The latest links from around MLB on a big day for the Nationals…
- The Astros may not keep Humberto Quintero and Ivan Rodriguez is a possibility in Houston, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets. The Astros avoided arbitration with Quintero last week, signing him to a one-year deal worth $1MM.
- Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports suggests agent Scott Boras is “gunning for” an average salary of $25.5MM for Prince Fielder (Twitter link). A contract that generous would surpass Albert Pujols’ average salary of $25.4MM.
- Alex Speier of WEEI.com takes a detailed look ahead to the candidates to make Boston's 2012 rotation. Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz are the only ones who are guaranteed starting jobs for the Red Sox at this point.
- The Giants are talking to Boof Bonser about a possible minor league deal, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). Bonser is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

I don’t know who’s more nuts here.
Rosenthal for giving credibility to such an outrageous contract demand by reporting it.
Or Scott Boras for asking for that kind of money
Maybe Boras can send Fielder over to Japan for two years (Darvish’s old team). If the Rangers sign him. They could sign Fielder to a 2 year 51 million dollar deal!
That would be the only team that would be crazy enough to do it!
Topher Jay
I suppose that Fielder really doesn’t care if he plays next year or not… I can’t see anyone paying out that much for him and especially for the 10 years he’s asking for.
cyberboo
Someone forgot to send Boras the memo that the biggest spending teams in mlb aren’t interested in his client. The Cubs are now in rebuild mode, the Yankees have Texeira, the Sox have Gonzalez, the Phillies have Howard, and the list goes on.
There are league doormats that have the money, but they are the league doormats for a reason. There is no supporting cast to support a Fielder and he spins his wheels for ten years.
On the other hand, there are teams with money that are growing closer to contention, but they refuse to go over five years at 25M a season. If Boras really has the best interests of his client in mind, he abandons his insane demand of ten years, accepts the five, plus option year for the amount he wants and calls it a day. Fielder is then a free agent again at 32 – 33 and if he totally implodes, he still has a nice sum to support his retirement, because he has his cash from the contract and teams aren’t handicapped with an albatross-style contract in the future. If he performs, another big contract will be waiting from one of the big teams, since their first baseman will no longer be signed long term.

Ahh wishful thinking Boras, you tool!
bayareabeast
boof bonser? are you kiddin me..?
gmenfan 2
Minor league deal and an invite to spring training, nothing to get excited about. Sounds like they’re trying to find the 2012 Vogelsong between he and Burres.
Jose Martinez
With Bonser they are really trying to duplicate Vogelsong as he was drafted by them.
CaseyBlakeDeWitt
Burres was drafted by the Giants too actually.
gmenfan 2
That was the point that I was making.
CaseyBlakeDeWitt
Yeah, I got that. Jose didn’t, which is what I was pointing that out to him. He thought that only Bonser was drafted by the Giants.
bayareabeast
i guess it just hurts to see other teams improving and were signing people to minor league deals “hoping” to strike gold again..stories like vogy harldy ever happen, thats why it was such a big deal.
gmenfan 2
Agreed. Good article on FanGraphs about the Giants offseason and how insanely stupid it was to commit 1/3 of your baseball flexibility on Affeldt and Lopez.

if they dont get an extension for lincy and cain it will be a complete waste of an offseason..i guess the only positive would be one less year of zito.
gmenfan 2
Agreed. No extension for Cain/Lincecum plus no real free agent acquisitions = a complete joke.
slider32
I don’t see anyone giving Fielder 25 million, he looks to get the same thing as Teixiera.
davbee
Boras isn’t nuts at all. We should all be as good at our jobs as he is at his.
Fielder made $15.5 M last year and is coming off a year where he finished 3rd in the MVP voting. If Boras is willing to cut the years demand in half, I could see someone going 5 years, $125-$130 M to get what should be Fielder’s prime ages 28-32 seasons.

Gavin Floyd to the Red Sox.

