Giants Notes: Zito, Abreu, Tanaka

By charliewilmoth | September 27, 2013 at 7:00pm CDT

If he had the choice to do it over again, Giants GM Brian Sabean says he would still have signed Barry Zito to his massive seven-year, $126MM contract, Andrew Baggarly of Comcast Sports Net Bay Area tweets. That's likely merely a case of a GM expressing confidence in and goodwill toward his player, since Zito has essentially been a back-of-the-rotation starter since the contract was signed, never posting an ERA better than his 4.03 mark in 2009. Zito has totaled just 5.9 fWAR over the life of the contract (which expires at the end of the season), making him one of the most overpaid players in baseball history. Here are more notes on the Giants.

  • Sabean is bearish on the free agent market, both for pitching and hitting, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. He will instead prioritize retaining his own players. The Giants will, however, be looking for another starting pitcher, even if they keep Tim Lincecum.
  • Sabean says the window of opportunity that led to the Giants winning the 2012 World Series is now shut, tweets John Shea of the Chronicle. "We've got to create a new window," Sabean says.
  • The Giants aren't likely to be top bidders for international players like Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu or Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, tweets Baggarly. Sabean has scouted Abreu in the Dominican Republic, but Shea writes that the Giants didn't think highly of Abreu's swing or his defense.

International Notes: Jose Abreu, Raicel Iglesias

By Zachary Links | September 26, 2013 at 3:00pm CDT

Earlier in the week it was reported that Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero could sign with a team soon. There are four or five teams who have seen the 26-year-old Guerrero work out five or six times, according to new agent Scott Boras. Here's the latest on a couple of other Cuban names who figure to make headlines in the offseason…

  • Cuban first baseman Jose Dariel Abreu will have two open showcases for all teams next week, according to Ben Badler of Baseball America.  Abreu will audition for teams at the Yankees’ Dominican facility on Monday and Tuesday and It’s expected that he will field grounders at first base, take batting practice, then face some live pitching.  However, he isn’t expected to play in any games or simulated games.
  • Pitcher Raicel Iglesias is rumored to have defected from Cuba, writes Nelson Acosta of Reuters.  The 23-year-old impressed scouts on Cuba's U.S. tour where he hit 92-95 mph on the gun and made batters miss often with his breaking ball, according to Badler, who also passes along a highlight reel of the hurler.  Right now, it appears that Iglesias' biggest problem is control.  At 5'11" and 165 pounds, he's also a bit undersized.  Badler feels that Iglesias is likely to begin his career in the minors.

International Notes: Marlins, Guerrero, Abreu, Twins

By Zachary Links | September 20, 2013 at 3:40pm CDT

A look at the latest on the international front…

  • The Marlins made a bid for Cuban shortstop Alexander Guerrero prior to the 26-year-old's decision to hire Scott Boras as his new agent but were told that the bid wasn't competitive, according to Juan C. Rodriguez of the Miami Sun-Sentinel. The Marlins are no longer in the mix for Guerrero but still have interest in fellow Cuban Jose Dariel Abreu. However, the slugging first baseman would require an even larger commitment than Guerrero. Abreu is said to be looking for a larger guarantee than Yasiel Puig's seven-year, $42MM commitment from the Dodgers.
  • The Twins have signed 16-year-old Dominican prospect Alexander Vargas, according to Ben Badler of Baseball America.  Terms of the deal are not known for the right-hander, who stands at 6-foot-3 and boasts a fastball in the low 90s, a curveball, and a changeup.  In addition to the La Academia product, Minnesota has also inked Dominican outfielder/first baseman Lewin Diaz for $1.4MM and Dominican third baseman Roni Tapia for $550K during this signing period.

Abreu Takes First Step Towards Free Agency

By Zachary Links | September 18, 2013 at 7:45pm CDT

Cuban prospect Jose Dariel Abreu has oficially established residency in Haiti, effectively the first step towards becoming an MLB free agent, a source tells Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com.  The slugger has been unblocked by the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and will be eligible to sign with a big league club when he is declared a free agent after filing the proper paperwork with MLB.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reported earlier this week that Abreu will hold a showcase for scouts later this month.  However, there’s a chance he won’t sign until sometime this winter, possibly as late as the Winter Meetings in December, according to Sanchez's source.

Crasnick sees the Red Sox, Rangers, Giants, Mets, White Sox, Pirates, and Marlins as possible landing spots for the 26-year-old first baseman.  It's not clear how much Abreu will command once he's eligible to be signed, though one August report said that he could get something in excess of $60MM.

Abreu To Showcase For Scouts In Late September

By Steve Adams | September 17, 2013 at 12:59pm CDT

Cuban defector Jose Dariel Abreu will host a showcase in the Dominican Republic at the end of September to audition for Major League scouts, reports ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. The 26-year-old first baseman has quickly become one of the most talked-about names on the international market after defecting from the Cuban national team just over a month ago.

