Rockies Rumors: Fuentes, Fogg

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 11:29am CDT

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 11:28am: More from Renck.  He confirms the Red Sox’ interest in Fuentes and adds the Astros to the mix.  While the Rox like Burke, the teams don’t really match up because that’s not enough.

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 12:01am: The Denver Post’s Troy E. Renck has more.

  • Brian Anderson – remember him? – is on the radar as a lefty swingman.  The 35 year-old hasn’t pitched in the bigs since ’05.
  • Renck ponders whether the Rox might revisit talks for Matt Morris, a sentiment echoed by Jenifer Langosch.
  • Nothing seems to be imminent on the Fuentes-Lowrie rumor.

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 9:21pm: A suitor for Fuentes has emerged.  ESPN’s Amy Nelson says the Red Sox are interested and the Rockies could seek Jed Lowrie.  Lowrie would be a nice fit at second base.

FROM 12-3-07 at 8:28pm:

MLB.com’s Thomas Harding checks in with some Rockies nuggets.

  • The Rockies have no pressing need to trade Brian Fuentes, so they’ll sit pretty with two closers unless an impressive and helpful offer comes along.  Dan O’Dowd believes four or five clubs might have the goods and need to get Fuentes.  We’ll see.
  • The Rox let Josh Fogg’s agent know they’d like to explore bringing him back.  No figures were exchanged.
  • The team still hopes to bring LaTroy Hawkins back, but they’d have to go to two years to pull that off.  They already chose not to exercise an effective $3.5MM option on him.  It seems the Rockies may have underestimated the interest in Hawkins.

Rangers Rumors: Bay, Gagne, Fukudome

By Tim Dierkes | December 3, 2007 at 10:34pm CDT

T.R. Sullivan has the Rangers goods for us this evening.  Wow, did MLB.com send 30+ reporters out to Nashville?

  • The Rangers are still pursuing Eric Gagne to return as their closer (and then maybe they’d flip him again).  The interest is mutual.
  • The team is also considering LaTroy Hawkins, Shawn Chacon, Luis Vizcaino, Trever Miller, and Octavio Dotel.  Basically, most of the relief market.  Problem is, the Rangers don’t want to give more than one year to any of these guys.
  • The Rangers are moving toward filling center field internally after exploring options.  Carlos Gomez, Felix Pie, and Carlos Gonzalez proved unavailable or too pricey (though if all the Mets wanted for Gomez was Gerald Laird, Daniels should’ve pounced).
  • Daniels has shifted gears to a corner outfielder.  Kosuke Fukudome remains on the radar.
  • The Rangers had a preliminary conversation with the Bucs about Jason Bay.
  • The team isn’t focused on getting pitching for once, but Daniels is still perusing medical reports on Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, and Jason Jennings.
  • Daniels said he’s not shopping Hank Blalock.

Abraham On Hawkins, Igawa, Santana

By Tim Dierkes | November 29, 2007 at 3:59pm CDT

Peter Abraham of The Journal News checks in on his blog with a couple of new Yankees tidbits.

  • The Yankees are considering LaTroy Hawkins, Ron Mahay, and a return of Luis Vizcaino among relief possibilities.  Hawkins has the Tigers and Rockies after him.  Mahay interests the Braves, Brewers, and Royals.  Haven’t heard much about the Viz yet.
  • Abraham says there is a market for Kei Igawa.  The Yanks don’t have a rotation spot for him, but they are paying him through 2011.  He’s signed cheaply since a large part of the expenditure was his posting fee.  Other teams known to have shown interest in Igawa at one point: Padres, Orioles, Mariners, D’Backs, Dodgers, Mets, Cubs, Braves, Tigers, and Indians.
  • Abraham does not think the Mets will surrender Jose Reyes, and therefore doesn’t think they can pull off a Johan Santana deal.

Tigers Offer Contract To Hawkins?

