2009 Amateur Draft

Odds & Ends: Draft, Rangers, Feliz

By Tim Dierkes | May 28, 2009 at 4:10pm CDT

Another collection of random links…

  • A fresh fantasy baseball mailbag over at RotoAuthority, where I address David Ortiz, Francisco Liriano, and more.
  • The Orioles claimed pitcher Dave Davidson off waivers from the Marlins and sent him to Triple A, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN.
  • Matt Belisle cleared waivers and accepted his Triple A assignment, according to Jack Etkin of Inside the Rockies.
  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo predicts the top 20 picks in the June draft.  Mike Minor to the Padres, Aaron Crow to the Pirates?
  • Rangers owner Tom Hicks might be willing to sell his controlling interest in the team, according to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.
  • Scott Lauber of The News Journal thinks Pedro Feliz is changing the Phillies' mind about his $5MM option for 2010 with his .307/.373/.433 start.  His 10% walk rate is a career best.
  • Joe Pawlikowski of River Ave. Blues discusses the Mark DeRosa-Yankees rumor.
  • Alexei Ramirez is being sued for $20MM in the Dominican Republic "for allegedly violating a contract he signed with local talent scouts before inking a major league contract."  Not sure how they arrived at that figure.

MLB Cuts Slots For June Draft

By Tim Dierkes | May 27, 2009 at 9:32am CDT

According to Murray Chass on Sunday (hat tip to Baseball America):

Bud Selig has repeatedly cautioned clubs about the economy, and at the owners’ meeting last Thursday he told them he was doing something about it and sternly advised them to listen. The commissioner told the owners that his office planned to roll back the recommended signing bonuses for the June 9 amateur draft by 10 percent.

Baseball America's Jim Callis confirmed Selig's plan.  The slots are confidential, but BA has estimates for last year's recommendations if you're a subscriber.  So what's the penalty for going over slot?  According to Chass:

Clubs enrage Selig when they exceed their slotted numbers, and he lets them know his feelings.

Scary!  Callis' take:

MLB can’t force teams to accept its recommendations, but it has exerted pressure on owners to toe the line and fined clubs that didn’t follow a set procedure before paying an above-slot bonus.

Odds & Ends: Braves, Peavy, Mets, Sabathia

By Tim Dierkes | May 26, 2009 at 12:30pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports that Mike MacDougal left the Nationals' Triple A club via an out clause, but could remain with the organization if they decide to promote him to the Majors.
  • Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution speculates on some outfield options for the Braves.
  • According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Chris Duffy accepted the Brewers' assignment to Triple A.  Duffy was designated for assignment on May 22nd.
  • For some reason, Scott Boras weighed in on the Padres' attempt to trade Jake Peavy (talking to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune).  Boras suggested it might be a breach of contract, but Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod isn't as offended.  Barry Rozner of the Daily Herald has more from Axelrod, who said, "the entire process was unfair."
  • Howard Megdal of SNY campaigns for the Mets to acquire a passable shortstop, while retaining Ramon Castro and Brian Schneider as catchers.
  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo looks at the middle infielders in the upcoming draft.  And MLB.com's Lisa Winston has a column on Grant Green.
  • Talking to Jack Curry of the New York Times, C.C. Sabathia wondered about his six-year old son's possible high school future in New Jersey.  Sabathia can choose to opt out of his contract after the 2011 season.  Is this anything?  The kid will be going to high school in eight years or so, so the contract will be up regardless.  More telling might be Sabathia's comments to Jayson Stark earlier this month.

Odds & Ends: Draft, Iwamura, Mets

By Eddie Schmid | May 24, 2009 at 8:06pm CDT

Some links to tide you over this Memorial Day Eve:

  • John Sickels at Minor League Ball lists last year's starters who posted a Win Share over 10 alongside their draft origins. Last week, Future Redbirds advised against risking a first round pick on high school pitchers.
  • MLB.com has a fan Q&A up with Pirates GM Neal Huntington, who believes this year's draft is deep in pitching but thin on quality college position players.
  • Akinori Iwamura will probably hit the DL after he suffered a nasty collision in today's game and was carted off the field. Joe Maddon will have a look at internal options to fill in for now.
  • With the Mets hurting badly, Ken Davidoff at Newsday acknowledges GM Omar Minaya has his work cut out for him. With Jose Reyes' lingering tendinitis in his right knee and his injured backups, Davidoff thinks Minaya should get an appraisal on Bobby Crosby. Davidoff also thinks the Mets should "aggressively" go after the rehabbing Ben Sheets and at least discuss Erik Bedard with the M's, despite the Mets' top prospects sitting at lower levels.