Crasnick spoke with four talent evaluators with extensive international experience for his piece (which is full of interesting quotes), and the responses he got from those four reflect the varying opinions the scouting community currently holds on Abreu. All four agreed that Abreu has power that is at least comparable to that of Yasiel Puig (if not greater), but one NL scout expressed concerns over his ability to catch up to fastballs, stating that Abreu has "slider bat speed." That scout opined that Abreu would feast on No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 starters but struggle against top-of-the-rotation arms. Meanwhile, another scout said that Abreu could step into a big league lineup immediately and hit .260 with 25 homers.

Abreu drew comparisons to Kendrys Morales, Dayan Viciedo, Pedro Alvarez and former Angels first-round pick C.J. Cron when Crasnick asked for comparables. The scouts noted that Morales is a better hitter than Abreu, but Abreu possesses more power than Morales. Abreu is also said to be more grounded than Puig, whose flamboyant personality has garnered plenty of negative media attention.

One person who spoke with Crasnick said Abreu has already trimmed down significantly in preparation for his showcase, easing some concerns about his weight and body type. Crasnick points out that similar concerns surrounded Puig at the time of his signing last season, but he worked himself into phenomenal shape and is far from bad-bodied or unfit at this point.

Crasnick lists the Red Sox, Rangers, Giants, Mets, White Sox, Pirates and Marlins as speculative landing spots for Abreu, noting that Pittsburgh's interest likely will depend on how high the price tag soars. One scout said he thought four years and $32MM was a fair price but added that he wouldn't be surprised to see Abreu top $10MM per season. Each party that Crasnick spoke to expressed skepticism that Abreu would really be worth the rumored $60MM price tag:

"I like him fine, but I wouldn't sell the ranch to get him," the scout said. "The problem is, Cespedes and Puig can go 0-for-4 and they can still win you a game because they can run and throw. Abreu isn't that guy. He's more an Edgar Martinez-type. He has to hit or you've got nothing. He's all bat."

Whatever the price tag, it's likely that Abreu joins Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka and fellow Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero as the top international free agents on this year's market. Abreu will contend with the likes of Morales, Mike Napoli and Justin Morneau on this year's free agent market and could easily get the largest contract of any free agent first baseman.

International Notes: Tanaka, Abreu

By Steve Adams | September 17, 2013 at 11:00am CDT

The latest on some of the top international targets for Major League teams this winter…

  • The Angels have been scouting Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka and will consider a run at him this offseason, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. Tanaka represents a way for the team to upgrade its rotation with a controllable, young arm (Tanaka is currently 24) without having to sacrifice players like Mark Trumbo and Howie Kendrick in a trade, DiGiovanna adds.
  • In his game recap of Tanaka's most recent start (he threw a 10-hit, one-run complete game), Baseball America's Ben Badler cites Japanese media outlet Sanspo in reporting that the Yankees, Red Sox and Diamondbacks all had scouts in attendance once again. All three were said to have scouts in attendance for another recent Tanaka outing. Badler's subscription-only piece includes a full report on Tanaka's performance.
  • The Phillies aren't likely to make a play for Cuban slugger Jose Dariel Abreu, a team source told MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. The presence of Ryan Howard and Abreu's inability to handle an outfield spot leave them without a place to put him despite the need for right-handed power. Zolecki adds that the Phillies have worked out top prospect Maikel Franco at first base as well, so they could have a power-hitting, right-handed first baseman to eventually replace Howard anyway for a fraction of Abreu's price.

Quick Hits: Balentien, Marlins, Abreu, Yankees

By charliewilmoth | September 15, 2013 at 8:20pm CDT

Wladimir Balentien's journey to becoming Japan's single-season home run record holder took a number of twists and turns through the Mariners and Reds organizations, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick writes. Balentien, now with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, has 57 homers this year, topping Tuffy Rhodes, Alex Cabrera and Sadaharu Oh. Before that, though, he made his way through the Mariners' system, then went to the Reds in a minor trade after former Seattle GM Bill Bavasi took a job there. He played part of two years in the Reds organization and failed to find a lasting spot on their big-league roster. "For me, he was just one of those guys who ran out of time," says Bavasi. "It's not like there were two clubs that passed on him and he went over there and played great. There were 30 clubs that passed on him, and he went over there and found his niche. It's kind of remarkable what he's done." Here are more notes from around baseball.

