Yunel Escobar Rumors: Tuesday

By Steve Adams | December 4, 2012 at 5:18pm CDT

We received a flurry of Yunel Escobar rumors yesterday once it was revealed that the Marlins were shopping their recently acquired infielder. Specifically, the Athletics had ongoing discussions with the Fish surrounding the controversial shortstop. We'll keep track of today's Escobar rumors with the newest info up top…

  • The Rays are still in on Escobar, tweets Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.  The Marlins are getting closer to trading the shortstop, but the A's, Yankees, and Cardinals remain involved.

Earlier updates:

  • Despite the fact that they could use a defensive upgrade at shortstop, the Tigers aren't interested in Escobar, or at least don't view him as a fit, writes MLB.com's Jason Beck.
  • The A's, Yankees, and Rays are the most likely teams for Escobar, reports Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.  Talks with the A's have centered around Brad Peacock or Grant Green, while talks with the other clubs involve younger minor leaguers.
  • There's some conflicting info out there on the Yankees' interest in Escobar. Reports yesterday suggested that the Yankees had inquired, and Jayson Stark of ESPN.com tweets that New York is "definitely in" on the shortstop. However, ESPN's Buster Olney tweets that the Yankees aren't in the mix.
  • The other clubs that are "definitely in" on Escobar, according to Stark, are the A's, Cubs, and Rays.

Athletics Sign Grant Green

By Tim Dierkes | August 17, 2009 at 11:00pm CDT

The Athletics signed 13th overall pick Grant Green, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.  Green received a $2.75MM bonus, says Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus.  Green, a shortstop out of USC, is a Scott Boras client.  Click here for MLB.com's scouting report.

Odds And Ends: Cubans, Waivers, Indians, A’s

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 5, 2009 at 11:49am CDT

A few more links to look through…

  • ESPN.com's Jorge Arangure Jr. hears that Yasser Gomez, Yadel Marti and Juan Yasser Serrano, who are now free agents, will showcase their talents for major league teams this Friday.
  • Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer says Jamey Carroll and Carl Pavano, who will both become free agents after the year, will likely clear waivers.
  • Craig Brown at RoyalsAuthority.com says there's no way any team would claim Jose Guillen or Kyle Farnsworth. Gil Meche, on the other hand, would probably not clear waivers in Brown's opinion.
  • Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that A's first rounder Grant Green toured the Oakland Coliseum yesterday. His representative, Scott Boras, met with A's GM Billy Beane, who says he expects to sign Green.

Odds And Ends: Peavy, Acta, Harper

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 15, 2009 at 10:24am CDT

Some links for Monday morning…

  • Scott Miller of CBS Sports says the Padres made a mistake last offseason when they rejected the package the Braves offered for the now-injured Jake Peavy.
  • Chico Harlan of the Wahington Post goes through the pros and cons of firing Manny Acta. More than half of his readers don't think it's time for a firing yet.
  • ESPN.com's Jason A. Churchill says Bryce Harper will be the "clear No. 1 talent" if he's eligible for next year's draft, as planned.
  • Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the A's haven't started contract talks with their first round draft pick, Grant Green.
  • Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe asks his readers what the Red Sox should do with their excess pitching. We broke down several of their options last week, which Massarotti considers. He adds one of his own: Tim Wakefield could pitch out of the 'pen.

Draft Updates: Bonuses, Green, Sanchez, Epstein

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 9, 2009 at 11:13am CDT

The updates keep flowing in as the countdown to the draft continues…

  • Baseball America's Jim Callis reports that Tyler Matzek and Shelby Miller are among the players with large- even historic- demands.
  • Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reports that Angels scouting director Eddie Bane does not expect the Angels to see any of the players they draft make it to the majors this season.
  • Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star says "predraft buzz" has the Royals linked to college shortstop Grant Green.
  • MLB.com's Jen Langosch is "beginning to believe" the Pirates will select Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez with the fourth pick. Keith Law says they're considering him.
  • As Chuck Finder of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports, Sanchez wants to start playing and says he won't demand a large bonus.
  • Theo Epstein told Adam Kilgore of the Boston Globe that fans on the street will tell him who to draft. It may not be the NBA or NFL draft, but the MLB version is gaining prominence.
  • Epstein is proudest of selecting Jonathan Papelbon, back in 2003.
  • Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles are willing to spend on the draft and aren't afraid of choosing high school pitchers.
  • The Rockies, with three of the first 34 picks, "need to hit a home run" if you ask Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post. Tracy Ringolsby of Inside the Rockies says the team appears to be leaning towards pitcher Matt Hobgood.

