Matt Treanor Retires

Veteran catcher Matt Treanor has officially retired from his playing career, according to the Triple-A International League’s transactions page. MLBTR’s Zach Links has confirmed the news (Twitter link).

The 38-year-old Treanor signed a minor league deal with Cleveland this offseason but didn’t get into a game for the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Columbus as he dealt with a hamstring injury. After a setback in his rehab and with the birth of his first child nearing, Treanor has elected to spend time with his wife (three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May) and child rather than pursue further rehab of the injury, according to Links.

In parts of nine Major League seasons between the Marlins, Rangers, Tigers, Royals and Dodgers, Treanor posted a .221/.313/.305 batting line and gunned down 26 percent of the baserunners who attempted to steal against him — highlighted by a league-leading 47 percent for the 2006 Marlins.

Minor Moves: Tolleson, Treanor, Pino

Tonight's minor moves..

  • The Blue Jays announced that they have agreed to terms with infielder Steven Tolleson on a minor league contract with an invitation to attend big league spring training.  The 30-year-old spent last season with the White Sox's Triple-A affiliate, batting .288/.381/.426 with eight home runs.  Tolleson has appeared in 54 Major League games for Oakland (2010) and Baltimore (2012).
  • The Indians announced that they signed catcher Matt Treanor to a minor league deal with an invite to major league spring training.  He'll earn $800K if he makes the big league roster, tweets Paul Hoynes of the Plain Dealer.  Treanor had 122 plate appearances with the Dodgers in 2012, posting a less-than-stellar .175/.281/.282 slash line.  The 37-year-old did not play last season as he recovered from surgery on his left knee.
  • The Twins signed right-hander Yohan Pino to a minor league deal, according to the MLB.com transactions page.  Pino, who turns 30 on Dec. 26, spent the bulk of last season with the Reds' Triple-A affiliate, posting a 3.26 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 16 starts and 15 relief appearances. 

Dodgers Decline Options For Coffey, Rivera, Treanor

The Dodgers have declined the 2013 contract options for Todd Coffey, Juan Rivera and Matt Treanor, Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times reports (on Twitter). The players are now free agents.

Coffey's contract included a $2.5MM club option with a $300K buyout, Rivera's contract included a $4MM club option with a $500K buyout, and Treanor's contract included a $950K option with a $150K buyout. Dodgers Sign Matt Treanor

The Dodgers added a catcher to the fold today, announcing on their Twitter feed that they've signed Matt Treanor to a one-year contract that includes an option for 2013. The deal guarantees Treanor $1MM. He'll earn $850K in 2012, with the option worth $950K ($150K buyout).

Treanor, 35, has spent time with the Marlins, Tigers, Royals, and Rangers since debuting in the bigs in 2004. In 242 plate appearances for Kansas City and Texas last season, the backstop hit .214/.338/.291.

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com first reported that the Dodgers were eyeing Treanor, while Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports indicated that the two sides were making progress toward a deal and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter) confirmed the agreement. 12:51pm: The Dodgers are making progress with Treanor on a one-year deal likely to be worth just under $1MM, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

1:09am: The Dodgers are after a veteran catcher and are now looking at Matt Treanor, a baseball source told Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.  Treanor, 36, would serve as a veteran backstop alongside second-year catcher A.J. Ellis and rookie Tim Federowicz.

Treanor split time between the Royals and Rangers in 2011 and hit .214/.338/.291 in 242 plate appearances.

Tigers Notes: Ellis, Hill, Molina, Laird

The Tigers had already locked up Brandon Inge, Jhonny Peralta, Joaquin Benoit and Victor Martinez by November 23rd of last year. Here’s the latest on the team as they start the current offseason more quietly… 

  • The Tigers seem to believe they can find help via trades, tweets Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.  The club has given up a lot in the past but they are willing to deal anyone but their top minor league prospects.
  • Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press that the Tigers didn’t offer contracts to Mark Ellis, Jamey Carroll or Aaron Hill, three middle infielders who recently signed two-year deals. Should the Tigers pursue free agent middle infielders such as Clint Barmes or Kelly Johnson, they’d likely be looking at a two-year commitment given the deals we’ve seen so far and the number of teams with openings at second or short.
  • The Tigers are considering Jose Molina, Matt Treanor, Ramon Castro and former Tiger Gerald Laird as possible backup catchers, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter). All four backstops are free agents who could give Alex Avila an occasional breather while keeping Martinez’s knees fresh so he can contribute on offense.

Rangers Acquire Matt Treanor

Matt Treanor is heading back to Texas. The Royals announced that they have sent the catcher to the Rangers, the team with which he started the season, for cash considerations. Treanor joins catchers Mike Napoli and Yorvit Torrealba on Texas' roster.

Treanor missed the last 29 games after suffering a concussion at the end of July. He has been rehabbing at Double-A for the last seven games. Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star and MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan first reported on the deal, which brings Kansas City's 40-man roster to 39.

Treanor, 35, has a .226/.351/.306 line in 230 plate appearances this year and he has thrown out 26% of attempted base stealers from behind the plate. Given his career marks (.227/.318/.310, 26% caught stealing) that's probably pretty close to what the Rangers anticipated when they signed him to a one-year, $850K deal in December. Though Treanor doesn't project as a ranked free agent, he's not far from Type B status, so Texas may have the chance to obtain a pick for the backstop if they're prepared to offer him arbitration.

1:57pm: The Royals are about to send catcher Matt Treanor back to the Rangers in a cash transaction, tweets Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.

12:50pm: A club source tells MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan the Rangers will "likely do something today."  In Sullivan's opinion, the team's biggest need is a right-handed bat.

Royals Rumors: Pena, Treanor, May, Adcock

The latest on the Royals, who acquired Matt Treanor today…

  • It seems that the Royals will team Brayan Pena and Treanor behind the plate, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star (on Twitter). This means Lucas May might not break camp with the Royals.
  • May is out of options and GM Dayton Moore says the Royals are "probably looking to do something" with him. A trade is the preferred route, according to Dutton (on Twitter).
  • Moore confirmed to Dutton that Rule 5 selection Nate Adcock will make the team (Twitter link).
  • Rany Jazayerli analyzes each pitcher on the Royals' projected Opening Day staff.

Royals Acquire Matt Treanor

The Royals acquired catcher Matt Treanor from the Rangers for cash considerations, tweets Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.  The acquisition fills up the Royals' 40-man roster, a press release notes.

Treanor, 35, hit .211/.287/.308 in 272 plate appearances for the Rangers last year, leading the team with 614 2/3 innings caught.  He re-signed for $850K in December to back up Yorvit Torrealba, but the Rangers acquired Mike Napoli in late January.  The move opens up a 40-man roster spot for the Rangers and also a 25-man spot, which makes it easier to retain Rule 5 pick Mason Tobin or Chris Davis.

The Royals' Treanor acquisition comes two days after veteran Jason Kendall told MLB.com's Dick Kaegel his tentative return date from September shoulder surgery is now late April.  Brayan Pena and Lucas May, both out of options, have been battling for Opening Day catching spots.  Treanor, by the way, was originally drafted by the Royals in 1994.
