Nick Adenhart Killed In Car Accident

By Tim Dierkes | April 9, 2009 at 5:07pm CDT

5:07pm: According to Mike DiGiovanna and Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times, Adenhart and friends Courtney Stewart and Henry Pearson were killed.  The fourth friend, Jon Wilhite, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

3:12pm: Yahoo's Tim Brown and Kevin Kaduk have reactions to the Adenhart tragedy.  Baseball America profiles his career, and also has a statement from Angels GM Tony Reagins.  MLB.com's Lyle Spencer also has a nice tribute.

10:16am: Awful news today.  TMZ reports that Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident early this morning.  Two others (one affiliated with the Angels organization) were killed in the crash, and the offender was caught and hospitalized.  The 22 year-old had just tossed six scoreless innings the night before, the best performance of his young career.

NBC Los Angeles and the L.A. Times have more on the story.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Teixeira, Burnett, Sherrill

By Tim Dierkes | July 24, 2008 at 9:18am CDT

Here’s the latest from Ken Rosenthal, who should probably take a vacation in August.

  • The D’Backs inquired on Mark Teixeira, but a trade is unlikely.  Tex might be the best available hitter, as Matt Holliday seems likely to stay put.
  • The Rockies scouted Nick Adenhart’s last start.  The Angels have more interest in Brian Fuentes than Holliday.
  • Tons of scouts converged on Camden Yards last night to watch A.J. Burnett and George Sherrill pitch (those hoping to see Sherrill were disappointed).  The Cardinals, Phillies, Yankees, Brewers, Marlins, Dodgers, and Tigers all had scouts there to watch at least one of the pitchers.
  • Rosenthal says trade interest in Burnett "remains minimal," as teams fear the pitcher’s contract.
  • The Orioles are taking a look at the Brewers’ Triple A team, but it is believed that they are reluctant to part with more prospects.
  • The A’s chose first baseman Chris Carter over Emilio Bonifacio in the Dan Haren trade.

Angels Balk At Price For Holliday

By Tim Dierkes | July 19, 2008 at 11:46pm CDT

Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times does not expect the Angels to swing a deal for Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday.  Trading young pitching is generally against the Angels’ philosophy.

Shaikin says the Rockies would demand prospect Nick Adenhart for starters, and the Angels might consider that.  However, the Rockies also want Howie Kendrick and one of Ervin Santana or Joe Saunders.  The Angels wouldn’t give up that type of package for Miguel Cabrera last winter, and they won’t give in for Holliday.

I’ve defended Holliday in many MLBTR chats; I think he is capable of a .900 OPS away from Coors Field.  But based on the rumors, the Rockies are asking for too much for a year and two months of him.

Sherman’s Latest: Adenhart, Burnett, Niese, Ibanez

By Tim Dierkes | July 14, 2008 at 5:38pm CDT

Joel Sherman of the New York Post has been digging up rumors left and right – here, here, and here in recent days.  Let’s discuss.

  • The Angels have "hinted at a willingness to build a deal around pitching prospect Nick Adenhart."  This would apparently involve Mark Teixeira or Matt Holliday.
  • The Phillies made an initial offer last week for A.J. Burnett, and the Jays were thoroughly unimpressed.  The Phillies won’t discuss prospects Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson, or Greg Golson in trades.
  • The Yankees have zero interest in Burnett.
  • The A’s are willing to move Joe Blanton.  He’s not perfect, but he can eat innings and is under team control through 2010.
  • Six games out of the wild card with a league-best offense, the Rangers don’t look like sellers.
  • At least ten teams watched Mets’ Double A starter Jon Niese pitch Saturday.  He’s their top trade chip given the unavailability of Fernando Martinez.
  • The Pirates have their eye on the Yankees’ Ross Ohlendorf, if the Yanks become buyers for players like Damaso Marte or Xavier Nady.
  • Three Raul Ibanez suitors are named: the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, and Red Sox.
  • At least nine teams are monitoring Freddy Garcia: the Yankees, Mets, Astros, Rangers, Royals, Red Sox, Phillies, Tigers, and White Sox.  We’ve seen the Braves, Rays, and Cubs mentioned too.  Garcia’s agent isn’t up for an ’09 option with his client.  A-Rod is said to be pushing for the Yankees to sign him.
  • Sherman notes a rumor around the game that has Pat Gillick becoming Mariners president next year, and Brian Cashman coming on as his GM.

Angels In Need Of Another Arm?

By Aaron Shinsano | March 16, 2008 at 9:28pm CDT

At the end of his most recent column Ken Rosenthal posits a nightmare scenario for the Angles, going back to 2001 when the Mariners cracked out to a 20-4 start to seize the AL West crown before May Day. With John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar on the shelf for at least 4-6 weeks, should the Angels be concerned going into 2008? Is a move to pick up an extra starter in order?

The team is looking at filling 14-16 starts. With a surplus of outfielders the Angels are certainly in position to make a move. They could opt for a back of rotation innings eater like the Brewers Chris Capuano or the Reds’ Matt Belisle. Or, the team could really make a splash and dive head first into the Joe Blanton sweepstakes. David Bush might fill out the rotation nicely, through April and beyond.

Another possibility is a move toward the scrap heap, which got a slight upgrade this past week with the addition of Horacio Ramirez. Think Horacio might like a shot at the April 11 contest up at Safeco? How about reuniting brothers Jeff and Jared Weaver for one last sentimental run? And then there’s always the possibility of getting Southern Cali comfort David Wells off the couch for a month or two of solid work.

