Dodgers “Not Inclined” To Make Trades

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 27, 2010 at 3:29pm CDT

Dodgers GM Ned Colletti told Bob Nightengale of USA Today that he is "not inclined to move anyone so long as [the Dodgers] have a chance" (Twitter link). The Dodgers, who trail the Giants by 5.0 games in the Wild Card race, have until Tuesday to decide whether to trade Manny Ramirez to the White Sox, hand the slugger over, or hold on.

The Dodgers have six games remaining against the Giants, six against the Padres and nine against the Rockies, so they could re-insert themselves into the playoff picture. At this point, it's undeniably in Colletti's best interest to say that he has no intention of trading Ramirez. Admitting the intent to part with the 38-year-old would give the White Sox leverage.

No Miricle Dodgers of 2010 for you eh? I think the Rocks have their big gun on the mound tonight, so it’s going to be a rough ride for the Azul.

The Dodgers have their young gun on the mound tonight. It’s not going to be an ease night for the Rockies offense either.

I think most of us suspected this. If the Dodgers are able to sweep Colorado, or even take 2 then we’ll probably see no action. Especially if the Giants and Phillies slide a bit. The Dodgers play both of them coming up too. It’s roll the dice time in Dodger town…

That or the Dodgers wanna play a game of sharades with Kenny Williams until they get something good in return. Frankly, I don’t understand why Ned Colleti thinks LA is still in it

I guess it is only because they have a 3 more days to make a final decision. Other than that, Ned would be pulling the plug with the shadow from the glimmer of hope they have. Ned probably is thinking this is a pipe dream at this point, but it aint over til it’s over.

With Lilly on the staff, the Dodgers starting pitching is better than the Giants.

Head to head matchups based on ERA… (w/ WHIP)

Kershaw 3.07/1.25 vs. Cain 3.07/1.14 = very slight advantage Giants, though head to head the Dodgers absolutely own Cain.

Lilly 3.27/1.04 vs. Sanchez 3.67/1.30 = advantage Dodgers.

Kuroda 3.56/1.22 vs. Lincecum 3.72/1.35 = advantage Dodgers.

Billingsley 3.70/1.32 vs. Zito 3.78/1.30 = break even.

Padilla 3.96/1.07 vs. Bumgarner 3.95/1.40 = slight advantage Dodgers.

I also think AT&T favors pitchers more than Dodger Stadium. And the Dodgers had a tougher schedule this season.

As far as bullpens, well… with the additions of Jansen and Dotel, the return of Belisario, and the improvement of Sherrill, added to Kuo and Broxton… I think the Dodgers have the better bullpen.

Don’t forget the Cards. It’s asking quite a bit to think that 4 teams will falter.

Very true. The Dodgers lost the last time they played all of these teams, as you so expressed when the Giants swept em the last time around… It’s a small chance indeed. The fork is starting to penetrate the flesh.

Manny’s finished! He was a slug these last 3 games against the Brewers. He doesn’t have his legs under him. He’s been working out for 3 weeks and he still doesn’t have it. Play Podsednik in left. He can actually field. What the Dodgers need is for Kemp to get his head out of his rear and start murdering the ball like he’s capable of. Forget Manny. He belongs in the A.L.

did u actually say scott podsednik can field????? yea hes fast, but unless hes done a complete 180 since chicago last year, he cant field. man takes some of the worst routes to balls ive ever seen and has no instincts whatsoever, if you think scotty pods is a good outfiedler ive got some swampland to sell you in florida

Doesn’t seem to me like the Dodgers have a ton of leverage. If they make a run and cut that wildcard lead down obviously they would be inclined to keep him. Otherwise why hold on to a player when you can cut $4 million of salary with a month left in the season, espeically when that players 38 and has missed a HUGE chunk of the season.

Ultimately,Kenny is on the hook for the 4 million at this point. …thats it. He ceratinly doesnt have to give up any players.

Im not sure what will happen if Manny plays and gets hurt. I assume that the waiver claim is null and void. So LA needs to think long and hard if all they are doing is trying to drive up the price.

It’s not just the five game lead that the Dodgers have to over come, but the fact that they’ll have to pass the Rockies, Cards, Giants, and Phillies to claim the wild card, and I don’t think that’s doable with the team that they have, with or without Manny being Manny.

Ned will no doubt try to get back a prospect or two in this trade, AND get Chicago to eat some of Manny’s contract. If they won’t do that, they’ll probably just cut him loose.

    per Cot’s: for 2009, Ramirez receives $10M in 2009 and $15M in 3 installments of $5M paid each June 30, 2010 to 2012
    – he receives $5M in 2010 and $15M in 3 installments of $3,333,333 each on June 30, 2011 and 2012, and $8,333,333 on June 30, 2013

Here is a newsflash for Ned Coletti – your season is over whether you care to acknowledge it or not. Five games back and trailing four teams in the Wild Card with 30-some games to go means picking up a game a week on FOUR teams down the stretch. That means all four teams have to lose when you win, and you can’t afford to lose in the meantime.

It’s time for the Dodgers to start planning for 2011.

I don’t think GM’s would be doing their jobs properly if they were that pessimistic about things. Of course Colletti will be clinging onto the hope of the Wild Card.

The Dodgers have a low probability of making the playoffs, but the 5 games is a much bigger deal than 4 teams when you look at schedules. As of the 8/31 decision deadline, they will have already played 4 games against teams they are trailing. StL is the only team the won’t face again in front of them (but COL ends the season with ’em). Folks need to look at the whole landscape here, not just isolated scenarios.

Come Tuesday if LA is within 4, they should prolly keep him. If not, ship out Manny as well as Kuroda, Lily, Dotel, etc.

Lets Go Blue..yeah we all hope for the other 4 teams to take a bad fall and us to rise..hey its the comeback kids after all..well at least most of them. I say we will all know by the end of this weekend if Dodgers have a chance or if not to at least give the Giants a hard time and make them nervous..if we cant go..they dont either. With or without Manny we can do this.

Dodgers need to trade Ramirez for whatever they can. If they make the playoffs it will not be because of ramirez. Just play Posednik and hope there other guys start hitting better.

Pierre is horrible and I am not saying Posednik is good, what I am saying is they probably are not going to make the playoffs anyways and if they do it is not because of Manny, it will be because guys like Either, Kemp and Loney hit better. Mannys power has not been the same since he stopped taking roids. If it were up to me I would trade him and Kuroda and Lilly and focus next year.

oh thank goodness! I agree. We have significantly better chances at 2011 than we do at 2010. I’d certainly try to save some coin for 2011 while sacrificing the 3% of 2010 that we have.