  • The Marlins have been scouting Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu, reports Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. Frisaro also notes that the Marlins are scouting "a couple" of young Cuban pitchers at an MLB showcase in the Dominican Republic. Abreu is expected to command an enormous contract, so it would be surprising if the Marlins ended up being serious contenders for his services. Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun Sentinel tweets that, while the Marlins are interested in Abreu, they probably won't be able to or willing to spend the money necessary to sign him.
  • The Yankees' outlook for 2014 is bleak, Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes. Robinson Cano, Hiroki Kuroda, Mariano Rivera, Curtis Granderson and Andy Pettitte will all be free agents. While some of them might be back, many Yankees who are already under control for 2014 are signed to ugly contracts. Sherman points out that the Yankees have also seen few positive developments from their young players this season, and that 2013 hasn't seen the debut of a single blue-chip prospect.

East Notes: Haren, Jeter, Abreu

By charliewilmoth | September 12, 2013 at 8:30pm CDT

The Yankees and Nationals discussed a possible Dan Haren deal last weekend, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports. The two sides never came close to making a trade, and Rosenthal suggests that money might have been part of the reason why — Haren would have only started three times for the Yankees (and wouldn't have been eligible for the playoffs, if the Yankees were to win a spot), but he was still due about $1.5MM in salary. The Yankees' interest stemmed from the recent troubles of Phil Hughes and David Huff.

  • Yankees icon Derek Jeter should consider retiring, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman writes. Heyman argues that, after a season ruined by injury, Jeter faces a future in which he might just be a utility player, and that would be an undignified end to a great career. Playing well at shortstop at age 40 is very difficult, and Jeter will face an uphill battle if he tries to return next season.
  • The Red Sox have joined the Giants as teams who are scouting Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu in the Dominican Republic, Dionisio Soldevila of ESPNDeportes.com tweets. We've already heard reports of the Red Sox's interest in Abreu, and Boston seems like a good fit for Abreu — the Red Sox have the financial resources to sign him, and Mike Napoli becomes a free agent after the season.

West Notes: Hoffman, Giants, Abreu, Garza

By charliewilmoth | September 12, 2013 at 7:03pm CDT

The Padres have promoted former star closer Trevor Hoffman to upper level pitching coordinator and special assistant to GM Josh Byrnes, according to a team release. His duties will include coordinating and evaluating pitchers in the high minors and at the big-league level. Hoffman has worked in the Padres front office since he retired as a player in 2011 after racking up 552 of his career 601 saves as a Padre. Here are more notes from the West divisions.

  • Giants general manager Brian Sabean and former manager Felipe Alou are currently in the Dominican Republic, scouting Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu, Dionisio Soldevila of ESPNDeportes.com tweets. In late August, the Giants were reported to be interested in Abreu. Abreu, who defected from Cuba earlier this summer, appears likely to receive a contract even larger than that of Yasiel Puig, who got seven years and $42MM from the Dodgers.
  • Matt Garza has been a disappointment for the Rangers since they traded for him, but that's consistent with the rest of his career, ESPN's Jayson Stark says on ESPN Dallas' Fitzsimmons and Durrett podcast. "If you look at his body of work, you think that the performance has ever totally matched the stuff?" Stark asks. Garza's peripherals with Texas (8.5 K/9, 2.3 BB/9) remain above average, but it's likely a 4.46 ERA isn't what the Rangers were hoping for when they acquired him. Stark also adds that the Cubs "sold high" on Garza, dealing him after a string of good starts against bad teams.

Giants Interested In Jose Abreu, Masahiro Tanaka

By Zachary Links | August 29, 2013 at 12:40pm CDT

The success of imports like Hyun-Jin Ryu, Yoenis Cespedes, and Yasiel Puig in the state of California has led to the Giants rethinking their approach to the international market this winter.  Sources tell Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com that the club's scouting department is going into hyperdrive with an eye on Japan's Masahiro Tanaka and Cuba's Jose Dariel Abreu.

“The risk and cost assessment has to be part of the equation,” Giants vice president Bobby Evans said. “As for the rewards, you do look at what some of these recent high-risk signings have done. It does give you a sense of `This is the potential.’ It does give you that desire to say, `Hey, can we get the next one?’”

Aside from seeing the success of Puig et al, the Giants recognize that this winter's free agent market will be relatively thin, making it necessary to explore other options.  San Francisco also recognizes that they will have a good amount of cash to spend thanks to their share of the league's TV revenue.  They'll do their due diligence on both Tanaka and Abreu, but Tanaka might be the better fit of the two given the club's emphasis on pitching and the potential marketing opportunities he brings.

Baggarly notes that the Giants may have been discouraged from going after international free agents after their bad experience with Cuban defector Osvaldo Fernandez in the late 1990s.  However, they're now seeing that top foreign talents have been able to come to the major leagues and succeed right off the bat.  Evans was also quick to note that the Giants always did their homework on players like Cespedes and Puig, along with every other international free agent.  For example, sources said they went after Jose Iglesias in 2008 when he defected from Cuba.
