White Sox Re-Sign Omar Vizquel

By Tim Dierkes | November 2, 2010 at 1:43pm CDT

The White Sox re-signed infielder Omar Vizquel to a one-year deal, according to the team's Twitter feed.  The deal is worth $1.75MM, tweets MLB.com's Scott Merkin.

Vizquel, 44 in April, hit .276/.341/.331 in 391 plate appearances for the White Sox this year while earning $1.375MM.  The 14-time Gold Glove winner logged innings at second base, shortstop, and third base.

Vizquel is a great option for back-up infield. His defensive number at SS in 2010 were minimal, but impressive!

I think he acts as an unofficial coach, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him become an official coach once he retires. But he did a great job for the White Sox this year. He played regularly at 3B for a good portion of the season (which I’m sure he won’t be expected to do again) and played very well. His defense was typically solid, and his .341 OBP was a pleasant surprise.

yes, but at 44 there is not gradual decline. one day he will wake up and not be able to hit the mendoza line.

When that day comes he’ll become a coach.

But if he’s still playing above average defense, who cares? I mean….he’s still at 44 one of the 10-15 best defensive SS’s in baseball. Can play 2B and 3B (though a bit below average). He can still steal you a base too.

He’s got value as a bench guy even if he’s only hitting around .200 (though needs a decent OBP to go with that, which he had this year).

The only coach who can go out and show you how to do it.

I like this move, the team broke out of it’s early season slump when vizquel solidified the number 2 spot in the lineup and the combination of him and Cora helped Alexei progress with his defense. He will make a good utility player

Omar is outstanding. 44 and still wants to play? Dedication! He is a Dinosaur but a contributor. 2.76 batting avg is really good considering how many at bats he had.

The guy’s just incredible. It’s been a pleasure to see an old school HOF perform his magic.

Seems like a great guy to have around the Sox. They just can’t get in the situation of having to play again as much as they did in ’10. Very loyal organization….though, I have to wonder if we’ve seen the last Bobby Jenks in a Sox uniform.

I think his getting non-tendered is a given. There’s always the chance that he could resign, but there seems to be some bitterness between Jenks and the organization with the issue of his conditioning. I know a lot of Sox fans are eager to see him gone, but I actually think he was OK in 2010. Not great, but also a bit unlucky.

Another issue is with his role on the team. He and the team might not see eye to eye as far as whether he should remain the closer. Probably time to move on as a closer with a lesser organization or a set up roll

This is great, Omar has always been and always will be my favorite SS, in many ways he woke this team up and saved it from mediocrity when Teahen got hurt. Under his tutelage Alexei has really became a defensive force and his offense came back too. This move was a no-brainer, good job Kenny, keep it up. Bring back Paulie or try to get LaRoche now that he is free, get rid of Jenks (duh), and it would be sweet if ya found a way to trade Linebrink too, but that is a bit improbable. I’m willing to give Teahen another chance, though it pains me, lastly though we need a good catcher…bring in Yorvit Torealba maybe. Oh and bring back Putz, that would be nice.
