Giants Outright Walker, Correia, Hennessey

By Alejandro Leal | October 11, 2008 at 11:15am CDT

The Giants shuffled their 40-man roster this week, cutting ties with pitchers Tyler Walker, Kevin Correia, and Brad Hennessey. All three were eligible for arbitration and probably would’ve received significant raises, but are now set to become free agents.

According to the SF Chronicle’s John Shea, the Giants would’ve traded them, but all three cleared waivers without drawing interest from other clubs.

Giants Rumors: Winn, Walker, Aurilia

By Tim Dierkes | August 17, 2008 at 11:47pm CDT

Let’s dig into a couple of blog posts from Giants beat writers Henry Schulman and Andrew Baggarly.

  • Schulman says the Giants’ front office is divided on whether to trade right fielder Randy Winn this winter.  Nate Schierholtz has a .931 OPS in Triple A this year, but can he be a capable regular in 2009?  Winn makes $8.25MM in ’09, and can block trades to ten teams.  The Giants could take advantage of a weak free agent market for center fielders, if Winn can still handle the position.
  • Tyler Walker, owner of a 4.95 ERA, expects to be non-tendered by the Giants rather than given an arbitration raise from his current $750K.  Schulman thinks Walker could still return on a lesser deal.
  • Baggarly looks at Rich Aurilia, who has drawn little trade interest this year (though published reports have mentioned the Mets and Rays).  Baggarly thinks the Giants need to keep him around this year to remain respectable at third base, and could even entertain the possibility for ’09.  Aurilia has a strong connection to the Giants organization.
  • Shea has an article up discussing possiblities for third base next year, mentioning Adrian Beltre, Casey Blake, Joe Crede, and Hank Blalock.

Perrotto’s Latest: Waivers, Extensions, Garcia, Braves

By Steve Adams | August 10, 2008 at 2:46pm CDT

John Perrotto over at Baseball Prospectus has his Every Given Sunday column up:

  • Perrotto lists off several people which he believes are the most likely to be made available if and when they clear waivers. While the list is comprised of a lot of the usual suspects this August (Greg Maddux, Jarrod Washburn, Paul Byrd, Randy Winn), Perrotto lists some other names that we haven’t seen as much: Francisco Cordero, Tyler Walker, Todd Jones, Jose Bautista, and Doug Mientkiewicz. Perrotto also says that he feels Aubrey Huff has the best chance to be traded of any impact bat available.
  • Perrotto states that the Rockies would like to sign both Garrett Atkins and Matt Holliday long-term. If unsuccessful, they will both be on the trading block this offseason.
  • The Pirates would like to sign Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit long-term as well, buying out their arbitration years.
  • Perrotto lists the Yankees as the front-runners to sign Freddy Garcia. The Mets and Rays are also suitors for Garcia, though I personally don’t think Garcia makes sense for the Rays.
  • The Yankees have "little interest" in pursuing Manny Ramirez this offseason, despite possible reports that Manny would like to play for them.
  • The Twins would still like to add a late-inning reliever this season to boost their bullpen as the AL Central race winds down.
  • The Braves’ top priority this offseason is pursuing a front-line starter, Perrotto says. He lists possible candidates as: C.C. Sabathia, Ben Sheets, Ryan Dempster, Derek Lowe, and Jon Garland. Seems a bit odd to consider the last three "front-line," though Dempster has certainly been impressive this season.

Rays Interested In Tyler Walker

By Tim Dierkes | July 24, 2008 at 8:35am CDT

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Rays have interest in reliever Tyler Walker.  Walker made 20 appearances for the Rays back in ’06, saving ten games.  He then had Tommy John surgery and was released.

Walker, 32, has a solid 2.36 K/BB ratio this year but has been susceptible to the longball.  He’s earning $750K this year.  It probably wouldn’t take much to acquire him.

Several Giants Relievers Available

By Cork Gaines | May 30, 2008 at 11:24am CDT

Earlier this morning we saw a report that indicated that Erick Threets may be available for the right price. Now, according to Andrew Baggarly, the Giants have made most of their middle relievers available as well as a couple of pitchers in Triple A.

The Giants have informed other clubs that relievers Tyler Walker, Jack Taschner and Vinnie Chulk are available in fair-value deals. The club also is soliciting offers for Erick Threets and Brad Hennessey, who is starting for Triple-A Fresno.

Walker, Chulk and Hennessey are all arbitration-eligible at the end of the season. Chulk is having the best season of the group with a 132 ERA+, though Walker has experience as a closer. Hennessey is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA in four starts for Triple A Fresno after being demoted and converted to a starter.

Brian Sabean seems to be going against comments he made only two weeks ago when he suggested that the Giants would not trade away their veteran players during the season.

Baggarly indicates that this shift is due to the emergence of young pitchers as well as the earlier-than-expected demand for relief pitchers from contending teams.

Cork Gaines writes for Rays Index and can be reached here.

Stark’s Latest: Davis, Valdez, Roberts, Lofton

By Tim Dierkes | March 10, 2008 at 9:30pm CDT

ESPN’s Jayson Stark checks in with a blog entry jam-packed with rumorage.

  • Stark says the Giants are shopping Rich Aurilia, Ray Durham, Steve Kline, Randy Winn, Tyler Walker, Rajai Davis, and Merkin Valdez.  The vets we knew about; the last two are a surprise.  Probably stems from both being out of options.
  • Brian Roberts update: Stark talked to a club official who’s in touch with the Cubs and O’s.  That guy expects a deal to be done next week.  Plus, Stark sees the O’s as an active suitor for Kyle Lohse at the right price.
  • Stark confirms the rumblings that the Rays have checked in on Kenny Lofton.  Lofton could be a nice bargain this year for a couple mil.

Giants Rumors: Cabrera, Rolen, Walker

By Tim Dierkes | November 16, 2007 at 7:51pm CDT

Finally some Giants rumors!  I know a few fans have been clamoring for the team to join the hot stove rumblings.  Andrew Baggarly has an article here and Henry Schulman has one here.  Let’s discuss.

  • The Giants have no one to play third base.  Kevin Frandsen could technically do it but they prefer him at second.  Thankfully, they will pass on Pedro Feliz.  Feliz – get this – wants a three year deal.  He’s on the Brewers’ radar, by the way.
  • Miguel Cabrera is one option, though Baggarly doesn’t see the Giants offering up Tim Lincecum to jump into the fray.  However Schulman’s source says the Giants have been "one of the most aggressive teams" after Cabrera.  Who to believe?
  • Baggarly’s team source doesn’t expect to go after the available Scott Rolen, given his health questions and contract.  Free agents Morgan Ensberg and Mike Lamb seem more likely options at third base.
  • Brian Wilson and the newly signed Tyler Walker will mix it up for the closer job.  Brian Sabean doesn’t anticipate dropping big bucks/losing a draft pick for Scott Linebrink.  Nor are the Giants likely to hit up the Japanese market.
