Sabean On Huff, Burrell, Uribe

By Tim Dierkes | November 23, 2010 at 1:32pm CDT

Giants GM Brian Sabean spoke to reporters today on the Aubrey Huff conference call, and Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News has all the details.

  • Sabean said he got clearance to match an offer Huff received from another team in making a two-year, $22MM proposal.  You might think the Giants overpaid to retain Huff, but at least one other club was willing to offer him big money too.
  • Pat Burrell has been informed by Sabean that the club will take care of other business before revisiting his situation.
  • Talks with Juan Uribe are active but on a slower track.  Sabean feels Uribe will have multiple offers as a shortstop or third baseman in the weak infield market.  I expect Uribe to be offered arbitration today.
  • The Giants had talks with a free agent shortstop from another club today, says Sabean.  I suppose that could mean Orlando Cabrera or Cesar Izturis; there's not much out there.  Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweets that the Giants are not expected to bid on Tsuyoshi Nishioka before today's 4pm central deadline.
  • Sabean says he might have to move money around and may not be able to tender contracts to all eight of his arbitration eligible players.  The Giants have Andres Torres, Javier Lopez, Jonathan Sanchez, Ramon Ramirez, Mike Fontenot, Santiago Casilla, Cody Ross, and Chris Ray up for arbitration.  The non-tender deadline is December 2nd.

Tender contracts to Torres, Lopez, Sanchez, Casilla and Ross.

Let Ramirez, Fontenot and Ray walk.

I wonder would the Rays be interested in Ramirez or Ray in a Jason Bartlett trade?

I don’t know, I realize Ramirez had a rough go of it before the trade, but after the Giants acquired him, he was fantastic. If he’s only going to cost $1.3-1.5M, why wouldn’t they hang onto him?

Now it’s about saving money for Cody Ross. Ramirez is expendable.

I’ve always wondered if Uribe really is “31” years old. More like 34-35, I’d guess.

I’d non-tender Fontenot and Ray, maybe Ramirez.

I think that Fontenot, Ray and Ramirez get non-tender.
Maybe they can trade Castilla for Bartlett. Giants have a few good young arms ready for the bullpen.

Font and Ray yes, I’m not sure about non-tendering Ramirez. I won’t complain either way, but I can see reasons to keep him around one more year. Casilla for Bartlett seems like a pretty even deal. Giants have multiple internal options to replace his slot in the bullpen

The Giants are talking to Uribe about resigning, but realize that they might have to pursue other options. Here is a suggestion:Zduriencik should contact Sabean about shipping Jack Wilson and his 5M to the Giants to reunite him with 2B Freddy Sanchez.

Would a return of left-handed reliever Dan Runzler be asking too much? The deal would be SS Jack Wilson for the 25 year old lefty RP Runzler.

Not if you’re willing to pay 85% of Jack Wilson’s salary, or take back Aaron Rowand or Zito.

Well, that’s my opinion on how Sabean should negotiate said deal. I would rather see Ryan Rohlinger, Brandon Crawford, or Manny Burris out at SS for 400k than Wilson at 5m.

Credit Texas for shutting him down. Must have pulled the Rays videos out of the closet.

Brandon Belt could take the place of 1b Travis Ishikawa and OF Nate Schierholtz, thus freeing up two salaries to keep the likes of Burrell, Fontenot, or try and bring back Renteria in whatever role suits the Giants’ purposes

If Sabean dumps either Ishikawa or Schierholtz to bring back Burrell, Fontenot, or Renteria, he should be fired. Good teams don’t throw away pre-arb players like Ishikawa/Schierholtz so they sign Mike Fonenot.

We NEED fontenot for his durability plus he gives us a runner late in games AND he was somewhat clutch when we needed him to be. Chris Ray’s stint as a Giant is over along with Ramon Ramirez who would want too much $$, remember we need to pay raise Timmy, Cainer, B Dubz. Give the ramirez $$ to a worthy guy like Torres or Ross. Casilla is going to end up being a guy you needed to do well and did and then let you down the next year because he could potentially lose velocity during the offseason. Lets prey we could dish him in a Bartlett Trade and also keep parts of the pen

Fontenot was clutch? Was it his throwing errors to 1st or his lack of knowledge of who gets pop flies to the pitchers mound that make him clutch?

DeRosa can play every where that Fontenot can. So Fontenot makes no sense at all. Him, Ray, and maybe Ramirez will not be back. The others should be.

Ross is a priority if you ask me, he can field, hit, hit for power, run (decently). Same deal with Andres Torres. Lopez is another no-doubter. Out of the rest of the players who are arbitration eligible I’d say go for it with Casilla and Sanchez.

PS – I think Bartlett or Cabrera would be a decent move for the Giants. Cabrera has more power, but Bartlett has better speed and defense (I think).

Bottom line, Im stoked to have Aubrey back. I really want to know how they are going to sub the 24 HRs and 80+ RBIs Uribe gives you in the lineup. BTW – I really would hate to hear another fanbase shout “UUUU-RIBE!”; don’t steal that from us like you stole “Beat LA!”

Looking at their numbers Cabrera seems to be the better defender but Bartlett is a little younger and faster and is not too far removed from a 5 WAR season so there maybe more upside to Bartlett if the Giants dont have to dish out anything more then Casilla. Either way I think considering that both Cabrera and Bartlett aren’t that much more of an upgrade over Burriss/Crawford (solely based on their 2010 numbers) who would at least provide some great defense up the middle.

Ray is as good as gone. Fontenot cant play SS, and looked bad at 3B when given time there, I doubt he is tendered. Ramon Ramirez has a chance to be brough back, and his stats with BOS weren’t amazing so he might not get more than $2-3 MM in arb, which wouldnt be a terrible deal.
Lopez is coming back, I could see the Giants trying to lock him up for multiple seasons after the way he mowed through the power leftys he faced in the postseason.

I wouldnt be surprised to see the Giants trade Affeldt and replace him with Runzler rather than giving Runzler a chance to start.
