Reds In Serious Talks With Cordero

By Tim Dierkes | November 23, 2007 at 11:52am CDT

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Reds have approached closer Francisco Cordero, and that the two sides are working towards a deal. This would figure to top the Brewers current offer of four years, $42 million. This would be a major step for a team that finished 18 games below .500 in baseball’s worst division in 2007.

According to Rosenthal, the Reds have emerged as front runners. Competing are the Brewers and a mystery team, possibly the Yankees, who expressed interest in Cordero if Mariano Rivera bolted town. The closer has since returned, though, likely eliminating the Yankees from consideration. The Astros are also believed to be interested in Cordero, though the same can be said for about 80 percent of the free agent market.

This would move David Weathers back to a setup role, where he would fit in well. The Reds bullpen would still be weak, but at least they’d improve on their league-worst 54.8 percent save conversion rate.

It appears that the Reds front office believes the team can contend in the next two years. Why else give big money (and forfeit a second round pick) for a big-name closer? The Reds have considerable young talent in Joey Votto, Josh Hamilton, Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips, and Edwin Encarnacion, in addition to Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn.

Combined with Scott Hatteberg, who had an effective year in limited duty, the Reds might actually have a logjam of sorts in the outfield and first base. Could they possibly move some of the excess for some pitching help? Adding another bullpen arm or a starter to go along with Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo, and Homer Bailey could be the keys to the Reds contention.

Royals Pursue Guillen, Reportedly Set With Yabuta

By Tim Dierkes | November 23, 2007 at 10:07am CDT

The Royals were in on the Torii Hunter sweepstakes, having offered five years and $70 million, with every intention of going higher if necessary. Now that the Angels have locked him up, Jose Guillen has become the "indisputable No. 1 on the Royals’ list of off-season targets."

“Obviously, our objective remains the same,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “We do want to acquire a right-handed bat to hit in the middle of our order, and we’ll keep working through every opportunity imaginable.”

Bob Dutton thinks that losing out on Hunter could have added benefits. In addition to acquiring the cheaper Guillen, the Royals could use the Hunter money to pursue RHPs Hiroki Kuroda or Carlos Silva.
Each is seeking a four-year, $40 million deal. Added with Guillen’s asking price of three years, $30 million (though that could come down with his steroid allegations), that’s the $70 million they were offering Hunter.

Dutton also reports that the Royals have a deal in place for RHP Yasuhiko Yabuta on a two-year deal for between $5 and $6 million, with a club option for 2010. The deal should be announced once Yabuta makes his way to the States for his physical.

Morning Tidbits

By Tim Dierkes | November 23, 2007 at 8:47am CDT

Hmm. Not much really going on this A.M. Hopefully we’ll see some rumors crop up as the day progresses. Until then, here are just a few teasers on this Black Friday.

  • Remember when the Blue Jays claimed Cory Haerther off waivers from the Cardinals? Well, now the Cardinals have claimed Haerther off waivers from the Blue Jays and have added him to the 40-man roster, thus protecting him from the Rule 5 draft.
  • "Indications are" that the Twins are talking with closer Joe Nathan about a contract extension. Nathan has one year left on his deal, and could price himself out of the Twins range. No word on the number offered.
  • C.J. Henry was a 2005 first-round draft choice of the Yankees. After a rough introduction to the pros, Henry was sent to the Phillies in 2006 as part of the Bobby Abreu deal. Well, the Phils have released him, and despite stories that he was going to play college basketball, he has re-signed with the Yanks.
  • Infielder Ramon Vazquez has re-upped with the Rangers for one year and $810,000. He hit .230/.300/.373 in 300 at bats in 2007.

Torii Hunter – Additional Thoughts

By Tim Dierkes | November 22, 2007 at 11:08am CDT

Random thoughts in the aftermath of the Torii Hunter shocker…

  • We can’t really say whether the Hunter signing was about money or winning, because a winning team made an offer far beyond any other club.  It is inconclusive.
  • U.S.S. Mariner notes that Hunter received the same contract Ichiro did, but he’s not the same caliber of player.
  • David Pinto sees a very old Angels outfield in the future.
  • The Rangers were at five years, $75MM with a club option for 2013.  Both Texas and the White Sox may now turn their attention to Aaron Rowand.  Suddenly his perception that he’s a $14MM player seems more realistic.
  • The Twins must be pleasantly surprised – they get the Angels’ 27th overall pick next June.  All the other teams thought to be in the mix for Hunter had their first round picks protected.  The loss of the pick just accentuates how much the Halos overpaid here.

