Heyman On Rangers, Phillies, Draft

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 23, 2011 at 6:05pm CDT

The latest from Jon Heyman of SI.com (all links go to Twitter):

  • Other than the Indians, the Rangers were the only team that told Grady Sizemore he’d play center field, according to Heyman. The outfielder re-signed in Cleveland today for a base salary of $5MM with up to $4MM in incentives.
  • The Phillies were a “strong option” for Sizemore, but they wanted him in left field, Heyman reports.
  • Heyman has future slot recommendations for amateur draft picks. MLB recommends a bonus of $7.2MM for the first overall pick and the recommendations decrease to $6.2MM, $5.2MM, $4.2MM, $3.5MM and $3.2MM for picks #2-6. The final selection of the first round will have a recommended bonus of $1.6MM. Given the penalties for teams that surpass MLB's recommended bonuses, Stephen Strasburg's $15.1MM deal will probably remain a record for a while.
  • MLBTR has details on, analysis of and reaction to the CBA.

The Phillies were a “strong option” for Sizemore, but they wanted him in left field, Heyman reports. Left Field, that’s a bit surprising, because Charlie Manuel didn’t think Shane Victorino was an everday player a few years ago. I thought they would have bumped Victorino to one of the corners and put Sizemore in Center.

PS Rangers ??? Josh Hamilton to LF… Puh Lease Josh is fine as the starting CF’er
Left Field is the weak point with the Rangers.

We’re going to have Leonys Martin come up at some point next year to play CF probably. Until then, it’ll be Borbon or Gentry playing CF on Opening Day.

I would like the Padres to get their hands on Borbon.  He could play a very good right field, hopefully leadoff, and steal a few bases.

I’m sure the Rangers would be willing to trade him if the Padres asked. The Rangers were close to packaging him with others for Tyler Clippard early last season, but Borbon went on the DL.

I didn’t hear Boras complaining when he signed Werth to that 126 million dollar deal. Or when he got Soriano signed by the Yankees. Or when the Rangers signed Beltre to 80 million and 5 yr deal. I mean how much money does Boras need? I don’t think it’s just about that, he wants to control who goes to the playoffs and who doesn’t. Freaking pay for play is BS and that’s what Boras does best.

Boras had a hissy fit when the Phillies signed Papelbon and left Madson in the cold for the time being. After a week of sulking, now the new CBA rules seem to favor Boras. Now how did that happen?

If you don’t have to give up a draft choice to sign one of his clients, couldn’t the team offer his client more money. I dunno, I thought some official baseball people were saying.

I dont think it really affects the money a team would give a player. Im pretty sure that is only for relievers too. In the case of relievers it will create more interest in them since teams now dont have to give up a draft pick to sign them. More interest from teams may drive the price up a bit but I doubt it would be anything significant.

Ummmm…that’s the point. “the team can offer his client more money”. If you have a Type A client who teams deem unworthy of losing a 1st nd pick like F-Rod, Madson and Soriano last year (Cashman didn’t want to do it but was overruled) then it acts as a deterrent and shrinks the market. W/o the worry of losing a pick to sign a reliever then more teams will extend offers because it then boils down to just money.

How does it favor Boras or any agent? They just limited how much money a draftee can make and pretty much made it to his disadvantage when it comes to two sport athletes coming out of HS. He can no longer sign the best athletes and use the threat of them going to college on a football/basketball scholarship to get a better deal.

And what did the Paps signing have to do with the new CBA? He may have sulked but it was because he didn’t lock Madson in to an absurd deal. The CBA would not have affected that at all.

You probably thought the same thing about Chase Utley when he came up. Few prospects burst onto the scene the way Jason Heyward and Ryan Howard did, among others.

Check out the #’s Moustakas (sp?) and Freeman put up in their first halves this year.

The plate dicipline is there and his awful numbers stem from a terrible June. His numbers in May and July were good, solid average/solid on base percentage. I look for big things to come from him.

The only thing stopping him from being an every day left fielder is his defense, which is why I imagine he’s still in AAA.

i actually didn’t. i’ve been a fan of the game long enough to know people don’t come up to the majors and play like heyward and howard. but i’ve watched enough of brown in the past 3.5 seasons to come to the conclusion i think he is a bust. i don’t see him willing to change how he hits, and he has had plenty of time to get better defensively and he still takes horrible routes to any flyball in his vicinity. don’t get me wrong i would love to be proven wrong and will be the first to admit it if i am. i just don’t see it

There’s nothing wrong with the way he hits. He probably has the 3rd best approach on the team and I could see him putting up a .360-.390 obp if he got the chance to play every day for the Phillies, or at least platoon on a consistent basis.

I think he’ll be ready to contribute on an every day basis in 2013.

His mechanical issues are completely overblown, he’s not the first guy to ever hold his hands that high… If Kevin Youkilis can do what he does, there’s no reason Brown can’t.

I have a good feeling about him this year. He is very patient and has a great approach. He got shafted last year (not really) with the Pence trade. He was with a playoff calibre team and was sent to AAA in the matter of 24 hours. I’m sure it was tough, but also motivating for this coming year.

I’d love to see him and Galvis end up in the everyday lineup by next year. This would help them retain Shane, Pence, and Hamels long term.

It may take a while but evidently Brown will adapt to Major League pitching. Only way to get him to do that is to play him everyday and get him more and more experience. Not every player comes bursting into the scene with a great rookie year.

He’s 24….don’t twist your ankle jumping off the wagon.

Here are some good signs. Look beyond the .696 OPS. He had 25 walks vs 35 ko’s in 184 Ab. That indicates to me that he’s not being overmatched and he has good plate discipline. That’s probably the biggest concern with young power hitters, the fear that they’ll strike out a gazillion times because they can’t hit the offspeed stuff and are swinging for the fences.

Although it’s a small sample size, I think walk and ko rates are good examples of stats you can use towards a trend as opposed to hits, hrs, etc. He had the 2nd highest BB% among all rookies and while his K% wasn’t great at 16.7% it’s certainly not alarming.

His defense was probably the most alarming thing to me.

The Phillies probably saw him as a guy who could come in for a year, have a bounce back campaign similar to the one Beltre had with Boston, help them make the playoffs, and leave in 2013, leaving Domonic Brown with the LF job.

So with the new draft cap, what do you guys think, will there be more guys signing or more guys going to college?  With the teams being penalized for over spending, I would think a player if offered a decent bonus would have to take it because the next time he is draft eligible the team that drafts him may not want to go over their cap to give him a large bonus.  This may actually be a good thing, IMO.

Being a fan of another team means nothing. Chase Utley was a die hard Dodgers fan, they drafted him, he turned it down, went to college and came to Philadelphia. He then signed an extension to stay there. There are many examples of this around the league. Nats have the money, and I think Strass and Harper (if they live up to their expectations) will be there a long long time.
