Reds Still Waiting On Decision From Gomes

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 21, 2010 at 12:01pm CDT

SUNDAY, 12:01pm: We may have to wait another day or two for closure on the Reds and Gomes. Fay tweets that there is still no word on whether the outfielder will accept Cincinnati's offer. MLB.com's Mark Sheldon quotes Jocketty as saying, "We'll know something by tomorrow."

FRIDAY, 1:11pm: It looks like the holding pattern between the Reds and Jonny Gomes could come to an end this weekend. Reds GM Walt Jocketty tells John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer that he expects to know whether the outfielder will return by Sunday.

"He wants to come back," Jocketty said. "But he's taking a last look at what's out there."

The Reds have a minor league offer out to Gomes, who hit 20 homers for them last season. The Indians were connected to the 29-year-old earlier in the month, but there has been little reported interest in Gomes this winter.

Jonny is the Nick Swisher of the NL (in terms of his personality). I hope he re-joins the Reds. They really have a good shot to make the post-season.

Well without Volquez for half of the season. Their rotation is still filled without him so they have some nice depth.

I wouldn’t mind see the Reds make the playoffs. Not at the expense of the Cardinals of course. 🙂

Gomes should have a good shot at making the big club, what will hold him back is if he doesn’t hit well in spring training, and if some of the young left field candidates like Francisco, Heisy, Balentien, even Frazier and Alonzo hit so well the club has to keep them. And if they stay with the big club they’re not gonna sit on the bench, it will be Gomes, and Nix that are in jeopardy. I think Dickerson’s versatility will keep him on the big club.

Gomes could be a big help for the Reds as depth for Dickerson. Do you think that Dye will sign once this is official. Dye to TB perhaps?

I bet he signs. I think he will make the club, taking the roster spot of Volquez when they put him on the 60 day DL.
