Quick Hits: Lewis, Maholm, Headley, Longoria, Lynn

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 23, 2012 at 11:19pm CDT

On this date three years ago left-hander Mark Buehrle pitched a perfect game against the Rays with an impressive effort punctuated by the most memorable catch of Dewayne Wise's career. Here are today's links…

  • Colby Lewis is expected to miss the rest of the season for the Rangers with a torn flexor tendon in his right arm, according to Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com. It seems logical that this will accelerate the Rangers' desire to add a starting pitcher. They've been linked to names such as Zack Greinke and Cole Hamels, and have very enticing trade chips thanks to their deep minor league system.
  • Cubs lefty Paul Maholm told Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that it'd be "ironic" for the Pirates to want him back at the deadline after letting him walk as a free agent (Sulia link). Maholm's next two starts are scheduled to come against his former teammates.
  • The Padres’ asking price for Chase Headley remains high, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports (on Twitter). The Pirates have discussed the third baseman with the Padres, according to Olney. The A's are interested, but remain reluctant to part with top prospects, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter).
  • Evan Longoria’s reign as the most valuable trade chip in baseball has ended, Dave Cameron of FanGraphs writes. Longoria still figures prominently on Cameron’s list of baseball's top assets, as expected.
  • Agent Bobby Barad has joined Excel Sports Management, Liz Mullen of the Sports Business Journal reports. Barad, formerly of TWC Sports Management, represents players such as Lance Lynn and Jerry Blevins. Check MLBTR’s Agency Database for updated data on which agents represent which players.

Outrighted: Bruce Billings

By Tim Dierkes | August 30, 2011 at 12:35pm CDT

The latest players outrighted to Triple-A…

  • The Athletics announced they've outrighted righty reliever Bruce Billings to open a 40-man roster spot for reliever Neil Wagner.  I first reported Wagner's impending call-up on Twitter on Monday.  Billings was the player the A's acquired in the June 30th Mark Ellis deal.  The A's also announced that Jerry Blevins cleared waivers and was optioned to Sacramento.

A’s Designate Jerry Blevins For Assignment

By Dan Mennella | August 27, 2011 at 6:03pm CDT

The Athletics have designated lefty Jerry Blevins for assignment, tweets Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

As with Blevins' previous three DFAs this season, he is removed from Oakland's 25-man roster but remains on its 40-man, so the move is procedural and does not expose him to other teams. Blevins was removed from the active roster to make room for Graham Godfrey, who was slated to start Game 2 of the Athletics' doubleheader in Boston.

Blevins has shuttled between Oakland and the minors for parts of five seasons, posting a 4.00 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 8.5 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9.

A’s Designate Jerry Blevins For Assignment

By Mark Polishuk | August 2, 2011 at 6:38pm CDT

The A's have designated left-hander Jerry Blevins for assignment, according to the team's official Twitter feed.  Adam Rosales was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move.  Credit the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser with the scoop, as she heard from Blevins himself (Twitter link) that he was on the move.

This is the third time Blevins has been DFA'ed this season and he hasn't been claimed due to his unique optional waivers situation.  The 27-year-old has a 3.93 ERA and an 8.3 K/9 ratio in 17 appearances with the Athletics this year but has struggled with his control — Blevins' 6.9 BB/9 rate is almost twice his career average.

Outrighted: Brazoban, Hottovy, Blevins

By Tim Dierkes | July 20, 2011 at 5:03pm CDT

The latest players to clear waivers and be outrighted…

  • The Diamondbacks announced that they have outrighted Yhency Brazoban to Triple-A in a press release. The 31-year-old right-hander struck out eight and walked four in six relief innings for Arizona over the last few weeks. He allowed eight hits and four runs.
  • Southpaw reliever Tommy Hottovy, designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Saturday, cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A, tweets ESPN's Gordon Edes.
  • Athletics lefty Jerry Blevins cleared waivers and is headed to Triple-A as well, tweets John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

A’s Designate Jerry Blevins For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 19, 2011 at 3:15pm CDT

The A's announced that they designated Jerry Blevins for assignment. The left-hander, who loses his 25-man roster spot to Guillermo Moscoso, remains on Oakland's 40-man roster, just as he did when Oakland designated him for assignment in May. The move is simply procedural and does not expose Blevins to other clubs.

The 27-year-old has a 3.86 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 7.7 BB/9 in 16 1/3 innings for Oakland this year. He has also logged 19 1/3 innings at Triple-A, where he has a 5.12 ERA with 10.7 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9. The former 17th round pick has appeared in parts of five seasons for Oakland.

Quick Hits: Herrera, Bautista, Blevins

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 23, 2011 at 10:36pm CDT

Today the Brewers claimed Danny Herrera from Cincinnati, the Reds optioned Edinson Volquez to the minors and Josh Hamilton homered in his return from the disabled list. The connection? Back in December of 2007, the Rangers sent Herrera and Volquez to Cincinnati for Hamilton. Here are the latest links from around the league…

  • The Brewers optioned Herrera to Triple-A Nashville and moved left-hander Manny Parra to the 60-day DL, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (on Twitter).
  • One Blue Jays person told Danny Knobler of CBSSports that Jose Bautista is “our Derek Jeter.” Bautista hit homer #19 today as the Blue Jays defeated Jeter’s Yankees.
  • Mike Axisa of River Ave. Blues points out that recently-designated southpaw Jerry Blevins could be an appealing option for the Yankees if they're looking for more upside than Randy Flores offers.
  • Earlier today, MLBTR's Tim Dierkes suggested that the Yankees are one of many contenders that could look for lefty relief.

Athletics Designate Jerry Blevins For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | May 23, 2011 at 12:09pm CDT

The Athletics designated lefty reliever Jerry Blevins for assignment, tweets the team.  The move opens a spot on the active roster for Josh Outman, who is scheduled to make his first Major League appearance in nearly two years tonight.

Blevins, 27, appeared in 15 games for the A's this year.  He struck out 13 but walked 13 in 14 1/3 innings.  In his career, he's handled lefties very well: a 10.3 K/9, 2.3 BB/9, and 0.83 HR/9 in 54 innings.  The A's should be able to find a trade partner within the next ten days.

Cubs Acquire Jason Kendall

By Tim Dierkes | July 16, 2007 at 7:51pm CDT

The Cubs made a deal tonight, sending catcher Rob Bowen and pitcher Jerry Blevins to the Athletics for Jason Kendall and cash. (ESPN keeps saying it was Sean Marshall going to Oakland, which is silly and not true).

Kendall had a respectable .758 OPS in June, but his bat has been anemic otherwise.  But as signified by the questionable Michael Barrett trade, the Cubs are looking for defense at catcher. (Incidentally, Jim Hendry acquired Barrett from Beane in December of ’03 for Damian Miller).  Kendall can certainly handle the pitching staff.  And it wouldn’t be shocking to see him hit a little bit back in the NL; he rarely strikes out and knows how to draw a walk.

The Cubs didn’t give up much here.  Bowen is a backup at best.  Blevins, a southpaw reliever, will turn 24 in September.  He’s been dominant in 53 innings between High A and Double A, but he’s not anyone’s idea of a top prospect.  I like the move for the Cubs.  As for Oakland, it gives them a chance to try Kurt Suzuki full-time for a few months as an audition for 2008.