By Tim Dierkes | November 28, 2007 at 11:34pm CDT

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press writes that the Tigers have interest in free agent reliever LaTroy Hawkins and may have even offered him a multiyear contract.  Among free agent relievers the Tigers have previously expressed interest in Octavio Dotel.

Dotel is 32 and a health risk, but he still has that huge strikeout rate.  I’m guessing he wants at least two years, $12MM.

Hawkins is 35 and healthy; he did somehow manage to post a 3.42 ERA in 55 innings with the Rockies.  That’s not easy to do.  But his 1.8 K/BB and 4.7 K/9 rates were not impressive.  He might be after a two-year, $8MM deal.

Rumor Roundup: Colon, Barrett, Clement, Monroe

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2007 at 1:42pm CDT

Rounding up some of today’s rumors…

  • The Phillies have had conversations about Randy Wolf and Bartolo Colon.  It’s assumed they have about $10MM to spend.
  • The Rockies are talking to Michael Barrett’s agent.  They’ve also got some interest in Mike Maroth.  He doesn’t seem like a great match.  LaTroy Hawkins hasn’t had any recent discussions with the Rockies, and other teams are knocking on his door (including the Brewers).
  • The White Sox may look to Japan for relief help.  They’ve been linked to Yasuhiko Yabuta in the past.
  • Richard Griffin notes that the Blue Jays pursued Matt Clement three years ago, and they could go after him again now.  I’m guessing Clement will opt for San Diego though.
  • Sabernomics interviewed ESPN’s Keith Law.  I chatted with Keith back in July, if you’re interested.
  • The Cubs only get a player from the Twins for Craig Monroe if the Twins can strike a deal with him.  And the Twins won’t be going to arbitration with Monroe.

Brewers Targeting Herges, Hawkins, Mahay

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2007 at 10:50am CDT

UPDATE: Melvin signed sidearmer Randy Choate this afternoon to start things off.  This MLB.com article also quotes Cordero’s agent Bean Stringfellow that "numerous" teams have shown serious interest in the closer.  The Astros may be making a strong push.

Tom Haudricourt checks in with some names among the eight or nine free agent relievers on Brewers GM Doug Melvin’s radar.  And to think, they cut this part out of Haudricourt’s newspaper article.

Melvin is currently interested in righties Matt Herges and LaTroy Hawkins, as well as southpaw Ron Mahay.  The Rockies have one-year offers on the table for Herges and Hawkins in the $1.5-2MM range.  Any team guaranteeing two years can probably have Herges or Hawkins.  Mahay’s in the three-year, $12MM class.  Haudricourt suggests David Riske, another 3/12 type, might also be a consideration.

The Brewers have an offer out to Francisco Cordero, and haven’t decided whether to make a proposal to Scott Linebrink.  Both are Type A free agents, so at least the Brewers should offer them arbitration.  I say let ’em both walk and reap the draft picks.  (The Mets, by the way, seemingly won’t be in on Linebrink).

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Barrett, Fukumori

By Tim Dierkes | November 8, 2007 at 3:59pm CDT

What are the Rockies up to as they plot to defend their NL pennant?  Tracy Ringolsby and Troy E. Renck have the latest.