Rockies Rumors: Herges, Torrealba

By Tim Dierkes | November 22, 2007 at 10:26am CDT

Troy E. Renck has the Rockies hot stove buzz, as usual.

  • The Rockies are close with reliever Matt Herges, but other teams remain in the mix.  It’s known that Herges wants a two-year deal and the Brewers are interested.
  • The Rockies are also making progress on a deal with catcher Yorvit Torrealba.  The Mets saw something they didn’t like in Torrealba, so he’s come back to the Rockies to talk.  Renck says the Rockies had previously offered two years and $7MM with a vesting option for 2010 (seems reasonable).  Now they might be able to get him without guaranteeing that third year.
  • Renck says Kaz Matsui may sign with the Cubs or Astros next week.  Matsui has priced himself out of the Rockies’ range.

Santana Counters Twins’ Offer

By Tim Dierkes | November 22, 2007 at 10:19am CDT

Sid Hartman was correct – Joe Christensen confirms today that the Twins did offer Johan Santana a five-year, $93MM deal (18.6MM annually).  The pact was designed to top Carlos Zambrano’s by $1.5MM.  Problem is that Santana isn’t 1.6% better than Zambrano.  He’s a lot better than Z.

Santana countered by asking for $126MM, according to Christensen.  His article implies that Santana asked for seven years in the counterproposal, since Santana’s agent cited Barry Zito’s deal and the dollar amount is the same.  The Twins balked at the counteroffer and expect to trade Santana.  This doesn’t compute, because the sides seem close.  I wonder – maybe Santana actually asked for $126MM over five years?  Santana could be a $25MM man on the open market, and maybe he’s not offering a hometown discount.  If Christensen’s source told him the number of years, he would’ve put that in the article.

Michael Silverman notes that the Red Sox will certainly be involved if the Twins start entertaining offers.  An offer of Coco Crisp, Clay Buchholz or Jon Lester, and a third solid prospect might be their proposal.  Seems that the Yanks might offer Melky Cabrera and Phil Hughes, while the Mets would start with Carlos Gomez.

Christensen’s article also adds that the Twins recently swapped contract proposals with closer Joe Nathan.  Even at a discount Nathan would have to ask for four years, $40MM.

Torii Hunter Signs With Angels

By Tim Dierkes | November 22, 2007 at 8:34am CDT

Who saw this one coming?  Now only did he sign on Thanksgiving Day, but Torii Hunter signed with the Angels.  The news broke a little after midnight.  It’s a five-year contract for $90MM.  That’s a surprising $18MM annually for those poor in math.  No one even knew the two sides were talking!  Hunter just isn’t an $18MM player to me.  I can see why he jumped on this.

The Halos now have six players for three outfield spots and one DH spot.  Hunter will always be in center, and Vlad will always be at DH or in right.  So then only two of Garret Anderson, Juan Rivera, Reggie Willits, and Gary Matthews Jr. will be in the lineup (unless someone goes to first base and knocks Casey Kotchman to the bench).

GM Tony Reagins says this doesn’t affect his other dealings, so perhaps he’s created these outfield and pitching surpluses to acquire Miguel Cabrera or Miguel Tejada.  Willits would be appealing to the Marlins, I imagine.

White Sox Sign Scott Linebrink

By Tim Dierkes | November 22, 2007 at 8:32am CDT

First reported by Bruce Levine of ESPN Sports Radio 1000 out of Chicago – the White Sox have signed free agent Scott Linebrink to a four-year, $19MM contract.  The Brewers have to be a bit disappointed, as Chicago’s 8th overall pick in next June’s draft is protected.  Instead they’ll get a second round pick from the Sox as compensation for the Type A reliever.

Four years is a long time to lock in the 31 year-old Linebrink.  He’s never pitched in the American League, and you have to think he’ll struggle.  This seems like a poor signing to me.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In

By Tim Dierkes | November 22, 2007 at 12:12am CDT

I read tons of baseball blogs; here are some posts I’d like to highlight that involve recent news here at MLBTR.

  • Aaron Gleeman calls out Torii Hunter for his quotes about wanting to play for a winner.
  • Matthew Cerrone sees the team’s Johnny Estrada acquisition as a no-lose move.
  • Let’s Go Tribe considers Masahide Kobayashi a fine value signing.
  • South Side Sox notes that the Orlando Cabrera–Jon Garland swap tilts toward the Sox because of the money and draft picks involved.  Baseball Musings also believes the Sox won the deal.
  • Talking Chop says Tom Glavine left the Braves on a sour note, and doesn’t want to see him pitching big games in 2008.
  • Pat Lackey isn’t jazzed with the Cubs’ pursuit of Kaz Matsui.
