Orioles Acquire Jai Miller

By Tim Dierkes | January 4, 2012 at 7:38am CDT

WEDNESDAY, 7:38am: The A's received $45K for Miller, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

TUESDAY, 1:06pm: The Orioles acquired outfielder Jai Miller from the Athletics for cash considerations, according to a press release.  Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said in a statement, "Jai Miller has the power, speed, base stealing skills and good athletic ability to be an asset in our outfield as he competes for a spot on our ballclub this spring."  With the Orioles' trade of Brandon Snyder to the Rangers, their 40-man roster remains full.

Miller, 26, hit .276/.368/.588 with 32 home runs in 475 Triple-A plate appearances this year, his fourth stint at the level.  He spent most of his time in center and right field.

Miller was originally drafted by the Marlins in the fourth round in 2003.  He was designated for assignment in April of 2010, claimed a few days later by the A's, designated again that same month, claimed by the Royals a few days later, and outrighted in November of 2010, at which point he signed back with the A's as a free agent.  The A's then designated Miller for assignment in late December of 2011 after trading Gio Gonzalez.

Athletics Designate Jai Miller For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | December 23, 2011 at 8:33pm CDT

The Athletics have designated Jai Miller for assignment according to a team press release. This move and the earlier Landon Powell move get Oakland's 40-man roster back down to 40 players following the Gio Gonzalez trade.

Miller, 27 in January, hit .276/.368/.588 with 32 homers and 16 steals in 475 plate appearances for the Athletics' Triple-A affiliate this season. He's a .235/.288/.368 career hitter in 73 big league plate appearances spread across the last four years. Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle says (on Twitter) that Miller had mentioned as an outfield candidate next year, so the team must be hoping he clears waivers.

  • The Twins signed 32-year-old outfielder/first baseman Jeff Bailey, reports Seth Stohs.  Bailey hit .289/.387/.462 with 12 home runs in 564 Triple-A plate appearances for the Diamondbacks' affiliate.
  • The Twins also signed infielder Chase Lambin, tweets Baseball America's Matt Eddy. The 31-year-old hit .252/.327/.414 with 15 homers in 548 plate appearances for the National's Triple-A affiliate in 2011. He has never played in the the big league, but did spend 2009 in Japan.
  • MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports that Micah Hoffpauir has signed a one-year deal with the Nippon Ham fighters. The 30-year-old hit .251/.312/.421 in 394 plate appearances with the Cubs over the last three seasons.
  • The Mariners have signed right-hander Justin Miller according to Eddy (via Twitter). In 24.1 innings with the Dodgers last year, the 33-year-old pitched to a 4.44 ERA with 11.1 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9. The Mariners are his ninth organization.
  • Seattle also signed shortstop Sean Kazmar, tweets Eddy. He hit .275/.326/.381 for San Diego's Triple-A affiliate this year, and saw some big league action with them back in 2008.
  • The Rays signed righty reliever Cory Wade, says Eddy (via Twitter). The 27-year-old had a 2.27 ERA with 6.4 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 in 71.1 innings for the Dodgers in 2008, but he missed most of 2009 and all of 2010 after having shoulder surgery.
  • Eddy tweets that the Athletics have signed outfielder Jai Miller. They lost him on a waiver claim to Kansas City back in April. The 25-year-old hit .252/.326/.490 in Triple-A last year, then .236/.300/.345 in 60 plate appearances with the Royals.

Royals Claim Lance Zawadzki

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 5, 2010 at 2:11pm CDT

The Royals claimed infielder Lance Zawadzki off of waivers from the Padres, according to a team press release. Kansas City outrighted Jai Miller to Triple-A and the outfielder will become a free agent tomorrow afternoon. It's the second consecutive day the Royals have made a waiver claim; GM Dayton Moore claimed Joaquin Arias from the Mets yesterday.

Zawadzki, 25, appeared in 20 games for the Padres in May and June. He spent most of the season in the upper minors, where he played second, third and short and batted .225/.291/.316. Miller, 25, batted .236/.300/.345 in 60 big league plate appearances this year. He has a .239/.322/.401 line in eight minor league seasons.

Royals Claim Jai Miller

By Tim Dierkes | April 26, 2010 at 2:18pm CDT

The Royals claimed outfielder Jai Miller off waivers from the Athletics, according to a team press release.  Miller was designated for assignment by the Marlins on April 3rd, claimed by the A's on the 8th, and designated again on the 22nd.  The Royals transferred Josh Fields to the 60-day DL to clear a spot.

Miller, 25, hit .289/.360/.510 in his second Triple A stint for the Marlins last year, playing right and center field.  The athletic outfielder could still be a late bloomer.

Jai Miller Designated For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | April 22, 2010 at 12:14pm CDT

The Athletics designated outfielder Jai Miller for assignment, tweets John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.  That's two DFAs this month for Miller, who was claimed off waivers by the A's from the Marlins on April 8th.

Miller, 25, hit .289/.360/.510 in his second Triple A stint for the Marlins last year, playing right and center field.  In his brief time with the Sacramento River Cats this year, Miller had four hits, three walks, and 19 strikeouts in 37 plate appearances.   Back in their '08 Handbook, Baseball America said his doubters wonder if "Miller isn't merely the next Reggie Abercrombie, a tools-laden player whose skills never fully transferred to the diamond."  Two years later, they wrote that "some in the organization still see him as a late bloomer with Mike Cameron characteristics."

Marlins Designate Miller, Martinez For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | April 3, 2010 at 6:02pm CDT

The Marlins have designated outfielder Jai Miller and righthander Cristhian Martinez for assignment, tweets MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. The moves open up 40-man roster spots for Mike Lamb and Jose Veras.

The 25-year-old Miller has one big league plate appearance to his credit, coming back in 2008. He's a .277/.354/.489 hitter in 888 Triple-A plate appearances, and is a threat to steal once he reaches base.

Martinez, 28, posted a 5.13 ERA and a 6.2 K/9 with a 2.7 BB/9 in 26.1 innings of relief for the Marlins last year. He's never spent a day in Triple-A, but his minor league walk rate is impressive at 1.8 BB/9.
