Jonny Gomes

Odds & Ends: Peavy, Gomes, Nolasco, Price

By | May 23, 2009 at 3:03pm CDT

Your Saturday afternoon links, with more to come…

  • JorgeSaysNo! reiterates that the Brewers are a "perfect fit" for Jake Peavy, and Craig Calcaterra of NBCSports.com's "Circling The Bases" believes Milwaukee will need to move quickly in order to land him.
  • As Mark Sheldon of MLB.com points out, Jonny Gomes is set to make his debut with the Reds this evening.  He showed good faith in the club when he accepted an assignment to Triple-A at the end of spring training, and that faith has now been rewarded.
  • Ricky Nolasco was demoted to Triple-A New Orleans this morning after beginning the season with a 9.07 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and 2-5 record.  R.J. Anderson of FanGraphs examines what the 26-year-old has been doing wrong.
  • David Price finally got the call.  He'll start Monday against the Indians and R.J. Anderson of DRaysBay highlights a few things to monitor.
  • Athletics Nation asks the question: "Where will the A's find greatness?"
  • As Tim noted earlier this week, there are now several ways to keep up with the action here on MLBTR.  You can join the Facebook fan page, follow us on Twitter, sign up for the RSS feed, and even get updates on your mobile phone.

Reds Rumors: Gomes, Jenkins, Catalanotto

By Tim Dierkes | April 8, 2009 at 4:15pm CDT

4:15pm: MLB.com's Mark Sheldon says Gomes accepted the minor league assignment.  Meanwhile, Jacque Jones was released.

8:31am: John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer has a few Reds notes.

  • Jonny Gomes still hasn't decided whether to accept his Triple A demotion or become a free agent.  Walt Jocketty will call Gomes' agent today.
  • The Reds are not currently in on Geoff Jenkins or Frank Catalanotto.  They prefer to add a righthanded bench bat, plus Jocketty said Catalanotto doesn't have a position.

Reds Cut Jonny Gomes

By Nat Boyle | April 5, 2009 at 10:55am CDT

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports the Reds have cut Jonny Gomes and offered him a spot in Triple-A. Fay says Gomes is a little surprised and unsure what to do next.

Gomes hit .250 in 44 at bats this spring, and led the Reds with 4 homeruns while knocking in 12 runs.

Mark Sheldon of MLB.com is "totally shocked" by this move. He notes that Paul Janish and lefty Daniel Herrera have made the team.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Pirates, Rays, Pettitte, Cubs, Dodgers, Gomes, Mauer, Cruz

By Cork Gaines | January 23, 2009 at 1:24pm CDT

On this date 28 years ago, the Red Sox traded Fred Lynn to the California Angels for Frank Tanana and Joe Rudi. After six seasons that included an MVP and six all-star appearances, the Red Sox were forced to trade Lynn when the front office failed to mail a new contract to Lynn by the mandated deadline. Without the new contract, Boston was faced with the possibility that Lynn would be declared a free agent (Carlton Fisk was declared a free agent for the same reason). The player’s association dropped their case when Lynn agreed to a contract extension with the Angels. With many of this year’s free agent class still waiting for contracts to be mailed, let’s take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • Bucco Blog sees an Adam LaRoche-Jonathan Sanchez trade as a "win-win deal."
  • DRays Bay would like to see the Tigers take either Troy Percival or Dan Wheeler off the Rays’ hands.
  • Mets Geek makes a case for the Mets signing Andy Pettitte.
  • Goat Riders of the Apocalypse are not worried that the Cubs have traded away yet another former top prospect.
  • Center Field isn’t buying that Jason Varitek didn’t know about the draft pick compensation as a result of his refusing arbitration.
  • Her Rays isn’t taking the loss of Rocco Baldelli well at all.
  • Dodger Thoughts doesn’t understand why the Dodgers keep spending money on veteran, offensively-challenged backup catchers that will never play.
  • Anaheim Angels all the way says the Reds replaced "90% of Adam Dunn" with Jonny Gomes and a very favorable contract. On Baseball and the Reds is not sure Gomes’ offense will offset his horrible defense and sees him as a decent platoon option.
  • UmpBump grades the Rays offseason favorably.
  • El Lefty Malo laments the contract of Dave Roberts and feels he is the type of player that would be forced to retire if he were a free agent this off-season.
  • Twins Geek speculates on what it would take to sign Joe Mauer to a long-term deal.
  • Bullpen Call sees only the Mets and Yankees as options for Juan Cruz.

