Chacon Placed On Waivers

By Tim Dierkes | June 26, 2008 at 4:24pm CDT

THURSDAY, 4:24pm: Chacon has been placed on waivers and will be released without pay assuming he clears.

WEDNESDAY, 10:21pm: An explanation for the suspension has come out.  Chacon had an altercation with GM Ed Wade, throwing him to the floor at one point.  What little trade value Chacon might have had is gone now.

8:01pm: It was only a matter of time.  Shawn Chacon, unhappy with his bullpen demotion, has asked the Astros for a trade.  He says he signed to be a starter and turned down more money to relieve for other teams.  Chacon would like to be released if the Astros can’t trade him.  The ’Stros reacted by suspending him.

Teams probably won’t be champing at the bit to add Chacon, who was predictably lousy in 15 starts.

Odds and Ends: Bonds, Davis, Chulk, Ichiro

By Tim Dierkes | June 26, 2008 at 2:28pm CDT

Time for some random linkage.

  • I’ll be on XM Radio today at about 5pm CST – channels 176-189 with Mike Ferrin.
  • The Dodgers signed Jerome Williams – remember him?
  • Viva El Birdos runs through starting pitchers who might be on the Cardinals’ radar.
  • Sam Mellinger of the KC Star takes a look at Dayton Moore’s trade record.  Meanwhile, Joe Posnanski explains why the Royals should sign Barry Bonds.
  • Ken Rosenthal doesn’t want to let Ed Wade off the hook in the Shawn Chacon dustup.
  • Red Reporter thinks the Reds are winning the Edinson Volquez–Josh Hamilton swap.
  • Rangers first base prospect Chris Davis is getting the call.
  • Russell Branyan has been training his eyes.
  • "Unsubstantiated report" – the Phillies might have interest in recently-designated reliever Vinnie Chulk.
  • Mariners beat writer Geoff Baker expects the team to shop Ichiro.
  • Buster Olney sees the Rays as a sleeper in the C.C. Sabathia derby.
  • Omar Minaya defends the Luis Castillo signing.

Odds and Ends: Lowe, Arroyo, Chacon

By Tim Dierkes | June 23, 2008 at 12:30pm CDT

Here’s today’s link roundup.

  • Jacque Jones has elected free agency.  Does he have anything left?
  • Derek Lowe, Scott Boras, Ned Colletti, and Joe Torre had some kind of cryptic meeting.
  • Draft nugget: the D’Backs were eyeing Allan Dykstra as their first-round pick until the Padres took him.
  • Jason Rosenberg interviewed agent Matt Sosnick.
  • Bronson Arroyo commented on the recent trade rumors.  I think this rumor, in particular.
  • Shawn Chacon, demoted to the pen, is not a happy camper.
  • Koji Uehara is also going to the bullpen.
  • Brandon Webb was affected by his contract negotiations.
  • ESPN’s Keith Law joined the Drunk Jays Fans podcast to chat about the recent turmoil in Toronto.
  • Joe Saunders, originally drafted by the Phillies, had a bad experience (as he tells it).

Astros Sign Chacon

By Tim Dierkes | February 20, 2008 at 6:47pm CDT

WEDNESDAY, 2:42pm:The deal is finalized at one year, $2MM.

MONDAY, 9:55pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Astros are close to a one-year deal with Shawn Chacon.  He’d join the team’s rotation.

I like the idea of adding some depth.  But is depth really added if the pitcher posts a 5.50 ERA?  Chacon has been over that mark as a starter in ’06 and ’07.  The Astros hope Chacon can find his Yankees’ magic of ’05, when he posted a 3.44 ERA in 24 starts despite a 1.25 K/BB ratio.  On the plus side, Chacon was legitimately solid as a reliever in ’07 and can be shifted to the pen if necessary.

Astros Win Loretta Case

By Tim Dierkes | February 19, 2008 at 9:46am CDT

Arbiters ruled in favor of the Astros over Mark Loretta today, saving the team $2.15MM.  I guess the 20% pay cut thing doesn’t apply here.  With the Jose Valverde savings, that makes $3.65MM for Houston.  That’s probably right around what Shawn Chacon will get.

Three hearings remain undecided; the players will probably snag at least one victory in the cases of Ryan Howard, Oliver Perez, and Francisco Rodriguez.  Keith Law explains again why the Phils paying Howard more than they have to does not make sense.

Historically teams have won 57.7% of cases.  So we might’ve expected the teams to be 3-2 instead of 5-0 this year but it’s not exactly a huge upset.

