Xavier Nady

Padres Sign Xavier Nady

By Steve Adams | January 7, 2014 at 12:55pm CDT

The Padres have signed first baseman/outfielder Xavier Nady to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training, according to MLB.com's Corey Brock (on Twitter).

Nady, a client of Scott Boras, last appeared in the Majors in 2012, batting .184/.253/.316 in 166 plate appearances between the Nationals and Giants. By signing in San Diego, he returns to the organization that drafted in the second round back in 2000. Nady spent parts of five seasons in the Majors with the Padres and was a semi-regular player in the Majors in the middle of the last decade.

In his best years, from 2005-08, Nady hit .284/.339/.474, averaging 486 plate appearances and 19 home runs per season with the Padres, Pirates, Mets and Yankees. He split last season between the Triple-A affiliates for the Rockies and Royals, posting a robust .296/.360/.456 slash line with 15 homers and 26 doubles.

Rockies Sign Xavier Nady

By Zachary Links | June 30, 2013 at 9:42am CDT

The Rockies have signed Xavier Nady to a minor league deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter).  The Boras Corporation client was released by the Royals yesterday.

Nady was hitting .310/.382/.486 with eleven homers in 289 plate appearances for Triple-A Omaha and a scout who saw Nady recently said that he is swinging the bat as well as he has seen in a while.  That's far more promising than his 166 big league plate appearances last season for the Nationals and Giants in which he hit just .184/.253/.316.

Royals Release Xavier Nady

By Jeff Todd | June 29, 2013 at 11:48pm CDT

The Royals have released outfielder/first baseman Xavier Nady, according to the Pacific Coast League's transactions page. Nady had been playing on a minor league deal that he agreed to after being cut in advance of the Article XX(B) free agent retention bonus deadline, back in late March. It is not presently known whether Nady exercised an opt out clause to trigger his release, or indeed whether he had any such clause in his contract.

Nady was hitting a robust .310/.382/.486 in 289 plate appearances for the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers. After a well-documented power outage over his last several seasons, moreover, Nady had swatted a promising 11 home runs thus far for Omaha. In a combined 166 big league plate appearances last season for the Nationals and Giants, Nady hit just .184/.253/.316.

Royals Re-Sign Xavier Nady, George Sherrill

By Zachary Links | March 27, 2013 at 10:37am CDT

The Royals announced that they have re-signed outfielder Xavier Nady and left-hander George Sherrill. Kansas City cut both players in advance of yesterday's deadline for Article XX(B) free agents in order to avoid paying them a $100K retention bonus.

Nady, 34, hit .184/.253/.316 in 166 plate appearances for the Nationals and Giants last season.  The veteran posted a strong .289/.342/.480 batting line in 2006-09 for the Mets, Pirates, and Yankees but hasn't looked quite the same since undergoing Tommy John surgery during the '09 campaign.  Since then, he's hit .237/.288/.347 in 260 games between four organizations.

Sherrill, who turns 36 in April, appeared in just two games for the Mariners last season before a torn UCL in his left elbow led to Tommy John surgery.  Sherrill has a 3.77 ERA, 8.9 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 across parts of nine big league seasons.

Royals Release Nady, Sherrill

By Steve Adams | March 25, 2013 at 11:44pm CDT

The Royals have released Xavier Nady and George Sherrill, reports Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star (on Twitter). Both players signed minor league deals with Kansas City this offseason, and the organization hopes to re-sign both.

Both Nady and Sherrill were Article XX(B) free agents, meaning the Royals would have had to pay each player a $100K retention bonus if they remained within the organization by noon ET tomorrow. Instead, general manager Dayton Moore will have the opportunity to work out new deals with the pair, but they're both free to explore options with other teams.

Nady, 34, batted .184/.253/.316 between the Nationals and Giants last season. From 2006-09, Nady posted a strong .289/.342/.480 batting line in 410 games for the Mets, Pirates and Yankees. However, his 2009 campaign was cut short when he needed Tommy John surgery, and he's never regained his form at the plate. Since returning from the injury, he's batted .237/.288/.347 in 260 games between four organizations.

Sherrill, who turns 36 in a few weeks, appeared in just two games for the Mariners last season before a torn UCL in his left elbow led to Tommy John surgery. He had yet to appear in a Spring Training game for the Royals, as his surgery didn't take place until May of last year. Sherrill has a 3.77 ERA, 8.9 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 in 324 1/3 Major League innings between the Mariners, Dodgers, Orioles and Braves.

Royals Sign Xavier Nady

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 14, 2012 at 9:39am CDT

The Royals announced that they signed outfielder Xavier Nady to a minor league contract. The deal figures to include an invitation to Spring Training, though the Royals won't confirm their list of invitees until later in the winter.

Nady spent the 2012 season with the Nationals and Giants, appearing in 59 games at the MLB level. The 34-year-old client of the Boras Corporation posted a .184/.253/.316 batting line in 166 plate appearances while playing left and right field. However, Nady has a career batting line of .270/.324/.432 in 11 MLB seasons. A right-handed hitter, Nady has a career .284/.352/.441 line against left-handers. In that respect he resembles Royals outfielder Jeff Francoeur, who also hits lefties better than he hits righties.

Giants To Sign Xavier Nady

By Zachary Links | August 4, 2012 at 8:43pm CDT

The Giants and veteran Xavier Nady have agreed to a minor league contract, club officials told Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com.  Andy Martino of the New York Daily News (via Twitter) first reported that the two sides were close to a deal.

Nady is taking batting practice with the club's Triple-A affiliate tonight and is likely to be activated tomorrow.  The Nationals designated Nady for assignment in late July before granting him his unconditional release on Sunday.

The 33-year-old has been out of action since mid-June due to a wrist injury.  Before that, Nady had a  .157/.211/.275 slash line with three homers in 109 plate appearances for Washington.  The veteran had interest from San Francisco over the winter but wound up inking a minor league deal with the Nats in March.
