Jose Lima

Odds & Ends: Donald, DeRosa, Tigers, Boras

By Mike Axisa | June 14, 2009 at 12:58pm CDT

Three years ago today the Diamondbacks cut ties with righthander Russ Ortiz. With $22MM remaining on the four year, $33MM deal he signed before the 2005 season, Ortiz became the highest paid player ever to be released by a Major League team.

On to the links…

  • Despite his knee injury, Jason Donald remains one of the Phillies' best trade chips according to Scott Lauber.
  • Derrick Goold writes that Mark DeRosa's trade value is rising with the team's recent hot streak.
  • The Detroit Free Press polled it's readers, and 32.7% want to see the Tigers trade for a bullpen arm to stay in contention.
  • Bill Shaikin writes about master negotiator Scott Boras and his affect on the draft.
  • Kurt Streeter reports that 36-year-old Jose Lima is still hoping to make it back to the big leagues. Lima Time is currently 1-1 with a 3.16 ERA for the independent Long Beach Armada, and last pitched in the big leagues for the Mets in 2006.
  • ESPN's Jorge Arangure tweets that the Padres are targetting Dominican outfielder Jose Alberta Pena.
  • Miami linebacker Glenn Cook was surprised when the Cubs drafted him in the 48th round because he hasn't played baseball in six years.

Odds And Ends: Draft, Atkins, Lima

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 4, 2009 at 9:45am CDT

Some non-McLouth, non-Glavine links to start your Thursday off…

  • On draft day, the Orioles, who pick fifth, will have an ordered list of their top five players and will choose the highest ranked player remaining regardless of position according to Jim Hunter of MASN.com.
  • Roch Kubatko of MASN.com would like to see the O's use their pick on a high school arm: either Zack Wheeler or Jacob Turner.
  • The D'Backs will have a bigger draft budget than usual, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. They could spend "in the neighborhood of $10MM," since they have seven of the first 64 picks. Not bad, considering the Mets won't have picked once by then.
  • The Yankees don't get anything if they can't sign the player they choose 29th overall so, as MLB.com's Brian Hoch reports, signability is a factor.
  • Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post wonders if Garrett Atkins could be in line for a demotion to Triple A.
  • Jose Lima's making a comeback! MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports that Lima visited the Dodger Stadium press box last night.
  • Jorge Says No! chatted with Garry Templeton, Lima's manager, about the 36-year-old pitcher. Apparently he still throws 90 mph.
  • Check out this clip of David Ortiz's visit with Torii Hunter on Hanging with Mr. Hunter.

Angels May Look to Independent Leagues for Pitching Help

By Brian Shephard | April 26, 2009 at 1:34pm CDT

According to Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times, Angels manager Mike Scioscia says he might look to independent leagues for pitching help.

"There are some good pitchers that don't have jobs that have major league experience," Scioscia said of independent league pitchers.

According to Baxter, "the team appears unlikely to make a trade and management doesn't believe the big-name free agents still on the market – namely Pedro Martinez and Paul Byrd – can get up to game speed fast enough to help them."

Baxter notes that Jose Lima and Brendan Donnelly are among the players who have resurrected their careers after pitching in the independent Atlantic League. He mentions Ryan Drese as a player who "might be worth a look" by the Angels.

Odds & Ends: Smoltz, Cubs, Melky, Lima

By Tim Dierkes | March 30, 2009 at 10:55am CDT

Links for Monday…

  • Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle writes about the Giants' lack of interest in Adam Melhuse and considers other players who could help.
  • Alex Speier of WEEI looks back at the Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz trade of 1987.  According to former Tigers GM Bill Lajoie, the Braves would have taken Steve Searcy instead of Smoltz.
  • Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald says the Cubs "appear to be getting some trade feelers" on out of options relievers Chad Gaudin and Angel Guzman.  Moving one could create space for Rule 5 pick David Patton.
  • Tyler Hissey of Around The Majors looks back at the Delmon Young/Matt Garza swap.  What did MLBTR commenters think when the deal went down on November 28th, 2007?  Click here to find out.  Garza will face the Twins for the first time today.
  • Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts says the Tigers are apparently trying to recreate the bullpen of the 2007 Rays.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes Melky Cabrera would be best served as an NL bench player.
  •  T.J. Simers of the L.A. Times discusses the Dodgers' $47MM bust, Jason Schmidt.
  • Aaron Shinsano of East Windup Chronicle has more Korean prospect news: the Royals signed catcher Shin Jin-ho, while the Mariners signed catcher Choi Ji-man.
  • Jose Lima is back playing baseball in the U.S., according to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times.
  • Will Sommer of Mets Fans Forever talked to GM Omar Minaya.
  • Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post looks at the Marlins' decision to non-tender reliever Joe Nelson.  It would've made a lot of sense to bring him back.

Odds and Ends: Pavano, Lima, Sabathia

By Tim Dierkes | April 16, 2008 at 2:30pm CDT

Today’s link collection contains a trio of awesome pitchers.  Enjoy.

  • Carl Pavano is talking about five or six more seasons; his new agent calls him a "1-2 starter."  You can chuckle, but some team will probably toss him a million bucks this winter.
  • The Kia Tigers have already had enough of Jose Lima.  Coincidentally here’s a funny quote from Lima regarding his Atlantic League paycheck from ’03.
  • Ken Rosenthal discusses C.C. Sabathia’s situation, noting that the Indians could probably sign him if they’d give five years.
  • Rany Jazayerli writes in praise of Dayton Moore.
  • Rule V pick Fernando Hernandez is headed back to the White Sox.
