Quick Hits: McClellan, Berkman, Reyes

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 5, 2011 at 2:20pm CDT

Dan Meyer, Matt Anderson, Luis Castillo and Robb Quinlan probably didn't like it very much when the Phillies released them this spring, but they may not have realized that they have something in common with their former GM. The Blue Jays released Ruben Amaro Jr. on this date in 1996, before he ever played a Major League game for them…

  • Kyle McClellan has become a valuable cog in the Cardinals’ rotation, as Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch explains.
  • McClellan's teammate, Lance Berkman, told ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick that he was disappointed with the way his tenure with the Astros ended. “They basically said, 'You're bad. We're bad. Let's cut ties and get on down the road.' And that was hurtful.”
  • International scouts tell Melissa Segura of SI.com that this year's Dominican July 2 class of amateur free agents is the best they've seen in years (Twitter link).
  • Anthony DiComo of MLB.com presents ten possible destinations for trade candidate Jose Reyes, some (Milwaukee) more plausible than others (the Bronx).
  • Former Reds and Nationals GM Jim Bowden also weighs in on the market for Reyes. He has the Giants, Cardinals, Red Sox, Reds and Angels as possible suitors on his list at ESPN.com.

I just don’t see the Sox as a serious suitor for Reyes. First of all Lowrie is making an acceptable replacement for Scutaro. Second, despite Iglesias’s slow start he’s still pretty much the shortstop of the future for the Sox, trading for Reyes really only makes sense if he’s being acquired with the intent to sign him long term. Third, the Sox farm is depleted after the Gonzalez trade so a Reyes trade would probably require (when he can be traded) Ranaudo.

Completely agree! I would say the sox are 4X more likely to trade for a Matt Holliday type than they would reyes! (not that it will happen) At least then they could address a possible need. I for one am very pleased with Lowrie.

I don’t see why the Sox should trade for Reyes at all. Granted, he is better than Lowrie at this point, but Lowrie is a player that will only get better in the future. If the Sox are really interested, they should try and aquire him as FA in the off season, and not have to give up as much.

I’ve had the pleasure to watch Jeter and Reyes throughout their careers, and have seen enough of Lowrie to predict he’ll be able to play at their level. Lowrie’s issues have been not being able to avoid illness and injuries. While his lifetime stats are really not enough to go on,keep him healthy and watch him blossom into a star soon enough. I’d put him in Pinstipes if I could, were Jeter not on the team.

Nice to see the Astros handled the Berkamn deal that way…

If Shelby Miller or Carlos Martinez are required to get a deal done with the Mets, Reyes will not be in a Cardinal uniform this year. However, I’d be willing to sacrifice one of them if it meant we were getting David Wright. 😀

So we don’t want to give up a top prospect for someone that fills a position of severe need, but are more than willing to at the only position of strength for the Cardinals in the minors. No thanks on Wright. Yes, he is a great player, but that would be a waste of alot of money by the Cardinals when there are much bigger needs to fill.

Since when is third base a “position of strength” for the Cardinals in the minors? Matt Carpenter is a good OBP guy, but he’s kind of old to be playing triple A. Not only that, but his talent suggests that he should be playing second base. Same deal with Zach Cox. David Freese never seems to be healthy, God bless him. I’m also trying to think long term. Reyes is a free agent at the end of the season and he’s prob going to command at least a 15MM/yr contract in the offseason. The Cardinals will not be able to re-sign him at that price and Reyes doesn’t strike me as a guy willing to take less money to stay in St. Louis. So why trade top prospects for a guy who’s only gonna be on the team for a few months?

berkman was hurt by the astros, so he signs with the cards and injects his way back to stardom! I can’t believe the mlb hasn’t caught more players on that team than ankiel. What a joke.

Crazy how no one ever leaves the Cardinals late in their career and finds success elsewhere isn’t it? Jim Edmonds, Scott Rolen, Troy Glaus…….

You’re joking right? Rolen hasn’t experienced success since he left St. Louis? Start watching baseball, please.

It was sarcasm….All three of those guys had ALOT more success after they left St. Louis than their last few years in St. Louis.

Reyes thus far has a very close stat profile and career arc and age/season mix as Juan Samuel. Scary similar…Samuel was a terror on the bases, hit for a lot of xbh from the SS position and was seen as a guy who was a top 2 SS in MLB The Phillies dumped Samuel during his age 28 season and he started having leg issues and his career pancaked….he hung around another 10 years but there is a clear line where he went from all star to spare part….and it’s the same age/situation Reyes is in now. Not saying it will happen and Reyes is a bit better, but guys who rely on their legs run the danger of having more issues and decline quickly…..something to think about when investing $15m yr for 4-5 years….
