I’m a diehard Jeter fan, but I wouldn’t give him $25 mil a year for four years. He’s not a homerun hitter and his defense is a little above average at best. Great team leader and batter for average. I’d give him between $15-$20 mil a year for 4 years. And that’s being generous.
If there was ever a salary cap in baseball, the core four of the yanks should play for league minimum. Obviously it would never happen, but if they really were committed to winning, they’d say to each other “We’ve already made our money, lets just make sure we win for the rest of our careers now.” The yanks would possibly have the same team, while multiple other teams would not.

I know he is the face of the franchise and Yankees are big on loyalty and everything, but 25m, really? He is an aging player who has posted negative UZR ratings every season except 2009.
UZR isn’t effective in most cases.
Please, enough with the stupid UZR ratings (no dis. to anyone). It is just another stupid stat that is over rated. GM’s have stated they don’t use this metric. The play Jeter made in Oakland a few years ago from Spencer’s throw – what was the UZR rating on that???? I watch him play several times a year. He is a true captain and field general no matter W.T.F. rating you throw out there. He is worth the 20 million they will give him. There are some things the “stats” just can’t show.
If you compare the market for Damon with that of Jeter next year, I don’t see a tremendous difference. Jeter is still above average defensively, and is clearly superior to Damon. Offensively they are similar, aging but tough outs. Outside of NY there is no market for Jeter; no team other than the Yankees would be willing to give him $10 million per year for even 2-3 years. It will be interesting to see what kind of a contract he ends up with. Obviously NY overpays for all of their players, skewing the market for everyone else.

Well, he clearly put some work into improving his range, as 2009 shows. Can we officially say he’s improved defensively if he posts another good metric in 2010?
Defensive stats? 2008 his UZR/150 was -0.7 and last year his UZR/150 was +8.4. From that, we can probably conclude Jeter that Jeter isn’t as bad as he was from 2005-2007, but not as good as 2009. Makes him look like an average defender, which with his bat is still a huge plus.

Certainly not in the same manner as there is in NY but Jeter is an international celebrity and owners/teams do reap a financial benefit with having a player with that status on their team. Jeter’s marketability to the other 29 improves because of that. That being said everyone knows the Steinbrenners will pay him handsomely and Jeter has no intentions of going anywhere else. 4YR/$100M is an absolute given.
4 yrs/100 is NOT an absolute given. 25 mil is too much, the Yankees know that. He could very well get 20 mil a year, but no where near Mauer/Pujols/A-Rod money.

Yes in speaking to Yorvit Torrealba the Mets indicated they “didn’t have any money to spend…on a career back up catcher when they already have 3 of those.”
There is absolutely no point in the Mets signing Torrealba, why Olney fails to see that is beyond me. Seriously Buster have you noticed the Mets plethora of back up catchers? If they need a catcher it would be one of the starting variety, which Torrealba is not.
Their excuse that they have no money to spend is just ridiculous and pathetic. There is no way a NY team has no more money to spend. Unless they mean “We don’t have any more money to spend without going into our profits.”

The Mets are in business to make a profit as is the other 29 teams. If you want a team that spends money become a yankee fan. All of these owners will stop spending when there payroll hits there budgeted level. At the end of a day it is still a money making business.
Be that as it may, it’s the “Mets indicated they had no money to spend” part that concerns me. This is the second time in two days there is an indication that the Mets are looking for some kind of discount due to a lack of money. And if you count the major discount the got in the GMJ trade, that makes three recently. But this is the same team that was trying to sign John Lackey, Bengie Molina, Joel Piñeiro and a number of others – and didn’t. Where is the money they were going to use to sign those players? It can’t have just dried up all of a sudden….can it?
As I suggested above, they probably decided “Since we cant get the players we want, we’ll just pocket the money we would have used and not spend anymore for now.”
If they’re in contention at the deadline, they need to make a deal. They’ve never done anything at the deadline in the past that was significant. The only one I can recall is when they got Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Perez in 2006. 2007 they just got Conine and in 2008 they only got Ayala; both were after the deadline. They cannot have this kind of offseason, be in contention, and once again do nothing at the deadline.
Yeah, no kidding. In fact, jury’s still out about whether they can even have this kind of offseason and contend at all!
I think they will be better than most people think. And half of the NL ends up competing for the Wild Card anyway.
Well, we can hope but I’m not holding my breath. Every year pretty much everyone predicts they will do a lot better than they end up doing, for one reason or another. I’m just going to watch and let this one play out.
They clearly had the money last month when they offered Bengie Molina ~5 million or so and they also reportedly offered Joel Pineiro a contract around the same time. Suggesting they had 10-12 million in offers out to players within this past month….and it’s not like they spent all that since then, they spent about 1.8 million on Tatis and GMJ.
My guess is this “Mets don’t have the money to spend” is just their way of saying “Thanks, but no thanks” to Rod Barajas and Yorvit Torrealba, players they probably just don’t like very much.

That’s absolutely correct…the Yankees will not let Jeter go, and I can’t see Jeter wanting to move on purely over money. I say 100% chance he is signed, and the figure of 4yrs/$60-70MM seems fair for a soon-to-be 36 y.o. shortstop.
Jeter is the face of the franchise, and whatever they choose to pay him will be fair because he puts rear ends in seats. The yankees have more class then any orginization out there, the yes network is a source of revenue for them and even with there monster payroll they are making money. Jeter came up as a yankee, and he will retire as one. He is the best shortstop they have ever had, and through the years there have been some good ones, and he is closing in on 3000 hits. A first ballot hall of famer.

His better years have gone by. 25 million per year or more will only be had by elite players in or nearing thier prime years. Jeter is an aging veteran whose production and defense in all probability will be on the decline. Can’t see the Yankee’s even coming close to that money or the 4 years.
Anyone that believes or buys into the Mets having no money is a fool. They just aren’t going to waste it on guys that at most barely improve a spot.

What is the media’s great obsession with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Joe Girardi’s contracts being up next season. If the Yankees want them back they’ll sign them back. Sherman is the classic case of these sportswriters having too much free time.

All I know is Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte all have 5 World Series rings with the opportunity to win more in the coming season.
That alone says everything about the value of these guys to the Yankees franchise over the years, that is why the Yankees always reward them come contract time.
Andy was the only guy who left after 2003 to go with Clemens to Houston, then came back and won a World Series, clinching all three playoff victories.
The Yankees can afford to and spend on their players that they want to keep.

I don’t consider the deals of Marquis, Pineiro, or Wolf to be bad deals. Yeah, they had solid seasons but these aren’t top of the line arms either. All three have a history that suits their payroll. In this economy nobody is going to shell out more dough than they have to for what are number 2 pitchers at best. Don’t know what Heyman is thinking on that one.