Astros Show Interest In Chacon

By Tim Dierkes | February 12, 2008 at 3:22pm CDT

The Astros look to be heading into camp with Roy Oswalt heading their rotation, but not much else. They used 10 different starters last year, and the only one who made more than 10 starts and had an ERA under 4.50 was Oswalt. So they surely could be looking at the free agent starters. Word is that they’ve made an offer to Shawn Chacon.

There’s no word on exactly what the offer was, but from the article it appears it’s a Major League deal. It’s also uncertain if the teams are even close as far as terms. I’d assume that the Astros offered a one-year deal.

I’m not really familiar with the Astros system, other than it’s ranked near or at the bottom of the league. They have a couple of young guys listed on the 40-man roster: Paul Estrada, Samuel Gervacio,  Brad James, Fernando Nieve, Felipe Paulino, Chad Reineke, and Wesley Wright, though I know nothing about any of them, other than that they’re my age or younger. They also have former Padre Jack Cassel. Do any ’Stros fans see them as being better than Chacon?

Chacon has shown flashes of solidness in his career. He was stellar in the first half of 2003, going 8-2 with a 3.17 ERA through June 2. The wheels came off after that, though, as he allowed 12 runs over 3.2 innings in his next start against Kansas City, pumping his ERA up more than a run. He made 10 starts after that game, most mediocre, a couple really good, and a few real bad ones. He ended the season early due to injury.

He is perhaps most famous for his role in 2005 with the Yankees, when he pitched brilliantly in August and September, essentially leading the team, along with Jason Giambi, to the playoffs.

His problem, as I see it, has always been that he walks too many guys. He’s got a good curveball, but seemingly doesn’t have the fastball to make it a knockout offering. He’s looking to be a starter, despite success last year in Pittsburgh’s pen. He definitely has a shot to start in Houston.

– Joe

Orioles Discuss Lohse, Villone, Chacon

By Tim Dierkes | January 24, 2008 at 8:04am CDT

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun says the Orioles are looking at various one or two-year stopgap free agents.

  • According to Scott Boras, he and Andy MacPhail have discussed six or seven of his clients.  Among them are Kyle Lohse, Ron Villone, and Corey Patterson.  Lohse would probably not sign for two years, I’m guessing.  Or in the American League.  Who else might they have discussed?  Jeff Weaver?  Anyway, it’s nice to see the Orioles getting along with Boras!
  • Zrebiec notes that the O’s have had "preliminary talks" with the agents for Shawn Chacon and Steve Trachsel.  Looks like MacPhail just wants some warm bodies for the back end of the rotation.  Chacon seems to prefer to the Pirates, and a return to Pittsburgh looks "increasingly logical."
  • Zbrebiec says Rod Barajas seems to be headed elsewhere despite "significant discussions" with Baltimore.

Odds and Ends: Giles, Chacon, Durbin

By Tim Dierkes | December 19, 2007 at 2:17pm CDT

Here are today’s random rumor tidbits.

  • The Rox are interested in Marcus Giles for their second base opening.  Giles was awful last year, they should just try something internal.  Other Rockies notes: contracts with Kip Wells and Luis Vizcaino aren’t quite finalized, and they may ink Victor Zambrano to a minor league deal.  UPDATE: Wells, plus Mark Redman, are done deals.
  • The Pirates still have their eye on Shawn Chacon and Chad Durbin.  That”ll put butts in the seats.  Also, Jake of Bucco Blog weighs in on a new Pirates hire.
  • Speaking of Durbin, did he comment on this blog and suggest he’s headed to the NL?  I’m not sure.
  • Drays Bay talked to Gerry Hunsicker.  Seth Speaks talked to Pat Neshek.
  • New prize added to our Hot Stove Hysteria contest – three months free of Scout.com access.
  • Things are mostly quiet with the Brewers, but this Tom Haudricourt blog post notes tepid discussions for Scott Rolen, Hank Blalock, and Andre Ethier.

Rockies Still Looking For Relief

By Tim Dierkes | December 10, 2007 at 2:04pm CDT

With LaTroy Hawkins out of the picture, the Rockies have turned their attention to Shawn Chacon, Luis Vizcaino, and Kip Wells.

The Rockies could offer Chacon familiarity and a one-year deal.  They wouldn’t offer him a chance to start, which he might get elsewhere.  It’s been said he seeks three years.  Matthew Cerrone says the Mets, Tigers, Astros, and Brewers have expressed interest in the 30 year-old.

Vizcaino is looking for Linebrink money, which doesn’t seem like something the Rox would do.  Well is trying to reinvent himself as a setup man, and a one-year, $2.5MM deal could be an interesting bargain play.
