Nationals, Mark DeRosa Nearing Deal

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 21, 2011 at 9:37pm CDT

The Nationals are close to signing free agent Mark DeRosa, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). The sides are nearing a one-year, Major League contract and DeRosa will be a super utility player, Rosenthal writes. CSE represents DeRosa, who drew interest from at least four teams this offseason.

DeRosa played in just 47 games in 2011 because of a strained left wrist. The versatile 36-year-old was productive in 2009, posting a .250/.319/.433 line and appearing at five different positions for the Indians and Cardinals. However, he has struggled to stay on the field since signing a two-year deal with the Giants two Decembers ago. When he did play for the Giants, DeRosa posted a forgettable .235/.313/.279 line.

Well, if it’s for cheap. I guess he has some upside.

      Upside?  Not sure about that.

Just surprised he’s not a Dodger.

        Good call.

Old. Middle infielder. Ex-Giant. That just screams Dodgers.

If he stays healthy, yes. He could get his pop back

Until he “stands” in the batters box and his wrist blows up again!

Well he’s not a everyday player anymore so the health concerns should not be as worrisome since he’s coming off the bench, i like this signing. Much improved bench this year with mark derosa and mike Cameron. Big upgrade over last years bench in terms of power and the versatility is great as well. If he returns healthy, he could be a big surprise player.

Maybe your just mad at the direction they are headed.

Mets are the joke of the league, a NY team that cant afford their own players, Im from Brooklyn and the Mets are a laughing stock.

And you must be concerned with the Nats because every Nats article you are commenting on. I thought you were an As fan because you were telling us what they should get back in Gio trades, Im not on any Mets article because they are no threat.

Good luck DeRosa. Even with all the injuries he’s had the past couple years, he should still be a good player to have both on and off the field. When he was healthy, he was pretty solid this year, outside of a rough May (0-19 skid). He hit well out of Spring Training, and if he had stayed healthy, he could have had a bounce-back like season. When he was healthy again in September, he went 12-31, which indicates that he would be a good fit as a solid bench coach. He may not be an everyday player anymore, but as a bench player he would be a good fit for just about any team, given his veteran presence, versatility, and clubhouse leadership. I wish he could have stayed with the Giants, but it seems as if their bench is already full. Good luck in Washington, DeRosa. I’m sure you’re have a good presence on some of the Nat’s younger players.
