Odds & Ends: Hart, Yankees, Baldelli, Ruiz

By Mike Axisa | January 29, 2010 at 9:18pm CDT

A few Friday night links…

  • The Brewers and Corey Hart appear headed to an arbitration hearing after negotiations reached an impasse, reports MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. Hart filed for $4.8MM, the team $4.15MM.
  • Chad Jennings of The Journal News spoke to a Yankees' executive about the possibility of bringing in some players on minor league deals, and was told “I wouldn’t say we’re done, but probably close to done.”
  • Four teams – including the Yankees, Rangers, and Mariners – are interested in Rocco Baldelli's services, reports Joe McDonald of The Providence Journal.
  • ESPN's Jorge Arangure tweets that Cuban first baseman Jose Julio Ruiz is now free to sign after being "unblocked" by the Office of Foreign Asset Control. In a second tweet, Arangure says that Ruiz is expected to command a multi-million dollar contract, and a few months ago we heard that the Red Sox and Tigers had some interest.
  • Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun reports that Mark Hendrickson passed his physical today, however his deal with the Orioles likely won't be made official until Monday because the league's offices are closed during the weekend.
  • MLB.com's Steve Gilbert says that the Diamondbacks and Edwin Jackson are playing close attention to how Wandy Rodriguez's arbitration case unfolds.
  • The Rockies and Cardinals are in the mix for Felipe Lopez, tweets SI.com's Jon Heyman. The 29-year-old had a higher OBP (.383) and SLG (.427) than either Orlando Hudson or Orlando Cabrera in 2009.
  • MLB.com's Bill Ladson says that the Nationals have spoken to John Smoltz's agent recently, but there is no progress to report and they aren't willing to break the bank for him (both links open in Twitter).
  • Meanwhile, Ladson also tweets that the team views the newly signed Miguel Batista as a starter for the back of their rotation, as opposed to an arm for the bullpen.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com says (via Twitter) that Craig Monroe isn't ready to retire to just yet. Over the last three years, Monroe has hit .215/.272/.377 with 23 homers in 693 plate appearances for four teams.

Pirates DFA Romulo Sanchez

By | April 1, 2009 at 6:40pm CDT

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates have designated reliever Romulo Sanchez for assignment.  The club has 10 days to waive, trade or release him.  Sanchez, 24, pitched in just two spring games before the Pirates demoted him to minor league camp.  He allowed one run.

The move was made to free up roster space for Craig Monroe, who has hit .281 with six home runs and 13 RBI this spring.

Odds and Ends: Bradley, Roberts, Cruz, Smoltz

By Tim Dierkes | January 9, 2009 at 10:40am CDT

Links for Friday…

  • David Chase looks at fantasy baseball’s top strikeout pitchers.
  • The third year of Milton Bradley’s contract turns into a club option if he has serious health problems this year.
  • Two players expected to attend the Brewers’ open tryout this month: Randall Simon and Mark Bellhorn.
  • Dave Cameron looks at the premium teams pay for proven closers.
  • Bobby Valentine comments on the Orioles’ Koji Uehara signing in Dan Connolly’s article.  Within that article Connolly suggests the trade market for Brian Roberts may be suffering because of Orlando Hudson’s availability on the free agent market.
  • The D’Backs wouldn’t be thrilled, but the Yankees could sign Juan Cruz and only surrender a fourth-round pick.
  • Pirates GM Neal Huntington said the team is looking at some comeback-type free agent outfielders.  Dejan Kovacevic guesses that Emil Brown, Craig Monroe, or Jonny Gomes could fit the bill.
  • The Red Sox designated knuckleballer Charlie Zink for assignment.
  • J.C. Bradbury believes the Braves were misleading with the public regarding their offer to John Smoltz.

