Rays Sign Joe Inglett

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 18, 2011 at 12:28pm CDT

The Rays signed Joe Inglett to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training, the team announced. The 32-year-old, who was non-tendered by Milwaukee in December, will provide the Rays with depth on the infield and in the outfield.

Inglett appeared in 102 games for the Brewers last year, hitting .254/.331/.401 and playing second base, left field and right field. He has also played shortstop, third base and center field over the course of his five-year MLB career. The left-handed hitter has a .286/.345/.397 line in the majors, so he's a potential source of OBP off of manager Joe Maddon's bench.

Elliot Johnson, Felipe Lopez and Casey Kotchman will also be battling for spots on the Rays' bench. Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times first reported the Inglett signing.

Finally! I was getting tired of all the “Where will Joe Inglett sign?” talk.

Aw, just joking. He’s a good bench guy, you’re right. Six different positions in the majors is pretty impressive. It’s actually seven positions if you count the 1-2-3 inning he pitched last season.

Kind of surprised it took Inglett so long to get so much as a minor league deal. He’s a solid bat off the bench. Still I think he’s more useful in the NL where benches get more use.

Had him on my high school baseball team – he was brutal on the competition. Played 6 positions and pitched. You know what…he still does all that…at the big league level. Joey even through a 1-2-3 inning last year. So take it easy. Fantasy Baseball is like techno. And nobody listens to techno…

Good signing, solid player. He played well in 2008 when he was given regular playing time for The Blue Jays.

I agree. It’s about time. I would have preferred that the Jays had signed Inglett rather than Posednik. Good luck Joe!

Madden loves super utility guys. He has Zobrist, Elliot Johnson, now Inglett, and others. I’ve never seen Inglett play, but from what I’ve read, he seems to be a very solid bench player. The Rays amaze me at how they can sign so many people in the off season with so little money. They rebuilt a bullpen, made several minor league deals, and even made Manny sign for only 2 million! I can’t wait for this season! It’s going to be interesting, I can tell you that! GO RAYS!!

They rebuilt their bullpen? That bullpen smells like 2007 to me. I hope they succeed but relying on Farnsworth or Maddon’s laptop to close scares me.