Logan Morrison just tweeted that he heard Prince to Seattle was a “done deal”
optionn
He deserves more money than Pujols due to how young he is. He probably won’t get it because Albert brings an organization more hype.
DickHarden
It makes sense. He’s a better contact hitter than Pujols, a better power hitter, a better fielder, a better baserunner, and he’s in better shape. He should make more than Pujols.
gmenfan 2
*knock knock* Just making sure my sacrasm meter is working.
Jose Martinez
Whats with the Giants trying to sign old players of theirs haha Vogelsong first which worked out great and now Bonser haha. I won’t work every time.
northsfbay
Low risk, high reward. A lot better than being stuck with contracts like C Crawford, Dunn, Werth, Bay etc.
Tko11
Vogelsong representing Kutztown University!!
Ronnie Harter
Logan Morrison wrote on Twitter that Prince went to the Mariners
Tony Matias
“PRINCE” the singer played at Tacoma on the 19th and Morrison’s reference was that he is headed THROUGH Seattle to Ontario for his next concert… so yes.. Prince to “SEATTLE” (which was his original Tweet, and not to “Mariners”) is correct.
NYPOTENCE
Pudge should stop hurting his career and just call it quits.
Shawn from New Hampshire
So who are the Sox gona get for there rotation now? I am not all that comfortable with Bard in the rotation, Gio is heading to the Nats, I doubt Oswalt would come to Boston though would love to have him as our number 4, Gavin Floyd wouldnt be worth the prospects that it would take to get him. I say sign Edwin Jackson, would be more comfortable with him as our number 4 and Bard as our number 5.
Ronlacroix
Boras is just a sleeze-ball agent. I’d like to see him retire.
Shawn from New Hampshire
imagine if Boras started to become a campaign manager for a someone running for president? he would try to tell his client to ask for a 10 year term instead of a 4 year one and try to slide in a no trade to France clause in there…..die boras
dshires4
I still like how people get all uppity about Scott Boras. Pretend you work at a grocery store, and you can bag the hell out of groceries. Wouldn’t you be asking your boss for a raise when you see that all the other baggers have the items burst through the bottom of the paper bags that they…bag.
Wouldn’t you be trying to squeeze every last penny out of your store management to make your paychecks bigger?
Stop acting like Boras is doing something out of the ordinary. It’s called business. You try and get the most money while the people paying your checks try to find the happy medium where they pay you least that they can get you for.
Coollet
Who names their kid Boof?? (unless its foreign, then i appologize for the insensitive remark)
Edgar4evar
Boof Bonser is the best baseball name ever. I would sign him just to have that name on my roster.
Collateral96
He changed his name
cardswho
Scott Boras is a fool if he really believes that Fielder is worth that kind of $$.
Phillies_Aces35
No he isn’t. The fool is whoever believes him. Somebody will overpay Fielder.
Collateral96
You must be angry since Howard shreaded his achilles apart
Collateral96
He is worth that kind of money 30+ homeruns 100+ rbis and a 290-300 average every year so yeah definitely worth the money.
Edgar4evar
The market for Fielder has been really slow to develop, at least as far as the rumor mill tells it. I think he’s being held back by a lack of big money teams in need of a first baseman, and concerns over his long-term health. Teams want to wait things out and try to get the price down to what they think he’s worth.
Come the new year I think we’ll see Fielder blink. He’ll start listening to teams that want to do more like 8/175. He’ll get a ton of money, but I think 200 million might be too rich for the league this year.
55legend
who the F*** is Boof Bonser?! Sounds like a custom player cheat when you get automatic homeruns or something.
Jim McGrath
If the RS could get Jackson and Floyd for their rotation and keep Bard and Aceves in the pen–with three player acquisitions they have solidified things a bit. Floyd may cost them Reddick and Salty perhaps a prospect and Jackson would be a FA signing. Melancon was a trade for two people they had other of. Not Great offseason-but not bad.
Starters: Lester, Beckett, Jackson, Floyd, Buchholz and Doubrount.
Pen: Bard, Aceves, Melancon, Jenks,Morales, Albers, Atch and A. Miller.
