Players Claimed And Pulled Back

By Tim Dierkes | August 31, 2011 at 2:06pm CDT

A player who is claimed on waivers can be pulled back by his original team, and it happens regularly.  It could be that the two sides just couldn't reach a deal, or it might be that the original team never intended to trade the player.  Technically a player can be placed on waivers a second time, but it's rare because in that case he cannot be pulled back.  Reportedly, at least 16 players have been claimed and pulled back this month:

  • Ryan Dempster
  • Kyle Farnsworth
  • Joel Peralta
  • Edwin Jackson
  • B.J. Upton
  • Heath Bell – claimed by Giants
  • Tim Byrdak
  • Chris Carpenter
  • Coco Crisp
  • Scott Hairston
  • Rich Harden – claimed by Indians
  • Ramon Hernandez
  • Jason Isringhausen
  • Jason Kubel – claimed by Indians
  • Carlos Pena – claimed by Yankees
  • Wandy Rodriguez – claimed by Rockies

Many players were placed on waivers and were not traded, including John Danks, Gavin Floyd, Paul Konerko, Matt Thornton, Brett Myers, Clint Barmes, and Craig Breslow.  It's safe to assume several of these players were claimed and then pulled back.  Additionally, at least 23 players have cleared waivers and can be traded to any team.

Tim didn’t the Mets have 3 players claimed and pulled back? Izzy, Harriston and Byrdak.

Anthopoulos said recently in the Hill/Mcdonald press conference that it’s team policy to put everybody through waivers, so I bet you can add about 10 Jays to this list.

Really would’ve loved Crisp as a fourth outfielder, but I can’t say as I blame them for pulling him back. From a Sox perspective, giving up too much for a guy who’d be your fourth outfielder isn’t reasonable, but Crisp has starter credentials and should cost as much as a starter.

I also would love to have him back. remember..Reason he wanted to go in the 1st place was to get a starting job.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Epstein could talk him into a 2 year deal or so and pay him what he is worth? Like 2/10m? For all the crap they have had as 4th OF, to have stability like Crisp would be an element they have not had since he left.

The indians put the claim on Harden and was pulled back because they did not want to trade for him just block the tigers from getting him.
