Pirates Claim Hayden Penn

By Tim Dierkes | March 29, 2010 at 12:16pm CDT

The Pirates claimed pitcher Hayden Penn off waivers from the Marlins, tweets Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.  Penn is out of options, and the Marlins weren't able to get him through.

Penn, 25, posted a 4.11 ERA, 8.0 K/9, and 3.3 BB/9 in 70 Triple A innings last year.  The Marlins acquired him a year ago from the Orioles for Robert Andino.  Penn was a highly-regarded prospect four years ago, as Baseball America said he had "three plus pitches that he throws for strikes."  Nice pickup by Neal Huntington.

I am pretty pumped over this one. Hayden Panettiere is one of my favorites.

I would imagine Vinnie Chulk hits Indy then.

Or, he hits eight if he stays with the big club… 🙂

You know your career is in trouble when you start getting traded and released and then get picked up by the Pittsburghs, Washingtons, and Kansas Cities of the MLB universe.

Hmm, another failed prospect. Maybe he can be ok with some consistent work, or not.

its still a decent move on part of the pirates. when he was with the O’s, he has the stuff, he just has not been able to harness it and put together the whole package. (on a side note: he is injury prone so place him in a padded room).

Mmm, Neal does love his big pitchers that throw on a downward plane. Mmmm.

Please let this mean that Moss is not on the team anymore. My heart will be filled with joy if that is the case.

Moss left the dugout during the game today and headed back to the clubhouse. Have a feeling he’s going to be put on waivers today.

today is your lucky day then because Moss was desinated ofr assignment and is not expect to clear waivers, making him a free agent

Please! This move better pay off..! This team has looked very bad this spring and this move doesn’t look like it will correct those woes. Ross O. and Charlie M. have struggled to get hitters out this spring and Garrett Jones is inconsistent. Will you get some damn winners Neal?? If you expect Lastings Milledge to satisfy the offensive problems, you’re in a lot of trouble.