Draft Update: Strasburg, Ackley, Miller

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 22, 2009 at 1:23pm CDT

ESPN.com's Jason A. Churchill has an update on some of the most coveted draft-eligible players:

  • Stephen Strasburg left his Wednesday night start holding his back. The San Deigo State staff reported a "minor back cramp." Strasburg still managed to strike out six, allowing only four baserunners in 7.2 innings.
  • Vanderbilt lefty Mike Minor pitched well yesterday and though he's projected to go after the first round now, he could improve his standing.
  • Dustin Ackley hit two home runs against Duke and he has now "all but cemented himself as the No. 2 overall prospect in the draft." The Mariners have the second overall pick.
  • Texas high schooler Shelby Miller pitched a four-hit shoutout in front of a number of scouts and Rangers President Nolan Ryan. Miller is expected to be selected within the first five picks.

For the hottest prospects already with a major league organization, check out Baseball America's Prospect Hot Sheet.

Odds And Ends: Padres, Takatsu, Sano

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 22, 2009 at 12:18pm CDT

Links for Friday afternoon…

  • SI.com's Tom Verducci heard one GM argue that the Padres should trade Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez to re-stock the farm system.
  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo breaks down what will happen after Stephen Strasburg's drafted by the Nationals. He predicts that eight or nine college arms could go in the first 20 picks, if you count redrafts like Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers.
  • According to Mike Rutsey of the Toronto Sun, Travis Snider was sent to Triple A by the Blue Jays. Snider was hitting .242/.292/.394, with 25 strikeouts in 99 at bats.
  • According to Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker, Shingo Takatsu auditioned in front of the D'Backs and Giants. He threw as hard as 86 mph and impressed scouts with his breaking balls. If the name sounds familiar it's because the 40-year-old sidearmer used to close for the White Sox.
  • Steve Melewski of MASN wonders if Nolan Reimold has seen the last of the minor leagues. After a slow start, the left fielder is seven for his last 18, including a homer off Mariano Rviera.
  • Via Twitter, Keith Law suggests pitcher Sonny Gray would go in the top three picks of this year's draft if he were eligible.
  • Live to Play suggests the list of suitors for Miguel Angel Sano will soon "thin out to the very serious contenders" for the 16-year-old shortstop prospect.
  • Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star writes that the ideal trade for the Royals might be Mike Jacobs or Jose Guillen for a "capable shortstop."

Draft Update: Giants, Mariners, Braves, Nats

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 16, 2009 at 11:05am CDT

ESPN.com's Keith Law has an update on various teams and players as the June draft approaches. Here are some highlights; the original article has more detail.

  • The Giants are strongly considering taking a high school pitcher with their sixth overall pick.
  • Expect the Mariners to take Dustin Ackley, North Carolina's first baseman, with their first rounder.
  • Ackley's teammate, righty Alex White, pitched in front of four GMs Thursday: Brian Sabean (Giants), Neal Huntington (Pirates), Jack Zdurencik (Mariners) and Mike Rizzo (Nationals).
  • ESPN.com's Jason A. Churchill reports that White did not impress. Check out Churchill's article for more analysis of some top amateur players.
  • The Braves are expected to take Zack Wheeler, a local prep star.
  • The Nationals don't get a compensation pick if they fail to sign the player they draft with their tenth overall pick because that pick is itself compensation for failure to sign Aaron Crow last year. Nats GM Mike Rizzo says he's going to draft the best available player there, regardless of signability.
  • Some teams are losing interest in Kentucky lefty James Paxton, who chose Scott Boras as his advisor and pitched poorly afterwards.

By Tim Dierkes | April 14, 2009 at 10:30am CDT

  • Scott Boras spoke to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle about matching his client Dallas McPherson with the Giants.
  • Baseball America has the 2009 June draft order.
  • According to a Reuters article, one source suggested the sale of the Cubs to the Ricketts family may drag on past May.
  • Bart Given of Inside The Majors says the Indians are an exception in terms of providing nutritious meals to minor leaguers.
  • This week's chat will take place tomorrow at 2pm CST.
