Wilson Ramos Found Safe By Authorities

By Mark Polishuk | November 11, 2011 at 8:53pm CDT

Wilson Ramos has been rescued from his abductors, reports Rafael Rojas Cremonesi.  Venezuela's Information Minister tweeted that Ramos was found by authorities (passed on by Cremonesi), and the Ramos family has already been contacted with the good news.

Ramos was kidnapped near his home in Venezuela by four armed gunmen on Wednesday.  The kidnappers didn't contact the Ramos family but did contact police, and it was confirmed yesterday that Ramos was alive.

Thank God that this young man can continue to live his life. Here is to hoping this situation never happens again, for any person. Such a sick sad world.

This is the best story of the offseason.  None of the other stories matter.  This was a man’s life, which is worth more than all your Pujols/Fielder rumors.  Thank God they found him.  I was praying for him.

Thank goodness.  It’s a shame the Penn State fiasco had hidden the seriousness of this event (not saying the Penn State situation isn’t cuz it certainly is) because I feel a lot of people did not see how tragic something like this was because it was not talked about a lot in the midst of the media.

That doesn’t matter now, at least Ramos is back safely. Bless him.

Apparently, three people were taken into custody, and one woman who was kidnapped a few weeks ago was also freed.  This via Amanda Comak of the Washington Times.

Very good news for the Ramos family and those around baseball.  It really sucks it needed happen this way and really hurt the possibility of other baseball stars and those from Venezuela going back to their home country to play the game they love.  Wonder if he may move his family out of the country…

Joking aside, I’ve been curious whether or not MLB decides to hire security for their players outside the U.S. After Ramos it kinda seems like a necessary inevitable.

It’s more likely to be a team-by-team thing, with some hiring security and some merely recommending to their players that THEY hire security, and providing some trusted names.

Oh, and according to Nats prospect Ryan Tatsuko, the American-born players in the VWL ARE provided with security.

Without a doubt I am happy he has been returned safe. However, this is not new in Venezuela unfortunately. It is a shame that people have to resort to this sort of thing when there is a dictator in charge of a country. Not only has this hurt Mr. Ramos but it will hurt the Venezuela tourist industry and we will probably see less ex-pat Venezuelans come back home if they feel that they will be kidnapped when they get back.
Again, I am happy Wilson is home safe.

I hear the first thing he said when he got rescued was “They gave how much to Papelbon?  For a closer?!?!?”

Relax. It’s OK to joke about it now…

Freedom is something we too often take for granted. Above all, life is more important than baseball, having him rescued is the best news anyone could read on here. Now, who on earth is going to want to play winter ball in Venezuela? I bet that waiting line is short. This could be a huge knife in South American baseball in general.