  • Ringolsby says Garrett Atkins is staying put, which should help the third baseman relax a little bit.  This echoes Renck’s sentiments yesterday.  Renck also noted that the Rox won’t be offering Atkins a multiyear deal anytime soon.
  • Yesterday Renck said that after Yorvit Torrealba, the Rockies were considering Jose Molina, Paul Lo Duca, Jason Kendall, and Ramon Castro for catcher.  However Ringolsby says today that Michael Barrett and Kendall are the main targets.  Renck has come on board with that today, noting that Dan O’Dowd has contacted the agents for Barrett, Kendall, and Lo Duca.
  • Ringolsby adds that the Rockies are exploring the Japanese reliever market, namely Hitoki Iwase and Kazuo Fukumori.  Fukumori might appeal as the cheaper of the two.
  • Meanwhile the Indians, Brewers, Phillies, and Mets like Brian Fuentes.  We’ve also read about the Tigers’ interest.  The Rockies’ willingness to trade him may depend on the progress of 2007 top draft pick Casey Weathers.
  • Jason Jennings might be leaning toward signing with the Padres.  This echoes an obscure article we found back in July.
  • Renck says that if the Rockies don’t hear by Tuesday about their offers to Kaz Matsui, Matt Herges, LaTroy Hawkins, and Torrealba, they’ll start looking at other options.
  • Renck adds that the Rockies have checked in with Ron Mahay’s people.  He’s getting popular.
  • The Rockies are out on Jon Garland – they can’t fit his $12MM salary into the 2008 budget.  Matsui moving on would clear $3MM though.
  • The idea of locking up Troy Tulowitzki long-term is being entertained.  It probably wouldn’t happen until after the 2008 season though.

Odds and Ends: Cook, Benoit, Griffey, Riske

By Tim Dierkes | October 31, 2007 at 8:59pm CDT

Some random tidbits that didn’t get their own posts today…

  • The Rockies picked up Aaron Cook’s $4.5MM option as expected.  The bigger question is whether they can sign him long-term, maybe for three years.  They also passed on LaTroy Hawkins for $3.75MM but may still sign him.
  • The Rangers agreed to a two-year contract with reliever Joaquin Benoit for two years and $6MM.  He would’ve hit free agency after 2008.  Smart move would be to let him rack up 10-15 saves next season and then trade him for something good.
  • The Braves aren’t expected to get their next center fielder through free agency, and Terence Moore suggests trading for Ken Griffey Jr. to fill the position.  More reasonable targets might be David DeJesus or Coco Crisp.
  • The Royals may yet retain David Riske, who wants a multiyear deal and would like to stay.  They’ll definitely offer him arbitration, since he’s a Type B free agent.  Also, longtime Royal Mike Sweeney might finally play elsewhere.
  • Free agent Shawn Chacon is looking to start in 2008, and he’ll make over $4MM.
  • Charley Walters says the Twins won’t pursue Barry Bonds.  If Bonds is to land in the AL, the Orioles, Devil Rays, Royals, Angels, and A’s may be his only options.
  • McCovey Chronicles suggests a Noah Lowry for Bill Hall swap.

Minor Trades and Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | August 20, 2006 at 9:19pm CDT

The Cubs unloaded Neifi Perez on the Tigers today, and it was no surprise Neifi got through waivers.  What team would want to be on the hook for $2.5MM for him next year?  Ditching Neifi at this point at least partially rights the wrong of signing him to an extension in the first place for Jim Hendry.  The Cubs’ "everything man" will be making outs atop of Detroit’s lineup now.  Even more impressive is that Hendry snagged a 22 year-old catching prospect, Chris Robinson, in the deal.

The Mets added righty reliever Guillermo Mota today.  Along with Oliver Perez, this is another project with plenty of upside.  Mota was one of the game’s top setup men a few years ago.

Tom Glavine’s got a possible blood clot, which could mean season or career-ending surgery. At least his life is not in danger.  The news first appeared on an ESPN message board from a man said to be Glavine’s brother-in-law.  Back when Glavine appeared healthy, the same source indicated that the southpaw would finish his career with the Braves, at any salary.

Reggie Sanders may have cleared waivers.  Who wants a 38 year-old right fielder with a .248/.304/.424 line?  Don’t forget the $5MM he’s owed next year.

From Yankees announcer Jim Kaat: the Rangers may be talking to the Orioles about Mark Teixeira.  Tex is from Maryland, for what it’s worth.

Plenty of buzz going around in various forms of media that the Red Sox may acquire reliever LaTroy Hawkins.  We’ll know soon enough.  The 33 year-old has, at least, kept the ball in the yard and exhibited good control with the Orioles this year.
