Rays Sign Taylor Guerrieri

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 15, 2011 at 11:02pm CDT

The Rays selected the right-hander 24th overall in June. Guerrieri had a scholarship offer at South Carolina, but decided instead to sign with the Rays, who had ten of the top 60 picks in the draft.

Diamondbacks Sign Archie Bradley

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 15, 2011 at 11:00pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have signed seventh overall pick Archie Bradley for $5MM, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America (on Twitter). BBI Sports Group represents the high schooler. The sides may have agreed to a two-sport deal.

Though he's a football standout, Bradley prefers the baseball diamond to the football field and said after being selected that "the frontrunner has always been baseball." Bradley is friends and workout partners with Dylan Bundy, the Orioles' top pick in the 2011 draft.

With today's deal, the Diamondbacks have officially signed both of their top picks, Bradley and Trevor Bauer, who has a 1.93 ERA with 16.1 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in his first 14 innings as a pro.

Twins Notes: Thome, Kubel, Young

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 15, 2011 at 9:54pm CDT

MLBTR congratulates Jim Thome, who hit career home runs number 599 and 600 in Detroit tonight. Here are some links on Thome’s big night…

  • Tim Kurkjian of ESPN the Magazine looks back on Thome's run to 600 home runs.
  • The Twins are not averse to a shakeup, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter). Jason Kubel isn't on waivers yet, though other teams covet him.
  • Dave Cameron of FanGraphs says former Twins outfielder Delmon Young, the Tigers' most recent acquisition, is probably better than Magglio Ordonez even if he doesn't live up to his potential as a former top draft pick. Young homered in his first at bat for the Tigers today.

NL Central Notes: Zambrano, Cubs, Astros

By Mike Axisa | August 15, 2011 at 8:13pm CDT

On draft signing deadline night, let's catch up on the NL Central…

  • Carlos Zambrano apologized to his teammates and Cubs fans for his latest tirade and, according to the Chicago Tribune, he wants to remain "a Cubbie for the rest of [his] life."
  • SI.com's Jon Heyman says (on Twitter) that Zambrano's grievance against the Cubs is expected to be heard soon, with his side arguing for a shorter penalty since he had been ejected from Friday's game before leaving the stadium.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports recalls some of the Cubs notable big money busts, including the disgruntled Zambrano and Milton Bradley.
  • In a separate article, Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports examine what's holding up the sale of the Astros.

Rockies Designate Gonzalez, Sign Romero

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 15, 2011 at 5:44pm CDT

The Rockies announced (on Twitter) that they have designated right-hander Edgar Gonzalez for assignment to create roster space for left-hander J.C. Romero, who will be available for tonight's game. The Rockies had been nearing a deal for Romero and have now completed one.

It's been a busy year for Romero, who started the season in Philadelphia. He posted a 3.86 ERA with more walks than strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings and the Phillies released him in June. He signed with the Nationals within a week but Washington released him before long and the Yankees picked him up, only to release him last week.

Gonzalez appeared in one game for Colorado, allowing five hits and a walk in two innings of work yesterday. The 28-year-old has spend most of the season as a starter at Triple-A and has a 4.70 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 115 innings for the Rays' and Rockies' top affiliates this year.

Athletics Place Harden, Crisp, Breslow On Waivers

By Tim Dierkes | August 15, 2011 at 2:08pm CDT

A trio of Athletics were placed on waivers recently, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports: starter Rich Harden, center fielder Coco Crisp, and lefty reliever Craig Breslow.  Placing the three on waivers does not necessarily mean the A's want to trade them.  But if they were placed this afternoon then the clock is now ticking to make a claim, with the window closing after 48 hours.

The Red Sox pulled out of a trade deadline deal for Harden over physical concerns, but the 29-year-old righty continues to take his turn in the rotation for the A's.  His big-time strikeout rate is back in an eight start sample, though Harden remains prone to free passes and home runs.  Owed just $360K plus performance bonuses, claiming Harden would not be terribly risky despite his extensive injury history.

Crisp, 31, is hitting .274/.329/.392 in 441 plate appearances this season, already his highest total since '07.  He leads the American League with 37 steals and his defense is typically well-regarded.  He has a shot at Type B status, so the A's probably won't let him go for nothing.  Crisp has about $1.39MM remaining on his contract.

Breslow is under team control through 2013, assuming he's tendered contracts for the next two seasons.  The brainy 31-year-old has been hittable this year, especially against left-handed hitters.