Draft Update: Strasburg, Orioles, D’Backs

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 3, 2009 at 9:18am CDT

Here's the latest news on next week's draft:
  • Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Ben McDonald may meet Stephen Strasburg at the draft. It was 20 years ago, but McDonald was once the best pitching prospect anyone had ever seen and he had Scott Boras advising him, just like Strasburg.
  • Check out the comparison chart at the bottom of Nightengale's article to see why McDonald was just as highly touted as Strasburg is today.  Also, check out our Boras Blast From The Past feature on McDonald from April.
  • According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun the Orioles have scouted college shortstop Grant Green extensively, but it "appears likely" they'll pass and choose between the many high school and college arms that figure to be available when the O's select fifth.
  • To be as prepared as possible for the draft the D'Backs had their pro scouts look at amateur players and vice versa, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. Mike Leake and Bobby Borchering are two names to watch for the D'Backs.
  • MLB.com's Matthew Leach reports that the Cardinals could go for a younger player this year, as their upper-minors are well-stocked.
  • As Colin Dunlap of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports, Pitt infield prospect Chris Sedon will be in the dentist's chair getting a cavity filled during the draft because it was the only available appointment.
  • On ESPN radio Keith Law says "slot is dead" because ultimately the recommended bonuses from the commissioner's office are "just recommendations."
  • Even though Strasburg has leverage with the Nationals, Law says it's in his best interest to sign this year and predicts an eleventh hour agreement between the two sides.

Odds & Ends: Braves, Peavy, Mets, Sabathia

By Tim Dierkes | May 26, 2009 at 12:30pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports that Mike MacDougal left the Nationals' Triple A club via an out clause, but could remain with the organization if they decide to promote him to the Majors.
  • Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution speculates on some outfield options for the Braves.
  • According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Chris Duffy accepted the Brewers' assignment to Triple A.  Duffy was designated for assignment on May 22nd.
  • For some reason, Scott Boras weighed in on the Padres' attempt to trade Jake Peavy (talking to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune).  Boras suggested it might be a breach of contract, but Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod isn't as offended.  Barry Rozner of the Daily Herald has more from Axelrod, who said, "the entire process was unfair."
  • Howard Megdal of SNY campaigns for the Mets to acquire a passable shortstop, while retaining Ramon Castro and Brian Schneider as catchers.
  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo looks at the middle infielders in the upcoming draft.  And MLB.com's Lisa Winston has a column on Grant Green.
  • Talking to Jack Curry of the New York Times, C.C. Sabathia wondered about his six-year old son's possible high school future in New Jersey.  Sabathia can choose to opt out of his contract after the 2011 season.  Is this anything?  The kid will be going to high school in eight years or so, so the contract will be up regardless.  More telling might be Sabathia's comments to Jayson Stark earlier this month.

Heyman On Lee, Martinez, Green

By Tim Dierkes | May 15, 2009 at 12:47pm CDT

A look at the latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman…

  • Heyman addresses the issue of whether the Indians will trade staff ace Cliff Lee.  GM Mark Shapiro isn't thinking about it (not under consideration, according to Ken Rosenthal), and rival execs are divided.  Heyman says neither side made a contract extension proposal during the offseason.  The Indians will have Lee through 2010 once they exercise his option.
  • The Mets mulled calling up Fernando Martinez, but they'll stick to their plan of keeping him in Triple A until at least June.
  • The Orioles are "seriously considering" drafting USC shortstop Grant Green with their #5 pick.  However, the Padres are said to be eyeing Green at #3.

Possibilities For Padres At No. 3

By Tim Dierkes | May 14, 2009 at 5:05pm CDT

The Padres have the third overall pick in the June draft, and ESPN's Keith Law has info on their preferences:

Keith Law has learned that the Padres, owners of the No. 3 overall pick, are high on Cartersville High School (Ga.) CF Donavan Tate, USC SS Grant Green, Missouri RHP Kyle Gibson and Fort Worth Cats RHP Aaron Crow.

In a mock draft released today, Baseball America projected Green as San Diego's pick.

Both articles linked in this post require subscriptions to read fully.  As someone who devours tons of baseball information every day, I highly recommend subscribing to both Baseball America and ESPN Insider.  You can get three months at BA for $26, and a year of ESPN Insider for $40.
