Dodgers To Sign Logan Bawcom

By Jeff Todd | April 18, 2019 at 4:46pm CDT

The Dodgers have agreed to a minors deal with righty Logan Bawcom, according to J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group (Twitter link). The 30-year-old is expected to provide some upper-minors depth once he’s ready to be activated.

Bawcom joined the professional ranks with the Dodgers after being selected in the 17th round of the 2010 draft. He was eventually shipped to the Mariners as part of the 2012 deal that brought reliever Brandon League to Los Angeles.

Though he has still yet to crack the majors, Bawcom has compiled a solid track record in the upper minors. He has seen time in six Triple-A seasons, pitching to a cumulative 3.70 ERA with 7.5 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 over 384 2/3 innings.

While he has worked at times as a starter including last year with the Dodgers’ top two affiliates, Bawcom has primarily functioned as a reliever. It’d rate as a surprise for him to debut this year in Los Angeles, though it’s certainly possible he’ll pitch his way into consideration if a need arises.

Minor MLB Transactions: 5/16/18

By Steve Adams | May 16, 2018 at 5:23pm CDT

Here are Wednesday’s minor moves from around the game…

  • Right-hander Logan Bawcom is back with the Dodgers organization for a third stint after having his contract purchased from the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League. The Dodgers’ Double-A affiliate in Tulsa announced the move, and Bawcom started for them today (two runs on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings). Now 29 years old, Bawcom was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 17th round back in 2010, and he also spent the 2016 season in their system. Bawcom, still looking for his first call to the big leagues, has pitched rather well in the upper minors throughout his pro career. In 346 innings at the Triple-A level, he owns a 3.38 ERA with 7.5 K/9 against 3.7 BB/9 and ground-ball rates that typically sit in the 41 to 44 percent range.
  • The Athletics released outfielder/first baseman Slade Heathcott from their Triple-A affiliate in Nashville, per the Pacific Coast League’s transactions page. The former first-round pick was once considered one of the Yankees’ best prospects, but he’s appeared in just 17 big league games and collected 30 plate appearances (albeit with a strong .400/.429/.720 slash to show for it). Strong production in his brief cup of coffee notwithstanding, Heathcott has never been much of a force in the upper minors. After tearing through Class-A Advanced as a 21-year-old (.314/.382/.486), he’s slashed .258/.329/.415 in 205 Double-A games and .263/.338/.358 in 177 Triple-A contests. His numbers with Nashville this season — .266/.333/.376 in 120 PAs — are a near mirror image of his career stats at that level.

Minor MLB Transactions: 8/2/17

By Jeff Todd | August 2, 2017 at 7:14pm CDT

We’ll use this post to track the day’s minor moves…

  • Mets left-hander Josh Edgin, who was designated for assignment in advance of the non-waiver trade deadline, has cleared waivers and been assigned outright to Triple-A Las Vegas, tweets James Wagner of the New York Times. The 30-year-old southpaw missed the 2015 season due to Tommy John surgery and returned to throw 10 1/3 innings in the Majors for the Mets last season. He’s posted a 3.65 ERA through his first 37 frames in 2017, but that seemingly solid mark came with an uninspiring 6.6 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9. He’s also surrendered a .280/.374/.400 line to opposing left-handed batters, which assuredly didn’t help his cause.

Earlier Moves

  • The Padres have released righty Logan Bawcom, per Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network (via Twitter). While the 28-year-old has yet to earn a promotion — with San Diego or in his prior stints with the Dodgers and Mariners organizations — he once held a 40-man spot in Seattle and has at times produced interesting results in the upper minors. Thus far this year, he carries a 2.70 ERA with 9.1 K/9 against 4.2 BB/9 in his 53 1/3 innings over 36 appearances at Triple-A El Paso. It seems, then, that this move was made to allow Bawcom to seek an opportunity with another organization; Rosenthal notes that he’s expected land elsewhere in the next day or two.
