ibanez is struggling, as is Philly's lineup on the whole, and David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News wonders how long the Phils will continue to start Ibanez. Should the Phils choose to divvy up starts between John Mayberry Jr., Ben Francisco and Domonic Brown, it would be interesting to see whether they would look into trading the 39-year-old. Ibanez is past his prime, sure, but he posted a triple-slash of .272/.347/.552 as recently as two years ago, and his contract expires at season's end, so he could draw interest at a cheap price. However, he does have no-trade protection.
  • The Blue Jays will place second baseman Aaron Hill on the DL, writes Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com. We'll never know the answer, but I wonder whether the Jays would have held onto Emaus to fill in briefly with Hill, Jayson Nix, and Edwin Encarnacion being banged up. Of course, it seems pretty clear that the Jays had made the decision that Emaus didn't factor into their plans, but they are stretched thin now, as John McDonald and Mike McCoy started at third and second base, respectively, on Sunday.
  • The Nationals signed infielder Tug Hulett to a minor league contract, according to NBC Sports. Hulett last appeared in the big leagues with the Royals in 2009. He was with the Rockies earlier this season but was let go after Colorado acquired Emaus.

Rockies Acquire Brad Emaus

The Rockies have acquired Brad Emaus from the Blue Jays in exchange for right-hander Chris Malone according to the team (on Twitter). Toronto will also receive a player to be named or cash considerations, tweets Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com.

Emaus is suddenly well-traveled, joining his third team of the week; the Mets returned him to Toronto as a Rule 5 Draft player just yesterday. The 25-year-old infielder hit .162/.262/.162 in 42 plate appearances with the Mets before they cut ties with him. Colorado can send him to the minors without having to pass him through waivers since the Rule 5 Draft rules no longer apply.

Malone, 27, was not considered one of the Rockies top 30 prospects in the 2011 edition of Baseball America's Prospect Handbook. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 36th round of the 2003 draft, but he joined the Rockies after a 2008 stint in an independent league. He owns a 6.8 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 63 2/3 relief innings (4.10 ERA) with Colorado's Double-A affiliate over the last year and change.

Jays Accept Brad Emaus Back From Mets

The Blue Jays have accepted infielder Brad Emaus back from the Mets, tweets ESPNNewYork's Adam Rubin.  New York designated Emaus, a Rule 5 pick from Toronto, for assignment on Tuesday and since Emaus cleared waivers, the Mets had to offer him back to the Jays for $25K or work out a trade to keep him.  Now that the Jays have taken Emaus back, he has been assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Emaus won the second base job out of Spring Training for the Mets, but was DFA'ed after posting a .424 OPS in 42 plate appearances.  Emaus, 25, was an 11th-round pick of the Jays in the 2007 amateur draft and he has a .276/.364/.426 line in four minor league seasons.

Mets Designate Brad Emaus For Assignment

The Mets designated infielder Brad Emaus for assignment and recalled Justin Turner, tweets David Lennon of Newsday.  Emaus, a Rule 5 pick from the Blue Jays, earned the second base job out of Spring Training but only received 42 plate appearances to establish himself.  If he's not traded or claimed in the next ten days, the Mets have to offer him back to the Blue Jays (or work out a trade to keep him in the organization).  If another team picks up Emaus, they'll still be subject to the Rule 5 restriction of keeping him in the Majors all year.

Emaus, 25, hit .290/.397/.476 in 534 plate appearances for the Blue Jays' Double and Triple-A clubs last year, playing second and third base.

Heyman On Young, Emaus, Rays, Wilson, Melky

The Rangers were close to sending Michael Young to the Rockies for two young players before the season, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com. The deal didn’t go through, but the Rangers appear to have assured the Rockies that they’ll have  the first chance to acquire Young if he becomes available once again. Here are the rest of Heyman’s rumors:

  • One GM told Heyman that Mets Rule 5 selection Brad Emaus looks like a Quadruple A player.
  • The Rays could have interest in adding a hitter now that Manny Ramirez isn’t around and Heyman suggests Chris Davis would be a fit. I wrote last month that the Rays are one team that could have interest in the first baseman if the Rangers make him available.
  • C.J. Wilson could ask for $82.5MM on his next contract, as Heyman points out. The left-hander hits free agency after the season and could compare himself to A.J. Burnett and John Lackey in negotiations with the Rangers and/or other clubs.
  • Alex Rodriguez worked out with Melky Cabrera this offseason and “begged” the Yankees to sign the outfielder to no avail.
  • The Orioles are “very high” on Jake Arrieta, the 25-year-old who made 18 starts as a rookie in 2010 and remains in Baltimore’s rotation.

Mets Not Yet Ready To Cut Ties With Emaus

Of the 19 players selected in December's Rule 5 Draft, only a handful made it through Spring Training and remained with their new club when the season began. One such player is Brad Emaus of the Mets (formerly of the Blue Jays), and manager Terry Collins told Newday's David Lennon that the team is going to give him the chance to develop into an everyday second baseman.

"When Brad Emaus made this club, there were some things discussed, and one of them is to give him a legitimate chance," said the skipper, who spoke with GM Sandy Alderson about Emaus on Friday. "Putting him in and out of the lineup — we're not going to get answers out of that, so I got him back in there."

Emaus has appeared in 12 of the team's first 13 games, but he's started just eight of them and only one in the last week as Daniel Murphy gets more playing time. The Mets also acknowledged that Emaus is being given greater leeway given his status as a Rule 5 Draft pick, since he must first clear waivers and be offered back to Toronto before he could be sent to the minors.

In 34 plate appearances, the 25-year-old is hitting just .200/.294/.200 with seven strikeouts and three GIDP's. Emaus did hit .290/.397/.476 with 15 homers and 13 steals between Double and Triple-A last year, so he certainly has offensive potential. Baseball America ranked him as New York's 21st best prospect in their Prospect Handbook.

Heyman On Emaus, Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers

In a column for SI.com, Jon Heyman discusses the new-look Rays, examining the team's chances in a competitive AL East. While one Rays person candidly acknowledges "we've got a lot of holes," the general consensus around baseball is that it would be a mistake to discount the defending division champs. Here are a few other highlights from Heyman:

Alderson On Perez, Castillo, Beato, Emaus, Reyes

Mets GM Sandy Alderson held a blogger conference call today, and Metsblog.com's Michael Baron has the transcript.  Here are some of the hot stove-related notes…

  • Fan sentiment "came into play" in Luis Castillo's release, Alderson said.  The Mets "became aware about the sentiment in New York for [Castillo and Oliver Perez]….It's difficult to overcome that, so you evaluate player performance against presumption in the minds of the fans."  In Perez's case, Alderson said the southpaw just didn't pitch well enough to make the roster, so the fans' thoughts were moot.
  • Alderson says if the Mets are in contention, the club will have the money available to add a player if necessary.
  • Alderson thinks his team's farm system is underrated but he says the Mets "need to be more aggressive and successful in developing players out of the draft."
  • "There is a very good possibility we will keep both our Rule 5 picks" Alderson said, in regards to Pedro Beato and Brad Emaus.  The GM said that Emaus' Rule 5 status was a major reason the team gave him every chance to win the second base job this spring.  "If he was not a Rule 5 draftee, he wouldn’t have presented the immediacy that he does," Alderson said.  "If he’s not the starting second baseman, I’m not sure how much he helps us in a bench role. At least at the outset, you’re going to give him every opportunity."
  • If the Mets have a reduced payroll next season, they should still be able to re-sign Jose Reyes if they wish, given the number of contracts the team has coming off the books this winter.
