Giants Inquired On David Aardsma

By Tim Dierkes | July 28, 2010 at 6:10pm CDT

The Giants inquired on Mariners closer David Aardsma, MLBTR has learned.  However, the Mariners countered by offering Aardsma and Jose Lopez for Pablo Sandoval and were turned down.

Aardsma was a first-round pick of Brian Sabean's Giants back in '03 but was traded to the Cubs with Jerome Williams two years later for LaTroy Hawkins and cash.  His peripheral stats haven't changed much since last year, and his groundball rate is actually up, but his ERA increased from 2.52 to 4.73.  One plus is that he's under team control through 2012.  Lopez, a potential non-tender candidate for the Mariners after the season, doesn't seem to hold much trade value despite last year's 25 home run campaign.

Sandoval has seen a big downturn this year, with a .263/.325/.384 line after last year's amazing performance garnered MVP votes.  His injuries have seemingly been minor, though he is just returning from personal leave.  Sandoval remains under team control through 2014 and the Giants probably aren't inclined to sell low.

I wouldn’t be suprised if Sabean still gets D.A. and Lopez but will get ripped off in the process.

The offer was just a test to see how willing (or stupid) Sabean is to make a trade. It makes sense to offer for Pablo because the Giants are talking about getting Cantu. Shows they have some smarts in them.

He’s just trying to buy low on Sandoval who’s had a crap year. As horrible as Lopez has been, Sandoval hasn’t been much better. Plus Lopez has been great at 3B defensively according to UZR.

I know it’s still a wishful counter but it isn’t has “crazy” as people are making it out to be. When Lopez leaves Seattle, he will be a perennial 25-30 HR bat. Watch. And Aardsma just came off a fantastic season in 2009.

    Just sayin..

Agree, Safeco is a terrible fit for Lopez, but in other stadium and other organization, he could be a great defender at 3b and a 270 avg + 25 or 30 HR + Aardsma who could be a great setup man for SF

As a Giants fan this trade isn’t that far off…Lopez has about the same power range as Sandoval..both hit 25 homeruns last year and Lopez had back to back 40 double seasons to go along with it….plus they are offering Aardsma when the Giants need a pitcher..if Aardsma was dealing this deal gets closer but the ceiling for Pablo is huge after last year and until he fails for a couple years in a row then that ceiling at 23 years old is too huge to trade for anything but a big impact player..

Agreed that Jack Z is testing Sabean, plus he’s also checking to see if there is anything to the rumors in some quarters that the Giants would entertain a Sandoval trade if the right names came up.

    These aren’t those names.

Jack Z hustled so many people in his short time as GM of the M’s and was just trying to put another notch on his belt…he probably has a personal vendetta for getting shorted on the Morrow for League trade…only blip i can think of, but getting Smoak for 2 months of Lee? awesome, he was just trying to use his Jack Z charm and see what he could get away with…awesome read. how can you not like this guy?

Jack Z made him that counter offer because we cannot afford to lose Aardsma! Who do we have to replace him League? Then what?…. Who will replace League? Hmm? Use your brains… We dont have anyone in the minors that is ready! Either you are plain stupid or dont get why Jack Z countered with that offer. If we deal Aardsma the M’s dont have a back up closer for him! Man some of you guys on here are complete tards. J Z made that offer on purpose! If we are going to deal our only qualified closer (who is SUCKING RIGHT NOW) what do you expect us to do? Ask the Giants for a couple of C prospects? Are they Major League ready? That is all J Z is looking for. So please, dont act like we just made a counter offer because we were trying to make you laugh. There is a perfectly good reason behind it…. Just too many of you think your playing MLB2K10….

Haha. funny. Obviously this isn’t enough to make the deal but throw in a minor leaguer or two, say Alex Liddi and one of Beavan/Kenn Kasparek then I think the trade would be a lot more even.

ok, so that trade is ridiculous on the surface, but lets look deeper in- Sandoval is scuffling, but talented, as we saw last year. Aardsma is talented, but scuffling, as we saw last year. (Now I’ll readily agree that the two players value independent of team are nowhere near each other, obviously.) Lopez will likely become a top-tier 2b (offensively) or a league average bat at 3b with plus defense, as we’ve seen this year according to his UZR. Safeco is terrible for his bat, and while he could certainly do better if he did not pull absolutely EVERYTHING, I’m guessing that, in the great tradition of Mariner’s ex-players, he will awaken offensively (a la Beltre this year) once he has a new address. It’s not a ridiculous trade, just lopsided, weighted in our favor. And FWIW, Smoak and Panda oscillating between 1b and DH…..::drool::

Also, there are a plethora of arms that we could use to replace Aardsma, starting with League. May I remind you that the M’s ARE NOT WINNING ANY GAMES, therefore have none to SAVE. It doesn’t matter who we throw out there in the 9th…

Jack’s got a plan, and its happening right before your eyes….think long term, not for today, people.

I grew up a Giants fan in the bay area and live in Seattle now, so am an M’s fan too.

This is a rediculous trade offer by Jack. Panda should be one of the Giants untouchables given his talent, potential and marketability. I can’t think of anyone on the M’s roster that Sabean would even consider trading him for. I am very sorry to say this, but this is a TERRIBLE team right now except for Felix and Ichiro, and the M’s won’t trade either one.

The market has not been set for Closers, if they are going to inquire about a player we will shoot high. Its smart, cause then you get what you want. It would be nice to get Panda, but I dont think that was the intention of making that counter offer. Its how Trade Negotiations work…. Come on… Also, we have players to trade, just not any with our Big League squad. Most of our Prospects in Triple A are almost untouchable. I dont see that happening. Jack Z is going to try to get a Major League ready player that can help this horrible Mariners team! So guess what, you want a closer and the market has yet to be set? Guess, what we will ask for the world. We wont get it, but it is smart tactic for negotiations.
