Blocked Prospects: Brent Lillibridge

By Aaron Shinsano | March 30, 2008 at 10:04pm CDT

One of the key components of the Adam LaRoche to Pittsburgh deal in early 2007 was shortstop Brent Lillibridge, who came over to the Braves along with Mike Gonzalez. Lillibridge, who had a decent shot of making the Braves as a utility player this spring, was one of the team’s final cuts and will start the year in Richmond.

Lillibridge’s instincts have always drawn raves and he’s matured quickly. Many would argue he’s Major League ready now. But for the foreseeable future he’s blocked by Yunel Escobar, himself a newly appointed starter. Lillibridge managed a .400 OBP during two Class-A stops in 2006. In 2007 he hit 10 homers in 87 games at Triple-A Richmond and projects as a 15-20 HR guy in the bigs. He’s got good, but not blazing speed. Yet in 309 minor league games he’s swiped 105 bases, including 28 with an 85% success rate in Richmond. It’s the instincts, man.

However, with Escobar’s fantastic close to the 2007 season there was little doubt who the Braves starting shortstop would be going into 2008. Lillibridge had a shot to make the team as a utility player, and in early March was even given a surprise start at third by manager Bobby Cox despite not having played the position since the 2004 Cape Cod summer league. "He can play, man," said Cox after the game when questioned about the move. Lillibridge also saw time at second and in center (where he spent two seasons in college) during the spring.

The reason he didn’t head north with the team this year was partly because he hit just .224 this spring (and led the team with 18 whiffs), but also because the team would like to get him regular at bats, something that wouldn’t happen if he’d made the team as a bench player. At the very least a late season callup seems in order, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he’d get some starts in center should Mark Kotsay’s back flare up.

You get the feeling Cox would like to find a place for Lillibridge. His name often surfaces in trade talks, but that probably has more to do with other GMs coveting him than any willingness to deal on the part of the Braves. Still, it’s fun to think about what an "intangibles" kind of player like Lillibridge might fetch. He could end up being a key piece to the Braves getting a top player for the stretch run.

Aaron Shinsano writes for East Windup Chronicle.

Pirates Acquire LaRoche For Gonzalez

By Tim Dierkes | January 17, 2007 at 3:55pm CDT

UPDATE: A source tells me the Pirates included shortstop Brent Lillibridge in the trade, and it’s a four-player deal.  That’s quite a price – Baseball Prospectus’s PECOTA system indicates that the college product would be baseball’s ninth best shortstop in 2007 (based on projected WARP).

The above info is now confirmed by John Perrotto of the Beaver County Allegheny Times.  The Braves are sending outfielder Jamie Romak to the Bucs to complete the deal.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have agreed to send Mike Gonzalez and another unknown player to the Braves for first baseman Adam LaRoche.  Nice to finally put the daily LaRoche rumors to rest.  Given the inclusion of Lillibridge, I’d say the Braves won another deal here.

Check out RotoAuthority to read the fantasy implications of this deal.

Pirates Still Chasing LaRoche, Tracy

By Tim Dierkes | January 16, 2007 at 9:06am CDT

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tells us that Pirate GM Dave Littlefield is under pressure to acquire a power bat before the season begins. The two main targets are still Adam LaRoche and Chad Tracy, but will Littlefield include a second Major Leaguer along with Mike Gonzalez?  And if Kovacevic’s report of Littlefield’s mandate is true, isn’t that leak detrimental to the GM’s efforts?

The Bucs still refuse to include Chris Duffy or Paul Maholm in a two-for-one deal.  Kovacevic speculates that another reliever might represent a compromise; if the Pirates need to include Salomon Torres they should do it.  While it would decimate the bullpen it still makes sense to trade relievers for sluggers.

The article also mentions that trading for Ryan Church or signing Trot Nixon wouldn’t fulfill the team’s goal and seems unlikely.  Options such as Geoff Jenkins or Jacque Jones could be pursued, however.

Pirates, Braves Still Talking Swap

By Tim Dierkes | January 7, 2007 at 9:41am CDT

The Mike Gonzalez for Adam LaRoche trade rumor lives on.  However, as we’ve read at Bucco Blog numerous times, John Schuerholz has always wanted to add Paul Maholm or Jose Castillo to the deal.

Bucco Blog recently sat down with an NL East scout to discuss LaRoche and whether he’d be a good fit in Pittsburgh.  Take a look.

Red Sox Targeting Closer?

By Tim Dierkes | December 27, 2006 at 12:59pm CDT

The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo has a J.D. Drew update for us.  It may be that Boras does not want to revise Drew’s contract given that Boras’s surgeon gave Drew’s shoulder the thumbs up.