Week in Review: 7/27 – 8/2

By Steve Adams | August 3, 2008 at 4:14pm CDT

We saw the non-waiver trade deadline come and go this week, and plenty of action to go along with it. Let’s recap the big moves of the week:

  • The Dodgers, Pirates, and Red Sox completed a three-team, blockbuster trade that sent Manny Ramirez to Los Angeles, Jason Bay to Boston, and Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris, Craig Hansen, and Brandon Moss to Pittsburgh. The Pirates got a pretty nice haul, and while Bay won’t necessarily replace Manny’s production, he’s much more affordable, signed through ’09, and doesn’t disrupt the clubhouse. The Dodgers add the big bat they need for a push in the NL West, though are now overloaded with overpaid outfielders. All in all, I don’t think any team made a bad deal in this one.
  • The Angels made a big move in adding Mark Teixeira to their lineup, sending Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Stephen Marek to Atlanta in exchange. The Angels didn’t need help at the time – they’re running away with the AL West – but this move will undoubtedly be significant in the postseason. Great boost to the Halos’ lineup.
  • The White Sox and Reds completed a trade that sent Ken Griffey Jr. to Chicago in exchange for Nick Masset and Danny Richar. I don’t understand this trade from the Sox perspective. Griffey was only hitting .245 at the time of the trade, and his range in center field isn’t close to what it once was. Still, he’s a presence in both the lineup and the clubhouse. Will playing for a contender rejuvenate him?
  • The Yankees acquired future hall-of-famer Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers in exchange for Kyle Farnsworth. With Jorge Posada out for the season, New York did a good job of solidifying their catcher’s spot, while the Tigers got some much-needed improvement in their bullpen.
  • The Twins aren’t known for making big trades at the deadline, and they held true to that in 2008. However, they made a move that could be bigger than any trade they might have made, when they designated Livan Hernandez for assignment, and recalled Francisco Liriano from Triple-A Rochester. The Twins DFA’ed Craig Monroe as well. The Rockies are looking for a fifth starter, and could have interest in Hernandez.
  • Relievers on the move: Arthur Rhodes was traded to the Marlins, giving them another effective lefty option in the bullpen. The Astros acquired LaTroy Hawkins, still buying despite being 9.5 games out of the wildcard race at the time.
  • The Nationals released Paul Lo Duca and Felipe Lopez. Both were highly unsuccessful this season, though they could generate interest from other teams.
  • Tim explained the rules behind waiver trades for those who are unfamiliar with how the process works after the July 31st non-waiver deadline. He also takes a look at some noteable names who stayed put at the deadline.
  • Minor moves: The Yankees signed Victor Zambrano to a minor league contract, while the Red Sox did the same with former Cleveland closer Joe Borowski.
  • The Diamondbacks are talking extension with their second ace, Dan Haren.
  • USA Today wrote an article on MLBTR. Check it out!

Livan Hernandez To Be Designated

By Tim Dierkes | August 1, 2008 at 3:25pm CDT

3:25pm: Joe Christensen says both Hernandez and Craig Monroe will likely be DFA’d today. Both were questionable acquisitions from Day 1.  Francisco Liriano and Randy Ruiz will join the Twins.

8:23am: According to La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins are expected to designate Livan Hernandez for assignment today to make room for Francisco Liriano.  The Twins are prepared to eat the remaining $1.66MM on Hernandez’s contract.

It’s the right move, just several weeks too late.  Hernandez turned into a pumpkin in late May, while Liriano has been on a tear for about a month.

It seems that the Twins may have been looking to trade Boof Bonser to clear a spot for Liriano.  Talks with the Giants and Rangers did not pan out however.

Twins Rumors: Bonser, Beltre, Roberts, Monroe

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2008 at 11:07am CDT

La Velle E. Neal III and Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune have the latest Twins buzz.

  • The Twins would like to trade Boof Bonser to make room for Francisco Liriano.  The Giants and Rangers might be interested.
  • Targets for the Twins: relief help, third base, and second base.
  • Talks for Adrian Beltre are not dead.  The Mariners are eyeing Nick Blackburn, Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Glen Perkins, and Denard Span.  The Twins aren’t biting.  Sounds like the Mariners want a premium arm for Beltre from the Twins or Giants, but those teams see it as more of a salary dump.
  • The Twins asked about Brian Roberts but couldn’t get anywhere.
  • The Rays might be looking at Craig Monroe as a bench option.