Gomes Signs Minor League Deal With Reds

By | January 19, 2009 at 5:14pm CDT

Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times reports that outfielder Jonny Gomes has signed a minor league contract with the Reds.

The deal will pay him $600K in ’09 and provides $200K in performance-based incentives.  The Rays decided not to tender him a conract this offseason afer he hit just .182 with eight homers and 21 RBI in 77 games in ’08.  He’ll have a shot at some outfield at-bats with the Reds if he impresses this spring.  Gomes has flashed good power in the bigs in the past, and the Reds can control him for several years if he succeeds.

Odds and Ends: Bradley, Roberts, Cruz, Smoltz

By Tim Dierkes | January 9, 2009 at 10:40am CDT

Links for Friday…

  • David Chase looks at fantasy baseball’s top strikeout pitchers.
  • The third year of Milton Bradley’s contract turns into a club option if he has serious health problems this year.
  • Two players expected to attend the Brewers’ open tryout this month: Randall Simon and Mark Bellhorn.
  • Dave Cameron looks at the premium teams pay for proven closers.
  • Bobby Valentine comments on the Orioles’ Koji Uehara signing in Dan Connolly’s article.  Within that article Connolly suggests the trade market for Brian Roberts may be suffering because of Orlando Hudson’s availability on the free agent market.
  • The D’Backs wouldn’t be thrilled, but the Yankees could sign Juan Cruz and only surrender a fourth-round pick.
  • Pirates GM Neal Huntington said the team is looking at some comeback-type free agent outfielders.  Dejan Kovacevic guesses that Emil Brown, Craig Monroe, or Jonny Gomes could fit the bill.
  • The Red Sox designated knuckleballer Charlie Zink for assignment.
  • J.C. Bradbury believes the Braves were misleading with the public regarding their offer to John Smoltz.

Odds And Ends: Crisp, Spiezio, Lahey, Longoria

By Cork Gaines | April 12, 2008 at 2:06pm CDT

Here are a few notes from the MLBiverse…

  • Terry Francona sounds like a manager that is frustrated and wishes the Red Sox would go ahead and trade Coco Crisp. After starting Crisp for the second straight game, Francona said "The more [Jacoby Ellsbury] plays, the better he’s going to be, and I clearly feel that responsibility…I’m trying to balance [playing time] the best I can."
  • It only took a couple of weeks, but Scott Spiezio managed to mess up his latest opportunity with the Atlanta Braves. After failing to show to his AAA Richmond game "ready to play", Spiezio was released by the Braves.
  • Rule 5 pick Tim Lahey, who was DFA’d by the Phillies, cleared waivers and has been sent back to the Twins for $25K.
  • With Evan Longoria now in the majors, the Rays may be forced to trade Jonny Gomes or Eric Hinske (who is off to a hot start) in the next few weeks.

Cork Gaines writes for Rays Index and can be reached here.

Baldelli’s Hamstrings May Open Door For Lofton

By Michael Glab | March 8, 2008 at 10:38am CDT

With Rocco Baldelli appearing only twice in spring games this year, the Rays may consider reviving talks with free agent outfielder Kenny Lofton. Tampa Bay’s right field and fourth outfielder depth is light enough that they’ve begun to look at infielders Joel Guzman and Ben Zobrist at left and right field, respectively.

Ray’s manager Joe Maddon won’t even guess when Baldelli will return to full-time play. Baldelli is nursing sore hamstrings this spring. He’s expected to play right field, if he can run, and will split time with Cliff Floyd and Jonny Gomes at DH.

Given Floyd’s fragility, the Rays will be taking quite a chance if they depend on that combination.  Floyd has appeared in 150 games once in the last ten years. Baldelli appeared in 150 games in his rookie year but hasn’t in the three years since.
