Royals Pushing To Trade Jose Guillen

By Tim Dierkes | June 28, 2010 at 1:56pm CDT

The Royals are "really pushing to move Jose Guillen," tweets ESPN's Buster Olney, and "continue to tell teams they will eat a lot of dollars."  Guillen, the team's designated hitter, has $6.39MM remaining on his contract.

The 34-year-old Guillen sports a .282/.344/.470 line on the season, with strong April and June work sandwiching a rough May.  Aside from his time at DH, he's tallied 103 innings in right field.

Which contenders could use a potential offensive boost?  An American League club makes the most sense.  The White Sox and Rays don't have much at DH.  The Yankees are another consideration.  The Padres and Giants could be suitors, if they'd dare let Guillen play the outfield full-time again.

Not saying he will go to the Yankees, but they certainly could use a good bench hitter. I’m not a fan of their bench.

Of course he can play OF a game or 2 a week as well, give Swish Brett or Curtis rest

But I think the Yankees have too many players who have to be DH’s once in a while, like Posada, A-Rod, and Nick Johnson when he comes back. So Guillen as a DH wouldn’t fully work the whole year for the Yanks of course.

Yea but Nick Johnson sucks! And he can play LF and RF so that could give some of the OF a break

I hope we can find someone to take him off our hands. I really don’t care what we get for him. I just want to free up the spot for Kila to DH. Next up…..trading Pods to make room for Gordon.

Free room for Kila and replace Pods with Gordon, you might have an actual glimpse of the future of this team. Then there’s Jason Kendall…
Guillen could serve a team like the Yankees quite well. But what are the Royals going to get in return?

Why get rid of Pods he has been VERY good on this team! If Gordon’s mind was right for the Bigs he’d be back up here. Also Kendall should not be hitting 2 but is the best catcher we have had in years

      KILA IS NOT MESSIAH!!!!!

You guys drinking the Kool Aid that he is anything more than a AAAA player are seriously out of touch.

Not saying it’s wrong to trade Guillen…but you KC fans who say cr@p like “Callaspo should be our DH”, “Bring up KK!”, and “Let’s see what Moustakas can do now!!!” are nothing short of idiotic.

Nobody is calling Kila a messiah. I’m saying I’d rather see what he can do the last couple months of the season in the majors to figure it out once and for all. Agreed there are some idiotic royals fans, however, trading Guillen to give Kila a look is not a ridiculous idea. The fact that you even think such a thing makes me think you’d don’t have a clue as to what the team needs to do.

I have a clue Sir. I’ve been to over 50 games at the K over the last 2.5 seasons and about a dozen in Omaha where I watched KK in person. How many have you been to.

“The Rays designated Hank Blalock for assignment, according to the Tampa Tribune (via Twitter). Gabe Kapler returns from the disabled list tomorrow, so the Rays can afford to part with Blalock. They promoted him in mid-May, just as Pat Burrell’s disappointing stint in Tampa was coming to an end. But after tearing through Triple A pitching early on in the season, Blalock hit just one homer and posted a .254/.319/.349 line in the majors.”

Remember this and have the sack to post again when ‘KK’ gets his chance.

Yeah I was thinking that too. I mean don’t expect McDonald and Nada and Drew to be teh OF the rest of the year lol.

Somehow they lead the league in runs scored.

I think the only way the Giants can take on another OF is to cut ties with Bengie and put Buster behind the plate full time.

    Torres CF
    Sanchez 2B
    Sandoval 3B
    Huff 1B
    Uribe SS
    Guillen RF
    Burrell LF

The WSox could use a lefty, but at this point it seems that Dunn and Fielder will not be made available. At this point anything is an upgrade over Kotsay/Jones.

how would he cost more? how would dye ever ask a team to pay him 6+mill for half a season? and how do you know he is out of shape? do you hang out with him. If it were the start of the season then maybe he goes for more than 6 but its only a few weeks away from the half way point. there is no way he is signed for more than 4…i would guess 3 with a club option for a second year

I would like to add, something that should’ve at least been mentioned, in his 100 innings, he has proved he still has his rocket arm (youtube the video “The Throw” by Jose Gullien), and, as he stated prior to the season, he feels healthy, it’s shown by the bat, and somehow, it’s also shown by UZR outfield measures. He has a 16.8 UZR/150 in RF this year. Obviously, him keeping that up is almost impossible, but he’s done it before. Between 1700 innings in RF in 2005 and 2006 with Washington, he logged a 12.9 and 3.5 UZR/150, respectively.

If the Royals are willing to eat 4-5M of the whatever remaining, he could fit into as a power bench and sub player for a competitive club. New York, Boston, and Philadelphia.

I think he would be a good pick up for the Padres. They had Blanks in left to start the season, so playing left in Petco can’t be that challenging. When the Padres picked up Bradley a few years back look how well he played for them, until Bud Black took him out.:) If the Royals are willing to give him away, the Padres should give them a call.

Yes I have seen Blanks play the outfield and I’m sure Guillen could do just as well if not better. Unless Guillen’s right arm fell off recently, he also has a cannon if I remember correctly.

Rays make a lot of sense. They are in need of a RH hitting DH with some pop. They only have Longoria as a HR threat in their line-up. A low level prospect and the Royals take on most of his remaining should do it.

Why would you want Kila to DH instead of Billy Ray Double-Play Butler? BRDPB should never hit as high as 4th. Ever, ever, ever… unless Betancrap gets traded and plays SS against the Royals.