The LA Times sees General Manager Tony Reagins looking in-house to try and bridge the gap. Lefty Joe Saunders and righty Ervin Santana become your No. 3 and 4 starters, and Dustin Moseley, who made eight starts for the team in 2007, becomes your No. 5. Pencil in young gun Nick Adenhart for an outside shot at getting some innings, if not as a starter possibly as a long-reliever.

Aaron Shinsano writes for East Windup Chronicle.

Latest Miguel Cabrera Trade Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 2:57pm CDT

You can check out the old thread here, based on Rosenthal’s Cabrera/Willis to Detroit rumor.  ESPN’s Peter Gammons has an update on the Cabrera situation involving the Angels.

Gammons says the Marlins and Angels are "serious about moving Cabrera to the Angels."  The current rumor: Howie Kendrick, Nick Adenhart, Jeff Mathis, and one other prospect.

Heyman’s Latest: Santana, Bedard, Willis

By Tim Dierkes | December 3, 2007 at 5:49pm CDT

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 5:48pm: Jayson Stark confirms the Reds’ interest in Willis.  However he suggests that the Marlins would ask for Homer Bailey and then some in return.

FROM 12-3-07 at 11:41am:

SI.com’s Jon Heyman checks in with the latest hot stove banter he’s hearing.  There’s some confusion here as Heyman has contrary info to other published sources.

  • Heyman believes Johan Santana is "more likely than not" to get traded at the Meetings, and quite possibly today.
  • Heyman says the Red Sox and Yankees are the two teams Santana would waive his veto power for, running contrary to LENIII’s recent note.
  • Heyman reports that the Mets offered Gomez/Humber/Heilman for Erik Bedard, though as you may recall Roger Rubin said it was Lastings Milledge and not Gomez.  Whatever it was, the Orioles weren’t impressed with the offer.  Heyman says the Mets feel they still have a chance.  The Dodgers, Mariners, and loser of Santana will be in on Bedard as well.
  • Heyman seems to indicate the Marlins are still asking for Adenhart and Ervin Santana in a Miguel Cabrera deal, despite Peter Gammons’ comment this morning.
  • The Reds may pursue Dontrelle Willis.  I was thinking they might, the fit makes sense.  A package with Josh Hamilton and one of the Reds’ stud pitchers might be required though.  Also keep in mind that Joe Frisaro said the Marlins plan to keep Willis at least until July.
  • Heyman suggests the Mets could re-acquire Xavier Nady to play right field for them.

Details On Angels’ Cabrera Offer

By Tim Dierkes | December 3, 2007 at 10:07am CDT

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 10am: Peter Gammons says the Marlins are no longer insisting on both Adenhart and Santana.  He thinks the deal can work.

FROM 12-2-07 at 2pm:

Jon Heyman has the latest on the Miguel Cabrera situation.  As you know, the Angels are frustrated but have left the door open for the Marlins to approach them regarding their offer.

We also knew that the offer had both Howie Kendrick and Jeff Mathis in it.  The other players: one of Nick Adenhart or Ervin Santana, plus a "mid-level" pitching prospect.  The Marlins wanted both Adenhart and Santana, prompting the Angels to throw up their hands. Marlins ownership (Loria and Samson) are the ones pushing for both pitchers.

The Angels’ original offer stands, and they’ll wait to see if the Marlins decide to take it.  Heyman lists the Angels, Dodgers, Giants, and White Sox as those most serious in Cabrera, with the Rangers, Indians, and Mets also placing calls.  The Mets, eh?  That’s a new one.

Angels, Marlins At Cabrera Impasse

By Tim Dierkes | November 30, 2007 at 6:33pm CDT

The Angels are a bit frustrated in the Miguel Cabrera dealings.  According to Jayson Stark, they’ve told the Marlins to come swing by their suite whenever they’re ready to give a little on their demands.

In the deal for sure: Howie Kendrick and Jeff Mathis.  One of Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, and Nick Adenhart would be included as well.  However, the Fish want two of those starters.  The Halos won’t do it, but might be able to give one starter plus Reggie Willits.  Either way it’s going to be a major haul.

It wouldn’t be impossible to get Cabrera for three players, but they’d have to be damn good ones.  It’s always fascinating to watch the Marlins replenish their system.

Hunter Signing Won’t Stop Rolling Angels

By Tim Dierkes | November 24, 2007 at 10:54am CDT

UPDATE: Some added info from yesterday’s Miami Herald.  It sounds like the Angels are willing to part with Reggie Willits, Howie Kendrick, and a catcher.  Not a bad haul.  However the Marlins are apparently insisting on the inclusion of top pitching prospect Nick Adenhart as well.

Just because the Angels dropped $90 million on Torii Hunter doesn’t mean they won’t continue to make deals this off-season. Specifically, the two players most linked to them — Miguel Cabrera and Miguel Tejada — are still hot on the radar, according to GM Tony Reagins.

"All I can say is I’m going to be looking at some other things to make us better," Reagins said. "The winter meetings are coming up, and I’m sure we’ll have more discussions. I’m going to be open-minded."

Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times opines that the acquisition of Hunter could make it easier to incur the loss of Howie Kendrick, a potential major chip in a Cabrera trade. Other players sought by the Marlins are catcher Jeff Mathis, pitcher Nick Adenhart, and one of Joe Saunders, Jered Weaver, or Ervin Santana. That’s quite steep asking price, but in line with the Marlins demands from the Dodgers of Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, Andy LaRoche, and one more prospect.

The deal for Tejada would be less costly, but could cost the Angels SS Erick Aybar. Since the Halos want to move Tejada to third, that could mean starting Chone Figgins at short, or, as Tim mentioned the other day, bringing back David Eckstein.

Joe Pawlikowski is co-author of River Ave. Blues.