More intriguing is a line at the end of the post – the Red Sox are targeting a trade for a closer and are targeting one of Chad Cordero, Brad Lidge, and Mike Gonzalez.

Pirates/Yankees/Braves Deal About Complete

By Tim Dierkes | December 22, 2006 at 9:13pm CDT

Bucco Blog is reporting tonight that the oft rumored three-team trade between the Yankees, Braves, and Pirates is all but complete.

Mike Gonzalez is taking a requested physical for the Yankees today and, if he passes, it looks like he will be a Yankee for Christmas. The Pirates will be getting Adam LaRoche and the Braves will get Melky Cabrera and at least one unidentified Pirate who is thought to be either Nate McLouth or Jose Castillo. There are a couple versions of this trade running according to Bucco Blog so more as we hear it.

Latest On Adam LaRoche

By Tim Dierkes | December 21, 2006 at 9:48am CDT

This thing just won’t die.  John Perrotto reports that the Pirates’ talks with Atlanta about Adam LaRoche are "picking up steam again."

The Braves originally wanted Paul Maholm, but are backing off and could go for Mike Gonzalez and Jose Castillo/Chris Duffy.  Bucco Blog has been on this one for a long time.  Perrotto writes that the Bucs want Kyle Davies in there if it’s going to be a four-player trade.

Meanwhile, the Yankees wouldn’t include a second player for Gonzalez and the Red Sox aren’t offering anything interesting.

Latest On Yankees and Mike Gonzalez

By Tim Dierkes | December 19, 2006 at 1:27pm CDT

A baseball source indicated to MLBTradeRumors.com that the Yankees and Pirates are working on a trade that could be Mike Gonzalez and Nate McLouth for Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera.  This is backed up by our good friend Jake at Bucco Blog, where Gonzalez, Kennedy, and Cabrera were mentioned in a recent podcast.

Of the four, the player with which I was least familiar was Kennedy.  The right-handed starter celebrates his 22nd birthday today.  Baseball America ranked Kennedy fifth among Yankee prospects.  BA’s John Manuel indicates Kennedy has excellent command with an upper 80s fastball and a sinking changeup.  He manages to keep the ball down.  Kennedy is still a ways off from the bigs and should start ’07 at high Class A.

I should note that as a 2006 draft pick, Kennedy can’t be traded until one year after he signed, which would be approximately July 15, 2007.  Given that a player to be named later must be named six months in advance, the Pirates and Yankees would have to wait about a month to make such a deal official.  After speaking to a couple of baseball guys, I can tell you for a fact that there is precedent for agreeing to trades in December involving June draft picks from the same year.  Kennedy is fair game for discussion.

Melky Cabrera To Braves?

By Tim Dierkes | December 16, 2006 at 11:16am CDT

Ken Davidoff of Newsday has amended yesterday’s Melky for Mike Gonzalez rumor.  The latest one is Melky Cabrera to Atlanta, Mike Gonzalez to the Yankees, and Adam LaRoche to Pittsburgh.  See, everyone’s happy.  Melky could handle LF for the Braves in 2007 and then switch to center after that.

Davidoff mentions that such a deal could pave the way for one more year of Bernie Williams.  Not sure if the Bucs could get more, but I think snagging LaRoche and his 35 HR potential would be a fine return.  LaRoche would still have three years of service time under the Pirates’ control.  The team could return to contention in 2008 if the young pitchers come along.

Melky Cabrera For Mike Gonzalez?

By Tim Dierkes | December 16, 2006 at 12:34am CDT

John Perrotto of the Beaver County Times reports that the Yankees is the most likely destination for southpaw reliever Mike Gonzalez.  Apparently Brian Cashman is willing to part with 22 year-old outfielder Melky Cabrera straight up.

Cabrera held his own as a rookie, batting .280/.360/.391 in 460 ABs and playing the fourth best defensive LF in baseball, according to Bill James’s panel of experts.  What’s more, Baseball Between The Numbers indicates that a typical player can be expected to improve his offensive output by about 15% from his age 22 to age 23 season.  Even in dealing Cabrera, the Yanks would retain the real prize among their position-player prospects: Jose Tabata.  Tabata could be patrolling right field in New York by the second half of ’08.

Gonzalez could be groomed as a possible successor to Mariano Rivera; he has three years of service time left before free agency.  However, Perrotto indicates that the Pirates want more than just Cabrera for Gonzalez.

Meanwhile, Bucco Blog thinks the entire rumor is bunk.  Jake makes a fine point – that Dave Littlefield is in no rush to trade Gonzalez and will simply sit back and wait until the unbeatable offer comes along.
